Resident Evil 2 (the remake) is the safest starting point: Steam Deck HQ reports it as both Deck Verified and ProtonDB Platinum. For different kinds of fear, choose Alien: Isolation for stealth, SOMA for story and atmosphere, Outlast for relentless chases, or Dead Space for action-oriented survival horror. Phasmophobia is the multiplayer option, but microphone, anti-cheat and online-service behavior make it a less predictable Deck recommendation.

Compatibility is not permanent. Check the current Steam store page, Steam Deck compatibility notes and the latest ProtonDB reports immediately before installing. A game that works after one Proton release or game patch can behave differently after another.

How Steam Deck and Proton compatibility actually works

Steam Deck runs a Linux-based operating system. Many games sold for Windows use Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer, rather than a native Linux build. Proton translates the game’s Windows graphics, input and system calls so SteamOS can launch them.

Valve’s first-party signal is the Deck Verified system. Valve says that “After each game is reviewed, it is categorized for its level of compatibility of Steam Deck.” A Verified mark means Valve’s review found the game suitable under its criteria at that time; it is not a promise that every future game patch, launcher change or Proton update will behave identically.

Steam uses four compatibility categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. The label is a useful first filter, not the final decision. Open the store page’s compatibility details and read any notes about text size, keyboard prompts, launchers, input or other caveats.

ProtonDB adds community reports. Its aggregate medals and individual reports can reveal launch options, controller problems, video glitches, shader-compilation stutter or regressions that an official label may not describe. Treat a recent report as practical evidence, not a guarantee: reports are made on particular Deck images, Proton versions, game builds and settings.

Why Resident Evil 2 is the lead recommendation

The remake has the clearest evidence in this group. Steam Deck HQ reports it as Deck Verified and ProtonDB Platinum, the strongest ProtonDB medal. That combination makes it the best first installation for a reader who wants polished survival horror without beginning with extensive troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal is also easy to define: it is structured survival horror rather than a purely scripted chase game, so exploration, resource decisions and combat all matter. The recommendation is about compatibility confidence, not a promise of a fixed frame rate. No source in the cited coverage publishes a comparable FPS figure for this shortlist, so do not use an unverified performance number when planning your purchase.

Before starting, confirm the current Steam page still shows the expected Deck status and inspect the latest ProtonDB reports. A patch or Proton revision can change shader behavior, controls or video playback even when the store label remains unchanged.

Choose the horror style you actually want

Alien: Isolation — stealth and sustained tension

Choose Alien: Isolation if the appeal is being hunted rather than overpowering enemies. Steam Deck HQ includes it in its Deck horror recommendations as a strong single-player choice. Its defining experience is prolonged stealth tension: you spend more time listening, hiding and planning routes than trading shots.

The cited coverage does not establish a current Valve label, a ProtonDB medal or a universal launch option for every Deck setup. Check the game’s current ProtonDB reports, paying particular attention to controller behavior, cut-scene playback and any recent regressions. If the default Proton version has a problem, Steam allows a per-game compatibility-tool override (described below).

SOMA — atmospheric, story-led science-fiction horror

SOMA fits players who value narrative, isolation and sound design over constant combat. It appears in the same Steam Deck recommendation coverage and is commonly treated as a low-input, headphone-focused experience. That makes it a practical choice for handheld play when you want the atmosphere to carry the horror.

Do not infer a specific Deck label or medal from its appearance in a recommendation list; those values are not stated in the cited coverage. Check the current store notes and ProtonDB reports before installing, especially if you rely on external audio devices or want uninterrupted video playback.

Outlast and Outlast 2 — chase-heavy first-person horror

Outlast and Outlast 2 are the picks for readers who want first-person pursuit, vulnerability and short bursts of frantic escape. Steam Deck HQ includes the series in its recommendation coverage. They are single-player games, so they avoid the online-service and anti-cheat variables that can complicate multiplayer titles.

The cited sources do not establish one current compatibility label, medal or settings profile for both games. Treat each store entry and ProtonDB report separately. A good report should tell you whether the current build launches, recognizes the controls and exhibits video or shader issues on the Proton version you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dead Space — action-oriented survival horror

Dead Space is the better fit when you want combat and resource management alongside horror. The recommendation coverage includes the series, but the original release and the remake should not be treated as interchangeable installations. The remake is more demanding, so verify its current ProtonDB entry and Deck notes independently rather than assuming the older game’s behavior carries over.

  • Oleophobic Coating for Easy Cleaning – Anti-fingerprint coating reduces smudges and oil marks, making daily wipes effortless and keeping the screen looking fresh.
  • Original Touch Experience Preserved: Specially crafted adhesive for seamless, responsive touch — no lag, no resistance, no difference
  • Perfect Fit for Your Device – Precision-cut for [Model], delivering accurate alignment and a clean, flush finish

No comparable FPS result is established for either release in the cited material. Use current community reports to look for shader-compilation stutter, graphics glitches or a need for a Proton override, and allow the game to complete any first-run shader processing before judging consistency.

