There is no single best replacement for iCloud+. Choose Proton Drive if end-to-end encryption is your main requirement; keep iCloud+ with Advanced Data Protection if Apple Photos, device backup and system integration matter most; choose OneDrive or Google One when your household already uses those ecosystems; and choose Dropbox Plus for straightforward cross-device file sync and restoration. Compare the encryption keys, recovery model, Apple-specific features, sharing, user limits and local price before moving anything.
Start with the privacy question: encryption is not one thing
Every major cloud service encrypts data while it travels to the provider and while it is stored. That protects against interception and some forms of unauthorized access, but it does not necessarily prevent the provider from technically accessing your files. The decisive question is who holds the decryption keys.
- Provider-managed encryption: the service holds or can access the keys. A legal request, an internal administrator or a compromised provider system could potentially expose readable content.
- End-to-end encryption (E2EE): encryption happens before upload and only your devices (or explicitly authorized recipients) hold the keys. The provider should not be able to decrypt the protected content, although metadata, account details and anything you deliberately share can remain exposed.
- Zero-access wording: usually means the provider says it cannot read encrypted file contents. Check which features and data types are covered, rather than treating the label as a guarantee for an entire account.
Sharing also changes the equation. A file link, collaborative document or preview may require the service to process content or to give a recipient a decryption capability. Strong privacy therefore has to be weighed against collaboration and recovery, not judged by a single badge.
How iCloud+ compares when Advanced Data Protection is enabled
iCloud+ has two materially different security profiles. Apple’s standard protection encrypts iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes and iCloud Backup in transit and on Apple’s servers, but Apple holds the keys for those categories. Mail, Contacts and Calendars use the same server-side model even when stronger protection is enabled.

Advanced Data Protection (ADP) changes iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes and backup to end-to-end encryption. Keys are held by your trusted devices instead of Apple. That makes iCloud+ a more credible privacy choice than a simple “Apple can read everything” description suggests, but it introduces a serious recovery obligation.
What ADP protects and what it does not
| iCloud data category | Standard Data Protection | Advanced Data Protection | Who controls protected keys |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Drive | Encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers | End-to-end encrypted | Trusted devices |
| Photos | Encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers | End-to-end encrypted | Trusted devices |
| Notes | Encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers | End-to-end encrypted | Trusted devices |
| iCloud Backup | Encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers | End-to-end encrypted | Trusted devices |
| Mail, Contacts and Calendars | Encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers | Remain in the server-encrypted category | Apple holds the server-side keys |
ADP is therefore not an all-or-nothing privacy switch. It covers the categories most people think of as personal files and device data, while leaving Mail, Contacts and Calendars outside end-to-end protection.
The recovery trade-off
Apple says it cannot recover ADP-protected keys for you. Before turning ADP on, set up at least one recovery method: a recovery contact or a recovery key, and keep your device passcode or account password available. If you lose access to your trusted devices and your recovery method, Apple cannot decrypt the protected data on your behalf. This is the same security property that prevents Apple from routinely reading it.

