Microsoft Clarity is the best starting point for most WordPress sites. Its WordPress plugin provides click, scroll and movement heatmaps, session recordings and engagement signals such as rage clicks, while its free plan is listed as allowing unlimited sessions. Choose Crazy Egg when you need heatmaps alongside A/B testing and conversion funnels, Hotjar when surveys and visitor feedback matter most, Mouseflow when form abandonment is the problem, or Nelio A/B Testing when you want experimentation inside the WordPress dashboard.
The right choice depends less on the color overlays than on what you intend to do after finding a problem. This guide compares the leading options, explains installation and tracking, and shows how to choose without adding unnecessary scripts or collecting data you do not need.
What a WordPress heatmap plugin actually does
A heatmap turns visitor behavior into a visual layer over a page. Depending on the product, you can see where people click or tap, how far they scroll, where the pointer moves, and which areas receive the most visual attention. Session recordings add a replay of an individual visit, while related tools can collect survey responses, analyze forms or run controlled page tests.

#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Are visitors clicking an element that looks interactive but is not?
- Do mobile users reach the call to action, pricing table or checkout button?
- Does a long article lose most readers before the key explanation?
- Which form field causes people to abandon registration or checkout?
- Is a new headline or layout improving completed conversions rather than just clicks?
A color scale is not a verdict. A “hot” area may simply be a navigation element seen on every page, and a “cold” area may be below the fold rather than unwanted. Use the overlay to form a hypothesis, then validate it with recordings, conversion data, a survey or an experiment.

Microsoft Clarity: the best free first step
Microsoft’s July 30, 2025 WordPress integration update describes Clarity as offering “built-in heatmaps, session recordings, and engagement metrics like rage clicks.” The plugin is installed from the WordPress admin panel, so a site owner can add behavior measurement without editing theme files. A 2026 comparison lists Clarity as a one-click plugin with an unlimited free plan.
Clarity is the practical default when you need to see clicks and scrolling across a content site, service site or store before committing to a paid analytics subscription. Unlimited sessions are particularly useful for sites whose traffic is unpredictable: you do not have to choose which days or campaigns to sample.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Where Clarity fits well
- Finding dead clicks, repeated clicks and rage clicks around buttons, links or form controls.
- Checking whether visitors reach important sections on desktop and mobile layouts.
- Watching recordings to understand what a heatmap cannot explain, such as hesitation, backtracking or a broken interaction.
- Establishing a baseline before changing a landing page or checkout flow.
Trade-offs to check
An unlimited-session offer does not mean unlimited data retention, exports, integrations or support. Before enabling tracking, review the current Clarity settings for masking, retention, regional processing and script behavior. Sites that handle health, financial, employment or other sensitive information should confirm that the default masking and collection rules meet their obligations.
Crazy Egg: best when heatmaps must lead to action
Crazy Egg is the stronger choice when a team wants visual reports tied directly to conversion optimization. Its listed Starter plan costs $29 per month billed annually and includes 5,000 tracked pageviews per month, five heatmap reports, 50 recordings per month, six months of recording storage, unlimited conversion tracking and funnel reports, unlimited surveys and responses, and AI analysis for heatmaps and recordings. Plus and Pro plans add higher limits and A/B testing.
The pageview allowance is a monthly plan limit, not a statement about the number of people who may visit your site. A single visitor can generate several pageviews, and a high-traffic store can exhaust 5,000 pageviews quickly. Estimate your normal monthly pageviews before selecting a tier.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
Why choose it
- Use heatmaps to identify a problem, then connect that problem to a funnel or conversion goal.
- Use recordings to inspect the journeys behind unusually high or low conversion rates.
- Use surveys to ask visitors what prevented them from completing a task.
- Move to a higher tier when you need built-in A/B testing rather than a separate experimentation system.
Hotjar: best for feedback-led design decisions
Hotjar is positioned around surveys together with heatmaps. That combination suits teams that need to know not only where visitors click, but also why they are confused, unconvinced or unable to finish. A one-click WordPress installation path is listed, and WordPress.org includes a Hotjar plugin in its heatmap category.
