Best overall for a mixed local/cloud setup: the eufy Indoor Cam E220 combines 2K pan-and-tilt video, on-device detection, a documented privacy mode, local microSD recording, optional cloud backup, and NAS recording through RTSP. Choose the Reolink E1 if an NVR-centered, local-storage design is your priority. Choose the Aqara Camera E1 if Apple HomeKit Secure Video, end-to-end encryption, and local recognition matter most.
No indoor camera is automatically private. The meaningful questions are where footage is stored, what encryption actually covers, whether recording can be stopped visibly, how much cloud access is optional, and which smart-home ecosystem you are willing to use. The three models below are compared on those documented capabilities rather than on an unverified image-quality or reliability test.
At-a-glance comparison

Specifications and privacy functions can change with firmware, app revisions, regional availability, or account terms. Confirm the current manual and settings screens for your region before purchase, especially if a feature is essential to your threat model.
What privacy means for an indoor camera
Indoor cameras watch the rooms where conversations, routines, children, guests, and work documents are present. A privacy-conscious choice is therefore less about a single megapixel number and more about limiting unnecessary copies of that footage and making recording status obvious.
#1 Best Overall
- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Storage location is the first decision
Local microSD recording keeps the primary continuous video on a card inside the camera. NAS or NVR recording sends it to storage you control in your home. These arrangements can reduce the amount of footage that must leave the building, but they do not automatically make remote viewing private: an app may still require an account, an internet connection, or a relay service when you are away.
Cloud backup can be useful for theft, fire, or camera damage because an intruder cannot simply remove the local card. It also creates another location, account, and policy to secure. Treat cloud as an intentional option, not as the default definition of a security camera.
Encryption labels are not interchangeable
End-to-end encryption means the video is encrypted so that only authorized endpoints hold the keys needed to decrypt it. Encryption in transit protects a connection while data moves between devices and a service. Encryption at rest protects stored data on a server or device. A product can provide one without providing the others.
For the E220, eufy says its Advanced Encryption option uses end-to-end encryption so only authorized devices can decrypt videos. It separately states that cloud transfers to Amazon Web Services are encrypted in transit. Those are useful protections, but they describe a particular option and transfer path; enable the setting and verify which recording modes it covers.
The Reolink E1 documentation publishes an AES-128 encryption claim. That identifies an encryption algorithm, not necessarily end-to-end protection for every live view, cloud feature, or remote-access path. Ask what is encrypted, where keys are held, and whether the claim applies to local recordings, network traffic, or both.

Aqara documents end-to-end encryption for Apple HomeKit Secure Video and local recognition. In that workflow, compatible HomeKit processing can analyze events without sending the recognition task to a vendor’s general-purpose cloud. Other Aqara storage choices, such as encrypted cloud storage, have their own account and policy considerations.
Privacy controls should be visible
A software toggle can stop recording, but people in the room may not know whether it is active. A lens shutter, a camera-off position, or an audible indicator gives guests and household members a meaningful signal. The three cameras document privacy controls, but their physical implementations differ. Test the control from the same app and account that family members will use, then verify what the camera does to live view, recording, and notifications.
The ecosystem determines your practical privacy
Smart-home compatibility changes where settings live and which account controls access. The E220 lists support for Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. The Aqara E1 is the clearest Apple HomeKit Secure Video choice in this group because its documentation explicitly describes end-to-end encryption and local recognition. The cited Reolink E1 material emphasizes the manufacturer’s app and NVR workflow, so plan around that arrangement rather than assuming another platform is supported.
eufy Indoor Cam E220: the flexible local-storage pick
What it records and how it sees a room
The E220 records 2K video at 2304 × 1296 pixels. Its pan-and-tilt mechanism can cover more of a room than a fixed lens, while infrared night vision handles dark scenes. On-device AI detection is important for privacy because event analysis can occur at the camera instead of requiring every frame to be uploaded for classification.
Three recording routes
You can use a local microSD card, add optional cloud backup, or send streams to a NAS through RTSP. This combination lets you choose between a self-contained camera, an off-site copy for resilience, and storage you administer yourself. RTSP-based NAS recording usually requires more networking knowledge than inserting a card: secure the NAS account, restrict who can reach the stream, and avoid exposing the camera or RTSP port directly to the public internet.

