The best squad setup in Last War: Survival starts with roles, not a memorized hero list: place two durable Defense heroes in the front row and three Attack or Support heroes behind them. If you have five well-developed heroes of one troop type, a mono-type squad is the strongest general-purpose starting point because community guides report its largest composition bonus. Do not force that bonus with weak or unfinished heroes; your roster, the activity, and the opponent can make a mixed squad more effective.
How a Last War squad is laid out
Every squad contains five heroes. The formation has two front positions and three back positions, as described by Last War Vault in its March 11, 2026 guide. Treat those positions as a survival-and-damage system: the front row absorbs pressure while the back row supplies most of the damage and support.
Front row: two Defense heroes
Put your most durable Defense-class heroes in the two forward slots. These heroes are the squad’s first line of protection, so prioritize durability, defensive skills, and enough development to remain alive through the encounter. A high-rarity hero who dies immediately is less useful than a slightly less rare Defense hero with substantially better levels, gear, skills, or exclusive-weapon progress.

Use the three rear positions for Attack and Support heroes. Attack heroes provide damage; Support heroes can improve survival, damage output, control, or other team functions depending on their kits. The official Google Play editorial guide describes the same broad class rule: Defense heroes belong in front, while Attack and Support heroes work from behind them.

This is a beginner-safe arrangement rather than an unbreakable law. A hero whose skill explicitly changes targeting, protects an ally, or requires a particular position may justify an exception. However, the available guides do not establish a universal list of exceptions, so test any deviation against the actual battle result instead of assuming a special arrangement is always better.
Your strongest hero squad might not fit in the kind of formation we suggested earlier.
That sentence from the Google Play editorial guide is the important qualification. Use the two-front/three-back pattern as your starting template, then adapt it to the five heroes you can actually build.
What troop type means for formation bonuses
The guides identify three troop types for squad composition: Tank, Aircraft (also called Air), and Missile Vehicle. A squad can contain heroes from different types, but same-type composition bonuses make concentration attractive when your roster supports it.
Last War Vault reports the following bonuses to HP, Attack, and Defense. These are guide-reported game mechanics from a secondary publisher, not values independently confirmed in an official game document. Menus and balance can change, so compare the figures with the current in-game formation screen before investing resources solely for a breakpoint.

The published figures list both a three-hero same-type bonus of +5% and a three-plus-two arrangement reported at +10%. Because the conditions are not fully explained in the guide summary, read the exact bonus text shown in your game rather than assuming every three-hero combination behaves identically. The safe strategic conclusion is that the listed bonus generally increases as you approach five heroes of one type, with five providing the largest listed value.
Why five of one type is a useful default
A five-hero mono-type squad gives every slot the reported +20% HP, Attack, and Defense composition bonus. That raises the value of both your frontline and your backline without requiring you to split development across several troop categories. It is especially practical when you already have five heroes of one type with comparable levels, gear, and skills.

