For a personal website in 2026, the best host depends on how the site is built. Use Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages for a free static portfolio or résumé, WordPress.com for the simplest managed WordPress experience, SiteGround when hands-on support and WordPress tooling matter, Vercel for a framework application, and Netlify when forms, previews and deployment workflow are priorities.
Do not choose on the introductory monthly price alone. Compare the first-year offer with renewal pricing, storage, bandwidth, deployment limits, custom-domain support, backups, security, technical effort and any commercial-use restrictions. Free hosting is often excellent for a personal résumé, but the same limits can become a problem once you add a database, server-side code, a store or substantial traffic.
The short answer
| Host | Best for | Cost evidence available for 2026 | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SiteGround | Small WordPress or conventional personal site needing support | Reviewed shared plan: $2.99/month, 10GB storage, unmetered bandwidth, SSL and 24/7 support (TechRadar, 2026) | Recurring hosting cost and a more traditional administration model |
| WordPress.com | Managed WordPress with guided setup | Plans displayed from $2.75/month when billed every three years (official pricing page accessed October 15, 2026) | Less server control than self-managed hosting |
| Cloudflare Pages | Static portfolio, résumé, blog or documentation site deployed from a repository | Free tier available; paid Pages Functions usage was reported with a $5/month Workers Paid minimum in a June 24, 2026 comparison | Requires a repository-based workflow and quota checking |
| GitHub Pages | Simple static site already maintained in GitHub | Free; documented limits include a 1GB published site and a soft 100GB monthly bandwidth limit | Size, deployment, bandwidth and use restrictions |
| Vercel | Next.js and similar framework applications | Pro reported at $20/month plus usage in a June 24, 2026 comparison | Usage billing and plan rules, especially for commercial projects |
| Netlify | Sites needing previews, forms, plugins and workflow features | Personal reported at $9/month and Pro at $20/month in a June 24, 2026 comparison | Build, bandwidth and function quotas must be monitored |
Prices and quotas can change. Treat the dated figures above as decision references, not permanent offers; confirm the live plan page, renewal price and current limits before committing a domain or production site.

Start by classifying your website
Static portfolio or résumé
A static site is made from files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts. It does not need a server-side database or application runtime. This is the least expensive category: a free deployment platform can serve the site globally, and you pay only for a domain if you want a custom address.
#1 Best Overall
- TRUE PLUG-AND-PLAY HOME SERVER: Forget complex VPS setups or command lines. Simply connect power and Ethernet to start hosting immediately with zero technical skills required. This managed, all-in-one appliance is the easiest way to run blogs (compatible with WordPress), private applications, and bots directly from home using your own domain.
- NO MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEES: Stop renting server space. Enjoy a one-time hardware purchase model with absolutely no recurring hosting fees for typical usage. The system includes a generous monthly traffic allowance that covers the needs of almost all personal and small business websites, allowing the device to pay for itself quickly.
- INSTANT ONE-CLICK APP LIBRARY: Instantly deploy over 50 curated open-source applications without hassle. The diverse ecosystem includes essential tools, compatible with WordPress, Ghost, Nextcloud (for private cloud storage), Joomla, and OpenClaw. Perfect for content management, e-commerce, private email, and business tools.
- INCLUDES FREE SSL & ENTERPRISE SECURITY: Get professional performance and safety without the extra costs. Seamlessly integrate your existing custom domain or utilize the included free subdomain. Your sites are automatically secured with free SSL certificates, built-in DDoS protection, and global CDN acceleration.
- TOTAL DATA PRIVACY & OWNERSHIP: Keep your digital assets secure on your own local hardware, not on third-party "big tech" servers. Designed for privacy-conscious individuals, creators, and small businesses seeking platform independence. Includes an intuitive web management portal for complete peace of mind.
Cloudflare Pages is the strongest value candidate when you are comfortable connecting a Git repository and want edge delivery. GitHub Pages is convenient when the source already lives in GitHub and the site is simple. Both are appropriate for a résumé, personal profile, project gallery or documentation site, provided you stay within their published limits.
WordPress or a content-heavy personal site
Choose WordPress.com when you want hosting, updates, security and support handled in one managed service. Its paid plans include hosting, a free domain for the first year, ad-free browsing, unlimited pages and users, malware protection, free support and plugin installation on paid plans, according to its official pricing page.
Choose SiteGround when you want a conventional hosting account with WordPress tools and human support. It is a better fit if you expect to manage domains, email, staging or server settings yourself rather than staying inside a fully guided builder.
Recommended Free Tools
Framework application
For a Next.js or similar application, Vercel aligns the deployment model with the framework: connect a repository, build on each change and use preview deployments for branches or pull requests. The convenience is valuable for developers, but you must understand usage billing and the current rules for commercial use on the Hobby plan before launching a business project.
Content workflow, forms or previews
Netlify is the better match when the deployment dashboard is part of the product. Deploy previews, built-in forms, plugins and workflow-oriented features can save time for documentation teams and content projects. Confirm current build minutes, bandwidth and serverless-function quotas because exceeding a free or low-cost allowance can change the monthly bill.
What each option actually gives you
SiteGround: supported conventional hosting
SiteGround suits a small WordPress installation or a conventional personal site where support, SSL, backups and WordPress optimization are more important than the absolute lowest recurring price. TechRadar’s 2026 review lists a shared plan at $2.99 per month with 10GB storage, unmetered bandwidth, SSL and 24/7 support. That is a reviewed plan description, not a promise that every region, term or renewal will have the same price.

