For most dark rooms, evening streets, and nighttime scenes, start with 8K30 PureVideo. Set Color Profile to Standard, Video Sharpness to Medium or Low, and Bitrate to High. Use Standard bitrate when storage matters. Move to Manual Video only when you need deliberate control of shutter speed, ISO, or white balance.

The best starting setup

Insta360’s own guidance points to one default for dim interiors and night environments: 8K30 PureVideo. PureVideo is the X5’s low-light-oriented processing mode; the camera tutorial says it improves image quality in low-light environments, while the X5 FAQ specifically recommends 8K30fps PureVideo for dim indoor scenes and nighttime environments.

Setting Recommended starting value Why
Mode PureVideo Automates low-light processing and is the simplest official recommendation.
Resolution and frame rate 8K30 Preserves the highest available 360-video detail while keeping the frame rate moderate enough for dark scenes.
Color Profile Standard Provides a ready-to-use image without requiring a log-style grading workflow.
Video Sharpness Medium or Low Reduces the harsh, noisy look that excessive sharpening can emphasize in dark footage.
Bitrate High Gives the encoder more data for difficult gradients, shadows, and fine detail.
Bitrate when storage is limited Standard Reduces file demand at the cost of some compression headroom.

These values are a starting point, not a guarantee that every scene will be bright or noise-free. The camera still needs enough light, and moving subjects impose a shutter-speed trade-off. Adjust the setup according to whether the scene is static, moving, mixed-lit, or extremely dark.

Choose the right X5 mode for the scene

PureVideo for most dark scenes

Use PureVideo first for dark indoor rooms, evening streets, restaurants, museums, and general nighttime recording. Its purpose is to improve low-light image quality without requiring you to balance shutter, ISO, and white balance manually. It is the best choice when you want to start recording quickly or when lighting changes as you move.

PureVideo is also the sensible first comparison when a room has a mixture of lamps, windows, and shadows. Record a short clip, inspect moving edges and skin tones, and then decide whether manual control solves a specific problem.

Manual Video when exposure must be predictable

Choose Manual Video when you need direct control over shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. The X5 manual lists these controls for 360 Video manual mode. Manual settings are useful for a locked-off shot, a repeated take under constant lighting, or a sequence where automatic exposure changes would be distracting.

Manual mode does not automatically make a dark image cleaner. It gives you the ability to prevent the camera from selecting an unsuitable shutter or from changing brightness during a take. You must still balance motion, brightness, and noise.

Low Light Enhancement for supported 5.7K30 recording

Low Light Enhancement is intended for clearer, more stable footage at up to 5.7K30. Use it when that resolution and frame-rate limit fits the project and you want the camera’s supported low-light assistance rather than 8K capture.

In bright environments, Insta360 says Low Light Enhancement can be turned off to improve battery life. It is therefore not a setting to leave enabled indiscriminately when you are back in daylight.

Timelapse for very static scenes

For a night timelapse or a scene where continuous real-time motion is unnecessary, use the X5’s timelapse workflow. The manual documents separate timelapse controls, including shutter and ISO in Manual Timelapse mode. A timelapse can accommodate a longer exposure strategy more naturally than a walking shot, because the subject and camera are expected to remain consistent between frames.

Step-by-step setup on the camera

  1. Open the shooting mode controls. Select PureVideo for the first test. If you need manual exposure, select 360 Video and then its Manual option; for a timelapse, select the timelapse mode and use Manual Timelapse where appropriate.
  2. Set resolution and frame rate. Choose 8K at 30 frames per second for the official low-light starting point. The X5 supports 8K 7680×3840 at 30, 25, or 24 fps, and PureVideo is available at those 8K frame rates.
  3. Set Color Profile to Standard. This is Insta360’s recommended profile for the 8K30 PureVideo setup.
  4. Set Video Sharpness to Medium or Low. Choose Low when dark areas look brittle or grain is being accentuated; choose Medium when you need a little more perceived detail.
  5. Set Bitrate to High. Use Standard instead if your card capacity, transfer workflow, or editing storage is the limiting factor.
  6. Frame a short test. Record the actual scene for several seconds, including the fastest movement and the darkest area that matters. Review faces, walking edges, fine textures, and bright lamps rather than judging only the camera preview.
  7. Change one variable at a time. If the image is too dark, address exposure or available light before increasing sharpness. If motion is smeared, address shutter speed or camera movement before changing color settings.

