There is no single best headphone for every listener. For most people who need one premium wireless pair, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the strongest all-round candidate: current guides credit it with excellent noise cancellation, a microphone, LDAC support and roughly 30 hours or more of battery life, depending on how runtime is measured. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the better comfort-led alternative, while the Apple AirPods Max 2 make the most sense for people who use compatible Apple devices. Quiet-room listeners should also consider wired or open-back headphones, which trade portability and isolation for a more natural home-listening setup.
Choose by listening environment first, then check fit, call performance, device compatibility, battery evidence and portability. The recommendations below reflect current guide assessments and manufacturer specifications available through 2026; prices, stock, firmware and regional lineups can change.
Quick picks by use case
| What matters most | Best starting point | Why it fits | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| One premium wireless pair for commuting, travel and general use | Sony WH-1000XM6 | RTINGS’ September 2026 over-ear guide names it a top selection and cites strong ANC, a microphone, more than 31 hours with ANC enabled and LDAC. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3, USB-C charging, strong ANC and a 30-hour specification. | RTINGS warns that the relatively shallow earpads may not suit every ear or long session. |
| Long sessions where padding and comfort are the priority | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | RTINGS describes more generous headband and earcup padding than the Sony. Bose provides Quiet and Aware listening modes and publishes controlled battery figures. | RTINGS reports a weaker microphone system, and the headphones cannot be used passively. |
| Apple-device switching and ecosystem features | Apple AirPods Max 2 | RTINGS credits strong noise isolation and convenient switching between devices in the Apple ecosystem. | They are heavier than the Sony, the case offers limited protection, and some features require compatible Apple hardware. |
| Quiet-room listening at home | Wired or open-back headphones | What Hi-Fi? separates wired and open-back designs from portable wireless models because home listeners can prioritize listening environment and sound presentation over battery and folding convenience. | Open-back earcups leak sound and are unsuitable when you need privacy or isolation. |
These are use-case recommendations, not a claim that one model wins every category. Comfort, clamp, ear shape, room noise and the devices you already own can change the best choice.

Start with where and how you will listen
For a noisy commute or frequent flights
Prioritize effective active noise cancellation, a stable fit and enough battery for the longest journey you regularly make. ANC is most useful when low-frequency environmental noise is the problem, but it does not remove every sound and it is not the same as a physical seal. The Sony and Bose over-ears are the clearest candidates in the supplied 2026 comparisons because both are positioned around strong noise reduction. The Apple model is also credited with strong noise isolation, particularly for people already using compatible Apple devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check whether the earcups seal without excessive clamp. A poor seal can reduce perceived isolation even when the electronics are excellent. If you frequently need to hear station announcements, flight crews or a colleague, make sure the headphone’s transparency mode is easy to activate before buying.
For calls, meetings and voice messages
Microphone quality deserves its own decision rather than being inferred from ANC performance. RTINGS specifically notes a microphone on the Sony and a weaker microphone system on the Bose. What Hi-Fi? also calls out call quality for the Sony. If calls are central to your day, treat those assessments as meaningful differences and test your voice in the places where you actually work: a quiet room can hide wind and traffic problems.
Do not assume that a premium price guarantees broadcast-quality speech. Headphone microphones must handle wind, road noise and changing Bluetooth conditions, and a reviewer’s assessment may not match every phone or computer. Confirm that your main devices support the connection method you intend to use and that the microphone is available in the applications you rely on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor Apple-device owners
AirPods Max 2 is the ecosystem-led option in this group. RTINGS reports strong noise isolation and device switching, but also says that some features require compatible Apple devices. That qualification matters if you use a mix of phones, tablets and computers: basic audio may work outside the Apple ecosystem while convenience features do not.
Compare the actual devices in your household, not just the phone you use most. If a family computer or work laptop is on another platform, verify how switching, controls and feature access behave before making the Apple-specific convenience the deciding factor.