Phasmophobia — a separate multiplayer case

Phasmophobia is the choice for co-operative ghost hunting, but it needs a different compatibility check. Microphone access, anti-cheat and online-service behavior can change independently of the game’s basic rendering. Search-result evidence identifies Steam Deck and Proton discussion, yet the cited coverage does not establish a stable official rating or a universally reliable configuration.

Check the current Steam page and recent ProtonDB reports immediately before buying. Confirm that voice input works with the headset or microphone you plan to use, and verify that the current anti-cheat and online-service implementation permits Deck play. If your group needs a dependable first-night experience with no compatibility experiment, choose one of the offline recommendations instead.

How to check a game before you install it

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page. Look for the current Deck compatibility label and expand the detailed notes. Read the note itself; the icon alone does not tell you whether a launcher, text-size adjustment or controller workaround is involved.
  2. Open the game’s ProtonDB report. Check the aggregate medal and sort your attention toward recent reports. Record the Proton version, SteamOS context, launch options and fixes that successful users actually mention.
  3. Separate launch success from playability. A report that says a game boots is not enough. Look for working controls, audio, video, save games and online features if those matter to you.
  4. Check for regressions. Proton releases and game patches can change outcomes. Proton 11 coverage illustrates why compatibility is time-sensitive: a Valve update can make a previously troublesome game more usable, while a new build can introduce a different issue.
  5. Install with a recovery plan. If the default configuration fails, you can test another Proton tool from the game’s Properties menu without reinstalling the game.

Forcing a Proton version in Steam

Steam Support documents a per-game compatibility-tool setting. Use it only when the default Proton choice is failing or a recent ProtonDB report identifies a version with a known fix.

  1. In your Steam Library, highlight the game.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Select Compatibility.
  4. Enable the option to force a specific Proton compatibility tool.
  5. Choose the version recommended by a recent ProtonDB report, then close Properties and launch the game.
  6. Test the same scene or feature that failed before changing anything else. This makes it possible to tell whether the override helped.

Do not assume the newest Proton version is always best for a particular title. A report tied to an older version may still be useful, but weigh it against newer reports and the date of the latest game patch. Remove the override and return to Steam’s default when it provides better results.

Diagnose the common failure modes

The game will not launch

  • Recheck the latest ProtonDB reports for a current launch option or known regression.
  • Try the Proton version identified by several recent successful reports through Properties → Compatibility.
  • Remove old launch options one at a time; an option copied from an outdated report can prevent a newer build from starting.
  • Confirm that the game’s store notes do not require a separate launcher or account step.

The game launches but controls are wrong

  • Check whether the report describes a controller layout requirement or keyboard-and-mouse prompt.
  • Test the built-in control layout before adding custom mappings.
  • For games that switch input modes in menus, reconnect the controller and retest after the title reaches its main menu.

Video, audio or cut-scenes fail

  • Compare your symptom with recent ProtonDB reports; video glitches are often version-specific.
  • Test the same scene after changing only the Proton tool, so you can identify whether the compatibility layer is involved.
  • For SOMA and other atmosphere-heavy games, test your intended headphones or speakers early; a rendering fix does not guarantee that an external audio path is working.

Performance feels inconsistent

  • Expect shader-compilation stutter to be reported separately from a game’s ability to launch.
  • Allow initial shader processing to finish, then retest the same area.
  • Check whether a newer Proton or game patch is associated with a change in the reports.
  • Do not substitute an invented FPS target for evidence. The cited coverage provides no single comparable FPS figure across these games.

Multiplayer or voice chat fails

  • Give Phasmophobia extra scrutiny because microphone, anti-cheat and online-service behavior can change independently.
  • Verify voice input in the game’s own settings and in a private session before inviting a group.
  • Read current reports for service or anti-cheat changes rather than relying on an old launch report.

A practical decision framework

  • Want the lowest-risk first purchase? Start with Resident Evil 2 (remake), whose Deck Verified and ProtonDB Platinum evidence is unusually strong.
  • Want stealth and a sustained campaign? Choose Alien: Isolation, then check its current reports for the configuration that matches your Deck software.
  • Want story and atmosphere with minimal combat emphasis? Choose SOMA and use headphones if that suits your play space.
  • Want pursuit and panic rather than combat? Choose Outlast or Outlast 2.
  • Want shooting and survival systems? Choose Dead Space, checking the original and remake as separate products.
  • Want to play with friends? Consider Phasmophobia only after confirming current voice, anti-cheat and online compatibility.

What to recheck on the day you buy

  1. Confirm the exact edition: Dead Space’s original and remake are not equivalent compatibility tests.
  2. Read the current Steam Deck label and detailed notes.
  3. Open the current ProtonDB report rather than relying on a cached recommendation.
  4. Note the Proton version and any launch option used by recent successful reports.
  5. For Phasmophobia, verify microphone and online-service status before scheduling a group session.

These checks matter because labels, reports, Proton releases, game patches, launchers, anti-cheat systems and retailer availability are all subject to change. The best-supported choice today can still require a different Proton tool after a future update.