How shutter speed, ISO, and white balance affect night footage

Shutter speed: brightness versus motion clarity

Shutter speed determines how long light reaches the sensor. A faster shutter generally makes moving subjects clearer but admits less light. A slower shutter admits more light but records movement across a longer interval, which can produce blur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The X5 specification lists a video shutter range from 1/8000 second to the limit of the selected frame rate. That lower limit is not a promise that every scene will look sharp at the slowest available value. For a static camera and static room, a longer exposure can be useful. For walking, panning, dancing, or passing vehicles, an excessively slow shutter can turn movement into streaks.

When using Manual Video, begin with the slowest shutter that still keeps the important movement acceptable. If motion is smeared, make the shutter faster and compensate only as necessary with more light or ISO. If the camera is fixed and nothing important moves, a slower shutter may recover brightness without immediately pushing ISO higher.

ISO: sensitivity with a noise cost

ISO controls sensitivity. Raising it brightens the recording, but higher ISO commonly increases visible noise. The X5’s stated video ISO range is 100–6400.

Use the lowest ISO that produces a usable exposure after choosing a shutter appropriate for the movement. Do not raise ISO simply because a preview looks dark if you can safely stabilize the camera, add light, or accept a slower shutter in a static shot. Conversely, a slightly noisier frame is usually preferable to severe motion blur when a person is walking or speaking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

White balance: remove unwanted color casts

White balance corrects the color cast created by the light source. Higher white-balance values produce a warmer result; lower values produce a cooler result. The X5’s stated white-balance range is 2000K–10000K.

Automatic white balance is convenient when you move between rooms or between streetlights. Manual white balance is preferable when the lighting is constant and matching multiple takes matters. Set it while looking at a neutral surface in the actual light, then check skin tones and white objects in a short recording.

Settings for common low-light situations

Static or mostly static room

  • Mode: 8K30 PureVideo.
  • Color Profile: Standard.
  • Video Sharpness: Medium or Low.
  • Bitrate: High, unless storage requires Standard.
  • Support: tripod or another stable surface.

A stable camera lets the exposure remain longer without adding as much camera-motion blur. This stability recommendation follows from the documented relationship between shutter duration and light; it is practical operating advice, not a quoted laboratory test. If the room is still but people are moving, judge the people’s motion separately from camera stability.

Walking indoors or outdoors at night

Start with PureVideo and prioritize a stable hold, smooth movement, and an acceptable shutter. If you switch to Manual Video, avoid selecting a shutter so slow that each step smears the scene. Raise ISO only enough to maintain usable brightness after you have chosen a shutter that preserves the movement you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a support, monopod, or two-handed grip where practical. A stable camera cannot stop a moving person from blurring, but it can prevent your own movement from adding another source of blur.

Bright windows with a dark room

A room with bright windows creates a wide brightness range that can fool an automatic exposure. Compare PureVideo with standard Video and use EV or Balanced Exposure where the selected mode provides those controls. The X5 manual documents EV and Balanced Exposure as mode-dependent controls, so their availability depends on the shooting mode rather than appearing in every setup.

Decide what must retain detail: the people inside, the window view, or a compromise between them. A single exposure cannot preserve all detail in an extremely high-contrast scene. Reframe, close a blind, add interior light, or accept that one side of the image will clip.

Night timelapse or an almost motionless view

Use timelapse when the scene does not need continuous real-time motion. In Manual Timelapse, set shutter and ISO deliberately, keep the camera fixed, and test the interval and exposure before leaving the camera running. A fixed composition makes it easier to use a longer exposure and keep brightness consistent from frame to frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jitter Blur Reduction and stabilization choices

Jitter Blur Reduction can improve motion blur and stabilization in low-light environments. Insta360 cautions that in extreme environments the image may become darker and may flicker when this feature is used.

Test it in the actual lighting rather than assuming it is always beneficial. If footage becomes visibly darker or flickers under difficult artificial lighting, turn it off and compare a stable-camera clip. For a tripod shot, stabilization assistance may be less important than preserving exposure and avoiding processing artifacts.

Resolution, frame rate, and storage decisions

Choice Use it when Trade-off
8K30 PureVideo You want the official low-light recommendation and maximum 360 detail. Creates larger files and still requires careful control of movement in darkness.
8K25 or 8K24 Your project uses those frame rates or you prefer a lower frame rate for a specific delivery workflow. Motion cadence changes; the low-light recommendation is specifically stated as 8K30, although PureVideo supports 25 and 24 fps as well.
Low Light Enhancement up to 5.7K30 You value the supported clearer, more stable low-light mode over 8K resolution. Lower maximum resolution than 8K and mode-dependent availability.
High bitrate You want more compression headroom in shadows and fine detail. Higher storage and transfer demand.
Standard bitrate File size is the limiting factor. Less bitrate available to preserve difficult detail.