For quiet rooms and focused home listening
Home listening removes some reasons to choose wireless ANC. Wired headphones do not need a battery for the audio connection, and open-back designs are intended for environments where sound leakage is acceptable. What Hi-Fi? treats wired and open-back pairs as home-oriented choices because portability is less important there.
Open-back headphones let sound escape and let room sound in. That can be a good fit for a private room, but it is a poor choice beside a sleeping partner, in an office or anywhere other people can hear your playback. Closed-back headphones are the safer option when you need privacy or isolation. Decide whether your room and household can tolerate leakage before you optimize for any claimed sound character.

What ANC, passive isolation and transparency actually do
Active noise cancellation
Active noise cancellation uses microphones to detect surrounding sound and creates an opposing audio signal to reduce what reaches your ears. Bose describes this basic ANC operation on its product page. Its effectiveness depends on the fit, the frequency and consistency of the noise, and the headphone’s processing. A train rumble is a different challenge from nearby speech, clattering dishes or wind.
Passive isolation
Passive isolation comes from the physical earcups and pads blocking sound. Pad depth, seal, head shape and glasses can all affect it. A headphone can have powerful ANC yet feel ineffective if the pads do not seal, while a well-fitting closed-back pair can reduce some noise without any battery or processing.
Transparency and Aware modes
Transparency-style modes intentionally feed selected outside sound through the headphones. Bose calls its version Aware Mode. It is the opposite goal of ANC: instead of minimizing the environment, it makes useful environmental sound easier to hear while you continue listening. Use it for announcements or brief conversations, then return to a noise-reducing mode when you need concentration.
Detailed recommendations
Sony WH-1000XM6: the strongest premium all-round starting point
RTINGS’ over-ear guide updated in September 2026 names the WH-1000XM6 its best over-ear selection. The assessment credits strong noise cancellation, a microphone, more than 31 hours of runtime with ANC on and LDAC support. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide also places it among the leading premium wireless over-ears and lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codec support, USB-C charging, strong ANC, call quality and a 30-hour battery specification.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThose two battery numbers should not be treated as contradictory laboratory results. “Over 31 hours” is RTINGS’ test assessment with ANC enabled, while “30 hours” is What Hi-Fi?’s listed specification. They come from different sources and may use different volume, codec, firmware and test procedures. Use them as an indication of class, not a promise that every listener will see the same runtime.
The XM6 is a logical fit when one pair must cover a train commute, a flight, office listening and occasional calls. Its codec list also gives Android and other compatible devices more options than a basic SBC-only connection. Codec support alone does not guarantee better sound: the source device and software must support the codec, and your preferred service and settings still matter.
Comfort is the principal caution. RTINGS specifically flags shallow earpads. That can mean the driver area presses against larger ears or that the seal changes when you move. During a return-eligible trial, check the contact points after a full work block rather than judging fit after five minutes. If the pads touch your ears, create pressure at the temple or make your glasses uncomfortable, a technically excellent ANC result may not matter.

Sony announced the WH-1000XM6 on May 16, 2025. Because firmware, stock and regional bundles can change, confirm the current package and support information for your market before purchase.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): the comfort and ANC alternative
RTINGS describes the Bose as having more generous headband and earcup padding than the Sony. That makes it the first alternative to investigate when the XM6’s shallow pads are a poor match. Comfort remains personal: more padding does not guarantee a better seal or a cooler fit for every head, so compare clamp and ear clearance as well as softness.
The trade-offs are explicit. RTINGS reports a weaker microphone system than the Sony and says the Bose cannot be used passively. “Cannot be used passively” matters if you want audio after the battery is empty or if you prefer a cable-only listening setup. Choose it for active, charged use rather than assuming every wireless ANC headphone doubles as a conventional wired pair.
Bose explains two relevant listening modes. Quiet Mode uses ANC to reduce ambient sound; Aware Mode feeds selected outside sound through so you can stay aware of your surroundings. Switching between those modes is useful on a commute, but it does not remove the need to check your fit and local noise conditions.
