If you want a foldable phone now, Huawei’s current range offers two practical book-style designs—the Mate X7 and Mate X6—and a much more experimental tri-fold, the Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN. The right choice depends less on a universal “best” label than on your preferred screen layout, local availability, essential-app support, network compatibility and warranty coverage. Apple has not publicly confirmed a foldable iPhone or release date in the evidence available here, so treat the Apple premise as a personal waiting decision, not a scheduled launch.
First, what is actually known about Apple’s foldable iPhone?
There is no Apple primary-source announcement confirming a foldable iPhone, a model name or a launch date in the available evidence. That means you should not buy a Huawei phone because an Apple release is supposedly imminent, nor should you treat any rumored timetable as a commitment from Apple. “If you don’t want to wait” simply means you prefer to use a foldable device before Apple confirms one.
Huawei is a real, current alternative because its catalog includes multiple foldable formats. Its global phone catalog lists the Mate X7, Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN and Mate X6, while Huawei’s September 2026 launch announcement identifies the Mate XT 2 as its newer tri-fold addition. The models are not interchangeable: the X7 and X6 open like a small tablet, whereas the XT 2 folds across three connected sections.

Huawei Mate X7: the lighter book-style option
What it is
The Mate X7 is the most straightforward choice if you want the familiar book-style foldable arrangement: a normal-looking cover display for quick tasks and a larger interior display when you open the phone. Android Central’s hands-on report gives it a 235 g weight and IP58/IP59 ingress-protection ratings. Those figures come from that publication’s launch report, not from independent testing commissioned for this article.
Huawei unveiled the model in China on November 25 and introduced it globally at a Dubai event on December 11. The report said sales would follow in select Southeast Asian markets. It also reported a launch-equivalent price of €2,099/$2,459. “Equivalent” matters: those currency figures are not evidence of a current US or European retail listing, tax-inclusive price or local stock.
Why choose it
- The book-style layout is easier to understand than a three-panel device: closed, it behaves like a phone; open, it provides a tablet-like workspace.
- At 235 g in the cited hands-on report, it is lighter than many large foldables, which may matter if you carry it all day.
- The cited IP58/IP59 ratings indicate a level of dust and water protection, but a rating is not a promise that every liquid exposure or foldable failure will be covered by warranty.
What still needs checking
The available report does not establish current stock, the exact configuration sold in every country, network-band support, repair pricing or local warranty terms. Before paying a launch-equivalent price, confirm the seller’s regional SKU, return period and service location. Do not treat the report’s camera comparisons or any superlative in its headline as a verified ranking against every competing phone.
Huawei Mate X6: the best-documented conventional specification set
Screen and multitasking
Huawei’s Mate X6 product page lists a 7.93-inch inner display with a 2440 × 2240 resolution and a 6.45-inch cover screen. Both are specified with adaptive refresh rates from 1 to 120 Hz. The large interior panel is suitable for reading, document work and side-by-side tasks, while the cover screen lets you handle calls, messages and navigation without opening the phone.
Huawei says the Mate X6 can show up to three open apps at once. The company qualifies that feature: support depends on particular apps, app adaptation and, in some cases, a software update. Three app windows in the interface therefore do not guarantee that every banking, streaming, messaging or business app will resize correctly.

