The best work-from-home accessory is the one that fixes a specific fit problem. For most laptop users, that means a stand that raises the screen plus a separate keyboard and mouse. A monitor riser helps only when the existing screen is too low, a footrest is useful only when your feet cannot rest flat, and document holders or wrist rests depend on the task and your alignment. These tools can reduce awkward reaching and positioning, but no purchase guarantees a productivity increase—and OSHA notes that “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.”
Choose accessories by the problem they solve
Start with your body and workstation, not a shopping list. Sit in your normal working position for several minutes and identify the first point of discomfort: a laptop screen that forces you to bend your neck, a keyboard that leaves your elbows too far forward, feet that dangle after raising the chair, or printed pages that make you turn repeatedly. The accessory should correct that specific mismatch.
OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool and its Workstation Components guidance emphasize adjustability rather than a universal posture. Chair height, desk clearance, monitor position and the location of frequently used items all affect whether an accessory helps or creates a new reach.

| Workstation problem | Accessory to consider | When it is appropriate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen is low when the laptop is on the desk | Laptop stand, plus external keyboard and mouse | You use a laptop for extended desk work and need the display higher without raising the typing surface | Do not raise the laptop and continue typing on its elevated built-in keyboard for long sessions |
| Monitor is below a comfortable viewing height | Monitor stand or riser | The riser places the screen directly in front of you at a comfortable height and distance | A riser is unnecessary if the monitor already fits; height is personal and workspace-dependent |
| Feet cannot stay flat after adjusting the chair to the desk | Footrest or another sturdy support | The chair and desk cannot be adjusted enough for your feet to reach the floor comfortably | It is conditional, not a required part of every setup |
| You look down or sideways repeatedly to read paper references | Adjustable document holder | Printed material is a frequent part of the job and can be placed near the monitor | Placement must suit the monitor, keyboard and chair; it is not useful for every task |
| Wrists bend against the keyboard edge while you pause | Wrist or palm support | The support lets your hands move freely and helps you rest with a neutral wrist angle | It must match the keyboard edge; do not pin your wrists to it while typing |
Laptop stand, external keyboard and mouse: the most useful combination for desk work
A laptop combines the screen and input devices in one fixed unit. Raising the display to a comfortable viewing height also raises the keyboard, while placing the keyboard at a comfortable elbow height leaves the screen low. Separating those functions is why a laptop stand for desk use is often the first accessory to evaluate.

Mayo Clinic’s office ergonomics guide suggests considering a laptop stand with a separate keyboard and mouse. OSHA’s additional workstation guidance says that laptops used as primary computers for intensive keyboard work should have an auxiliary full-sized keyboard and a monitor; see Computer Workstations: Additional Information.
Set up the combination
- Place the stand so the laptop screen is directly in front of you rather than off to one side.
- Connect or position an external keyboard on the desk in front of the stand. Keep it close enough that your elbows stay near your sides and your forearms can remain aligned with your hands.
- Place the mouse beside the keyboard on the side you normally use. It should be close enough that you do not reach forward or outward for every movement.
- Adjust the chair and keyboard together. If the keyboard is too high, lower the chair only if your feet can still rest flat; otherwise plan for a footrest.
- Type for several minutes and check whether your shoulders stay relaxed, your wrists remain in line with your forearms, and you can see the screen without bending your neck.
A stand is not a reason to use the laptop’s built-in keyboard at a steep angle for a full workday. That arrangement solves the screen height problem by moving the input problem to your hands and shoulders. The independent keyboard and mouse are what make the screen adjustment practical.
What to look for when selecting a laptop stand
- Height range: It should allow the top of the display to sit at or slightly below eye level for your seated position, without forcing the keyboard surface to become your typing surface.
- Stability: The base must remain steady when you open the lid, adjust the display or type on the separate keyboard.
- Footprint: Leave enough desk depth for the keyboard, mouse and any documents you use frequently.
- Compatibility: Check that the stand supports the size and weight of your laptop and leaves room for its charging connection and ventilation openings.
- Adjustability: A fixed height can work if it fits your chair and desk; otherwise, adjustable height and tilt make it easier to adapt the setup.

