For a sensible starting setup in Hell Is Us on Nintendo Switch 2, turn Camera Follow off, set Movement Lag and Rotation Lag to 0.5, and leave Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers visible. If the image feels strained, reduce Foliage first, then try Global Illumination, Post-Processing, Shading or Textures.

These recommendations are a control-and-clarity baseline, not a guaranteed performance mode. Available information does not verify a Switch 2 frame-rate target, resolution, or a docked-versus-handheld performance difference, so adjust one option at a time and judge the result on your own system.

Recommended starting settings

Use the following baseline before making more aggressive changes. The control values come from third-party recommendations for camera feel and combat readability. The graphics order follows general settings guidance rather than a Switch 2 benchmark.

Setting Starting value Why use it What it does not prove
Camera Follow Off Stops automatic camera assistance from continually steering the view while you explore or fight. It does not reduce rendering work or increase frame rate.
Movement Lag 0.5 A middle-ground response for character movement. It is a feel adjustment, not a CPU or GPU setting.
Rotation Lag 0.5 Balances responsive turning with less abrupt camera movement. It does not change resolution or image quality.
Enemy Tier Indicators Visible Keeps enemy-level information available during encounters. It has not been shown to affect Switch 2 performance measurably.
Enemy Damage Numbers Visible Makes the result of attacks easier to read, especially when several effects overlap. It is a readability choice rather than a graphics-performance fix.
Foliage Lower first if needed Reduces the density or quality of vegetation when the scene feels heavy. No measured Switch 2 improvement is established.
Global Illumination Reduce after foliage if needed Can lessen lighting complexity while preserving more scene detail than immediately lowering every option. The available guidance does not quantify the gain.
Post-Processing Reduce after lighting if needed Can simplify screen-space effects and other finishing treatments. There is no verified Switch 2 target associated with this change.
Shading Reduce if the image still struggles Trades some surface and lighting quality for a lighter rendering workload. The exact visual and performance cost on Switch 2 is not documented.
Textures Reduce last among the listed options Preserves texture detail until other changes have been tried. Texture memory behavior and resolution targets are not published here.

What changed for the Switch 2 version

An official Steam announcement says the Nintendo Switch 2 release arrived with a major update on October 8, 2026. That update included optimization and settings-related changes. Because the announcement does not establish a tested frame-rate mode, resolution target, or separate docked and handheld profile, treat the release as updated software rather than as proof of a particular performance specification.

If your copy was installed before that date, allow the console to finish downloading and applying its current update before evaluating settings. Comparing behavior before and after an update can otherwise make an option change appear responsible for an improvement that came from the patch.

How to apply the baseline without guessing

The available guidance identifies the settings but does not document a Switch 2-specific menu path or the exact wording of every submenu. Use the closest matching entries in the current in-game settings screen; do not assume that a console-level display option has the same effect as an in-game graphics option.

  1. Launch Hell Is Us and load a save in an area where you can move, turn and fight safely.
  2. Open the game’s pause menu and enter its settings or options screen.
  3. Find the camera or control section. Set Camera Follow to Off, then set Movement Lag and Rotation Lag to 0.5.
  4. Find the gameplay or interface section and make sure Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers are visible.
  5. Apply or save the changes if the menu offers a separate confirmation. Return to the same test area.
  6. Play long enough to assess both traversal and combat. A setting that feels comfortable while walking may feel too loose or too assisted when turning during a fight.
  7. Only after the control baseline feels right should you change a graphics option. Record the original value so you can undo the change.

Why the control values are a useful middle ground

Camera Follow off

With camera assistance disabled, the view is less likely to rotate independently of your own input. That can make landmarks, doorways and approach angles easier to inspect because the game is not continually correcting the view. The trade-off is that you must manage camera positioning yourself. Players who prefer automatic framing may find this less comfortable, particularly during close encounters.

Camera Follow changes perceived control and orientation. It does not remove foliage, simplify lighting or otherwise lower the amount of work the Switch 2 performs.

