There is no single best printer for every home office. Choose a monochrome laser for frequent black-and-white documents, a color laser when you need crisp office documents in color, or an ink-tank all-in-one when you print color often and want to weigh lower refill costs. The Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw and Epson EcoTank ET-4950 are useful examples of those different priorities—not universal winners.
Start with what you print
Estimate your monthly volume and sort pages into three groups: black text, color office documents, and photos or other creative work. A printer suited to one mix can be a poor match for another. Consider scanning and copying too: batch jobs, two-sided originals, and frequent multifunction use affect which features matter.
- Mostly black text: Compare monochrome laser all-in-ones. You avoid paying for color hardware and supplies you do not need.
- Color documents plus office work: A color laser can be a fit when document clarity and speed matter more than photo detail.
- Frequent color pages: Compare ink-tank models and their refill costs, yields, and features.
- Photos: Do not assume an office-oriented color laser will match an inkjet. The reviewed Canon model produces less detailed photos than inkjet printers.
A representative reader question is “Best printer for home office use right now?” The useful answer depends on the work: documents, photos, scanning, volume, and ongoing ink or toner costs—not one headline specification. The question appears in a 2026 r/printers discussion, which is community phrasing rather than product-test evidence.

| Printer or category | Best fit | Evidence-backed details | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monochrome laser; Brother MFC-L2820DW as an example | Mostly black-and-white documents | RTINGS’ 2026 office guide lists up to 33 pages per minute for this model. | RTINGS notes that this model lacks duplex scanning. The figure is a stated maximum, not a head-to-head test result. Verify current features and regional availability. |
| Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw, color laser all-in-one | Document-heavy work that still needs color | RTINGS’ 2026 home-printer guide reports sharp documents, high page yields, a capable ADF, duplex scanning, and up to 26 pages per minute in color and black and white. | Its photo output is less detailed and clear than inkjet output. Actual throughput depends on settings and job type. |
| Epson EcoTank ET-4950 series, ink-tank all-in-one | Frequent color printing with scanning and other multifunction needs | TechRadar’s 2026 review lists printing, scanning, copying, faxing, duplex printing and scanning, and a 30-sheet ADF. It reports Epson’s estimate that included bottled ink can last around three years. | The ink-duration figure is a manufacturer estimate reported by the reviewer, not a guarantee. TechRadar notes no USB host port, NFC, Bluetooth, or multipurpose tray; in its comparison, the Canon MAXIFY GX4020 produced slightly more detailed photos. |
RTINGS describes the MF665Cdw as an excellent document printer for a home printer that also serves as an office printer, while noting that it is relatively large. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not proof that it is right for every buyer. See RTINGS’ home-printer guide, updated August 20, 2026, and its office-printer guide.

Calculate running cost, not just purchase price
Compare total ownership cost: the printer’s purchase price plus expected ink or toner purchases and maintenance. For original-equipment supplies, compare the price with the manufacturer-rated yield. Actual consumption can differ, so a per-page estimate is a planning aid, not a guaranteed cost.

A supply comparison sampled prices on September 5, 2026 and calculated per-page costs by dividing OEM supply prices by manufacturer-rated yields. Those prices are a dated sample, not a live retail quote. The evidence does not establish a universal cross-brand cost-per-page or lifetime-cost figure. Home Office Research’s printer comparison explains its model-specific approach.

Duplex printing and duplex scanning are separate capabilities. Automatic duplex printing handles both sides of a sheet; duplex scanning captures both sides of an original. An ADF can speed up batches, but its presence alone does not mean it scans both sides automatically. Check the exact model specification: for example, RTINGS reports duplex scanning on the MF665Cdw but says the MFC-L2820DW lacks it.