An external monitor should sit directly in front of you, at a comfortable distance and height. OSHA’s monitor guidance recommends at least 20 inches of viewing distance and the top line of the screen at or below eye level; the recommendations are in Computer Workstations: Monitors. Mayo Clinic describes a 20- to 40-inch range and also places the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level in its ergonomics guide. Treat these as adjustment guidance rather than a pass/fail measurement: screen size, text scaling, eyesight and chair position change what feels comfortable.
Adjust the monitor before buying a riser
- Move the monitor directly in front of your chair so your head and torso do not stay rotated.
- Set the distance so you can read normal text without leaning forward. OSHA’s minimum is 20 inches; Mayo Clinic’s stated range is 20 to 40 inches.
- Raise or lower the display until the top line is at or slightly below eye level when you sit upright.
- Only if the monitor cannot reach that position should you add a stand or riser.
- After raising it, confirm that the keyboard and mouse remain close and that the riser has not consumed the desk space needed for them.
A tall riser can create a new problem if it pushes the screen too high or leaves the keyboard too far away. A lower platform, an adjustable monitor arm or no accessory at all may be the better fit. The useful question is not “Which riser is best?” but “What height and distance does this monitor need at my desk?”

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Footrests: a solution for feet that cannot reach the floor
A footrest is appropriate when you raise the chair to fit the desk and your feet no longer rest flat. OSHA’s evaluation checklist links footrests to situations in which workstation adjustability is insufficient; review the checklist at Computer Workstations: Evaluation Checklist. Mayo Clinic likewise describes a sturdy stool or a stack of sturdy books as alternatives, so a dedicated product is not essential.
Decide whether you need one
- Adjust the chair so your elbows and forearms can reach the keyboard without lifting your shoulders.
- Check both feet. If they rest flat and your knees and hips feel supported, a footrest is not solving a current problem.
- If your feet dangle, slide forward or you brace your toes against the floor, add a stable support under both feet.
- Use a support broad enough for your normal foot position and sturdy enough not to slide when you change posture.
- Recheck keyboard height after adding it; the goal is a balanced position, not a fixed pose.
Do not use a footrest to compensate for a desk that is so high that your shoulders remain raised. Correct the largest mismatch first—usually chair or desk height—then use the footrest for the remaining gap.
Document holders for print-heavy work
If you frequently transcribe, compare or reference printed pages, a stable adjustable document holder can reduce repeated head and neck movements. OSHA’s Document Holders guidance says placement should account for the monitor, keyboard and chair. When the screen is your main focus, position the holder at a similar height and distance to the monitor so your eyes do not travel between widely separated targets.
Place the holder around the task
- Put the holder close to the monitor rather than beside the desk.
- Align its height with the portion of the screen you look at most often.
- Keep it far enough away that the page is readable without leaning forward.
- Leave clearance for the keyboard and mouse; a document holder that forces the input devices toward the desk edge creates another reach.
- Remove it when the task changes. A holder takes up space and offers little value for work that rarely uses paper.
Wrist and palm supports are optional, not typing platforms
A wrist or palm rest can help facilitate a neutral wrist angle when it is correctly matched to the keyboard and workstation. OSHA’s Wrist/Palm Supports guidance says your hands should move freely and remain elevated above the support while typing; the pad contacts the heel or palm when you are resting, not as a brace that pins the wrists in place.
Fit the support to the keyboard
- Align the support with the front edge of the keyboard so there is no abrupt height step.
- Check that your wrists and forearms form a straight line while you type.
- Let your hands hover over the keys during active typing and use the support only during pauses.
- If the support makes your wrists bend upward, remove it and adjust the keyboard height instead.
- Reassess after changing keyboards; a support designed for a low-profile board may not fit a taller one.
Some people prefer no pad at all. OSHA’s Purchasing Guide treats this category as a fit decision, not a required purchase.