The main advantage is guided administration. You receive a control panel, domain and SSL management, WordPress installation tools and a support channel for issues that would otherwise require command-line troubleshooting. The trade-off is that you pay an ongoing hosting charge even when a static site could run at no infrastructure cost.
Use it when: you need WordPress, server-side features, traditional email or a support team. Look elsewhere when: the site is only a few static files and keeping recurring cost near zero is the priority.
- Choose the shortest term that still gives you a comfortable trial period, and record both the introductory and renewal prices before checkout.
- Connect your domain by changing the registrar’s nameservers or the DNS records specified in the hosting account.
- Enable the included SSL certificate, force HTTPS and turn on automatic WordPress updates where compatible.
- Configure scheduled backups and test restoring one before publishing important content.
WordPress.com: managed WordPress in one service
WordPress.com removes most server administration. The service bundles hosting and management, so you do not have to patch an operating system, tune a web server or assemble separate backup and malware tools. The official pricing page accessed October 15, 2026 lists paid plans with hosting, a free domain for the first year, ad-free browsing, unlimited pages and users, malware protection, free support and plugin installation on paid plans. It displays plans starting at $2.75 per month when billed every three years.
The long billing term is important: $2.75 per month is not the same as paying monthly, and a first-year domain incentive does not mean the domain remains free forever. Check the renewal price, renewal date and what happens if you downgrade before choosing a plan.
Use it when: you want a guided WordPress setup, managed security and minimal maintenance. Look elsewhere when: you need unrestricted server access, custom background services or a deployment pipeline built around Git.
- Create the site in the managed dashboard and select a theme that supports your content structure.
- Choose the temporary site address first; attach your custom domain only after the pages and navigation are ready.
- Review privacy, search-engine visibility and comment settings before launch.
- Install plugins only when the selected paid plan supports them, and remove unused plugins to reduce maintenance and security risk.
Cloudflare Pages: low-cost static delivery
Cloudflare Pages is designed for static sites built from a repository. A typical workflow is: push files to Git, connect the repository, select the build command and output directory, and let each commit trigger a deployment. You can test a generated preview before changing the production branch.

It is a strong choice for a technically comfortable owner who wants a free or very low-cost site delivered from an edge network. If you add server-side behavior through Pages Functions, costs and quotas become relevant. A June 24, 2026 comparison reported a $5 per month minimum for the Workers Paid plan used with Pages Functions; verify the current pricing and included usage before relying on that figure.
Custom-domain behavior, build limits and free-tier quotas can change. Read the current limits for the framework, build minutes, request volume and functions you intend to use.
- Put the site in a Git repository with a reproducible build process.
- In the Pages dashboard, create a project, select the repository and set the production branch.
- Enter the framework preset, build command and output directory exactly as your local project uses them.
- Deploy a preview, check asset paths and redirects, then attach the custom domain and verify HTTPS.
- Record the free-tier limits and set usage alerts if you enable functions.
GitHub Pages: simple hosting inside GitHub
GitHub Pages is convenient when your site is already version-controlled in GitHub and remains static. It is a natural home for a résumé, project documentation or a small portfolio: edit a file, commit it and let the Pages workflow publish the result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Documented restrictions matter before you recommend it for a business. The researched comparison reports a 1GB published-site limit, a 10-minute deployment timeout and a soft 100GB monthly bandwidth limit. GitHub also documents restrictions on how Pages may be used. Confirm the current documentation for commercial use, build processing, bandwidth and repository settings before making the site a sales or customer-facing property.
GitHub Pages does not provide a database, server-side checkout or general-purpose application server. A contact form therefore needs an external form service or a mail link, and that service has its own privacy and availability considerations.
- Create a repository for the site and keep the generated files within the documented size limits.
- Choose the publishing source in the repository’s Pages settings, either a branch and folder or a configured deployment workflow.
- Open the generated address and test every relative link, image and downloadable résumé file.
- Add a custom domain through the Pages settings and your registrar’s DNS records, then confirm HTTPS.
- Monitor repository size, deployment duration and monthly traffic as the portfolio grows.
Vercel: framework-first deployments
Vercel is optimized for Next.js and comparable frameworks. Its repository integration can build every commit, create previews for branches and promote a tested deployment to production. That model is more capable than a basic static host when the site has server-rendered pages, API routes, image processing or application logic.

