For most new Q&A communities in 2026, official managed Discourse hosting is the safest starting point. It removes server setup, patching, backups and much of the email and security administration. Choose a self-managed VPS when you need infrastructure control, a fixed server budget, unusual integrations or the skills to maintain Docker and Linux. Discourse officially supports Docker-based installations on 64-bit Linux; its documented minimum is 1 GB RAM with swap and 10 GB of disk, while the cloud guide recommends at least 2 GB RAM, two CPU cores and 20 GB of disk for a more comfortable deployment.
Which hosting approach is best?
There is no universally fastest or most reliable provider for every Q&A site. Discourse’s own documentation supports several cloud providers, and no comparable independent benchmark establishes a winner for real Q&A workloads. The practical choice is therefore operational: decide who will handle the server, upgrades, backups, email delivery and incident recovery.
| Choose this | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official managed Discourse hosting | You want a community online without becoming its system administrator. | Less infrastructure control and a recurring managed-service bill. |
| Self-hosted VPS | You can administer Linux and Docker, or already operate cloud servers. | You own every update, backup, monitoring and security task. |
| AWS EC2 or Lightsail | Your organization already uses AWS services, billing or networking. | More account, network and configuration decisions than a managed plan. |
| Another supported VPS or cloud provider | Region, price or existing expertise makes another provider preferable. | Support and operations remain your responsibility unless you add a managed administrator. |
For a volunteer group, small business or first community, managed hosting usually provides the best risk-adjusted result. For a technical owner with strict data-location, networking or deployment requirements, a VPS can be the better long-term fit.

What managed Discourse hosting includes
Discourse says its official hosting takes care of setup, maintenance and server management. Its hosted plans include Free, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers. The exact limits and features depend on the current plan, so confirm storage, visitor limits, support scope, backup retention and custom-domain requirements before subscribing.

Why managed hosting is attractive
- Faster launch: the provider provisions the application instead of asking you to prepare a Linux server and Docker installation.
- Routine maintenance: operating-system, container and Discourse maintenance are handled within the service’s operating model.
- Lower operational risk: you do not need to design your own patching schedule, monitoring stack or recovery runbook before launch.
- Support boundary: you have a defined service to contact when a platform-level problem occurs.
What managed hosting does not remove
- You still need a domain, DNS access and an administrator who can manage users, categories, moderation and content policy.
- You must configure and verify outbound email, including the sender domain and authentication records required by your mail provider.
- You should export important data and understand the provider’s backup and migration process rather than assuming that hosting alone is a complete disaster-recovery plan.
- Plan limits still matter: a sudden traffic spike, large media library or high email volume may require an upgrade.
What self-hosted Discourse requires
Discourse’s installation documentation states that the only officially supported installations are Docker based. A self-hosted deployment therefore needs SSH access to a 64-bit Linux server with Docker support. You are responsible for the host and for the application running inside it.
Minimum and recommended hardware
| Resource | Documented minimum | Cloud-guide recommendation | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Modern single-core CPU | Two or more CPU cores | These are installation guidance figures, not an independent capacity benchmark. |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM with swap | 2 GB RAM or more | Swap helps avoid abrupt out-of-memory failures but is slower than physical RAM. |
| Storage | 10 GB disk | 20 GB disk or more | Allow additional capacity for uploads, logs, updates and backups. |
| Operating system | 64-bit Linux with Docker support and SSH access. | ||
The minimum is a floor for getting an installation running, not a promise of comfortable performance under a busy community. Uploaded images, search indexes, database growth, background jobs and backup archives all consume resources. Starting at the cloud guide’s 2 GB RAM, two-core and 20 GB disk recommendation gives more headroom, but it still does not predict capacity for your member count or traffic pattern.
Administrative responsibilities
- Provision and harden the Linux host, restrict SSH access and keep packages current.
- Install and maintain Docker and the Discourse container configuration.
- Configure DNS, TLS certificates and outbound email authentication.
- Schedule off-server backups, test restoration and monitor disk, memory, CPU, mail delivery and certificate expiry.
- Apply Discourse upgrades, read release notes and keep a rollback or recovery procedure.
- Control firewall rules, credentials, administrator accounts and any plugins or integrations.
