There is no single best hardware wallet for every crypto holder. Choose one that supports the assets and signing workflow you use, lets you review transactions in a way you can understand, and offers a backup and recovery method you can manage safely. A hardware wallet protects signing keys on a device; its recovery backup is still a secret that can restore access to your assets.

How to choose a hardware wallet for seed-phrase safety

“Best” depends on how you use crypto and how you will protect the recovery backup—not on a universal security ranking. The product details below come from manufacturer documentation and comparisons, not independent hands-on testing. Treat feature and security descriptions as vendor claims, and check the current documentation for the exact model before buying.

Start with asset and app support

Check that the exact coins, tokens, networks, and transaction workflows you use are supported by both the device and its companion software. Support can differ by model or app and can change over time; a broad asset-support claim does not establish support for every token or workflow.

Decide what you need to review before signing

Consider whether the device has its own display and what transaction details it shows before you approve a signature. A display is useful only to the extent that it presents information you can meaningfully check. Vendor comparisons characterize screen and “clear signing” capabilities differently, so confirm what the particular model shows for your transactions.

Match connectivity to your signing routine

Devices can rely on USB, Bluetooth, companion applications, or more separated signing workflows. For example, Coinkite describes QR-code and MicroSD signing options for its Bitcoin-only products. These methods have different setup and transfer steps; choose one that fits your routine and that you can use correctly every time.

Choose a recovery format you can actually maintain

Recovery options are not interchangeable. Trezor documents BIP39 12- or 24-word backups and SLIP39 20-word backups, with options varying by model and setup. Ledger documents a standard 24-word recovery phrase. BitBox advertises a microSD backup workflow for the compared device. Understand where each recovery item is kept, how it is restored, and who could access it before you rely on it.

Hardware wallet options in the manufacturer documentation

This is a fit comparison, not a ranked test. The table summarizes what the cited manufacturers describe; “not stated” means the cited comparison did not establish that detail, not that the product lacks the feature.

Option Documented backup or recovery detail Documented workflow or feature What to verify
Trezor Safe 5 / Safe 7 Trezor says these models default to a 20-word SLIP39 single-share backup and support optional multi-share backups; its guide also lists BIP39 support. Not stated as a distinguishing signing workflow in the cited backup guide. Confirm setup options for the exact model and compatibility with any other recovery tools you may need. Trezor’s documentation says a multi-share backup can tolerate loss of some shares only while the recovery threshold remains met.
Ledger devices Ledger documents a standard 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger’s comparison describes multiple models, broad asset support, and on-device transaction review. Verify the exact assets, networks, and transaction details supported by the particular model and its software; the broad support description is a manufacturer claim.
BitBox02 Nova BitBox advertises a microSD backup workflow for its compared device. BitBox’s vendor comparison describes open-source firmware and app, a secure-chip design, and model-dependent app and asset support. Check that the specific app and assets you need are supported, and understand where the microSD backup is stored and who can access it. Transaction-review detail is not stated in the cited comparison.
COLDCARD Not stated in the cited comparison as a distinguishing recovery format. Coinkite presents its products as Bitcoin-only and describes QR-code or MicroSD signing options. Confirm that a Bitcoin-only workflow fits your needs and consult Coinkite’s current guidance about its reported July 2026 seed-generation firmware incident.

Trezor Safe 5 and Safe 7: consider the recovery format

Trezor’s guide says the Safe 5 and Safe 7 default to a 20-word SLIP39 single-share backup, with optional multi-share backup, and also lists BIP39 support. With SLIP39 multi-share recovery, losing some shares may be recoverable if enough shares remain to meet the threshold; losing too many makes recovery impossible. If compatibility with other recovery tools matters, confirm it before choosing a format.

Ledger: compare the specific model and asset workflow

Ledger’s comparison describes several models, broad asset support, and transaction review on the device, while its recovery guidance documents a 24-word phrase. These are manufacturer descriptions rather than independent comparative results. Check support for the exact assets and the transaction details the chosen model displays.

BitBox02 Nova: weigh the microSD workflow

BitBox’s comparison describes the BitBox02 Nova as having open-source firmware and an app, a secure-chip design, and a microSD backup workflow. The same comparison indicates that app and asset support varies across products. A convenient backup step does not remove the need to protect the backup from loss, theft, or disclosure.

COLDCARD: a Bitcoin-only signing workflow, with an incident caveat

Coinkite presents COLDCARD as Bitcoin-only and describes QR-code or MicroSD signing. Its comparison page also reports that a July 2026 firmware bug weakened seed generation, says attackers exploited it offline, and says the device was not remotely hacked. Coinkite says fixed firmware corrects future seed generation and that existing affected seeds require migration. The reviewed vendor disclosure does not establish the affected versions or incident scope independently. If you may be affected, use Coinkite’s current official notice and migration instructions rather than inferring your status from this summary.

How to protect the recovery backup

The backup is what can restore wallet access if a device is lost, damaged, or reset. Trezor says its backup can restore access in those situations; Ledger warns that someone who obtains the phrase may be able to access the associated assets. Protect the backup as a secret, independently of how well the hardware device is protected.

  • Keep the recovery words offline and private. Do not photograph or screenshot them, email them, put them in cloud storage, or enter them on a computer or phone. Follow the wallet’s own device-based recovery instructions.
  • Write each word exactly as shown and in the correct order. Verify that the record is legible and correct using the manufacturer’s procedure.
  • Store the physical backup so it is protected from damage and from unauthorized access. Anyone who gets a usable copy may be able to restore the wallet.
  • Do not disclose the words to someone claiming to be support. Trezor says its support will never ask for the wallet backup.

A metal backup can help protect a physical record against damage, but it does not protect against theft or disclosure: it remains a readable secret. Trezor names Keep Metal and Coinkite lists Seedplate. The cited documentation does not establish that either is universally preferable or that a metal backup is required.

What backup security figures do—and do not—tell you

Trezor’s undated guidance, accessed in 2026, reports 128-bit security for a 12-word BIP39 backup and for a 20-word SLIP39 backup, and 256-bit security for a 24-word BIP39 backup. It says the figures depend on the words being genuinely random. These are backup-entropy figures as reported by Trezor, not measures of total wallet security or guarantees against theft, phishing, or mistakes.

A practical selection checklist

  1. List the exact assets, networks, and transactions you need to support.
  2. Check the current model-specific asset and app support in the manufacturer’s documentation.
  3. Confirm what transaction information the device itself displays before you sign.
  4. Choose a connection and signing workflow you can reliably follow, including any QR-code, MicroSD, USB, Bluetooth, or companion-app steps relevant to the model.
  5. Read the recovery instructions before setup. Decide how you will keep the backup private, readable, and protected from physical damage.
  6. After setup, verify the backup using the manufacturer’s procedure. Do not create a digital copy or test recovery by entering the words on a computer or phone.