Plan names, ownership details, retention rules and quotas can change, so verify those items on the vendor’s current site before buying. Treat any free allowance as a way to validate the workflow, not as a permanent assumption about volume.
When feedback is more valuable than another recording
If a product page receives plenty of traffic but few purchases, a heatmap can show that visitors reach the pricing section while a short survey can reveal whether the issue is price, missing information or a trust concern. Use a narrowly worded question at a meaningful point in the journey; broad pop-ups tend to produce vague answers and can interfere with the behavior you are trying to measure.
Mouseflow: best for form abandonment
Mouseflow is a WordPress-installable option focused on form analytics. It is a good fit when your key question is, “Which field causes people to leave?” rather than, “Which part of the page is hottest?” WPNeon also identifies Mouseflow for seeing the form field at which people abandon a submission.
Questions form analytics can answer
- Do users start a form but stop at phone, address or payment fields?
- Are validation messages forcing repeated attempts?
- Does a required field appear optional, or does an error fail to explain what is wrong?
- Does the mobile keyboard or layout hide the next control?
Combine field-level results with recordings and completed-submission data. A field with many exits may be necessary and difficult, or it may simply be the last field in a long form. The sequence matters.
Nelio A/B Testing: best for a WordPress-native workflow
WordPress.org describes Nelio A/B Testing as a conversion-optimization plugin associated with A/B testing and heatmaps. It is the clearest choice for a team that wants to configure experiments, monitor results and manage optimization from within WordPress rather than adopting a separate analytics dashboard.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Use this approach when your operating model is “change one variable, measure a conversion, keep the winner.” Define the conversion before launching a test, allow enough traffic for a meaningful comparison, and avoid changing the page or goal while the test is running. A heatmap can explain behavior, but only a properly defined experiment can support a causal claim about which version performed better.
Other plugins and services worth screening
A 2026 comparison also lists Lucky Orange, Aurora Heatmap, Plerdy and UserFeedback. Their current prices, traffic limits, retention policies and feature sets are time-sensitive. Consider them only after checking the present vendor documentation and confirming that the WordPress integration, privacy controls and reporting depth match your needs.

How to install a heatmap plugin in WordPress
The exact labels vary by plugin, but the safe installation sequence is similar. Start on a staging site if your organization requires change review.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the baseline. Note your current conversion rate, form completion rate, key pageviews and page-load measurements for the pages you plan to track. Without a baseline, a colorful overlay cannot tell you whether the site improved.
- Back up WordPress. Create a current backup of the database and files, and confirm that you can restore it before adding a new plugin.
- Install from the dashboard. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for the product by its exact name, select the plugin published by the appropriate developer, and choose Install Now. Then select Activate.
- Connect the account. Open the new plugin’s settings page. Depending on the service, you will sign in, create a project or paste a site identifier. Use a separate project for staging so test traffic does not pollute production reports.
- Choose the tracked scope. Begin with the landing page, signup flow, product detail page or checkout step that has a measurable problem. Exclude admin screens, account pages and sensitive paths where the provider’s controls require it.
- Configure masking and consent. Mask text inputs and other sensitive fields, set the appropriate consent behavior for your visitors’ jurisdictions, and review whether the script loads before or after consent.
- Verify collection. Open the page in a private browser window, click a test link, scroll through the page and submit a non-production test form. Confirm that a visit appears in the dashboard and that sensitive values are masked.
- Measure for a complete cycle. Collect data across normal weekdays, weekends and campaign periods before making a design decision. Do not treat the first few visits as representative.
How to track clicks and scrolls without misreading the report
Click maps
Look for clusters on primary links, navigation items, calls to action and elements that users may mistake for buttons. Investigate high activity on non-clickable images, headings or labels; it can indicate a discoverability problem or a misleading design. Segment desktop and mobile views because a shared overlay can hide a layout-specific issue.
