The best ink refill printer depends on your workload, not a universal ranking. Refillable ink-tank printers replace disposable cartridges with reservoirs filled from bottles, so the right choice starts with your monthly volume and the functions you actually need.
For occasional documents, a print-only tank can be enough. Home offices often need print, scan and copy; multi-page administration may justify an automatic document feeder (ADF), fax and automatic duplexing. Compare the exact model number, bottle system, regional availability and published yield assumptions before buying.
What an ink refill printer is
An ink refill printer is an ink-tank printer with built-in reservoirs that you replenish from bottles. Epson calls its system EcoTank and uses keyed EcoFit bottles on the listed US models. HP calls its system Smart Tank and directs owners to Original HP ink bottles. Canon uses the MegaTank name on the models described in its US product guide.

The tank is part of the printer rather than a removable cartridge. You monitor the reservoir windows or level indicators, then add the bottle specified for that exact printer and country. Bottle shape, keying, ink formulation and product number can differ within one brand family, so a bottle advertised for a “tank printer” is not automatically compatible.

Tank printers are aimed at people who print often enough for bottle refills and large supplied-ink capacities to matter. HP describes a tank printer as using a refillable reservoir instead of cartridges and calls it suitable for high-volume printing; that is HP’s product description, not an independent performance finding.
Which printer is the best fit for your work?
Use the following conditional picks as a starting point rather than a winner’s podium. The manufacturer pages reviewed provide specifications and feature descriptions, not a matched, independent cross-brand test.
For print-only documents
Epson’s US EcoTank range identifies the ET-1910 as a print-only model. It is the clearest fit when you already have a scanner or never scan and copy. The rest of the current Epson models listed on that page include a built-in color scanner, but other features vary by model.

For a general home-office all-in-one
Look among the Epson ET-2900, ET-2980, ET-3930, ET-3950 and ET-4950, or within HP’s Smart Tank 5000/5100, 6000 and 7600 series. These families cover print/scan/copy workflows, but the exact SKU determines whether duplexing is manual or automatic, whether an ADF or fax is included, the wireless options, paper capacity and rated speed. Treat the family name as a shortlist, not a specification.
For multi-page office jobs
The Canon PIXMA G7020 description in Canon’s 2022 US Product Guide includes an ADF, fax, automatic two-sided printing and a 350-sheet plain-paper capacity. Those features address unattended copying, scanning or faxing better than a basic all-in-one. The guide is dated, so confirm that the G7020 is still sold in your market and check any replacement model’s specification.

For photo-oriented printing
Canon’s same 2022 guide describes the PIXMA G620 as a six-color MegaTank designed around photos. Epson says its EcoTank printers can print high-quality photos and discusses photographic or fine-art paper. Photo capability does not require specialty paper for ordinary documents; choose photo media only when your images need its coating, weight or finish.

This table records functions specifically described in the manufacturer information. It does not rank print quality, reliability or cost, and it does not convert advertised yields into a common test result.

How to choose an ink refill printer step by step
- Estimate your real workload. Count pages printed in a typical month and separate routine text from color-heavy documents and photos. A tank’s published yield is an estimate, so your page mix matters more than a headline number.
- Decide whether you need an all-in-one. Choose print-only when scanning and copying are genuinely unnecessary. Otherwise require print/scan/copy, then add fax or an ADF only if your workflow uses them.
- Specify duplexing. “Duplex” can mean manual: the printer pauses so you turn the pages. Automatic duplexing turns sheets itself and is materially more convenient for regular two-sided reports. HP’s comparison distinguishes these modes; verify the exact model.
- Check multi-page handling. An ADF feeds a stack of originals for scanning, copying or faxing. Without one, each page must be placed on the glass individually. The Canon G7020 description explicitly includes an ADF; do not infer one from the presence of a scanner on another model.
- Match connectivity to your devices. Confirm Wi-Fi or other wireless support, mobile-print compatibility and the connection type for every computer, phone and tablet you will use. Epson describes wireless and mobile printing across its EcoTank range, while HP lists connectivity by model.
- Check speed and paper capacity. Use the manufacturer’s rated speed for your expected queue and make sure the input tray holds enough sheets for your routine. The G7020 description specifies 350 sheets; capacities on the other families are model-dependent.
- Decide how important photos are. A six-color design such as the G620’s is explicitly photo-oriented. For mostly text and forms, prioritize duplexing, ADF operation, wireless setup and paper handling instead.
- Confirm space and budget. Measure the printer with trays extended, not just its closed footprint. Purchase prices were not established in the available product information, so compare current local listings separately from ink costs.
- Verify the exact consumables. Record the full model number, country and replacement-bottle product number before ordering. This prevents a family-level compatibility mistake.
Ink cost, page yield and the limits of advertised numbers
Tank ownership is often discussed as if a single page-yield number proves savings. It does not. Published yields are estimates made under a specified method, and actual output changes with printed content, color coverage, quality settings, environmental conditions, maintenance and how frequently the printer is used.
Epson’s US page reports more than 100 million EcoTank printers sold worldwide through October 2024. That is Epson’s cumulative internal sales figure for 2010–2024, not an independent market-share measurement.
Epson also says included ink can print up to 5,000 pages and may last up to three years for most users under stated average monthly volumes. The company notes that some ink is consumed during initial setup and that actual yield varies substantially. “Up to” is therefore a ceiling under Epson’s assumptions, not a guarantee for every model or household.

