For the broadest access to demanding PC games, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X/X20 is the strongest all-round choice among the models covered here. PC Gamer’s July 26, 2026 guide names the ROG Xbox Ally X its overall pick and the regular ROG Xbox Ally its budget pick. Those are editorial judgments, not guarantees for every game. Steam Deck OLED is easier to use if your library is mainly Steam and you value SteamOS, while Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 SteamOS is aimed at players who want a much larger screen and detachable controllers.
The right handheld depends on the games you actually play, launcher and anti-cheat support, the frame rate you consider acceptable, screen size, battery expectations, weight and the price of the exact regional configuration. Peak specifications alone do not predict sustained performance.
Quick picks
Best overall for Windows flexibility and AAA games: ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X/X20
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the most capable general-purpose option in this group when you need Windows 11, multiple launchers and a larger performance margin for demanding games. PC Gamer’s 2026 configuration lists 24GB of memory, 1TB of storage, Windows 11 and a 715g weight. ASUS’s US product page identifies the current X20 (2026) model and shows an ASUS Store price of $1,299.99; that is a volatile listing for the page’s configuration, not a guaranteed street price or universal price.

Best lower-cost entry: ASUS ROG Xbox Ally
The non-X Ally is PC Gamer’s budget recommendation. It has a 7-inch 1080p IPS display and a chassis the guide describes as comfortable. Its Ryzen Z2 A platform is less suitable for demanding games at native resolution; expect to reduce detail, use upscaling or accept lower frame rates in heavier AAA releases. The exact price and configuration vary by region and were not stated in the cited material.
Best for a console-like Steam library: Valve Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED remains the simplest choice when most of your games are verified or known to work on SteamOS. PCGamesN highlights the OLED screen and console-style SteamOS interface, but also notes limits in raw performance and resolution, difficulty with some Epic Games titles and problems with competitive games whose anti-cheat systems do not support the platform. Compatibility is game-specific and can change after updates.
Best for a large display and detachable controls: Lenovo Legion Go 2 SteamOS
Windows Central reports that the Legion Go 2 SteamOS combines an 8.8-inch OLED panel with detachable controllers. Its starting price was reported as higher than the Xbox Ally X, but the exact figure and release status are time-sensitive. The comparison did not yet include battery benchmarking, so neither the larger chassis nor its battery capacity should be treated as proof of longer runtime.

Why handheld gaming PCs are not interchangeable
A handheld PC is a small computer with integrated controls, a built-in display and a battery. The operating system determines which launchers and anti-cheat services work without workarounds. The processor, power limit, cooling system and memory determine how much performance can be sustained. Screen resolution changes the rendering workload, while battery size, brightness and power settings determine how long that performance lasts away from an outlet.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Two devices can advertise similar processor names yet deliver different results because they use different wattage limits, cooling designs and firmware. Conversely, a lower-resolution screen can make a modest device feel faster because the GPU renders fewer pixels. Treat a specification sheet as a description of hardware, not as a promised frame rate.
Choose the operating system before the hardware
Windows: maximum launcher and peripheral flexibility
Windows 11 gives the Ally models access to the Windows versions of Steam, other PC stores, subscription apps, mod managers and anti-cheat components. It is the safer choice if your library spans several launchers or includes competitive games with strict Windows-only anti-cheat. The trade-off is a desktop interface designed for a mouse and keyboard. You may need to update several launchers, dismiss desktop notifications and configure controller mappings yourself.
SteamOS: a simpler console-style experience
SteamOS boots into a controller-friendly interface and keeps most routine tasks inside Steam. That simplicity is the Steam Deck OLED’s main advantage and also the reason the Legion Go 2 SteamOS is attractive. The cost is narrower compatibility. Proton translates many Windows games successfully, but a game can stop working after an update, and anti-cheat support is controlled by the game developer rather than by the handheld maker.
Before choosing SteamOS, list every must-play title and check its current Steam compatibility status and the publisher’s anti-cheat support information. Do not assume that a single successful report applies to every update, game mode or multiplayer service.
Performance: what “play AAA games” should mean
Modern AAA games often require compromises on a handheld. A practical target is a stable frame rate at a sensible power limit, not the highest possible settings. Start with the handheld’s native resolution or a lower render resolution, select a medium or low preset, enable an in-game upscaler when available and cap the frame rate if that produces steadier pacing. A locked 30 frames per second can feel better than a fluctuating 45.