A June 24, 2026 comparison reported the Pro plan at $20 per month plus usage. That figure should be treated as dated comparison data rather than a guaranteed current bill. Read the current included limits and overage pricing for builds, bandwidth, functions, image optimization and other metered services.
The free Hobby plan may be suitable for a noncommercial personal project, but check the current commercial-use rules before placing client work, advertising revenue or a company site on it. A personal name in the domain does not by itself determine whether a project is commercial.
- Push the application to a supported Git provider and verify that it builds locally with a clean install.
- Import the repository, set environment variables and select the production branch.
- Use preview deployments to test framework routing, metadata, forms and environment-specific settings.
- Attach the domain only after the production deployment works; then configure redirects and canonical URLs.
- Review usage analytics and billing alerts before enabling high-volume functions or media processing.
Netlify: workflow features for content teams
Netlify is a good fit when the site process matters as much as the hosting layer. Deploy previews let editors review a change before it reaches production. Forms, plugins and a workflow-oriented dashboard can reduce the need to assemble separate services for common content tasks.
The June 24, 2026 comparison reported a Personal plan at $9 per month and a Pro plan at $20 per month. These are dated figures; verify the live plan names, included build minutes, bandwidth, form submissions and function quotas. A low base price can become expensive if a documentation site runs frequent builds or receives a large file download volume.
- Connect the repository and specify the build command and publish directory.
- Set environment variables separately for deploy previews and production.
- Enable preview deployments and require a review before publishing the production branch.
- Configure forms with spam protection, notification recipients and a retention policy for submissions.
- Attach the custom domain, verify HTTPS and monitor build and bandwidth usage.
Free hosting: when it is enough and when it is not
Free hosting is usually enough for a résumé, a low-traffic portfolio, a personal landing page or static documentation. You can spend nothing on infrastructure and use your budget for a domain, professional email or design.
It becomes a poor fit when you need any of the following:

- Large media files, frequent downloads or traffic that could exceed a soft bandwidth allowance.
- Business use prohibited by the service’s current terms.
- Automatic backups and one-click restoration for content you cannot recreate from Git.
A static host can still support a commercial site if its terms allow it, but do not infer permission from the fact that a deployment is technically possible. Review the current acceptable-use and commercial-use language for the exact plan.
First-year price versus renewal price
Promotional pricing is often conditional on a long prepayment term. A monthly equivalent shown on a landing page may require paying one, two or three years in advance. Domain registration, privacy protection, email, premium themes, backups and overage usage may be separate charges.
Before buying, write down these figures:
- Total amount charged today, including taxes and the domain.
- Renewal amount for hosting and domain separately.
- Billing frequency and the cancellation deadline.
- Storage, bandwidth, build, function and form allowances.
- Price of restoring a backup or moving to a higher plan.
For project-based platforms, estimate usage rather than multiplying the advertised base price. A framework site with image optimization and server functions may cost more than a static site with the same visitor count.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCustom-domain setup without surprises
You can register a domain with one company and host the site elsewhere. The host will provide either nameservers or specific DNS records. Nameservers delegate the whole DNS zone; individual records let you keep email and other services with the current DNS provider.
- Copy the host’s required record values exactly, including the record type and any trailing dot shown by the provider.
- Lower the DNS time-to-live before a planned migration if you need a faster rollback.
- Add the domain in the hosting dashboard before changing DNS, so the host can issue the certificate.
- Change records at the registrar, then wait for propagation; different networks may update at different times.
- Test the root domain, the www version, HTTPS, redirects, sitemap and email after the change.
Security, backups and maintenance
SSL is necessary but not sufficient. Keep the content management system, themes, plugins and build dependencies updated. Use a unique administrator password and multifactor authentication wherever available. Remove unused plugins, repository tokens and DNS records.
Git history is not a complete backup if it does not contain uploaded media, a database or form submissions. For WordPress, schedule backups that include both files and the database, and periodically perform a restoration test. For static sites, keep the source repository, generated assets and domain/DNS instructions in a second location.
Check that your privacy notice matches analytics, contact forms, cookies and any third-party services. A free host does not remove your responsibility for data protection, accessibility or copyright.

Answer these questions in order:
- Is the site entirely static? If yes, start with Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages.
- Do you need WordPress without server administration? Choose WordPress.com.
- Do you need WordPress plus conventional hosting support? Evaluate SiteGround and compare its renewal price with the managed alternative.
- Does the project use Next.js or another framework with server features? Start with Vercel and calculate expected usage.
- Are previews, forms and content workflow central? Evaluate Netlify.
- Will the site become commercial? Read the plan’s current commercial-use terms and budget for support, backups and usage rather than assuming a free tier will remain suitable.
Recommendation by reader type
- Student or job seeker with a résumé: GitHub Pages if the files already live in GitHub; Cloudflare Pages if you want a more flexible repository deployment.
- Designer with a visual portfolio: A static deployment is usually the lowest-cost route; select the platform whose build process you can maintain.
- Writer or hobby publisher: WordPress.com for managed publishing, or SiteGround if you want a conventional WordPress account and more administration control.
- Developer building an interactive demo: Vercel for a framework application; Cloudflare Pages for a primarily static project with limited edge functions.
- Documentation maintainer: Netlify when preview and editorial workflow features justify the cost; GitHub Pages for a straightforward repository-published site.
For most personal projects, the best first decision is architectural rather than brand-based: keep a simple site static until it genuinely needs WordPress, a database or application logic. That choice minimizes maintenance, makes migration easier and keeps the recurring bill predictable.
