Best overall for demanding games: the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X. It combines the strongest all-round Windows experience in PC Gamer’s 2026 testing with a Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, Radeon 890M graphics, 24 GB of memory, a 7-inch 1080p display and 1 TB of storage. Choose the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM if maximum benchmark performance matters more than price, or the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS if you prefer SteamOS and its console-like interface.

None of these handhelds turns every new AAA game into a high-settings, 60-fps console experience. Performance changes substantially with the game, resolution, quality preset, upscaling mode and whether the unit is plugged in. The figures below are review measurements, not guarantees for every title.

Which handheld PC should you buy?

Handheld Best for Key configuration cited in current guides What to know
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X Best overall Windows choice Ryzen Z2 Extreme, Radeon 890M, 24 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, 7-inch 1,920 × 1,080 display, Windows 11, 715 g Strong balance of performance, software compatibility and ergonomics. Tom’s Hardware reported $999.99; check the current configuration and price.
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM Performance-first buyers Configuration and price vary by listing; PC Gamer describes it as a premium, very expensive device Fastest in PC Gamer’s tested comparisons, but game-to-game leadership changes and value is weaker.
Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS SteamOS preference SteamOS handheld included in PC Gamer’s 2026 benchmark table Convenient Steam-focused software; measured performance trails the two Windows contenders in some tests and changes by title.
ASUS ROG Ally X (2024) RC72LA Previous-generation reference Ryzen Z1 Extreme, RDNA 3 graphics, 24 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 1,920 × 1,080 120 Hz display Do not confuse this 2024 model with the newer ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS’s 30 W Turbo figures were measured on AC power with a 65 W power-delivery source.

The short version is simple: buy the ROG Xbox Ally X for the least-compromised Windows package, the MSI for the highest results in the cited tests, and the Legion Go S when SteamOS is more important than peak frame rate.

What “demanding PC games” really means on a handheld

A modern handheld uses a low-power processor that combines CPU and integrated GPU resources. That design is efficient and portable, but it cannot match a desktop graphics card. A demanding game may therefore require a 1,920 × 1,080 or lower render resolution, a Medium preset, an upscaler such as the game’s built-in option, or a frame-rate target below 60 fps.

Average FPS is only one part of playability. A game that averages 40 fps can still feel uneven if its 1% lows fall sharply during traversal or combat. Memory bandwidth, shader compilation, driver support, thermal limits and the handheld’s power profile also matter. Compare results recorded under the same resolution, quality preset, upscaling state and power condition rather than relying on a processor name.

Why one game cannot rank every handheld

PC Gamer’s 2026 testing shows the problem clearly. The order changes between games and between native rendering and upscaling. A device that leads in one title may lose in another because of driver behavior, CPU demand, graphics settings or an engine-specific bottleneck. Treat each benchmark as evidence for that game and those settings, not as a universal performance score.

Real benchmark results from PC Gamer’s 2026 testing

The following numbers are average frame rates from PC Gamer’s controlled review conditions. They are not battery-life claims, market averages or promises of future performance.

Game and setting ROG Xbox Ally X Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM
Black Myth: Wukong, 1,920 × 1,080, Medium, no upscaling stated 26 fps 20 fps 33 fps
Black Myth: Wukong, 1,920 × 1,080, Medium, with upscaling 39 fps 30 fps 50 fps

These results illustrate why expectations must be realistic. At 1080p Medium without upscaling, none of the three reached a 60-fps average in this particularly demanding title. Enabling upscaling materially improved all three, but the MSI still led by a wide margin in this test. PC Gamer also reports Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn results, including average FPS and 1% lows at different settings and with or without upscaling; those conditions must remain attached to any figures taken from that guide.

How to interpret the numbers

  • Average FPS: useful for broad throughput, but it does not show stutter or frame-time spikes.
  • 1% lows: a better indication of how slow moments feel. Prefer a device with stronger lows when averages are close.
  • Upscaling: increases performance by rendering internally at a lower resolution, with a possible loss of image clarity or added artifacts.
  • Power state: plugged-in Turbo modes can draw substantially more power than battery profiles. Do not compare an AC result with an unplugged result as if they were equivalent.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X: best overall Windows handheld

PC Gamer names the ROG Xbox Ally X its overall choice in the 2026 guide. Its listed hardware is a Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, Radeon 890M integrated graphics, 24 GB of memory, 1 TB of storage, a 7-inch 1,920 × 1,080 screen and Windows 11. The listed weight is 715 g.