Privacy mode and encryption choices
The E220 includes a documented privacy mode. Use it when people are home or when a room should be excluded from monitoring, and confirm whether scheduled recordings, event detection, and third-party integrations also stop. eufy’s Advanced Encryption option is described as end-to-end encryption for video, while transfers to its cloud service are described as encrypted in transit. Read the current app wording before assuming that every local, live, and cloud path receives identical protection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Who should choose it
Choose the E220 when you want one indoor pan-and-tilt camera that can start with a microSD card, grow into NAS recording, and retain cloud backup as an option. It is also the most broadly documented choice here for households that divide devices among HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Assistant. It is less suitable if your policy forbids any vendor cloud account or if you require a hardware shutter rather than a software privacy mode.
Reolink E1: the NVR-oriented option
Resolution and night coverage
The E1 records 4MP video at 2560 × 1440 pixels. Reolink documents eight infrared LEDs and night vision up to 40 feet. The stated distance is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for every room: wall color, reflections, furniture, and scene lighting can shorten useful range.
Why an NVR changes the privacy model
NVR connectivity supports extended local storage under your control. A dedicated recorder can centralize retention, permit larger drives than a camera card, and continue recording even if someone removes the camera. It also becomes a high-value device: protect its administrator account, place it on a trusted network, update it, and decide how remote access is allowed. Local recording does not remove the need to secure the recorder or the camera’s network credentials.
Encryption and privacy mode
The product documentation states AES-128 encryption and includes a privacy mode. AES-128 is a strong, standardized cipher when implemented correctly, but the label alone does not tell you whether video is end-to-end encrypted, encrypted only in transit, or protected at rest on the NVR. Review the current security documentation for each enabled access path. Test privacy mode to learn whether it stops the lens, recording, notifications, or only app viewing.

Who should choose it
Select the E1 if you already operate, or intend to build, an NVR-based camera system and want the camera’s primary retention outside a vendor cloud. It is a practical fit for a technically managed home. It is not the clearest choice for someone seeking HomeKit Secure Video, because the cited documentation centers on the manufacturer’s app and NVR workflow rather than that Apple service.
Aqara Camera E1: the strongest documented Apple privacy path
HomeKit Secure Video and local recognition
Aqara documents full support for Apple HomeKit Secure Video, including end-to-end encryption and local recognition. For an Apple household with a compatible Home hub and plan, this is the most explicit privacy architecture in the shortlist: HomeKit can handle supported analysis locally and protect recordings with Apple’s end-to-end design. Check Apple’s current HomeKit Secure Video requirements separately, because the hub, account, storage plan, and supported regions are outside the camera itself.
Local, NAS, and cloud choices
The E1 accepts microSD cards up to 512GB, supports SMB3-compatible NAS backup, and offers encrypted cloud storage. A card is simple and inexpensive but physically vulnerable; NAS backup gives you control and capacity; cloud storage provides an off-site copy. Decide whether you need continuous recording, event clips, or both, then set retention so old footage is deleted rather than accumulating indefinitely.
Modern wireless security
Wi-Fi 6 support can improve efficiency on a compatible network, while WPA3 provides a newer wireless authentication option. Neither feature encrypts footage end to end by itself. Use a strong Wi-Fi passphrase, update the access point, and avoid placing the camera on an open guest network that cannot reach the storage destination it needs.

An audible privacy signal
When Privacy Mode is activated, the camera can play a “Camera Off” sound. That audible confirmation is useful in homes where people cannot see the lens or app screen. Tell household members what the sound means, and verify that the camera actually stops the recording behaviors you intend to stop.