Movement Lag at 0.5

A value of 0.5 is a neutral starting point for the delay or smoothing applied to movement input. If movement feels sluggish, test a lower value; if very quick changes feel nervous, test a higher value. Make small changes and keep the camera setting unchanged while you evaluate them, otherwise you will not know which adjustment caused the difference.

  • Harness the Power of the Box – Combine the unique, hellish abilities of the Configuration with an arsenal of earthly weapons to inflict bone-breaking, flesh-searing pain - or is it pleasure? - upon masochistic enemies.
  • Fight Against Unholy Enemies – Take on hell's wretches, deviants, cultists, and even its most infernal priests in a story-driven horror survival game.

Rotation Lag at 0.5

Rotation Lag controls how quickly turning follows your input. At 0.5, begin with a compromise between immediate response and a less abrupt view. Players using a handheld system at a short viewing distance may prefer a different value from players using a television, but that is a comfort preference, not a documented performance distinction.

Keeping exploration and combat readable

Enemy Tier Indicators

Leave Enemy Tier Indicators visible while learning encounters or returning to an area after upgrading. The indicator supplies context before you commit to an attack, so hiding it removes information that can help you decide whether to engage, reposition or leave.

Enemy Damage Numbers

Leave Enemy Damage Numbers visible if you want immediate confirmation that an attack connected and how effective it was. They are especially useful when effects, movement or multiple enemies make health-bar changes difficult to see. Turn them off only if the numbers themselves obstruct your view; there is no evidence here that hiding them produces a meaningful Switch 2 performance gain.

Information versus visual simplicity

Indicators and damage numbers add interface information, while foliage and rendering effects affect the scene itself. Separating those choices lets you simplify the image without sacrificing combat feedback. Do not disable useful combat information as a first response to a rendering problem.

Graphics tuning order for a strained image

Change the listed graphics options in sequence rather than dropping everything to its lowest value. After each change, revisit the same demanding location and repeat the same movement or combat action. This gives you a practical comparison even though no published Switch 2 benchmark supplies a numerical result.

1. Lower Foliage

Foliage is the recommended first graphics change. Vegetation can occupy a large part of an outdoor view and can make motion or distant navigation harder to read. Lowering it may make the scene less dense, so inspect both frame consistency and whether paths, objects and enemies are easier to distinguish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Lower Global Illumination

If foliage is not enough, reduce Global Illumination. This can change the way indirect light, shadows and ambient brightness appear. Check interiors and shaded outdoor areas after changing it; a setting that improves a busy exterior may make a darker location harder to read.

3. Lower Post-Processing

Post-Processing controls finishing effects applied after the main scene is rendered. Reducing it may produce a cleaner or less stylized image, depending on the game’s implementation. Compare motion clarity as well as still-image quality, because an effect can look attractive when stationary yet make movement feel less clear.

4. Lower Shading

Shading quality affects how surfaces and lighting are calculated or displayed. Lower it when the previous changes have not produced a comfortable result. Look at character silhouettes, rock faces and other surfaces you use for navigation before deciding whether the visual trade-off is acceptable.

5. Lower Textures

Try Textures after the other listed options. Texture changes can be conspicuous on nearby walls, clothing and environmental objects, while the available material does not provide a Switch 2-specific measurement showing that they are the most effective first reduction. Restore textures if the image becomes unnecessarily soft and another option provides a better compromise.

Control comfort and image quality are separate decisions

Priority Use this approach Trade-off
Direct control Camera Follow off; begin with both lag values at 0.5. You take responsibility for framing and may need to move the camera more often.
Automatic assistance Keep Camera Follow on if independent camera correction is more comfortable. The view may feel less predictable when you are inspecting a route or lining up an attack.
Exploration clarity Keep enemy indicators and damage numbers visible; lower foliage before reducing other visual settings. Lower foliage can make outdoor scenes look less full.
Visual richness Keep graphics options higher and change only the setting that causes a problem. A demanding area may remain less consistent on your particular system.

