For a Windows gaming PC, use the monitor’s native 3840 × 2160 resolution and the highest refresh rate that Windows actually offers at that resolution. Enable variable refresh rate (VRR) for games, turn on HDR only for an HDR-capable display and calibrate it with Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app, and leave OLED response processing at the monitor’s normal or default gaming setting unless that model’s manual says otherwise. A 240 Hz specification is not a universal target: the monitor, graphics card, input port and cable determine which modes are available.
The recommended starting configuration
These settings are a reliable baseline rather than a universal preset. Confirm every value on your own monitor, because OLED panel type, firmware, input bandwidth, room lighting and the manufacturer’s on-screen display (OSD) can change the result.
| Setting | Starting value | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows resolution | 3840 × 2160 (native) | Only use another resolution when a game cannot run acceptably at 4K or you deliberately prefer a lower-resolution performance mode. |
| Refresh rate | Highest rate listed for 3840 × 2160 | Choose a lower rate if your cable, GPU, port or game cannot sustain the desired mode reliably. |
| VRR | On in the monitor, GPU software and supported games | Turn it off temporarily to diagnose flicker, compatibility problems or a game-specific bug. |
| Windows HDR | On when playing HDR games or viewing HDR video | Turn it off for SDR-only work if the desktop looks incorrect after balancing SDR brightness. |
| HDR calibration | Run Windows HDR Calibration full screen | Repeat after changing the display, HDR mode, firmware, room lighting or connection. |
| OLED response/overdrive | Normal, Standard or the manufacturer’s default | Use a different option only when the exact model’s manual explains its behavior and trade-offs. |
| Monitor tone mapping | Follow the exact model guide; avoid stacking extra processing during calibration | Use a preferred game or creator mode after calibration only if you understand that it changes the intended image. |
Windows reports the modes supported by the connected display, and the list can change when you change resolution. Microsoft’s instructions are in Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows.
Why native 4K and refresh rate must be set together
A monitor’s headline refresh rate is not automatically the active setting. A display may advertise 240 Hz, but that rate could require a particular input, cable, color format or firmware mode. Windows can also show a rate that belongs to a different resolution. Always select the resolution first, then verify the rate that remains available.

Set the Windows display mode
- Connect the monitor to a GPU output that is rated for your intended 4K refresh rate. Check the monitor and graphics-card specifications before buying a new cable; if the mode is missing, the existing cable may not be the cause.
- Open Settings → System → Display and select the 4K OLED monitor if more than one display is connected.
- Open Advanced display. Confirm that the active desktop mode is 3840 × 2160, then choose the highest refresh rate offered for that mode.
- Accept the change and check that Windows continues to report the same resolution and rate. If a rate is marked incompatible or disappears, do not force it by lowering image quality elsewhere; investigate the port, cable, driver and monitor input mode.
- Open each game’s display or graphics menu and select the same monitor, 3840 × 2160 resolution and desired refresh rate. Some games keep their own mode instead of following the Windows desktop.
Microsoft notes that Advanced display also exposes whether the connected display supports variable refresh. The GPU’s maximum output, the monitor’s input standard and the cable’s bandwidth can each become the limiting factor. A high-refresh 4K OLED therefore needs a complete signal path, not just a high number printed on the monitor box.
Should you use VRR on a 4K OLED gaming monitor?
Yes, enable VRR when your frame rate varies. VRR lets the display adjust its refresh timing to the game’s current frame rate, reducing tearing and uneven pacing. It is most useful when a game moves above and below a fixed refresh target rather than staying locked to one value.
Enable VRR at every required layer
- Turn on the monitor’s VRR, Adaptive-Sync or similarly named option in its OSD.
- Enable the corresponding variable-refresh option in your GPU control panel, if the driver exposes one.
- In the game, enable VRR, Adaptive-Sync or the game’s recommended display-sync option when available.
- Return to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and verify that Windows recognizes VRR support.
Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a separate operating-system feature. Microsoft says DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game refuses to run at the rate you selected, disable DRR, retest, and then decide whether the battery-saving or desktop benefits are worth leaving it off.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

OLED monitors can show brightness or luminance changes when frame rate repeatedly crosses the VRR range. First update the monitor firmware and GPU driver, then test the game at a steadier frame-rate cap inside the display’s supported VRR range. If the OSD includes a VRR-flicker control, use the setting described by the manufacturer; do not assume that a control with the same name behaves identically on another model. Temporarily disabling VRR is a diagnostic step, not a better universal setting.

