There is no single best Hogwarts Legacy preset for every PC. As of October 17, 2026, DLSS 5 has been announced for November 5 but is not yet available. Use your monitor’s native resolution, start from the official Hogwarts Legacy quality tier closest to your GPU, establish a ray-tracing-off baseline, then tune ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and frame generation one change at a time.
This approach improves the odds of a clear, stable image without treating vendor frame-rate claims as a guarantee for your hardware.
Is DLSS 5 available in Hogwarts Legacy?
Not yet at the time covered by this guide. NVIDIA’s current GeForce newsroom announcement says, “NVIDIA DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is coming to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5th, for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark.” Read the announcement at NVIDIA GeForce News.

An earlier NVIDIA newsroom article described the wider DLSS 5 rollout using a broader fall 2026 window; the newer dated announcement is the more specific schedule. You should check the game update notes and the NVIDIA announcement after November 5 before assuming the patch has reached your platform.

The forthcoming update is separate from features the PC game already supports. NVIDIA says Hogwarts Legacy already supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction on GeForce RTX PCs and laptops. The announced update adds DLSS Neural Rendering and upgrades the other DLSS technologies. Do not enable a menu option labeled DLSS 5 before the update is installed, and do not assume that RTX 50 hardware is required for the game’s existing resolution, ray-tracing or upscaling controls.
What “best settings” can realistically mean
The official sources do not provide an independent, controlled benchmark that tests every Hogwarts Legacy setting on every GPU and resolution. They also do not establish one universal preset that is simultaneously optimal for image quality, frame rate and responsiveness. A useful recommendation therefore has to be a repeatable method rather than a made-up number.
Decide which result matters most to you before changing options:
- Image quality: preserve fine geometry, stable reflections and clean motion at your monitor’s native resolution.
- Displayed frame rate: use supported frame-generation features after the underlying render is acceptable.
- Responsiveness and frame pacing: compare the game with frame generation disabled as well as enabled.
- Ray-tracing fidelity: keep ray-traced effects and increase their quality or geometry distance only while the game remains comfortable to play.
These goals can conflict. Multi Frame Generation can raise the displayed frame rate, but that does not mean the underlying render workload has improved by the same multiplier. The right choice depends on your GPU, resolution, monitor and tolerance for image artifacts or changes in responsiveness.
Official Hogwarts Legacy PC targets
The game’s published specifications are useful starting points, not measurements of DLSS 5. The official Hogwarts Legacy PC specifications list these targets:
| Quality tier | Listed graphics hardware | Memory | Target resolution and frame rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum / low | GeForce GTX 960 4 GB or Radeon RX 470 4 GB | 16 GB RAM | 720p at 30 fps, low quality |
| Recommended / high | GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 | 16 GB RAM | 1080p at 60 fps, high quality |
| Ultra | GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800 XT | 32 GB RAM | 1440p at 60 fps, ultra quality |
| Ultra 4K | GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT | 32 GB RAM | 2160p at 60 fps, ultra quality |
Steam’s listing also identifies the GTX 960 4 GB or RX 470 4 GB as the minimum graphics hardware, calls for 16 GB of RAM, and lists 85 GB of storage. See the Hogwarts Legacy Steam page for that listing.
Use the row closest to your system as a starting point. A card that falls between rows may need a lower resolution target, reduced ray tracing or a less aggressive quality mode. The table does not promise a specific result in every location, save file or camera movement.