Provider comparison at a glance
The figures below are snapshots from US provider pages reviewed on October 13, 2026. They are not universal prices or a promise that plan names and benefits will remain unchanged.
| Service | Capacity and US monthly examples | People and ecosystem fit | Privacy model | Recovery or restoration | Sharing and collaboration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud+ | 50 GB ($0.99), 200 GB ($2.99), 2 TB ($9.99); 6 TB and 12 TB also listed, price not stated in the snapshot | Best integration with iPhone, iPad and Mac; family sharing with up to five others | Standard protection uses Apple-held keys for Drive, Photos, Notes and Backup; ADP makes those categories E2EE; Mail, Contacts and Calendars remain server-encrypted | ADP requires your device passcode/password, recovery contact or recovery key; Apple cannot recover protected keys | Apple ecosystem sharing and collaboration; exact behavior depends on the app and data type |
| Proton Drive | Free 5 GB plan; paid capacities and prices not stated in the source snapshot | Privacy-led alternative; assess its apps and workflow against your Apple usage | Proton advertises end-to-end and zero-access encryption, with the same encryption level on the free and paid plans | Account-recovery details should be reviewed before relying on it as your only copy | Password, expiry and revocation controls for shared files; Docs collaboration |
| Microsoft OneDrive / Microsoft 365 | Basic: 100 GB at $1.99/month; Personal: 1 TB at $9.99/month; Family: 2 TB shared at $12.99/month | Mac, iPhone and iPad support; Personal and Family include Microsoft productivity apps; Family supports up to six people | The cited plan page does not establish end-to-end encryption by default | Check the specific plan’s version-history and account-recovery terms | Strong fit for Microsoft 365 households and Office collaboration |
| Google One | Multiple capacity tiers; dependable displayed prices were not available in the source snapshot | Storage is pooled across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos; share with up to five others while each person’s content stays private | Encryption and key-control details were not established in the cited plan snapshot; evaluate privacy separately | Review Google account recovery and file-version options for your plan | Useful when your household already works in Google services |
| Dropbox Plus | 2 TB for one person at $9.99/month; Basic offers 2 GB | Standalone sync service with connected-device access | Plus is not described as end-to-end encrypted by default; the comparison associates E2EE with team Advanced features | 30-day deleted-file restoration | Transfers up to 50 GB; sharing is straightforward, but Plus is not a household pool |
Which alternative fits your actual priority?
Choose Proton Drive for a privacy-first file vault
Proton Drive is the clearest candidate when the primary requirement is that the provider should not be able to decrypt stored Drive content. Proton advertises end-to-end and zero-access encryption and gives its free 5 GB plan the same encryption level as paid plans. Shared links can have passwords, expiration dates and revocation, and Docs adds collaborative editing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat strength does not automatically make Proton Drive the best iCloud replacement. Confirm that its iPhone, iPad and Mac apps handle the photo-upload, file-provider and offline workflows you actually use. Decide how you will recover the account, how recipients will open protected links and where you will keep a second copy. It is a privacy-led storage service, not a promise that every Apple-specific feature will move with your files.

Choose iCloud+ with ADP when Apple integration outweighs switching
Keep iCloud+ if your daily workflow depends on Apple Photos synchronization, iCloud Drive in Finder and Files, Notes, device backup or HomeKit features. Enabling ADP gives the major file, photo, note and backup categories end-to-end encryption without leaving Apple’s ecosystem. You still retain Apple’s family sharing, Private Relay, Hide My Email and custom email-domain benefits where available.
The price of that integration is recovery responsibility. Configure a recovery contact or recovery key before enabling ADP, and test that you can access the recovery information without putting it in the same account you are protecting.
Choose OneDrive when Microsoft 365 is already your household’s workbench
OneDrive is compelling when the subscription is valuable for more than storage. The US plans list 100 GB Basic at $1.99 per month, 1 TB Personal at $9.99 and 2 TB shared among up to six people at $12.99. Personal and Family include Microsoft productivity applications, and Microsoft lists support for Mac, iPhone and iPad.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a bundle decision, not a privacy-equivalence decision. The cited plan information does not establish end-to-end encryption by default, so do not select OneDrive expecting the same key-control model as Proton Drive or iCloud ADP. Its advantage is reducing duplicate subscriptions and keeping household documents in the Microsoft workflow.

Choose Google One when Gmail, Drive and Photos already hold your life
Google One pools storage across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. You can share the pool with up to five other people while each person’s content remains private to that person. That arrangement is useful for a household that already uses Google accounts and wants one capacity pool rather than several unrelated subscriptions.
The provider snapshot available for this comparison did not provide dependable displayed prices, and it did not establish a specific end-to-end encryption model. Check the current price in your country and make a separate privacy decision instead of assuming that ecosystem convenience implies provider-blind encryption.
Choose Dropbox Plus for simple sync and file restoration
Dropbox Plus offers 2 TB for one person at $9.99 per month, connected-device access, transfers up to 50 GB and restoration of deleted files for 30 days. It is a practical standalone file-sync choice when you want a familiar folder model and do not need a pooled family plan or a productivity-suite bundle.

