“Air printer” usually means a printer that supports Apple AirPrint, not a separate kind of printer. For a home office that prints documents in color and scans paperwork, RTINGS’ September 2026 guide names the Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw its leading tested AirPrint pick. Households that print color regularly and want to reduce ongoing ink costs should also consider the Epson EcoTank ET-2980; for occasional black-and-white pages, a monochrome laser such as the Brother HL-L2460DW may be a better fit.
The right choice depends on what you print, how often you print, and whether you need scanning or photo output. Confirm AirPrint support for the exact model sold in your region before buying: wireless connectivity alone does not guarantee compatibility.
What AirPrint does—and how to check compatibility
AirPrint is Apple’s driverless printing feature. Apple says a supported printer can print from an Apple device without installing additional drivers or software. Its setup guidance is to connect the printer to Wi-Fi, connect the Apple device to the same network, then select the printer in the app’s print dialog. - Look up the printer’s exact brand and model in Apple’s AirPrint compatibility information.
- Connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network, following its setup instructions.
- Connect the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro to that same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the document or image, choose the app’s print command, and select the printer.
Do not assume that every wireless printer—or every printer from a manufacturer with AirPrint models—supports the feature. Check the exact regional model designation.

These are recommendations reported by RTINGS and TechRadar, not products tested for this article. RTINGS describes its own standardized testing and says it has tested more than 170 printers since 2020; that figure describes RTINGS’ testing history, not the printer market.
How to compare printers before buying
Match the printer to how often you print
For frequent printing, compare high-yield toner or refillable ink with the household’s expected volume. For long stretches without printing, consider a laser model: the cited RTINGS guide warns that inkjet nozzles can clog when the printer sits unused. This is a tradeoff, not a guarantee that every idle inkjet will clog.

Choose for documents or photos
Laser printers are generally the document-focused option in this shortlist. For stronger photo output, consider a suitable inkjet instead: RTINGS reports that the MF665Cdw’s photos are weaker and grainier than those from inkjets.

Include the printer’s purchase price, the correct regional replacement ink or toner, expected supply yield, and how much the household prints. TechRadar notes that cartridges can cost more over time, while refillable tanks can reduce ongoing ink expense. Those general tradeoffs do not establish a model-specific cost per page or a guaranteed saving, so check current consumable pricing for the exact model.

Check the whole paper workflow
Decide whether you need print-only or print/scan/copy/fax functions, a flatbed or an ADF, automatic duplex printing, and duplex scanning. An ADF is useful for multipage paperwork because it feeds pages automatically. The Epson EcoTank ET-2980 lacks one; the Canon MF665Cdw includes an ADF with duplex scanning.
Confirm the connection you actually need
AirPrint printing uses Wi-Fi, with the Apple device and printer on the same network. If you also want a wired connection, check whether the specific model offers USB or Ethernet; the Canon MF665Cdw lists both.