Bose’s manufacturer testing, cited for an April 2025 condition, reports up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with Immersive Audio on. The stated test setup includes Quiet Mode, A2DP Bluetooth streaming and playback at 75 dB, along with other controlled conditions. Those figures describe Bose’s own test of the product, not a cross-brand comparison. Feature settings, volume and connection behavior can shorten real-world runtime.

AirPods Max 2 is the ecosystem choice rather than the obvious universal choice. RTINGS credits strong noise isolation and device switching, which can be valuable when your personal and work devices are compatible with Apple’s features.
There are practical costs. RTINGS says the headphones weigh more than the Sony, so compare them carefully if you are sensitive to neck weight during long sessions. It also describes the case as offering little protection; that is relevant for travel because the case is part of the carrying and storage solution, not an incidental accessory.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Some features require compatible Apple devices. If you regularly move between Apple and non-Apple hardware, list the features you actually need—switching, controls and any processing functions—then verify support on each device. Do not pay for ecosystem convenience you cannot use on your main computer or phone.
Battery figures: how to read them without being misled
| Model and source | Published figure | Condition or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 — RTINGS, 2026 guide | Over 31 hours | RTINGS’ assessment with ANC on. |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 — What Hi-Fi?, 2026 guide | 30 hours | Listed battery specification; the guide’s measurement method is not presented as identical to RTINGS’ test. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — Bose, cited April 2025 test condition | Up to 24 hours | Immersive Audio off, with Quiet Mode, A2DP Bluetooth streaming, 75 dB playback and other controlled conditions. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — Bose, cited April 2025 test condition | Up to 18 hours | Immersive Audio on under the same published controlled-test context. |
Battery claims are not interchangeable measurements. Runtime changes with ANC, immersive or spatial processing, codec, volume, calls, temperature and firmware. If you need a minimum number of hours, compare figures made under similar conditions and leave margin for the settings you actually use.
Codecs, compatibility and wired use
Codec support
The XM6 is the only model in the supplied comparisons with a named codec list: SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 in What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide, with LDAC also cited by RTINGS. SBC and AAC provide broad compatibility; LDAC and LC3 are additional options when the source device and operating system support them. A codec is a connection format, not a guarantee of preferred sound, and it cannot compensate for an uncomfortable fit or poor seal.
Device switching
Switching behavior is a practical ecosystem feature. RTINGS specifically credits AirPods Max 2 with device switching, while the cited comparisons do not establish an equivalent feature set for the other models. If you move between phone and computer several times a day, check the exact switching behavior on your devices rather than assuming all premium Bluetooth headphones work the same way.
Wired and passive operation
Home listeners should decide whether a cable-only path matters. The Bose assessment explicitly says the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) cannot be used passively. The supplied material does not establish passive-operation behavior for the Sony or Apple models, so verify that capability in the exact regional specification if it is a requirement.
Comfort and fit checklist
Comfort is not a minor preference. It determines whether you can use the headphones for the session length you bought them for.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Pad depth: Check whether your ears touch the inner surface. The XM6’s shallow earpads are the specific concern identified by RTINGS.
- Clamp: Notice pressure at the temples and jaw after an extended session, not only during a quick fit check.
- Headband contact: Compare how the band distributes pressure. RTINGS finds the Bose padding more generous than Sony’s.
- Seal: Gaps caused by glasses, hair or an incorrect cup position can weaken passive isolation and ANC.
- Heat and movement: Walk, turn your head and sit through a full listening block. A stable fit is more valuable than a loose fit that shifts.
- Weight: AirPods Max 2 is reported as heavier than the Sony, a meaningful difference for long sessions.