Best HDR settings for an OLED gaming monitor
HDR should be configured for the actual display and the room in which you use it. OLED pixels can produce extremely dark blacks and vivid highlights, but the perceived black level changes with ambient light and the panel’s surface treatment. A single brightness number cannot be “best” for every room or OLED type.
Turn on HDR in Windows
- Open Settings → System → Display and select the OLED display.
- Open HDR and confirm that Windows identifies the display as HDR-capable.
- Turn on Use HDR for that display. Do not assume that every connected monitor supports HDR games and apps.
- Leave the display in its intended HDR picture mode while you calibrate. If you later change the monitor’s HDR mode or tone-mapping behavior, check the calibration again.
Microsoft’s current instructions are in HDR settings in Windows. Windows may make SDR content look too dim or too bright while HDR is enabled; use the SDR/HDR balance control in the HDR settings rather than arbitrarily raising the monitor’s brightness.
Run Windows HDR Calibration
- Install or open the free Windows HDR Calibration app and run it full screen on the OLED display.
- Use the black-detail pattern to set the darkest level at which details remain visible. Stop when the pattern element intended to disappear is no longer visible; do not lift black levels simply to make every patch appear.
- Use the highlight-detail pattern to set the brightest level without retaining clipping detail that the pattern says should disappear.
- Set the display-maximum-brightness pattern according to the app’s instructions and your panel’s real capability.
- Adjust saturation conservatively. Excessive saturation produces vivid but inaccurate colors, especially in games mastered for a standard HDR range.
- Finish the calibration, then test an HDR game and a familiar HDR video. Repeat the process if the display, HDR mode, firmware or normal viewing environment changes.
Microsoft explains the three pattern stages in Calibrate your HDR display using the Windows HDR Calibration app. Perform the calibration under the room lighting you normally use. Bright daylight and a dark evening room can make the same OLED black level appear very different.
Do not stack hidden tone mapping on top of calibration
Many monitors provide HDR tone mapping, dynamic contrast, peak-brightness and color-processing controls. These can be useful for a preferred game look, but they alter the signal that Windows calibrated. Microsoft warns that additional monitor post-processing can interfere with calibration behavior. If the app’s patterns behave unexpectedly, disable extra processing, calibrate, and then re-enable one option at a time so you know what changed.

OLED response-time settings: why “Fastest” is usually not the answer
OLED pixels switch states extremely quickly. In RTINGS’ review of the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3, the measured response was described as near instantaneous. That result is a model-specific test, not a promise that every 4K OLED behaves identically, but it explains why LCD-style aggressive overdrive is unnecessary.
Use the normal response option first
Start with Normal, Standard or the monitor’s default gaming response setting. An LCD overdrive mode designed to prevent slow pixel transitions can create overshoot or other artifacts on an OLED. Menu names such as Fast, Faster and Fastest do not have a consistent meaning across manufacturers.
Consult the exact user guide before changing response behavior, OLED care, uniform brightness, panel refresh or compensation cycles. The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM user guide illustrates how model-specific OSD categories can be; it is not a universal preset for every 4K OLED.

- Confirm that Windows and the game are actually running at the intended refresh rate; a 60 Hz fallback can look like a response-time problem.
- Check that the game’s frame pacing is stable and VRR is operating inside its supported range.
- Inspect the cable, input mode and GPU driver if the refresh rate changes unexpectedly.
- Use the monitor’s manual for any OLED compensation or panel-refresh prompt. Do not repeatedly force a panel-care cycle as a substitute for troubleshooting.
Room lighting changes perceived OLED blacks
OLED’s self-emissive pixels can turn off for deep black, but the room can reflect from the screen surface and make black areas appear gray. RTINGS reports that the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 delivers deep blacks and vivid highlights in a dark room, while ambient light raises the apparent black level. This is why a calibration that looks perfect at night may seem less contrasty beside a bright window.

- For a dark gaming room, preserve shadow detail without lifting blacks and use the monitor’s calibrated HDR mode.
- For a bright room, control reflections first with placement or indirect lighting. Raising brightness cannot remove reflected light and may reduce highlight headroom.
- Judge HDR with the lighting you normally use, not under a temporary showroom-like setup.
The panel type and coating also matter. QD-OLED, WOLED and newer generations can differ in color volume, highlight behavior and how reflections affect black appearance. Treat these as display characteristics rather than reasons to copy another owner’s brightness value.
Ports, cables and GPU checks before buying anything
If 4K at the advertised refresh rate is absent, verify the complete connection before purchasing an accessory.
- Read the monitor manual for which HDMI and DisplayPort inputs support the target resolution and refresh rate. Some inputs have different bandwidth or require an OSD input mode.
- Check the graphics card’s output specifications and install a current driver.
- Use a cable rated for the required bandwidth and length. A cable that works at 4K 120 Hz may not maintain a higher mode.
- In the monitor OSD, check input compatibility, high-bandwidth mode and any console or legacy compatibility setting.
- Reconnect the cable directly to the GPU rather than through a dock, adapter or receiver while testing.
- Return to Advanced display and confirm the active mode after every change.
Do not buy a cable solely because a monitor advertises 240 Hz. The correct requirement is the bandwidth of your specific monitor input, GPU output, resolution, refresh rate, color depth and HDR mode.