Mono-type composition is not an automatic win condition. The bonus cannot compensate for a badly underdeveloped hero, a missing frontline role, or a skill combination that fails the activity. A mixed squad with two strong Defense heroes and three effective damage or support heroes can outperform a nominally complete mono squad if the fifth same-type hero is far behind in development.
Guide-reported additional mono-squad mechanics
Last War Hub separately describes two other mono-squad benefits: a same-type bonus associated with an Exclusive Weapon at level 20, and a mono-squad stat bonus unlocked after Capital occupation at HQ32. Those are community-guide descriptions, not timeless official guarantees. Check the current requirement, wording, and activation state in your account before planning around either mechanic. They may depend on progression, season, or a later balance change.
A role-first method for building your best squad
Use this process whenever you unlock a hero, respec a squad, or enter a different activity. It prevents the common mistake of chasing a composition percentage while neglecting the jobs each position must perform.
- List viable heroes, not every hero. Record each hero’s troop type, class, level, equipment quality, skill levels, and any exclusive-weapon progress. Mark heroes who are close to your main squad’s development and separate them from temporary placeholders.
- Choose the activity. Decide whether the squad is for routine PvE, PvP, VS Kill Day, Desert Storm Battlefield, Zombie Siege, or another activity. Packsify names those modes as contexts in which composition decisions can differ. Do not assume a squad that clears routine enemies will have the same priorities against a player-controlled opponent.
- Lock the frontline first. Select two Defense heroes who can survive the expected opening damage. Compare actual durability and useful defensive effects, not just rarity or troop type. If one candidate is dramatically weaker, keep the stronger Defense hero even when doing so reduces a mono-type count.
- Fill the back row with purpose. Add three Attack and/or Support heroes. Make sure the backline has a clear damage plan and enough support to keep the front alive or amplify the team’s output. Three heroes that all perform the same narrow job can leave the squad unable to finish targets or survive pressure.
- Check troop-type counts. Count Tank, Aircraft/Air, and Missile Vehicle heroes after the role requirements are met. If five equally viable heroes share a type, try the mono lineup first. If not, compare the strongest practical 4-plus-1, 3-plus-2, or mixed arrangement shown by your current bonus panel.
- Compare development cost. Ask what you must spend to make the composition work. A theoretical +20% bonus is not valuable if reaching it requires moving scarce gear, skill materials, or experience away from several stronger heroes.
- Run a controlled comparison. Use the same activity and similar opponent or stage conditions for each test. Change one meaningful variable at a time: for example, replace the weak fifth mono-type hero with your best developed off-type hero while keeping the other four positions unchanged.
- Save mode-specific squads. If the game allows multiple presets, keep a general-purpose formation and separate presets for activities that demand different damage, durability, or control. Recheck them after a hero balance patch or a major progression unlock.
Choosing between mono and mixed compositions

When to favor mono-type
- You have five heroes of the same type whose levels, gear, and skills are reasonably close.
- Your two best frontline candidates are included in that type.
- The formation screen confirms the expected composition bonus.
- You are building a stable general-purpose squad and do not need a specialized event counter.
When to break mono-type
- Your strongest Defense hero is off-type and replacing them makes the front row collapse.
- The fifth same-type hero is substantially underdeveloped.
- Your three backline slots lack either sufficient damage or the support needed for the activity.
- A mode, opponent, or event rule rewards a different skill arrangement.
- You are still developing the account and cannot afford to split key resources just to reach a composition threshold.
Practical formation examples without a fixed hero list
The following examples use roles and troop types rather than named heroes because no current source establishes one named lineup as best for every account. Replace the labels with the strongest heroes you own.

Example 1: a complete mono-Tank squad
Choose two developed Tank Defense heroes for the front and three Tank Attack or Support heroes for the back. This is a sound default when all five are close in development and the game confirms the five-of-one-type bonus. Do not move a fragile Tank hero forward merely to keep the type count; class and survivability still determine placement.
Example 2: four Aircraft heroes and one off-type specialist
Place the two strongest Defense heroes in front, then use the best three backline contributors. If four Aircraft heroes make the role plan work and the off-type hero is a strong specialist, compare the reported +15% four-hero bonus against the specialist’s real contribution. Keep the specialist when the mixed version survives longer or completes the activity faster.
Example 3: three Missile Vehicle heroes plus two Tank heroes
Use the two most durable Defense heroes in front and the remaining three Attack or Support heroes behind them, regardless of which of the two types they represent. The guide-reported 3-plus-2 bonus can make this an efficient bridge while you develop a fifth hero, but confirm the exact bonus shown by your account.

Example 4: an early account with uneven upgrades
Do not bench your best-developed Defense hero because a lower-level hero would create a cleaner type count. Build a functional two-front/three-back squad first. As the roster catches up, retest a four- or five-hero mono arrangement and move resources only when the resulting battle performance improves.