HP describes some Smart Tank models as including up to three years of ink, with the page-yield threshold based on assumed monthly use. HP’s estimate uses its own models and assumptions; it should not be equated directly with Epson’s figure.

- Write down the price of the correct replacement bottle set in your country.
- Use the manufacturer’s stated yield for your exact model and ink set, keeping its test conditions with the number.
- Divide bottle-set price by that stated yield to obtain an indicative ink cost per page.
- Adjust your expectation downward if you print dense graphics, frequent photos, high-quality modes or many maintenance pages.
- Add paper and any optional photo media; do not treat the printer’s included starter ink as a recurring purchase.
No independent, cross-brand total-cost comparison was established for the Epson, HP and Canon examples here, so a precise “cheapest” verdict would overstate the evidence.
Ink compatibility and safe refilling
Use the bottle family specified for the exact model
Epson describes keyed EcoFit bottles, which are designed to guide the correct color to the matching tank. HP directs Smart Tank owners to Original HP ink bottles, and its support documentation lists product numbers for specified Smart Tank models. Canon’s bottle requirement must likewise be checked against the individual MegaTank model and region.
Do not mix colors, pour ink from an unverified bottle or rely on a label that names only a broad printer family. Keep the old bottle or its product number until the replacement has been matched to the printer’s manual or support page.
A practical refill checklist
- Read the model number on the printer itself, not only the box or a retailer category page.
- Open the manufacturer’s support or manual page for that model and country.
- Match each color and bottle product number; check that the bottle seal and cap are intact.
- Refill on a level, protected surface and stop at the tank’s indicated fill line. Avoid forcing ink into a full reservoir.
- Close the tank covers securely, wipe any drips with the procedure specified by the manufacturer and run only the maintenance cycle the manual recommends.
- Print a nozzle or alignment check if the printer requests one, then return unused bottles to their stated storage conditions.
The exact opening, fill and cleaning sequence differs by model. Follow the printer’s instructions rather than treating this checklist as a substitute for the manual.

Wireless, mobile and paper considerations
Wireless printing is useful only when the printer supports the network band, app or operating system used by your devices. Epson’s EcoTank information highlights wireless and mobile printing, and HP lists connectivity differences within its Smart Tank comparison. Before buying, confirm support for your phone and computer platforms and whether the printer can reconnect after a router change.
Paper capacity affects how often you interrupt a job. A larger tray is valuable for reports and forms, while a photo-focused workflow may use a separate specialty-paper path or require more frequent media changes. The 350-sheet plain-paper figure documented for the G7020 is a concrete example; do not transfer it to another Canon or tank model.
For photos, select paper designed for the ink and printer. Epson discusses photographic and fine-art paper for EcoTank photo work, but ordinary copy paper remains appropriate for text, invoices and drafts. Specialty media is an option tied to the task, not a requirement of tank printing.

Choosing by family name alone
A single family can contain print-only, basic all-in-one and office-oriented models. The ET-1910, for example, is print-only while other listed Epson models include a color scanner. Read the exact SKU’s feature list before paying.
Assuming every duplex feature is automatic
Manual and automatic duplexing produce different workflows. Look for the word “automatic” in the exact specification when unattended two-sided printing matters.

Assuming a scanner includes an ADF
A flatbed scanner handles one page at a time. An ADF is a separate feature; the G7020 description names one explicitly. Confirm ADF capacity and supported scan/copy modes for any other model.
Treating yield as a guarantee
Setup ink, page coverage, maintenance, settings and environment all change real output. Keep the manufacturer’s conditions attached to every yield estimate.
Buying the wrong bottle
Keyed bottles and model-specific product numbers exist to prevent mismatches. Verify country, model and color before opening a bottle.

The Canon descriptions cited here come from a 2022 guide. A retailer may list remaining stock, a regional variant or a replacement with different features. Confirm current support, supplies and warranty terms before choosing it.
Expecting an independent “best” result from vendor pages
Manufacturer specifications can establish what a printer is designed to do, but they do not establish comparative noise, reliability, print-quality ranking or real-world savings. Treat those claims separately from independent testing when such testing is available.
A decision worksheet
Answer these questions before comparing prices:
- How many pages do you print in a normal month, and how much is color?
- Do you need only printing, or print/scan/copy as well?
- Will you scan or copy multi-page stacks often enough to require an ADF?
- Do you need fax, automatic duplexing or a large paper tray?
- Which wireless and mobile devices must connect?
- Are photos occasional, frequent or the main purpose?
- Which exact bottle family and product numbers are sold in your country?
- How much room is available with input and output trays open?
Use the answers to narrow the model list, then verify the manufacturer specification for the exact SKU. This process is more reliable than selecting a printer from a broad “best” label.
Bottom line
Choose a refillable ink-tank printer by workflow: the Epson ET-1910 is the documented print-only example; Epson’s other listed ET models add color scanning with model-dependent office features; HP’s Smart Tank families require SKU-level checks for duplex, speed, connectivity and fax; and Canon’s G7020 and G620 illustrate office-ADF and photo-focused designs, respectively. Because the available evidence is manufacturer information rather than a controlled cross-brand test—and Canon’s examples are from 2022—verify current regional listings, exact features and bottle compatibility before buying.
