Short answer: For a home that uses compatible cable broadband, start with a DOCSIS 3.1 modem-router combo and verify the exact model against your ISP’s approved-device list and speed tier before buying. The NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S is a sensible midrange candidate with Wi‑Fi 6, dual-band AX2700 wireless and four Gigabit LAN ports; the Nighthawk CAX80 targets households that want a higher advertised wireless capacity. The ARRIS SURFboard G54 appeared as the top recommendation in an independent 2026 roundup, but that page’s testing details and full specifications were not available for verification. None of these cable devices is a universal solution for fiber or DSL service.
What a modem-router combo does
A modem-router combo, sometimes called a gateway, puts two jobs in one enclosure. The cable modem converts the signal on a coaxial cable into an internet connection, while the router creates your home network, assigns local IP addresses and provides Wi‑Fi. One box means one power supply, fewer cables and a single management interface.
That convenience also removes some flexibility. With separate equipment, you can replace the router without changing the modem, select a different Wi‑Fi system or keep a modem that your ISP has already approved. A combo ties those choices together, so compatibility and long-term upgrade plans matter more than a headline wireless number.

Connection type comes first
The products discussed here are cable gateways. They connect to a coaxial cable service that uses DOCSIS. A fiber installation normally uses an optical network terminal (ONT) or an ISP-provided fiber gateway, and DSL uses a telephone-line modem. A cable DOCSIS gateway cannot replace those devices. Confirm whether your service is cable, fiber or DSL before comparing Wi‑Fi specifications.

Compatibility is the first buying test
An attractive specification is irrelevant if the ISP will not provision the device. Approval is model-specific and often tier-specific: a provider may accept one hardware revision or speed tier while rejecting another. NETGEAR describes certified devices as tested and guaranteed by the relevant ISP, and its CAX30S guidance directs buyers to check the provider’s exact speed-tier compatibility.
- Identify your access technology. Check a bill, installation document or the wall outlet. Coaxial cable points to cable DOCSIS; an optical terminal or fiber jack points to fiber; a telephone-style DSL jack points to DSL.
- Write down the subscribed tier. Record the advertised download and upload rates, whether the plan is symmetrical, and whether the account includes managed voice service.
- Open the ISP’s current approved-device list. Search by the complete model number, not just the product family. Look for the exact hardware revision if the provider lists one.
- Check service exclusions. The cited NETGEAR gateways support major U.S. cable providers but exclude fiber and bundled cable voice service. If your plan includes a phone line, ask the ISP whether a customer-owned gateway is supported or whether its voice eMTA must remain in place.
- Confirm activation requirements. Some providers require the modem’s DOCSIS MAC address or serial number before service starts. Ask whether self-activation is available and whether a technician visit is required.
Certification is stronger evidence than a manufacturer’s generic “compatible with” statement. ISP lists can change, so recheck immediately before purchase and again if you change plans.

How the main candidates fit different homes
NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S: a balanced cable gateway
The CAX30S combines a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with Wi‑Fi 6. Its dual-band AX2700 label describes the manufacturer’s aggregate wireless class, and four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports make it straightforward to connect televisions, desktop computers, game consoles or a wired access point. NETGEAR quotes wireless connectivity of up to 2.7 Gbps and states that no separate modem is required.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse that figure as a product-class description, not as a promise that a 2.7 Gbps internet plan will reach a phone or laptop. Real throughput depends on the subscribed tier, the client’s Wi‑Fi capability, channel congestion, distance, walls and whether traffic is on the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band. The CAX30S is best considered when its exact hardware version is approved for your cable provider and your wired devices do not require multigigabit Ethernet.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80: more advertised wireless headroom
The CAX80 is also a DOCSIS 3.1 modem-router with Wi‑Fi 6. NETGEAR advertises up to 6 Gbps of combined Wi‑Fi capability. That larger aggregate number can be useful when many compatible clients are active at once, but it does not increase the rate purchased from the ISP and does not establish larger coverage in every floor plan.
Choose it only after confirming the provider’s approval and the ports you need. The available evidence does not establish a complete port list, measured range or independent speed result, so inspect the current manufacturer specifications and your ISP list before treating the CAX80 as an upgrade over the CAX30S.
ARRIS SURFboard G54: a recommendation that still needs verification
A 2026 independent roundup surfaced the G54 as its top modem-router recommendation. Because the page itself was not accessible, its test method, scoring, firmware version, wireless configuration and ISP-compatibility details cannot be confirmed here. Treat the result as a lead for further checking rather than proof that the G54 is the best choice for every household.