Water-resistance caveat
Huawei describes 2-metre IPX8 resistance but also warns that the product does not have “professional-level water resistance.” Read that as a risk-management instruction, not an invitation to submerge the phone. Keep liquid exposure away from the hinge, ports and inner screen, and check warranty exclusions before relying on any rating.
Who should pick the Mate X6?
Choose the Mate X6 when you want a conventional foldable and the published display, battery, charging and camera details help you evaluate hardware before purchase. It is not automatically the best value: the evidence here does not provide a same-market price, current inventory or independent battery and camera tests. Those missing details should be resolved for your country before you compare it with the X7.
Huawei Mate XT 2 ULTIMATE DESIGN: the tri-fold choice
What makes the design different
The Mate XT 2 folds across three sections rather than two. Huawei says its Live-Multitask mode can place three windows in parallel and lets you adjust their sizes. That could make a tri-fold useful for a document, reference page and communications app at the same time, or for monitoring several work surfaces without constantly switching views.
The practical benefit depends on software. A three-window mode is a Huawei feature claim; each app must support the relevant resizing and multi-window behavior. An app that remains phone-sized, forces a fixed orientation or blocks simultaneous use can reduce the advantage of the extra panel.
Launch facts and limits
Huawei’s September 11, 2026 press release says the Mate XT 2 was unveiled on September 7 and that China sales began on September 12 at RMB 19,999. The release describes HarmonyOS 7, three announced colors in China and a launch offer mentioning a stylus set. It does not establish that the stylus is sold separately, compatible with every regional version or available outside that offer.

RMB 19,999 is a China starting price. It should not be converted into a promised local price by applying an exchange rate: taxes, import costs, reseller margins, storage configuration and warranty can materially change the total. The available evidence also contains no independent camera evaluation of the Mate XT 2, so Huawei’s camera descriptions should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than measured rankings.

- Buy it only if you have a clear use for the much larger unfolded workspace, such as reading, planning or multi-window work.
- Accept that a tri-fold mechanism is a more unusual form factor and that local repair expertise may be harder to verify than for a standard phone.
- Confirm that the exact regional model supports your carrier, payment tools and essential applications before importing one.
IDC vice president of device research Bryan Ma described Huawei as standing alone “as an innovator” with the tri-fold design in an Associated Press report dated February 18, 2025. That is Ma’s assessment of the design at that time, not a reliability rating or a declaration that the Mate XT 2 is the best phone for every buyer.
Book-style or tri-fold: choose the workflow, not the novelty

There is no evidence here for a universal winner. The X7 and X6 are sensible starting points for most people who want the book-style experience; the XT 2 is the specialist option for buyers who can use and support a tri-fold workflow.
Software and app access: the check that can overturn your decision
The Associated Press reported in February 2025 that Huawei’s lack of access to Google services had limited the appeal of its phones. That is a broad platform constraint, not a current app-by-app compatibility table for every Mate X7, Mate X6 or Mate XT 2 version. Software availability can differ by country, HarmonyOS release, app developer and regional account system.
Before ordering, make a list of the applications you cannot replace. Check each one on the exact regional SKU, not merely on a product family page. Include:

Do not assume that an app’s presence in a store means every function works. Check notifications, background operation, location permissions, contactless payment, sign-in and subscription billing. If an essential service depends on Google Play services or a specific certification, obtain a current statement from the developer or seller before buying.
Availability, price and warranty: verify the transaction in your country
The source record describes different launch territories. The Mate XT 2 announcement concerns China sales. The Mate X7 report describes planned sales in select Southeast Asian markets. Neither establishes current stock worldwide, and the Mate X6 evidence does not provide a universal current price.
- Identify the exact SKU. Record the model number, storage configuration, firmware region and whether it is intended for your country.

Confusing a launch announcement with local availability
A press release can establish that a phone launched in China without proving that it can be purchased, activated or repaired elsewhere. Require a regional model number and written warranty terms.
Comparing unlike prices
The Mate X7’s €2,099/$2,459 figures are launch-equivalent values from a report; the Mate XT 2’s RMB 19,999 is a China starting price; the original Mate XT’s €3,499 figure dates to February 2025. Keep the market, date and generation attached to every number.

Assuming a water rating makes a foldable waterproof
The Mate X6 page itself rejects that interpretation by warning against treating its rating as professional-level water resistance. Use a case where appropriate, keep the hinge clean and follow the warranty’s liquid-damage terms.
Buying for camera language alone
Megapixels, adjustable apertures, optical zoom and branded processing systems describe hardware or manufacturer features. They do not establish image quality in every scene.