Supported cloud and VPS choices
Discourse’s cloud guide lists DigitalOcean, AWS EC2, Google Cloud Platform, Linode/Akamai, Vultr, Hetzner and any VPS with root SSH access as supported choices. This makes provider selection primarily a question of price, region, support, backups, network policy and your comfort with Linux administration.
| Provider or route | Best fit | Operational notes | Published pricing or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | Technical owners who want straightforward VPS billing. | You manage Linux, Docker, updates, backups, monitoring and email. | Public Basic plans are listed at $4/month for 512 MiB, $6/month for 1 GiB and $12/month for 2 GiB. These are published list prices that can change; the 2 GiB tier aligns with Discourse’s cloud recommendation. |
| AWS EC2 | Teams already using AWS networking, identity, monitoring or consolidated billing. | Choose an instance, storage, security groups, IP and backup design; all remain your responsibility. | Discourse lists EC2 as supported. Current AWS pricing varies by region, instance, storage, data transfer and purchase model. |
| AWS Lightsail | Small teams wanting a simpler AWS VPS interface and predictable monthly maximum. | AWS describes Lightsail as a VPS for developers and small businesses with fixed hourly pricing up to a monthly maximum. Validate the current Discourse installer and image requirements before deployment. | Price depends on the selected bundle, region, storage, transfer and optional services. |
| Google Cloud, Linode/Akamai, Vultr or Hetzner | Buyers optimizing for a particular region, price or existing expertise. | Use a root-capable 64-bit Linux VPS and operate the stack yourself unless you add outside administration. | Discourse lists these providers as supported choices; current prices and included backups differ. |
| Any root-SSH VPS | An experienced operator with a provider not named above. | Compatibility, networking policy, SMTP access, storage reliability and recovery tools must be checked before committing. | Discourse’s guide allows any VPS with root SSH access, subject to the documented Docker and Linux requirements. |
Shared hosting is inexpensive but generally resource constrained and does not provide the Docker-level control Discourse requires. VPS hosting offers more predictable resources with hands-on administration. Cloud services add flexible regions and integrations, while dedicated servers are usually justified only for large or unusually demanding workloads. These are comparison axes, not guarantees of a specific Q&A site’s speed or uptime.

How to launch a self-hosted Q&A site
The exact installer screens and commands can change, so follow the current Discourse installation guide for the release you deploy. The sequence below shows the decisions and checks that should occur before inviting members.
- Select a region and server size. Pick a location close to your main audience, start with at least the cloud guide’s 2 GB RAM, two cores and 20 GB disk, and verify that the provider permits SMTP traffic and offers recoverable snapshots or backups.
- Create a 64-bit Linux VPS with root or administrative SSH access. Record the server’s public IP, restrict inbound ports with the provider firewall, and use key-based SSH rather than a shared password.
- Apply host security updates. Create a non-root administrator, disable unnecessary services, configure a firewall for SSH and web traffic, and set a maintenance process for future Linux updates.
- Install Docker and the current Discourse container tooling. Discourse officially supports Docker-based installs; do not substitute an unsupported package-based deployment if you need an officially supported path.
- Run the Discourse setup wizard. Supply the forum hostname, administrator account and mail settings. Use a real fully qualified domain name rather than an IP address so TLS and email authentication can work correctly.
- Publish DNS records. Point the domain’s A or AAAA record to the VPS, allow DNS propagation, and add the sender-domain records requested by your mail provider, commonly SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
- Verify HTTPS and email before launch. Test certificate issuance, password resets, invitations, notifications and unsubscribe behavior. A forum that displays correctly but cannot deliver mail is not ready for public registration.
- Configure backups and monitoring. Store backups away from the VPS, alert on failed jobs and low disk space, and perform a restoration test before treating the backup as reliable.
- Set moderation and resource policies. Establish categories, trust levels, upload limits, spam controls, administrator recovery accounts and a process for handling abuse reports.
- Perform a staged launch. Invite a small test group, watch memory, CPU, storage and mail delivery, then open registration after the recovery and moderation workflows have been exercised.
DigitalOcean deployment considerations
A 2 GiB Basic Droplet is the first DigitalOcean size in the supplied public pricing that matches Discourse’s cloud-guide memory recommendation: the listed price is $12 per month, while the 512 MiB and 1 GiB plans are listed at $4 and $6 per month respectively. Those figures are current published list prices in the comparison material and are subject to change; they do not include every possible backup, storage, bandwidth or tax charge.