Windows gives you the broadest compatibility with PC storefronts, launchers, anti-cheat systems, mods and existing game libraries. It also means dealing with desktop menus, updates, account prompts and occasional controller-mapping work. The Xbox-oriented handheld interface reduces some friction, but it does not turn Windows into a closed console operating system.

Who should choose it

  • Players who use more than Steam, including multiple PC launchers.
  • People who want a current, high-end Windows configuration without buying the most expensive niche option.
  • Anyone willing to use Medium settings and upscaling in the heaviest games.

Important power qualification

The ROG Xbox Ally X is not the same product as the ASUS ROG Ally X (2024) RC72LA. ASUS’s official page for the 2024 RC72LA documents a Ryzen Z1 Extreme, RDNA 3 graphics, 24 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD and a 1080p 120 Hz display. Its 30 W Turbo test used AC power and a 65 W power-delivery source. That plugged-in result should not be presented as typical battery performance, and those specifications should not be transferred to the newer Xbox-branded model.

MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM: the performance-first option

PC Gamer describes the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM as the fastest handheld in its tested comparison. In the Black Myth: Wukong test, it averaged 33 fps at 1080p Medium without upscaling and 50 fps with upscaling, ahead of the other two devices under those exact conditions.

That lead makes the MSI attractive for buyers who will trade value, size or convenience for every extra frame. It is not a blanket victory: PC Gamer’s broader Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn tables show why results depend on the title, settings and upscaling mode. The guide characterizes the device as a very expensive luxury purchase, so it is best treated as a performance pick rather than the default recommendation.

When the premium makes sense

  • You mainly play GPU-heavy releases and are comfortable using upscaling.
  • You accept a high purchase price to reduce compromises in demanding scenes.
  • You will compare 1% lows and your own game list instead of buying on one headline result.

Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS: choose the software experience

The Legion Go S SteamOS is the shortlist’s alternative for players who prefer SteamOS. A console-style library and suspend/resume workflow can be easier than managing a Windows desktop, particularly when nearly all of your games are in Steam.

SteamOS is not universal compatibility. Games that depend on unsupported launchers, certain anti-cheat implementations or Windows-only utilities may require workarounds or may not run. Check each important game before buying. PC Gamer’s table places the Legion Go S behind the ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI in the cited Black Myth: Wukong tests: 20 fps without upscaling and 30 fps with it at 1080p Medium.

Who benefits most

  • Steam-first players who value a focused interface over maximum launcher flexibility.
  • People comfortable checking Proton compatibility and game-specific community fixes.
  • Buyers who accept lower results in some demanding games to avoid Windows desktop overhead.

Windows or SteamOS: decide before comparing specifications

Consideration Windows handheld SteamOS handheld
Storefronts Broad support for Steam and other PC launchers Best experience for Steam; other launchers may need compatibility layers or manual setup
Game compatibility Usually closest to a standard Windows gaming PC, subject to drivers and anti-cheat Depends on Proton support, anti-cheat status and launcher behavior
Interface More desktop management and update prompts More console-like navigation and suspend/resume
Tuning Extensive vendor and Windows-level controls Streamlined controls, with some advanced tweaks requiring extra steps

Neither operating system guarantees better frame rates by itself. The game, driver, power limit and rendering settings remain decisive.

How to choose for your own game library

  1. List your hardest-to-run games. Include upcoming releases you genuinely intend to play, not only esports or older titles.
  2. Check storefront and anti-cheat requirements. Decide whether Windows is necessary or whether SteamOS supports the games you care about.
  3. Set a target. A locked 30 fps, a 40–45 fps range or 60 fps requires different settings and hardware headroom.
  4. Compare matched tests. Use the same resolution, quality preset and upscaling state. Give extra weight to 1% lows when available.
  5. Choose a power strategy. Decide whether you mostly play near an outlet or carry the device. High-wattage Turbo results are not battery results.
  6. Check physical fit. A 7-inch screen, 715 g weight, control layout and grip shape affect long sessions as much as a small FPS difference.
  7. Verify the exact listing. Confirm processor, memory, storage, operating system and regional keyboard or charger details before paying.