Desk organization and chair adjustments come before add-ons
Accessories work only when the underlying workstation leaves room for them. OSHA’s guidance on desks and workstation components emphasizes adequate clearance, component placement and keeping frequently used items in front of you and within easy reach. A well-adjusted chair supports your back, legs, buttocks and arms.
- Clear the area directly in front of you before adding a riser or stand.
- Keep the keyboard and mouse close enough that your elbows do not drift forward.
- Move the phone, notebook and other frequent tools into the easy-reach zone instead of stretching for them.
- Check that chair arms, desk edges or cable bundles do not block your legs or force your torso to twist.
- Make one change at a time, then work long enough to notice whether the change helped.
Many apparent accessory problems are placement problems. A mouse that is too far away can cause more shoulder reaching even if the mouse itself is comfortable; a monitor riser can make the screen too high if the chair was not adjusted first.
A complete workstation setup sequence
Use this order when building or resetting a home workstation. It prevents one accessory from masking a larger mismatch.
- Define the main task. Decide whether you spend most of the session typing on a laptop, viewing an external monitor, reading paper or switching among all three. Accessories should follow that task.
- Set the chair. Adjust the seat so your back, legs and arms feel supported and you can approach the desk without hunching. Keep both feet flat if the desk and chair allow it.
- Place the primary screen. Center the laptop or monitor directly in front of you. For an external monitor, use OSHA’s at-least-20-inch distance guidance and Mayo Clinic’s 20- to 40-inch range as starting points, then adjust for readable text and comfort.
- Separate laptop functions when necessary. If the laptop screen needs to rise, place it on a stand and add a separate keyboard and mouse rather than typing on the elevated built-in keyboard.
- Set input devices. Keep the keyboard and mouse close, with forearms and wrists aligned. Make sure the desk edge does not press into your arms.
- Solve the foot position. If raising the chair leaves your feet unsupported, add a stable footrest or another sturdy support.
- Add task-specific supports. Place a document holder only for frequent paper work. Add a wrist or palm rest only if it preserves neutral alignment and free hand movement.
- Run a short check. Type, read and use the mouse for several minutes. Look for new reaching, shoulder lifting, neck bending or wrist angles. Move or remove the accessory that caused the issue.
How to compare accessories without being misled by labels
Product names such as “ergonomic,” “office,” or “productivity” do not prove that an item will fit your desk. Compare the characteristics that affect your particular problem.
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Adjustability and fit | Does the height, angle or position cover the range your chair, desk and screen require? |
| Stability | Will the stand, riser, holder or footrest stay in place during normal typing, reading and repositioning? |
| Device compatibility | Does it support the dimensions and connections of your laptop, monitor, keyboard or mouse? |
| Desk footprint | After installation, is there still room for your keyboard, mouse, documents and comfortable forearm placement? |
| Task match | Will you use it for the majority of your work, or is it solving an occasional situation better handled another way? |
| Cost and return policy | Is the price justified by a measurable fit improvement, and can you return it if the adjustment range is wrong? |

Common setup failures and fixes
Your neck still bends forward after adding a laptop stand
Check text size and viewing distance before adding more height. Move the laptop directly in front of you, sit back in the chair and raise the display only until the top line is at or slightly below eye level. If the keyboard is now too high, use the separate keyboard and mouse rather than raising the chair indefinitely.
Your shoulders feel tense after moving the keyboard
The keyboard or mouse may be too far away, or the chair may be too low for the desk. Bring both devices toward you, keep elbows near your sides and adjust chair height while preserving foot support. A wrist rest will not correct a reach that starts at the shoulder.
Your feet dangle after you find a comfortable keyboard height
Use a footrest or sturdy stool so both feet have stable support. Mayo Clinic specifically notes that a sturdy stool or stack of sturdy books can serve this purpose. If the desk allows, lowering the chair may remove the need for a separate support.
The monitor riser makes the screen feel too high
Remove the riser and test the original position. A monitor belongs directly in front of you with the top at or below eye level; a riser is useful only when it helps achieve that position. Recheck chair height and viewing distance before choosing a different riser.
A wrist support makes typing harder
Move it flush with the keyboard edge or stop using it. Your hands should move freely and stay elevated above the support during typing. If your wrists are still bent, change keyboard height or chair position instead of adding padding.

You keep turning toward paper documents
Move a document holder beside or near the monitor and match its height and distance to the screen you watch most. If paper is only occasional, clear desk space may be more useful than a permanent holder.
Practical setups for common home-office arrangements
Laptop-only desk
Start with a laptop stand, external keyboard and mouse. Center the screen, reserve desk depth for the input devices and use a footrest only if chair height leaves your feet unsupported. This is the arrangement in which separating screen and keyboard height usually addresses the largest mismatch.
Laptop with an external monitor
Choose one display as the primary screen and center it. Put the second screen where you can glance at it without keeping your neck rotated. A riser is justified only if either display is too low; the laptop may need its own stand if you use it as a screen while typing on the external keyboard.

Set the monitor and keyboard first, then add an adjustable document holder near the monitor. Keep pages close enough to read without leaning and leave the mouse within easy reach. A wrist support remains optional and should not reduce hand movement.
Shared desk or changing work locations
Favor lightweight, adjustable accessories that can be repositioned quickly, but verify stability each time. Recreate the chair, screen, keyboard, mouse and foot-support sequence rather than assuming the same height works at every desk.
What these accessories can—and cannot—promise
The cited OSHA and Mayo Clinic guidance supports better fit, neutral alignment, comfortable viewing distance and reduced awkward reaching. It does not establish that buying an accessory by itself produces a measured productivity percentage or a universal comfort result. Productivity also depends on the task, software, breaks, workload and the person using the workstation.
Use comfort and fit as your test: can you see the screen without bending your neck, reach the keyboard and mouse without shoulder strain, keep wrists aligned, and support your feet? If an accessory does not improve one of those conditions, it is not earning space on the desk. Recheck the arrangement when your chair, monitor, laptop, tasks or work location changes.