Motorola MB8611: when a separate router is preferable
The MB8611 illustrates the separate-modem approach. It is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, but it does not provide Wi‑Fi. You pair it with a router or mesh system that matches your coverage, security and wired-port requirements.
This arrangement takes more space and requires two devices, yet it lets you replace the router when wireless standards change while leaving the approved modem in place. It is also useful when you need a specific mesh platform, multiple multigigabit LAN ports or advanced routing features that an all-in-one gateway does not offer.
Compare candidates in the right order
1. ISP approval and speed tier
Start with the provider’s list and the exact tier. A DOCSIS 3.1 label alone does not guarantee acceptance, and a gateway approved for a lower plan may not be listed for a faster one. Record the approval date or list version if the ISP provides one so you can resolve disputes during activation.

Eliminate devices built for the wrong access technology. Cable gateways use coax and DOCSIS; fiber and DSL require different termination hardware. - Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. DOCSIS and Ethernet capacity
DOCSIS 3.1 is the relevant capability for the cited gateways, but the modem’s practical value also depends on its Ethernet handoff. A Gigabit LAN port can become the bottleneck for a plan above 1 Gbps or for fast local transfers. The MB8611’s 2.5 Gigabit port demonstrates why wired interfaces deserve a separate check.
4. Wi‑Fi generation, bands and clients
Wi‑Fi 6 can serve newer phones, computers and streaming devices efficiently, while older clients continue to connect using earlier standards. Dual-band equipment generally provides 2.4 GHz for longer reach and 5 GHz for higher local rates, but walls and interference still determine results. Count your simultaneous clients and identify any devices that support only 2.4 GHz before selecting a gateway.
5. Voice, mesh and expansion needs
Bundled cable voice can require an ISP-managed voice modem, and the cited NETGEAR products exclude that service. A large or multistory home may need wired access points or a mesh system; verify whether the gateway supports the expansion method you intend to use. If you expect to change routers frequently, separate equipment usually preserves more choice.
6. Support, firmware and availability
Check the manufacturer’s support period, firmware-update process, warranty terms and current stock after the technical checks above. Street prices and inventory change, so a price seen on one date should not be treated as a permanent value comparison. Prefer a model with a documented update path and an easy way to restore settings after a failed update.