Frontline selection checklist
- Both heroes are Defense class or otherwise demonstrably durable in your current build.
- Their equipment and skills are high enough to survive the opening exchange.
- They do not both depend on the same narrow trigger that the activity rarely provides.
- You have checked which hero is more reliable under the actual enemy damage pattern.
Backline selection checklist
- At least one hero supplies dependable damage for the activity.
- Support effects address the squad’s main weakness instead of duplicating an effect you already have.
- Backline heroes are developed enough to contribute before the frontline falls.
- The three slots together preserve the desired troop-type count where practical.
Resource priorities
Concentrate core upgrades on the five heroes in your primary squad before spreading materials across many partially built heroes. When deciding between a composition upgrade and a direct power upgrade, compare the complete squad: a well-equipped off-type hero may add more usable power than an untouched same-type substitute. Revisit that decision after unlocking a new hero, reaching a major headquarters milestone, or acquiring an Exclusive Weapon upgrade.
Adapting the formation to game mode and opponent
Packsify identifies PvP, VS Kill Day, Desert Storm Battlefield, and Zombie Siege as situations in which players may adjust their squad. The available guides do not prove that Tank, Aircraft/Air, or Missile Vehicle is a guaranteed counter to another type in any of those activities. Treat matchup claims as hypotheses to test, not as universal rules.
PvP and VS Kill Day
In player-versus-player settings, inspect whether your frontline survives the opponent’s opening sequence and whether your backline can focus enough damage before being overwhelmed. A slightly smaller composition bonus can be justified when it gives you a stronger Defense pair or a more effective support package.
Desert Storm Battlefield
Battlefield objectives and enemy compositions can make a general-purpose preset less suitable. Keep the role-first layout, then adjust the backline for the task you are performing. Record which changes improve results rather than assuming the same preset works for every battlefield encounter.

Zombie Siege and routine PvE
Against predictable enemies, sustained damage and dependable survival are often easier to evaluate. This is a good environment for testing whether your mono-type bonus produces a measurable improvement over a mixed squad with stronger individual heroes.

Forcing five of one type with a weak fifth hero
Symptom: the formation panel shows a larger bonus, but the squad loses a frontline hero early or takes longer to finish encounters.

Fix: restore the stronger developed hero, even if the count drops to four or three, and invest in the fifth candidate before testing mono again.
Putting an Attack hero in front because of rarity
Symptom: damage looks high on paper, yet the backline never has time to use its skills.
Fix: return two durable Defense heroes to the front and compare complete battle duration, not just the opening damage number.
Ignoring Support because the squad already has damage
Symptom: the team starts strongly but cannot sustain output or protect its frontline.
Fix: test one Support slot against a third pure attacker. Keep the version that meets the activity’s win condition more reliably.
Assuming a guide’s percentage is permanent
Symptom: the bonus in your account differs from a published table.
Fix: read the current in-game tooltip, check whether a progression requirement or season rule applies, and treat older guide values as historical until confirmed.

Using one preset for every activity
Symptom: a squad that performs well in routine PvE underperforms in PvP or an event battlefield.
Fix: maintain a general preset plus tested mode-specific alternatives, while preserving the two-front/three-back role foundation unless the activity clearly requires otherwise.

When you need to choose immediately, answer these questions in order:

- Which three heroes can provide the required damage and support from the back?
- How many of those five share Tank, Aircraft/Air, or Missile Vehicle type?
- Does the current game screen confirm the expected composition bonus?
- Is the fifth same-type candidate developed enough to justify replacing a stronger off-type hero?
- Is this squad for general use, or does the activity or opponent demand a different test?
If the answers point to five comparable heroes of one type, start with the mono squad and verify it in battle. If they do not, use the strongest role-complete five-hero formation and treat composition bonuses as a secondary optimization.
What the current evidence can—and cannot—establish
The official Google Play editorial guidance supports the Defense-front, Attack-and-Support-back principle. Last War Vault supplies the explicit five-hero, two-front/three-back layout and the percentage table reproduced above. Packsify and Last War Hub add practical mono-squad and activity context. These sources support a flexible formation framework, not a definitive hero-by-hero meta list.
Hero balance, exclusive weapons, progression systems, and event rules can change. Recheck the in-game tooltips after updates, and judge a formation by the performance of the five heroes you can actually develop. That account-specific check is why a role-first mono-type default is more reliable than copying a named lineup.