A reliable tuning workflow
1. Confirm the display and installation basics
- Set the game to your monitor’s native resolution instead of relying on an arbitrary lower output resolution. This gives every DLSS comparison the same display target.
- Install the latest game update available for your platform and the current graphics driver that supports your GPU. DLSS 5 itself remains unavailable until its announced update is released.
- Close overlays or background applications that make frame-time comparisons inconsistent. Keep the same display mode, refresh rate and in-game location during each comparison.
2. Choose the closest official quality tier
Use the official target table as a capability check. Select the quality level nearest your GPU and resolution, then leave the other options at that tier long enough to establish a baseline. If the system is below the minimum specification, software settings cannot turn it into a supported configuration.
3. Establish a ray-tracing-off baseline
Begin with ray tracing disabled. Record how the game feels while walking through the same demanding area, rotating the camera and entering a scene with reflective surfaces. This baseline separates the cost of ray-traced effects from the cost of resolution and upscaling.
4. Add ray tracing gradually
If the baseline is acceptable, enable ray tracing and compare the same route again. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 coverage says the game update exposed quality and geometry-distance controls for ray-traced effects and improved ray-traced reflection detail, including reflections on water such as the Black Lake. Those controls let you trade visual range and precision against GPU load without changing the rest of the preset.
5. Select a DLSS Super Resolution mode
On supported GeForce RTX hardware, compare the available DLSS Super Resolution modes at the same output resolution. Start with the mode that gives the clearest fine detail, then move toward a more performance-oriented mode only if the frame-time result is insufficient. Inspect distant foliage, thin objects, moving characters and reflective surfaces rather than judging a static wall.
6. Add Ray Reconstruction when ray tracing is active
Use Ray Reconstruction with ray-traced effects where the option is available. Compare reflections, shadows and moving detail for stability. If a particular scene looks less consistent, keep notes and compare the same scene with Ray Reconstruction off; the sources do not establish one mode as universally superior on every system.
7. Test Multi Frame Generation separately
After the underlying image and frame pacing are acceptable, test DLSS Multi Frame Generation if your hardware and game build expose it. Treat the result as a displayed-frame-rate option, not proof that the GPU is rendering the same number of additional native frames. Compare camera movement, controls and frame pacing with the feature disabled before deciding whether the visual smoothness is worth using.
8. Change one variable at a time
Do not alter resolution, ray-tracing quality, geometry distance and upscaling mode simultaneously. Change one setting, repeat the same camera movement, and keep the option only if the improvement matches your priority. This makes it possible to undo a change when a scene becomes noisy, soft or uneven.

Ray-tracing settings: where to spend or save GPU time
Ray tracing is the first major branch in the tuning process. With it disabled, you have a performance reference that is easier to reproduce. With it enabled, use the game’s documented quality and geometry-distance controls to decide how much of the world receives the more expensive treatment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When image quality is the priority
- Keep ray tracing enabled after the baseline proves comfortable.
- Use a higher ray-traced quality level before increasing geometry distance; this preserves the appearance of the effect in the area being rendered.
- Increase geometry distance only when reflections or other ray-traced details disappearing at range is more distracting than the additional GPU load.
- Pay particular attention to water and the Black Lake, because NVIDIA specifically identifies improved ray-traced water reflections in its update coverage.
When consistent performance is the priority
- Reduce geometry distance first if distant ray-traced detail is not important to you.
- Lower ray-traced quality or turn ray tracing off if frame pacing remains uneven after upscaling adjustments.
- Do not use frame generation to mask a render path that already feels sluggish; compare the non-generated result first.
NVIDIA does not publish a per-setting frame-rate table for these controls, so any exact gain depends on the GPU, resolution and scene.
DLSS choices by goal
| Your priority | Starting approach | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum clarity | Native output resolution, the clearest available DLSS Super Resolution mode, and Ray Reconstruction with ray tracing | Fine geometry, distant foliage, reflections and motion stability |
| Balanced quality and speed | Keep the official quality tier, choose a middle DLSS Super Resolution mode, then tune ray-tracing quality | Whether softness is visible during camera movement and whether frame pacing stays even |
| Maximum displayed FPS | Use a performance-oriented DLSS mode only after reducing the underlying render cost, then test Multi Frame Generation if supported | Input feel, artifacts, pacing and whether the base render remains responsive |
| Ray-tracing showcase | Start from the ray-tracing-off baseline, enable ray tracing, use Ray Reconstruction and adjust quality or geometry distance | Reflections, water and distant ray-traced detail in the same repeatable scene |
The labels and available modes can vary with GPU support and game version. If DLSS 5 options appear after the November update, document which mode is being used rather than treating every DLSS feature as interchangeable.
Resolution-specific starting guidance
720p-class systems
The official minimum target is a 720p, 30-fps low-quality configuration. At this level, prioritize a stable frame time over ray tracing. Use the lowest-cost supported rendering path first, then raise quality only if the game remains smooth in demanding areas.
1080p systems
The official high-quality target is 1080p at 60 fps. Start with ray tracing off, select the clearest DLSS mode that meets your performance requirement, and add ray tracing only after the baseline is comfortable.