Portability, cases and travel decisions
For travel, evaluate the entire carrying system: folding or storage shape, case protection, charging connector and how easily you can switch between isolation and awareness. The AirPods Max 2 case is specifically described by RTINGS as offering little protection, so frequent travelers should account for that rather than judging only the headphones.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
USB-C charging is listed for the Sony by What Hi-Fi?. That can simplify packing if your other devices already use the same cable, but it does not by itself indicate charging speed or battery life. Confirm the supplied accessories and local package contents because bundles can vary.
Lower-cost ways to get the right result
What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide includes budget choices and notes that discounted preceding generations can remain worth considering. A previous generation may deliver the comfort, isolation or codec support you need at a lower current price, but discounts and stock are regional and temporary. Compare the exact model, warranty, firmware support and condition rather than assuming an older name is equivalent to the current one.
Use a simple threshold before shopping: identify the features you cannot compromise on, such as ANC for a noisy commute, a microphone for daily calls, Apple-specific switching or open-back leakage tolerance. Then compare older and newer models on those requirements. A cheaper headphone that fails your one non-negotiable is not a saving.

A step-by-step buying method
- Write down your main environment. Choose one primary setting—commute, air travel, calls, Apple-device use or quiet home listening—and a secondary setting.
- Choose the construction. Select portable wireless over-ears for mobility, closed-back headphones when leakage must be contained, or wired/open-back headphones for a private room where portability is secondary.
- Set your comfort limit. Measure success by pad depth, clamp, headband pressure, weight and session length. Treat the XM6 pad-depth warning and the Bose padding comparison as reasons to try both fits when possible.
- Rank isolation and awareness. Decide whether ANC, passive isolation or an Aware/transparency mode is most important. ANC and Aware are different functions, not interchangeable labels.
- Check communication needs. If calls are frequent, give the Sony’s documented microphone and call-quality assessments more weight than a general sound or ANC ranking; note the Bose microphone caveat.
- Verify device support. Match codecs and ecosystem features to every important source device. The Sony’s listed SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 support is useful only when your source supports those options; AirPods Max 2 features may require compatible Apple hardware.
- Validate battery under your settings. Compare the published condition with your expected ANC, immersive-audio and volume settings. Keep a margin instead of planning around an “up to” number.
- Inspect portability. Check the case, storage protection, charging connector and whether the headphones remain practical in your bag. The AirPods Max 2 case limitation is especially relevant here.
- Confirm local terms before paying. Prices, stock, regional availability, firmware and lineups change. Verify the current model and return conditions in your market.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by a universal ranking
A guide can name a best over-ear model while still identifying comfort and microphone trade-offs. Treat the ranking as a starting point, then filter it through your environment and fit.
Comparing battery numbers from different tests as if they were identical
The Sony’s “over 31 hours” RTINGS result and What Hi-Fi?’s 30-hour specification are not one standardized test. Bose’s 24-hour and 18-hour figures include stated mode, streaming and volume conditions. Keep each qualification attached to its number.
Assuming ANC replaces a good seal
ANC electronics cannot fix every gap around the ear. Reposition the cups, check pad depth and consider another shape if outside sound remains intrusive.
Buying open-back headphones for a shared room
Open-back designs leak sound. Reserve them for a setting where other people and nearby microphones will not be disturbed, or choose a closed-back design.
Ignoring ecosystem limits
AirPods Max 2 can be compelling inside a compatible Apple setup, but RTINGS says some features require compatible Apple devices. Map your actual hardware before relying on ecosystem benefits.
Paying for features you will not use
If you listen mainly at home beside a quiet desk, a wired or open-back headphone may be a better match than paying for ANC and travel features. If you need a cable-only option, avoid assuming the Bose can provide passive playback.
Bottom line
Start with the environment, not the brand or a headline ranking. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the most versatile premium wireless starting point in the current guides, provided its shallow earpads suit you. Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) when generous padding and ANC are more important than microphone strength or passive operation. Choose AirPods Max 2 when compatible Apple-device switching and ecosystem features justify its extra weight and lightly protective case. For quiet home listening, a wired or open-back design can be the more appropriate category altogether.