Scroll maps
Compare the location of the key message or call to action with the depth reached by visitors. If the majority stops before the value proposition, shorten the introduction or move the proof and next step upward. If visitors reach the bottom but do not click, the issue may be relevance, wording or trust rather than visibility.
Movement and attention
Pointer movement is a proxy, not a measurement of eye gaze. Treat it as a prompt to inspect a recording or test an alternative layout. On touch devices, movement data has a different meaning, so never combine mobile and desktop conclusions without separate views.
Rank #4
- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
Rage clicks and dead clicks
Repeated clicks can indicate a slow response, a broken control, an overlay blocking the target or an element that looks interactive. Reproduce the path yourself, check browser-console errors and test the page on the device where the signal is concentrated.
Privacy, consent and performance checklist
Heatmap scripts observe real behavior, so selecting a plugin is also a data-governance decision. Before launch, document:
- Which pages and events are collected and which are excluded.
- How text fields, passwords, payment details and free-form comments are masked.
- Where data is processed and whether regional processing options are available.
- How long recordings and reports are retained and whether deletion is possible.
- Whether consent is required before the script runs for your audience.
- How the script is loaded, including its effect on the critical rendering path and third-party requests.
- Who can view recordings and whether account access is protected with multi-factor authentication.
Run a performance check with tracking enabled and disabled on the same page template. If a plugin adds a noticeable delay, restrict tracking to the pages under investigation, defer the script where the provider supports it, or choose a lighter workflow based on aggregate reports instead of continuous recordings.
Choosing by traffic and budget
Small site or early investigation
Start with Microsoft Clarity if an unlimited free session allowance and broad behavior signals meet your needs. Track only the pages tied to a real question, and establish a baseline before redesigning.
Growing site with a conversion team
Crazy Egg becomes more compelling when funnels, conversion tracking, surveys and AI-assisted report analysis justify a recurring subscription. Its listed Starter allowance of 5,000 pageviews and 50 recordings per month should be compared with your actual traffic, not your hosting plan.

Agency or team committed to WordPress
Nelio A/B Testing is the natural candidate when experiment setup and reporting must remain in the WordPress administration area. Confirm that its current plan supports the number of sites, tests and conversion goals you operate.
Common failure modes and fixes
The heatmap is empty
Confirm that the tracking code is present on the public page, the correct project is connected, ad or privacy tools are not blocking collection, and enough time has passed for processing. Test with a private browser and check that the URL is not excluded by a rule.
Clicks appear in the wrong place
Responsive layouts, cached HTML and dynamically inserted elements can shift coordinates. Clear the page cache, separate device views and inspect a current recording before acting on the overlay.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Recordings show sensitive text
Pause collection, tighten masking rules, remove exposed data according to the provider’s deletion process, and retest with synthetic values. Do not rely on a team promise not to inspect unmasked fields.
Reports disagree with analytics
Different tools count sessions, pageviews, bots, consented visits and return visits differently. Compare trends within one tool, document the counting definitions and use your conversion system as the source of truth for completed transactions.
The site slows down
Measure the script’s effect on real templates, then limit tracked pages, defer loading when supported, or replace continuous recording with shorter diagnostic campaigns. Remove duplicate tracking snippets left by an earlier plugin.
A practical decision process
- Write one sentence describing the decision you need to make, such as “Why do mobile visitors abandon checkout?”
- Select the minimum evidence: Clarity for broad behavior, Crazy Egg for funnels and testing, Hotjar for feedback, Mouseflow for forms, or Nelio A/B Testing for WordPress-native experiments.
- Define the success metric before collecting data.
- Segment by device, traffic source, page template and new versus returning visitor where the tool permits.
- Review enough traffic to cover ordinary variation, then inspect representative recordings.
- Make one change, document it, and measure the same metric after release.
This process prevents the most common heatmap mistake: optimizing the hottest color instead of solving the largest measurable obstacle.