What switching does—and does not—change on an iPhone, iPad or Mac
Photos
A third-party app can upload photos, but that does not automatically reproduce Apple Photos synchronization, shared libraries, edits, albums or optimized-storage behavior. Before deleting anything from iCloud Photos, download full-resolution originals and verify that dates, edits and Live Photo components survived the transfer. Keep the originals until you have opened representative files on a second device.
Device backup
A file-sync subscription is not automatically an iPhone or iPad backup. The plans compared here do not establish full Apple-device backup replacement. If you leave iCloud+, maintain another tested backup method for device settings, app data and messages rather than assuming that a folder containing photos is sufficient.
Files and Finder/Files integration
OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and Proton Drive can provide their own apps and file-provider integrations, but their offline rules, conflict handling and selective-sync controls differ. Install the app on one test device, mark a small folder offline, edit a file on two devices and inspect the resulting version history before moving a large library.
Recommended Free Tools
Mail, Contacts and Calendars
Changing storage providers does not automatically migrate Apple Mail, Contacts or Calendars. Those categories also remain outside iCloud’s ADP end-to-end protection, so decide separately whether you are changing the account service, merely changing file storage or doing both.
A safe migration plan
- Write down what you are replacing. Separate iCloud Drive files, iCloud Photos, iCloud Backup, Notes, mail, contacts, calendars and shared folders. Mark which items must remain Apple-native.
- Check the destination’s limits and recovery terms. Confirm capacity in your country, the number of people included, device support, offline behavior, deleted-file restoration and how a locked account is recovered.
- Secure your Apple account first. If you will retain iCloud+ or enable ADP, add and verify a recovery contact or recovery key before changing storage settings. Store the recovery information somewhere you can reach if every Apple device is lost.
- Export before deleting. Download originals and documents from iCloud, preserve folder structure where possible and keep the export untouched until the new service has been verified.
- Run a small pilot. Move a representative set: large files, shared files, photos with edits, a note with attachments and a file that needs offline access. Test opening, editing, sharing and restoring each item.
- Configure automatic uploads deliberately. Choose whether the new app uploads only new photos or the entire library, whether cellular data is allowed and whether uploads continue in the background. Confirm the destination’s duplicate and conflict behavior.
- Move the remaining files in batches. Keep the original iCloud copy until counts, folder sizes and random file checks match. Do not empty Recently Deleted or cancel a plan during the transfer window.
- Recreate sharing. Existing iCloud links and shared albums may not carry over. Send new links, set passwords or expiry where available and ask recipients to confirm access on their own devices.
- Verify a restore, not just an upload. Delete a test file, recover it using the destination’s restoration control and open it on another device. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a tested backup.
- Downgrade only after the retention period you need. Check what happens when you exceed the free quota, how long deleted data remains and whether cancellation removes features such as Private Relay, Hide My Email or custom domains.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing headline terabytes only: a 2 TB personal plan, a 2 TB family pool and 2 TB spread across several services are different products.
- Calling all encryption “end-to-end”: identify the covered data categories and the key holder for your exact plan.
- Ignoring recovery: E2EE prevents the provider from rescuing protected keys. Save the recovery contact or key before enabling stronger protection.
- Assuming family sharing means shared files: iCloud+ and Google One can pool capacity while keeping each member’s content private; collaboration still requires explicit sharing.
- Deleting optimized photos: cloud placeholders are not full-resolution archives. Download originals and verify them first.
- Expecting an app to replace device backup: file sync, photo upload and a complete iPhone/iPad backup solve different problems.
- Using a personal plan for business-sensitive collaboration: check administrator controls, audit requirements, link permissions and encryption claims for the actual edition.
- Skipping a restore test: test recovery and version history before your old copy becomes the only remaining option.
A practical decision rule
Pick the service that wins on your most important constraint, then verify the two risks most likely to hurt you:
| Your deciding constraint | Most logical starting point | Verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Provider should not be able to decrypt files | Proton Drive; iCloud+ with ADP is another route for Apple-covered categories | Recovery method, app coverage, sharing workflow and metadata exposure |
| Apple Photos, backup and system integration | iCloud+ | Enable ADP correctly and preserve a recovery path |
| Microsoft 365 value for several people | OneDrive Family or Personal | Privacy requirements and the exact storage allocation per person |
| Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos in one pool | Google One | Current local price, account recovery and privacy expectations |
| Standalone sync with deleted-file restoration | Dropbox Plus | One-person limit and the absence of default E2EE on Plus |
Prices, plan names, regional features and encryption capabilities can change. Check the provider’s current page in your country immediately before subscribing, and keep an independent copy of irreplaceable data regardless of which service you choose.