1440p systems
The official ultra target is 1440p at 60 fps with 32 GB of RAM. At this output resolution, reflections and fine geometry make image-quality comparisons easier to see. Use the quality and geometry-distance controls to keep ray tracing within your frame-time budget.
4K systems
The official ultra 4K target is 2160p at 60 fps on the listed high-end hardware. Begin with the native 4K display target and the clearest suitable upscaling mode. If performance is insufficient, adjust one DLSS or ray-tracing variable at a time rather than dropping several quality settings together.

How to compare settings without misleading yourself
- Pick one repeatable scene. Use the same location, weather state and approximate camera direction for every comparison. A reflective area is useful when evaluating ray tracing.
- Keep resolution fixed. Changing output resolution at the same time as DLSS mode makes image-quality conclusions unreliable.
- Move the camera. Walk, rotate and pass objects at different distances. Static screenshots can hide shimmer, softness or frame-pacing problems.
- Observe frame pacing, not only the counter. A higher displayed number is not automatically a smoother or more responsive experience, especially with frame generation.
- Write down each change. Record ray-tracing state, quality, geometry distance, DLSS mode, Ray Reconstruction state and Multi Frame Generation state.
- Keep the winner for your priority. Choose the clearest stable image, the most responsive result or the highest displayed rate according to the goal you selected before testing.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely setting to revisit | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The image looks soft at native monitor resolution | DLSS Super Resolution mode | Move toward a quality-oriented mode and inspect moving detail before changing ray tracing. |
| Reflections or water look unstable | Ray tracing and Ray Reconstruction | Compare Ray Reconstruction on and off in the same reflective scene; then adjust ray-traced quality. |
| Distant ray-traced detail disappears | Geometry distance | Increase the geometry-distance control if the added GPU load is acceptable. |
| Frame rate is high but controls feel less responsive | Multi Frame Generation | Disable frame generation and compare the underlying render and input feel. |
| Performance varies sharply between locations | Ray-tracing load or scene complexity | Repeat the test in a demanding area, lower ray-traced quality or geometry distance, and keep resolution fixed. |
| You cannot find DLSS 5 | Game version or release timing | As of October 17, 2026, the feature is announced for November 5, not established as available. Check for the post-release game update. |
What NVIDIA’s performance numbers do—and do not—tell you
NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 announcement reports that DLSS Multi Frame Generation, used with DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, multiplies frame rates by 4X on average on GeForce RTX 50 Series compared with its traditional-rendering baseline. The same announcement reports up to 210 fps with ray tracing and maxed settings, alongside a stated 110-fps CPU bottleneck. These are NVIDIA’s results under its own test conditions, not an independent Hogwarts Legacy benchmark or a guarantee for your PC. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 announcement.
Those figures are useful for understanding why frame generation exists, but they should not be copied into a personal settings recommendation. Your processor, graphics card, memory, resolution, driver, game area and monitor all affect the result. Use the repeatable comparison method above instead of targeting a vendor number.

NVIDIA describes the Hogwarts Legacy integration as using DLSS 5 SDK controls that Avalanche Software tuned to maintain the game’s artistic intent and style. That is the vendor’s description of the integration, not an independent image-quality assessment. The announced support list names GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark.
When the update is available, verify three things before retuning:
- Whether the new Neural Rendering option appears in the game’s graphics menu.
- Which GPU and platform combinations expose the option locally, through GeForce NOW or through RTX Spark.
- Whether your existing DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation settings were preserved or reset by the update.
Retest from a known baseline after any major patch. A new rendering model can change the appearance of fine detail even when the resolution and quality labels look unchanged.
Recommended decision path
- Match your GPU and RAM to the closest official Hogwarts Legacy tier.
- Use native display resolution and establish a ray-tracing-off baseline.
- Select the clearest DLSS Super Resolution mode that meets your frame-time goal.
- Enable Ray Reconstruction when ray tracing is active, then compare reflections and motion.
- Adjust ray-traced quality and geometry distance one at a time.
- Test Multi Frame Generation separately and keep it only if responsiveness and pacing suit you.
- After November 5, check the game build before expecting DLSS 5 or Neural Rendering controls.
This is the most defensible way to get the best Hogwarts Legacy image and performance balance from the hardware you own: use the official targets as boundaries, measure your own repeatable scene, and treat DLSS 5 as an announced update until it is actually installed.