How to choose among the three
Choose by storage requirement
| Your priority | Most aligned option | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One camera with local card, optional cloud, and RTSP NAS flexibility | eufy Indoor Cam E220 | Its documented storage routes cover all three approaches. |
| Centralized recording on a home NVR | Reolink E1 | NVR connectivity is a central documented feature. |
| Apple-managed encrypted recording and recognition | Aqara Camera E1 | HomeKit Secure Video end-to-end encryption and local recognition are explicitly documented. |
| Large removable local capacity | Aqara Camera E1 | Its documented microSD limit is up to 512GB. |
Choose by privacy control
- Pick the E220 if a documented in-app privacy mode is sufficient and you also want on-device detection.
- Pick the Reolink E1 if privacy mode must fit into an NVR-managed installation.
- Pick the Aqara E1 if an audible “Camera Off” confirmation is valuable to your household.
Choose by remote-access tolerance
If your policy is “no footage leaves the home,” start with local microSD, NAS, or NVR recording, disable cloud backup, and verify that remote viewing is disabled or operates only through a path you explicitly approve. If you need alerts while traveling, you must evaluate the account, relay, and internet connections that make those alerts possible. There is no universal setting that provides both unrestricted remote access and zero external communication.
Privacy-first installation: a practical sequence
- Define rooms and exclusions. Do not place an indoor camera in bedrooms, bathrooms, or any area where recording is unnecessary. Aim at entrances, equipment, or shared spaces rather than private conversations.
- Update before configuring. Install the latest camera firmware and mobile app available for your region. Security fixes and privacy controls can depend on firmware.
- Create a unique account password. Use a long password that is not reused elsewhere. Enable multi-factor authentication if the service offers it, and remove old household accounts.
- Secure the Wi-Fi. Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a strong passphrase, change the router’s administrator password, and disable remote administration unless you have a specific need.
- Place cameras on a restricted network. A separate IoT VLAN or network can limit access to personal computers. Permit only the traffic needed for the camera, NAS, NVR, and approved smart-home controller; do not expose camera ports to the internet.
- Select the storage path. Insert a high-endurance microSD card where supported, add the camera to the intended NAS or NVR, or enable a cloud plan only after reading its current retention and access terms.
- Set retention deliberately. Use the shortest period that meets your safety need. Configure automatic deletion and document who can export clips.
- Configure privacy mode. Set a schedule if the app supports one, and test it manually. Confirm the lens position or status, recording indicator, event detection, notifications, and smart-home automations.
- Test remote access. From outside your home network, verify whether live view and playback work, which account is required, and whether the camera contacts a relay or cloud service. Turn off remote access if you do not need it.
- Test recovery. Unplug the internet connection while leaving local storage available. Check whether local recording continues, then restore connectivity and confirm that the camera does not silently change your chosen privacy mode.
Common failure modes and fixes
“Local storage” still generates unexpected cloud traffic
Local recording may coexist with account sign-in, push notifications, time synchronization, firmware checks, or remote viewing. Review cloud backup and remote-access switches, inspect the camera’s network connections at the router, and block unnecessary outbound traffic only after confirming that blocking it will not disable updates or local recording.
NAS or NVR recording stops
- Confirm the camera and storage device are on networks that can reach each other.
- Check the NAS/NVR account, share permissions, available capacity, and clock settings.
- For RTSP, verify the stream address and that the recorder supports the selected codec and resolution.
- Look for storage wear or a full disk; configure alerts before the next failure.
Privacy mode appears enabled but clips continue
Some products distinguish live view, continuous recording, event detection, and third-party integrations. Trigger a controlled test, then inspect each destination: the microSD card, NAS/NVR, cloud timeline, and notification history. If any path continues recording, change that path’s setting or physically reposition the camera during private periods.
Night footage is washed out or too dark
Infrared light reflects from nearby walls, glass, and glossy surfaces. Move the camera away from the wall, remove objects close to the lens, and test with room lights off. The E1’s documented 40-foot night-vision figure is a maximum specification under suitable conditions, not a guaranteed indoor result.
Too many alerts expose private activity
Start with the least sensitive detection setting that still covers your safety goal. Use activity zones where available, exclude windows and high-traffic areas, and choose event-only recording if continuous footage is unnecessary. On the E220, on-device AI detection can reduce the need to upload every frame for analysis, but review exactly which events are sent as notifications or cloud clips.
Ongoing privacy maintenance
- Review firmware and app updates monthly and read whether permissions or cloud terms changed.
- Audit signed-in devices and revoke accounts belonging to former residents, guests, or old phones.
- Rotate Wi-Fi, camera, NAS, and NVR credentials after a suspected compromise.
- Check storage retention and delete exports that no longer have a purpose.
- Test privacy mode and any audible or visual indicator whenever the camera is moved or its firmware changes.
- Back up important evidence to an encrypted destination, then remove ordinary copies from phones and shared drives.
- Revisit camera placement when a room’s use changes; a camera appropriate for a playroom may not be appropriate for a home office later.
Final decision
For the broadest combination of local recording, optional cloud backup, RTSP NAS support, pan-and-tilt coverage, and multi-platform compatibility, start with the eufy Indoor Cam E220. Build around the Reolink E1 when an NVR is the center of your privacy plan and you are comfortable managing that infrastructure. Choose the Aqara Camera E1 for an Apple-centered home where HomeKit Secure Video’s documented end-to-end encryption, local recognition, Wi-Fi 6/WPA3 support, and audible privacy confirmation outweigh the need for a simpler standalone setup.
Whichever model you install, privacy is a configuration you maintain: minimize cloud use, secure every account and storage endpoint, keep firmware current, and verify that the camera visibly or audibly stops when your household expects it to.