The X5 records to microSD storage. Use a compatible, sufficiently capacious card for the selected resolution, bitrate, and recording duration, and leave working space for multiple takes. The available specifications identify microSD storage but do not establish a universal recording time for every card, scene, or firmware version, so calculate capacity from your own settings and card rather than relying on a single runtime figure.

How to reduce grain without creating blur

  1. Start with the official mode. Use 8K30 PureVideo before making complex manual changes.
  2. Keep sharpness Medium or Low. Excessive sharpening can make noise and compression texture more conspicuous.
  3. Stabilize the camera for static scenes. This gives you more freedom to use a longer exposure without adding camera shake.
  4. Protect motion with shutter speed. For walking or moving subjects, do not solve every brightness problem by slowing the shutter.
  5. Raise ISO sparingly. The X5 permits ISO up to 6400, but the top of a range is not a quality target.
  6. Add or reposition light when possible. A small increase in usable light can be more effective than aggressive ISO or sharpening adjustments.
  7. Check the recorded file. Preview screens can hide noise, flicker, and motion smear that become obvious on a larger display.

Common problems and fixes

The video is bright but smeared

The shutter is probably too slow for the movement. In Manual Video, use a faster shutter, then increase light or ISO only as needed. If the scene is a walking shot, accept a little more noise rather than allowing every step to blur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The video is sharp but very noisy

ISO may be too high, or the scene may be underexposed. Lower ISO if the lighting and shutter allow it, set Video Sharpness to Low or Medium, stabilize the camera for static footage, and add light where possible. Do not expect a sharpness change alone to remove sensor noise.

The image looks too dark after enabling Jitter Blur Reduction

Insta360 warns that extreme environments can become darker or flicker with this feature. Record a comparison with Jitter Blur Reduction disabled. Keep the option that gives the better balance of motion rendering, brightness, and flicker for that specific light source.

Colors change during a take

Automatic white balance can react to mixed or changing light. If the lighting is stable, switch to Manual Video and set a fixed white balance within the 2000K–10000K range. If you are moving between different light sources, automatic white balance may be less disruptive than a fixed value that becomes wrong after the move.

The window is white while the room is dark

Use EV or Balanced Exposure where available, test PureVideo against standard Video, and decide which part of the scene has priority. Reduce the brightness difference physically by changing the camera angle, covering the window partially, or adding interior light.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Files fill the card too quickly

Change Bitrate from High to Standard, shorten takes, or use a lower-resolution mode that still meets the delivery requirement. The trade-off is reduced data available for shadows and fine detail. Keep a compatible microSD card with enough free capacity for the selected mode and bitrate.

A practical decision guide

Your priority Recommended path
Fast setup in a dark room 8K30 PureVideo, Standard color, Medium or Low sharpness, High bitrate.
Highest detail for a mostly static scene 8K30 PureVideo on a tripod; consider Manual Video if exposure must remain fixed.
Predictable exposure across repeated takes Manual Video with controlled shutter, ISO, and white balance.
Walking at night PureVideo first; keep the shutter fast enough for steps and raise ISO only as needed.
Clearer, more stable footage where 5.7K30 is sufficient Low Light Enhancement, with the feature disabled in bright scenes if battery life is a priority.
Night timelapse Timelapse, preferably Manual Timelapse when you need deliberate shutter and ISO control.
Limited storage Keep the selected resolution if required, but switch High bitrate to Standard and monitor card capacity.

What the X5 specifications establish

The current X5 specifications list 8K video at 7680×3840 and frame rates of 30, 25, and 24 fps. They state an ISO range of 100–6400, a white-balance range of 2000K–10000K, and a video shutter range from 1/8000 second to the limit of the selected frame rate. The camera uses microSD storage and is marketed with replaceable lenses.

Those figures define the camera’s available controls; they do not constitute an independent low-light performance test. No independent test statistic or dated comparative study establishes a universal noise, dynamic-range, or minimum-illumination result for every X5 unit and firmware version. Treat the settings above as a documented starting workflow and verify the final look with a short recording in your actual location.

Bottom line

Use 8K30 PureVideo with Standard color, Medium or Low sharpness, and High bitrate as the default for low-light, indoor, and night recording. Switch to Manual Video when shutter, ISO, and white balance must stay under your control; use Low Light Enhancement when 5.7K30 is acceptable and clearer, more stable low-light footage is the priority. Keep the camera stable for static scenes, protect shutter speed when people move, and raise ISO only as far as the scene requires.