This table describes decision trade-offs, not measured Switch 2 results. The available sources do not report numerical values for control comfort, exploration readability, or performance in handheld and docked modes.

Handheld and docked use

There is no verified docked-versus-handheld benchmark for this release in the available information. Do not promise that one mode runs at a particular frame rate or resolution. Instead, choose settings based on where a problem is visible to you.

  • On the built-in screen, prioritize readable silhouettes, indicators and damage numbers. A lower visual setting is worthwhile if it makes movement easier to follow at that viewing distance.
  • On a television, inspect distant vegetation, lighting changes and small interface elements from your normal seating position. A setting that looks acceptable up close may appear too soft or too busy farther away.
  • Use the same graphics values when comparing modes initially. Change one option only after you have identified a real difference, rather than assuming the console needs a separate preset.

A one-change-at-a-time testing method

Because no authoritative Switch 2 benchmark establishes a target, your own repeatable observation is the safest way to tune the game.

  1. Choose one outdoor area with foliage and one combat encounter that you can reach consistently.
  2. Write down the current values for Foliage, Global Illumination, Post-Processing, Shading and Textures.
  3. Perform the same route, camera turns and combat actions with the baseline settings.
  4. Change only Foliage and repeat the route. Note whether motion feels steadier, whether the scene is easier to parse, and whether any new visual distraction appears.
  5. Keep the change only if it solves a problem you actually experienced. Otherwise restore it and test the next option.
  6. After graphics testing, revisit Camera Follow and the two lag values separately if the remaining issue is input feel rather than visible rendering.

This process distinguishes a smoother-looking image from a more responsive control scheme. Neither should be treated as proof of a fixed frame-rate target.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The camera feels like it is fighting your input

Confirm that Camera Follow is off. If the view still feels delayed, test Movement Lag and Rotation Lag separately around the 0.5 starting point. Avoid changing graphics options for this symptom; rendering quality cannot correct automatic camera behavior or input smoothing.

Exploration feels visually busy

Keep the combat indicators available, then lower Foliage first. If lighting effects still obscure routes or objects, test Global Illumination and Post-Processing one at a time. This preserves useful enemy information while simplifying the scene.

Combat feedback is hard to read

Check that Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers are visible. If the scene remains difficult to parse, evaluate camera positioning and Rotation Lag before hiding information. A lower graphics setting may help, but removing the indicators can make decisions less informed.

The image still feels strained after several changes

Confirm that the October 8, 2026 update has installed, then restore any option whose visual cost is not worth its benefit and test the remaining settings individually. The available sources do not identify a guaranteed performance mode, so there is no documented switch that can promise a fixed result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A setting change appears to do nothing

Repeat the comparison in the same location and under the same actions. A quiet corridor may not expose the difference between settings that become costly outdoors or during combat. If the result remains indistinguishable, keep the higher-quality value and avoid sacrificing image quality without an observable benefit.

What is and is not established about performance

  • Established as a practical baseline: Camera Follow off; Movement Lag 0.5; Rotation Lag 0.5; Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers visible.
  • Established as a tuning order: lower Foliage first, followed by Global Illumination, Post-Processing, Shading or Textures if necessary.
  • Established platform context: the Switch 2 version launched with a major optimization and settings update on October 8, 2026, according to an official Steam announcement.
  • Not established: a verified performance mode, target frame rate, target resolution, or measured difference between handheld and docked play.

That boundary matters when choosing settings. A recommendation can improve perceived control or reduce visual load without guaranteeing a particular number of frames per second.

Practical final setup

Start with Camera Follow off, both lag values at 0.5, and the two enemy-information options visible. Play normally before changing graphics. If you notice inconsistent rendering, lower Foliage; then proceed through Global Illumination, Post-Processing, Shading and Textures only as needed. Keep the first setting that solves the problem without making navigation or combat harder to read.