Do not select the $4 or $6 plan merely because the application may install on it. The documented minimum is 1 GB RAM with swap, and the 512 MiB tier is below that figure. A 1 GiB plan reaches the stated minimum only if swap and the rest of the deployment are configured appropriately; it does not equal the recommended 2 GB starting point.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before creating the Droplet, check the selected data-center region, backup options, snapshot pricing, IPv4 availability, SMTP policy and how you will restore to a new server. Treat the provider’s dashboard as one part of the system: your runbook should also contain SSH recovery details, DNS access and an off-provider copy of critical backups.

AWS EC2 versus Lightsail
When EC2 makes sense
EC2 fits organizations that already use AWS identity, virtual private networks, load-balancing, monitoring or infrastructure-as-code. It offers many instance and storage combinations, but that flexibility adds choices about security groups, Elastic IPs, block storage, snapshots, IAM permissions and data transfer. Budgeting must include those components rather than only the hourly instance rate.
When Lightsail makes sense
Lightsail presents a simpler VPS model with fixed hourly pricing up to a monthly maximum, aimed at developers and small businesses. It can reduce the number of AWS decisions for a single forum, but you still administer Linux, Docker, upgrades, backups and mail. Confirm that the current Lightsail image, kernel, networking and SMTP behavior work with the current Discourse installer before migrating a production community.
Common AWS decision
If your team cannot explain who will patch the host, restore the database, renew certificates and investigate a mail-delivery failure, neither EC2 nor Lightsail is operationally managed just because it is an AWS product. Use official managed Discourse hosting or contract an administrator when that ownership is unclear.
Budgeting beyond the advertised server price
Estimate the complete monthly and annual cost before choosing a host. The server or managed plan is only one line item.

- Compute: the VPS, managed plan or AWS bundle.
- Storage: extra block storage for uploads, databases and logs.
- Backups: automated snapshots, off-site object storage and retention.
- Bandwidth: outbound transfer, image downloads and email volume.
- Domain and DNS: registration renewals and any premium DNS service.
- Email delivery: a transactional mail provider may be required for reliable notifications and password resets.
- Administration: your own time or a contractor’s fee for patching, monitoring and incident response.
- Recovery capacity: a standby VPS or temporary larger server can shorten an outage.
A low headline price can be misleading if it excludes backups, support or the time needed to keep a public service secure. Conversely, a managed plan can cost more than a small VPS while being cheaper than a single serious outage for a team without Linux expertise.
Email, DNS and deliverability
Q&A communities depend on email for account verification, password recovery, mentions, replies and moderation alerts. Configure the forum’s sender domain deliberately rather than relying on a shared or unverified address.
- Use a domain you control and publish the authentication records required by your mail service.
- Send test messages to multiple providers and inspect spam placement, links, reply addresses and bounce handling.
- Verify that the server or cloud provider allows the SMTP connections your mail service needs.
- Keep administrator recovery email addresses separate from the forum’s public contact address.
- Monitor delivery failures after upgrades, DNS changes and domain-renewal events.
Managed hosting can simplify some of this work, but it does not remove the need to own the domain and verify that members actually receive critical messages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBackups, security and recovery
Backups that are useful
Keep more than one recent backup, store at least one copy outside the production server or provider account, and test a restoration to a temporary environment. A successful backup job without a tested restore is only an assumption. Include the database, uploaded files, configuration and any secrets needed to reconnect the installation.

Security controls
- Use SSH keys, least-privilege accounts and multi-factor authentication on the cloud and domain accounts.
- Limit exposed ports and review firewall rules after every infrastructure change.
- Patch Linux, Docker and Discourse on a planned schedule, with a maintenance window and rollback plan.
- Remove unused plugins and integrations; each additional component expands the update and security surface.
- Monitor authentication failures, disk growth, memory pressure, certificate expiry and unusual email volume.
Recovery priorities
- Identify whether the problem is DNS, the host, Docker, the database, storage, TLS or email.
- Preserve logs and avoid destructive troubleshooting before confirming that a current backup exists.