What advertised Wi‑Fi speeds do—and do not—mean
AX2700 and “up to 6 Gbps” are aggregate wireless-class figures. They combine theoretical link rates across bands under ideal conditions; they are not the speed of one device, the capacity of your internet plan or a coverage guarantee. Protocol overhead, radio interference, client antennas and distance reduce usable throughput.
Your internet test is limited by the slowest relevant link: the ISP tier, the modem’s DOCSIS and Ethernet capabilities, the router’s wireless link and the client device. A wired test from a modern computer connected directly to a Gigabit port can help separate an ISP problem from a Wi‑Fi problem. Run tests at different times and locations, and compare them with the rate promised by the plan rather than with the gateway’s aggregate label.
Installation and activation procedure
- Prepare the account. Have the account number, service address and the gateway’s MAC address and serial number available. Ask the ISP whether customer-owned equipment is permitted on your tier.
- Disconnect the old modem. Unplug its power and remove the coaxial cable. Leave the router disconnected until the new gateway has synchronized.
- Connect the coaxial line. Hand-tighten the coax connector to the gateway’s cable input. Avoid damaged splitters; if a splitter is required for television service, use one rated for the provider’s frequencies.
- Power the gateway. Use the supplied power adapter and wait for the downstream, upstream and online indicators to settle. Initial channel acquisition can take several minutes.
- Complete ISP activation. Connect a computer by Ethernet or the gateway’s default Wi‑Fi, open the provider’s activation page if redirected, and enter the requested account and device details. If activation fails, call support and give the exact model and MAC address.
- Change administration credentials. Sign in to the gateway’s management page using the setup instructions, replace the default administrator password and set a unique Wi‑Fi name and passphrase. Do not reuse your email or banking password.
- Update firmware. Check the administration interface for the latest stable firmware, install it while the gateway is on uninterrupted power and wait for the automatic reboot.
- Reconnect devices deliberately. Join important stationary devices by Ethernet where practical. Put older or distant clients on the appropriate band, then test the rooms where people actually work, stream or play.
Troubleshooting common failures
The ISP will not activate the gateway
- Recheck the exact model number and hardware revision against the provider list.
- Confirm that the subscription is cable service and that the gateway is approved for the current tier.
- Read the MAC address from the gateway label or status page; a single transposed character prevents provisioning.
- Ask whether a bundled voice line requires an ISP-supplied voice device.
The online indicator never becomes steady
- Inspect both ends of the coax cable and remove unnecessary splitters.
- Power-cycle the gateway once, then allow several minutes for channel ranging.
- Contact the ISP to check for an area outage or a signal-level problem. Replacing the router cannot fix a damaged outside line.
Ethernet is fast but Wi‑Fi is slow
- Test close to the gateway with a client that supports Wi‑Fi 6, then repeat at the normal working location.
- Move high-bandwidth stationary equipment to Ethernet where possible.
- Place the gateway in an open, central position, away from metal cabinets, cordless-phone bases and other radios.
- Separate congested 2.4 GHz devices from 5 GHz-capable clients and use the gateway’s automatic channel selection if available.
Only one room has poor coverage
Do not assume a higher aggregate speed will solve a wall or floor obstruction. First relocate the gateway or run Ethernet to an access point. If cabling is impractical, use a compatible mesh or extender system and place its satellite where it still receives a strong signal from the gateway, not inside the dead zone.

When to choose a combo versus separate equipment
| Choose a combo when… | Choose separate modem and router when… |
|---|---|
| You want one device, one power supply and simpler setup. | You expect to upgrade Wi‑Fi independently of the modem. |
| Your ISP approves the exact gateway for your tier and does not require managed voice hardware. | You need a specific mesh platform, advanced routing controls or more wired ports. |
| Your home is covered adequately from one central location. | Your home needs wired access points, multiple floors or multigigabit LAN connections. |
| You prefer fewer settings and a single support contact. | You are comfortable managing two devices and want to avoid replacing both at once. |
Practical recommendations by household
- Typical cable plan up to the Gigabit class: Consider the CAX30S if the ISP lists it for your tier and four Gigabit LAN ports meet your wired needs. Treat its 2.7 Gbps label as aggregate Wi‑Fi capacity.
- Many Wi‑Fi 6 clients: Investigate the CAX80 after confirming approval, required ports and current firmware support. Its advertised 6 Gbps aggregate figure does not guarantee faster service or wider coverage.
- Voice bundle or uncertain provider policy: Ask the ISP whether customer-owned gateways are permitted. You may need the provider’s voice-capable equipment even if a separate router is allowed.
- Frequent wireless upgrades or advanced networking: Use an approved DOCSIS 3.1 modem such as the MB8611 with a router selected for your coverage and feature requirements.
- Fiber or DSL household: Do not buy a cable DOCSIS combo. Select equipment specified for the fiber or DSL service, or place your own router behind the provider’s ONT or modem when supported.
Keeping the gateway reliable
Leave ventilation space around the unit, keep firmware current and save a backup of working settings before major changes. Label the coax, Ethernet and power cables so a future support call is quicker. If you change ISP tiers, repeat the approval check; the same hardware can have different eligibility on a new plan. When replacing equipment, securely erase saved Wi‑Fi credentials and return leased hardware according to the provider’s instructions.