Settings that make demanding games playable

Start with a stable frame-rate target

Choose a target the hardware can sustain rather than chasing a peak number. A consistent 30 or 40 fps often feels better than a fluctuating 45–60 fps. Use an in-game limiter or the handheld’s control software after observing demanding scenes, not just the opening benchmark.

Use upscaling deliberately

Upscaling produced large gains in PC Gamer’s Black Myth: Wukong results. Begin with the game’s quality-oriented mode, then lower the internal resolution only if necessary. Inspect foliage, hair, distant geometry and motion for shimmer or ghosting; a faster image is not automatically a better image.

Reduce the settings that cost the most

Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, global illumination and crowd density before cutting texture quality when memory allows. Texture reductions can be more visible on a handheld screen, while shadow and volumetric changes often recover more performance. The best order varies by engine, so change one group at a time.

Keep drivers and firmware current

Integrated graphics performance and game compatibility can change with firmware, graphics drivers and operating-system updates. Update through the manufacturer’s supported tools, then retest a game after major changes. Keep a known-good profile if a new driver introduces stutter or a launch problem.

Power, heat and battery expectations

Handheld performance is constrained by a shared power and thermal budget. Higher wattage can raise frame rates but increases heat, fan noise and battery drain. The ASUS 2024 RC72LA example demonstrates why test conditions matter: its documented 30 W Turbo result used AC power and a 65 W source.

No comparable battery-runtime ranking was established for the three current shortlist devices. Runtime varies with game, brightness, frame-rate cap, wattage, operating system and battery health, so do not select a model on an unsupported hours claim. If you mostly play demanding games away from an outlet, prioritize a realistic power profile and a stable cap over a short-lived maximum-performance mode.

Storage, memory and display considerations

Storage

The ROG Xbox Ally X configuration listed by PC Gamer includes 1 TB of storage. Large current games can consume a substantial portion of that capacity, especially after patches and optional high-resolution texture packs. Confirm whether the model supports the expansion method you plan to use and whether the operating system or launcher imposes limitations before buying an accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory

The ROG Xbox Ally X and the 2024 ROG Ally X configuration cited here both list 24 GB of RAM. Integrated graphics share system memory with the CPU, so memory capacity and bandwidth affect more than multitasking. Do not assume that two handhelds with similarly named processors have identical memory behavior.

Screen

A 1,920 × 1,080 panel is demanding for integrated graphics at native resolution, which is why 720p or an internal render scale can be sensible in heavy games. Refresh-rate support does not create extra performance: a 120 Hz display can show a high-refresh desktop, but the game still needs to render enough frames to benefit.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

  • Mistake: buying from a CPU name. Fix: compare your actual games at matched settings and include 1% lows.
  • Mistake: treating an AC Turbo result as portable performance. Fix: record whether each test used wall power, the wattage limit and the charger rating.
  • Mistake: assuming SteamOS runs every PC game. Fix: check Proton and anti-cheat compatibility for each essential title.
  • Mistake: expecting 1080p High at 60 fps in every new AAA release. Fix: plan for Medium settings, upscaling and a 30–45 fps target in the heaviest games.
  • Mistake: confusing the 2024 ROG Ally X with the ROG Xbox Ally X. Fix: verify the complete model name, processor generation and operating system on the listing.
  • Mistake: using an old price or configuration. Fix: recheck the retailer’s current stock, regional price, memory, storage and included charger immediately before purchase.

How these recommendations were established

PC Gamer’s guide, updated July 26, 2026, supplies the controlled game comparisons and names the ROG Xbox Ally X as its overall recommendation, the MSI as the performance leader in its testing and the Legion Go S SteamOS as a current alternative. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 guide supplies category recommendations and a reported $999.99 price for the ROG Xbox Ally X; prices and availability can change. ASUS’s official ROG Ally X (2024) page supplies the prior-generation specifications and AC test conditions. AMD’s handheld overview provides partner-category context, but it is not a substitute for game-specific testing.

Before publishing or purchasing, verify firmware, operating-system support, model numbers, regional configurations, retailer stock and current pricing. A new driver, BIOS update or product revision can change the practical result.