- Restore to a clean or replacement VPS when the production host is compromised or unrecoverable.
- Update DNS and verify HTTPS, login, search, uploads and email before reopening registration.
- Document the cause and change the runbook so the same failure is faster to resolve.
Scaling a growing community
Start by measuring rather than guessing. Watch memory usage, swap activity, CPU saturation, database growth, upload storage, queue delays and email throughput during normal and peak periods.
Scale vertically first
Increasing RAM, CPU and disk on the existing VPS is usually the simplest early move. Move before the server runs out of memory or storage, and confirm that the provider supports a safe resize or snapshot-based migration.
Reduce avoidable load
- Set sensible upload dimensions and retention limits.
- Remove abandoned plugins and background jobs.
- Review notification settings that generate unnecessary mail.
- Keep logs and backups from consuming the production disk.
Use a more complex architecture only when needed
Separate database, application, object storage, load balancing or multiple application nodes can help at larger scale, but each adds networking, backup and failure modes. A managed Discourse plan may be a better operational step than designing this architecture yourself if the team does not already run distributed services.
Migration and portability
Discourse is open source and built on Ruby on Rails, Ember.js and PostgreSQL. That stack and the Docker deployment model make a move between suitable hosts practical, but portability still depends on having usable backups, DNS control, email credentials and a tested procedure.
- Lower DNS time-to-live before the migration while the old site remains healthy.
- Provision and secure the destination before taking the final backup.
- Restore the database, uploads and configuration, then test privately using a temporary hostname or hosts-file entry.
- Freeze writes briefly, take a final backup, restore changes and verify accounts, posts, search, uploads and email.
- Switch DNS, monitor both environments and keep the old server available until the new site is confirmed stable.
Ask a managed provider how exports are delivered and what assistance is available before signing up. For self-hosting, document every credential and integration so a future administrator can reproduce the deployment.
A decision framework for 2026
| Your situation | Recommended path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are launching your first community and do not routinely administer Linux. | Official managed Discourse hosting | It minimizes setup and ongoing server work. |
| You administer Linux, Docker and backups and want control over region and infrastructure. | Self-hosted VPS with at least the cloud-guide recommendation | You can trade convenience for control responsibly. |
| Your company already standardizes on AWS. | EC2 for maximum AWS integration, or Lightsail for a simpler VPS model after compatibility validation. | Existing skills and account tooling reduce the operational burden. |
| Your audience is concentrated in a region where another listed provider has better pricing or latency. | Google Cloud, Linode/Akamai, Vultr, Hetzner or another root-SSH VPS listed by Discourse | Region and existing expertise can outweigh small headline price differences. |
| You need custom networking, compliance controls or unusual integrations. | Self-hosted infrastructure, possibly with a contracted administrator | Managed hosting may not expose the controls you require. |
| You cannot assign responsibility for patching, backups and incident response. | Managed hosting | Unowned operational tasks are a predictable source of outages and data loss. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by price alone: a plan below the documented memory requirement can create swap pressure and failed upgrades.
- Treating installation as completion: a working forum still needs email, backups, monitoring, updates and moderation.
- Keeping backups on the same VPS: disk failure, account loss or compromise can remove both production data and its backup.
- Skipping a restore test: an untested archive may be incomplete or impossible to use.
- Ignoring SMTP restrictions: registration and password recovery fail when outbound mail is blocked or unauthenticated.
- Adding plugins without an upgrade plan: compatibility problems can delay security updates.
- Assuming a provider label means managed service: EC2, Lightsail and VPS products still leave operating-system and application administration with you.
- Publishing unsupported performance claims: provider marketing or a small synthetic test does not establish real Q&A workload speed or uptime.
Bottom-line recommendation
Start with official managed Discourse hosting when your priority is a dependable launch with minimal server administration. Choose a self-managed VPS when you deliberately want control and can meet the Docker, Linux, backup, email, monitoring and security obligations. DigitalOcean’s published 2 GiB Basic Droplet price of $12 per month is a transparent self-hosting reference point that matches Discourse’s recommended memory, while AWS EC2, Lightsail and other listed clouds make sense when their regions or existing tooling matter. In every case, size from the documented requirements, budget for the complete operating model and validate recovery before inviting the public.
