There is no single best health app for everyone: a patient portal, sleep tracker, pharmacy app and glucose-monitoring app do different jobs. The strongest choice is the one that fits your health goal, devices and care team—and whose data practices and costs you understand. The examples below are drawn from apps listed in the US Apple App Store Medical chart snapshot; they are not endorsements, a quality ranking or a complete list of 100 verified apps.

Why this is a guide to choosing—not a ranking of 100 apps

Health apps span patient records, finding care, prescriptions, telehealth, fitness, sleep, pregnancy and condition monitoring. Grouping them all into one “best” ranking can make unlike products look comparable. The current US Apple App Store Medical chart is a marketplace snapshot, not a quality assessment or a comprehensive directory; its positions can change.

The available evidence supports a selection framework and a limited set of named examples, but not a responsibly verified list of 100 current apps. App availability, features, prices, regional limits, integrations and privacy terms need to be checked for each candidate. The apps below are examples of different use cases, not claims that they are the best in their category.

Examples by health need

Records, test results and care

  • MyChart and healow are patient-facing medical apps listed in the US Apple Medical chart. Whether either gives you access to your records depends on your provider’s participation.
  • MyLabcorp and MyQuest are listed as lab-result and patient-portal apps. Check which laboratory or provider handled your tests and what account or identity checks are required.
  • SimplePractice is listed as a telehealth example. Confirm that your clinician uses it and ask about appointment access, fees and how visit information is handled.
  • Zocdoc is listed as a doctor-finding and booking example. Appointment availability and participating clinicians can vary by location.

Prescriptions and pharmacy services

  • CVS Health is listed as a pharmacy and healthcare app. Its usefulness depends on whether its services match your pharmacy and care needs.
  • GoodRx is listed for prescription savings and medication tools. Check the terms for the particular prescription and pharmacy rather than assuming a displayed savings option applies to every purchase.

Pregnancy, babies and musculoskeletal care

  • Pregnancy+ is listed as a pregnancy-tracking example.
  • Huckleberry is listed as a baby-tracking example.
  • Hinge Health is listed for joint and muscle care. For pain, injury or treatment decisions, distinguish an app’s general guidance from care recommended by a qualified clinician.

Condition monitoring

  • Libre by Abbott and Dexcom G7 are listed as continuous glucose monitoring examples. These are not interchangeable with ordinary wellness or food-logging apps: verify device compatibility, prescribed use and clinician guidance for your situation.

Health-data hubs and wearables

  • Apple Health can organize information such as medications, sleep and activity; Apple also describes mood tracking, mental-health questionnaires and privacy protections. Those privacy statements are Apple’s description of its product, not a guarantee about every connected app or service.
  • Google Health is described by Google as bringing together fitness, sleep and health information from wearables, apps and medical records, with a premium AI health coach. Google says availability and features vary, some functions require a premium subscription, and the app is not intended for medical purposes. Its May 7, 2026 announcement described Fitbit Air as a wearable that pairs with Google Health. A wearable is optional, and that pairing does not imply compatibility with every health app.

How to choose an app without overbuying or oversharing

1. Start with one specific job

Write down what you need the app to do: show records from a participating provider, help book an appointment, organize medication information, track activity or connect to a prescribed monitor. Prefer an app that solves that job over one with a longer feature list. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology advises consumers to check whether an app meets their needs and claims, and whether it protects health information.

2. Check evidence and the stakes of getting it wrong

A general wellness tracker is not the same as software that diagnoses, treats or guides management of a medical condition. The FDA regulates certain software functions that meet the statutory definition of a medical device, using a risk-based approach; it does not regulate every health-related app as a device. The FDA says: “The FDA applies the same risk-based approach to device software functions as the agency uses to assure safety and effectiveness for other medical devices.” Do not treat an “FDA approved” claim as meaningful without verifying the exact product and regulatory status. For decisions about diagnosis or treatment, consult a qualified clinician rather than relying on an app alone.

3. Confirm platform, device and provider fit

Before signing up, check whether the app supports your phone, operating system, wearable or medical device; whether it requires a separate account; and whether your provider, laboratory or insurer must participate. If the app imports data from another service, check whether the connection is available in your region and whether it can be disconnected later. Apple and Google describe different health-data aggregation and device-connection features, so do not assume information will sync across platforms or products automatically.

4. Inspect what happens to your health data

Read the app’s privacy notice and settings before entering sensitive information. Look for what it collects, why it collects it, who receives it, whether sharing can be disabled, and whether you can delete or export your information. Data may pass among an app, a device, a platform and a service provider; a platform’s security description does not settle every downstream data practice.

Using a health app does not automatically mean your information is protected by HIPAA. The Federal Trade Commission explains that some consumer health apps outside HIPAA may still fall under the Health Breach Notification Rule, including certain apps that combine information from multiple sources for an individual. Read the actual policy and sharing controls rather than assuming a health-related label determines the rules.

5. Compare the full cost and access requirements

Check which features are free, which require a subscription, and whether using the service also requires compatible hardware or ongoing care charges. Confirm language, accessibility, age and regional limits. For a portal or telehealth service, verify that your provider participates before investing time in setup.

6. Treat screening criteria as useful checks, not a universal seal

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Medicare App Library uses criteria that include security, privacy, clinical evidence, usability and equity. These are useful dimensions for comparing apps, but an app’s absence from that library does not by itself establish that it is unsafe or ineffective.

What “best” should mean for your shortlist

Use a simple comparison across the dimensions that matter to your use case:

  • Primary job: Does the app perform the task you need?
  • Evidence and claims: Is it for general information or wellness, or does it perform a regulated medical-device function? What evidence supports the specific claim?
  • Compatibility: Does it work with your phone, device, provider and other services?
  • Privacy and control: What data is collected and shared, and can you control, export or delete it?
  • Usability and access: Can you use it with your language, accessibility needs, location and provider?
  • Cost: What do subscriptions, hardware and ongoing services add up to?

Choose the app that clears the requirements for your particular job. For a medical device or condition-management app, compatibility and clinically appropriate use matter more than a broad feature count. For a records portal, provider participation is essential. For a wellness tracker, privacy, usability and whether you will actually use it may carry more weight.