How to compare 4K OLED monitors for these settings
For a settings decision, compare the signal path and controls rather than the headline refresh number.
| Comparison | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 4K refresh capability | 3840 × 2160 at the maximum rate on the input you will use | A maximum rate that works only on one port or at another resolution may not fit your PC. |
| Input bandwidth | HDMI and DisplayPort limits, required OSD modes and cable rating | Bandwidth determines which resolution, refresh, HDR and color combinations appear. |
| VRR | Supported range, GPU compatibility and any flicker-control option | VRR is valuable for variable frame rates, but its behavior differs by firmware and panel. |
| HDR behavior | Highlight handling, tone-mapping choices and calibration interaction | Extra processing can change the calibrated image. |
| Panel and coating | OLED type, reflections and black appearance in your room | Ambient light can make identical black signals look different. |
| Care controls | Pixel-shift, panel-refresh and uniform-brightness policies | These controls affect long-term maintenance and brightness consistency. |
| Warranty terms | Coverage for image retention or burn-in and required care procedures | OLED ownership policies vary by manufacturer and region. |
Example: a 32-inch 4K 240 Hz QD-OLED
RTINGS’ ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 review, published July 7, 2026 and updated on its test bench October 7, 2026, describes a 32-inch 3840 × 2160 QD-OLED with a 240 Hz maximum refresh rate, VRR and near-instantaneous response. RTINGS’ 2026 HDR guide also notes HDMI and DisplayPort 2.1 bandwidth and warns that ambient light can raise the apparent black level. Those are facts about that model, not a universal requirement or a recommendation that every reader needs a 240 Hz monitor. See the full model review and the broader HDR gaming monitor guide for the test context.
Troubleshooting: symptom, likely cause and fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 240 Hz is not listed | Wrong resolution, input, cable, driver or monitor bandwidth mode | Set 3840 × 2160 first, test another rated GPU port and cable, update the driver, and check the monitor manual and OSD input mode. |
| Windows shows a lower rate after launching a game | The game uses its own display mode or DRR limits it | Match the game’s fullscreen settings to Windows and disable Dynamic Refresh Rate temporarily. |
| Screen tearing appears | VRR is off or not active | Enable VRR in the monitor, GPU software and game, then verify that the game is inside the supported range. |
| Brightness pulses during variable frame rates | OLED VRR flicker or unstable frame pacing | Update firmware and drivers, cap frame rate more consistently, try the model’s documented flicker control, or disable VRR to isolate the cause. |
| HDR looks gray or washed out | Incorrect Windows calibration, reflections, or conflicting tone mapping | Run HDR Calibration in normal room light, disable extra processing while calibrating, and check the game’s HDR mode. |
| Desktop SDR is too bright or dim with HDR on | Windows SDR/HDR balance is unsuitable | Adjust the SDR/HDR balance slider in Windows HDR settings instead of changing HDR peak controls blindly. |
| Motion has halos or artifacts | Aggressive response or overdrive mode | Return the OLED response setting to Normal or the documented default and confirm the refresh rate. |
| Black areas look gray in daylight | Reflected ambient light on the panel coating | Reduce reflections or change room lighting; a higher brightness setting cannot eliminate reflected light. |
A practical order for final tuning
Make one category of change at a time so you can identify what improved or degraded the image.
- Establish the physical connection: direct GPU output, compatible port and correctly rated cable.
- Set 3840 × 2160 and the highest supported refresh rate in Windows Advanced display.
- Match the game’s resolution and refresh rate, then confirm the mode after switching fullscreen or borderless.
- Enable VRR in the monitor, GPU and game; disable Windows DRR if it constrains the game’s maximum rate.
- Enable Windows HDR for HDR content and run Windows HDR Calibration full screen under normal room lighting.
- Set SDR/HDR balance and conservative saturation, then configure the monitor’s documented HDR mode and tone mapping.
- Leave OLED response processing at its normal/default value and use the model manual for panel-care controls.
- Test a familiar HDR game in both a dark and your normal room environment, changing only one OSD or Windows control at a time.
This sequence prevents a cable problem from being mistaken for a response-time issue and prevents tone mapping from being mistaken for a calibration failure.
Bottom line
The best general setup is native 3840 × 2160 at the highest rate your complete hardware path supports, VRR enabled for variable frame rates, Windows HDR calibrated with Microsoft’s three test patterns, and OLED response processing left at its normal setting. Treat HDR tone mapping, brightness, black appearance and OLED-care controls as model- and room-specific. Verify the active mode in Windows and in each game instead of trusting the monitor’s advertised maximum.