A published benchmark, with its limits
PC Gamer tested Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p on the Medium preset. It reported these results in its 2026 guide:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Device | Average FPS | 1% low |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally X | 26 FPS | 19 FPS |
| Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS | 20 FPS | 17 FPS |
| MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM | 33 FPS | 16 FPS |
These numbers describe one game, one resolution, one preset and the test conditions used by PC Gamer. They do not predict performance in another title, at another wattage or on the Legion Go 2 SteamOS. The higher average for the MSI model also came with the lowest 1% low among the three, illustrating why average FPS alone is not enough.
Display, battery and ergonomics: the compromises you feel every day
Display size and pixel load
The 7-inch Ally screen is easier to fit in a bag and asks the GPU to drive fewer pixels than a larger panel at the same resolution. The X20’s 7.4-inch OLED adds contrast and HDR capability according to ASUS. The Legion Go 2 SteamOS’s 8.8-inch OLED gives interfaces and strategy games more room, but a larger device can be harder to hold for long sessions and may draw more power at high brightness.
VRR, listed for the X20, can smooth uneven frame delivery by matching the panel’s refresh behavior to the game’s output. It cannot create extra frames; it mainly reduces visible tearing and judder within the panel’s supported range.
Battery capacity is not runtime
An 80Wh battery is a capacity figure, not a number of gaming hours. Runtime changes with game load, frame-rate cap, screen brightness, refresh mode, wireless radios and fan behavior. ASUS says the X20’s cooling system directs air to the processor through a new internal channel and high-flow fans; that is a manufacturer description, not an independent thermal or battery test.

The Legion Go 2 SteamOS comparison had no battery benchmark, so do not infer superior endurance from its larger body. For any model, plan demanding games around a charger or a power bank that supports the handheld’s required USB-C power profile.
Weight, grip and controls
PC Gamer lists the ROG Xbox Ally X configuration at 715g. Weight is only part of comfort: grip shape, button reach, fan noise and how far the controls sit from the screen matter just as much. Detachable controllers on the Legion Go 2 SteamOS can help with certain desk or tabletop positions, but they add moving parts and do not automatically make the device comfortable in bed or on a train.
Storage and expansion planning
AAA installs can consume a large share of a handheld’s internal drive. The PC Gamer configuration for the ROG Xbox Ally X includes 1TB, which is more practical than a small entry-level drive if you keep several large games installed. Steam Deck and other models are sold in multiple storage configurations, so confirm the exact capacity before ordering.
A compatible microSD card or SSD can extend space, but compatibility is model-specific. Verify the supported card type, maximum capacity, speed requirements, physical fit and whether opening the chassis affects warranty coverage. Storage expansion helps with capacity; it does not increase GPU performance or fix an unsupported anti-cheat system.
Setup checklist for a new Windows handheld
- Install updates first. In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, install firmware and driver updates offered for the exact model, then restart.
- Update the control software. Use the handheld maker’s supplied control application to check BIOS, chipset, graphics and controller firmware. Record the original performance profile before changing advanced settings.
- Install only the launchers you need. Sign in to Steam and any other stores required by your library. Enable two-factor authentication and keep recovery codes somewhere other than the device.
- Set a repeatable power profile. Choose a wattage or performance mode, brightness level and frame-rate cap that you can use for comparisons. Changing all three at once makes troubleshooting difficult.
- Configure each game individually. Begin with the game’s recommended handheld preset, then adjust texture quality, shadows, volumetric effects and upscaling. Keep textures high only when memory and frame pacing remain stable.
- Test on battery and AC power. Some handhelds change their power limits when unplugged. Test a demanding scene for several minutes in both conditions before assuming a setting is reliable.
Setup checklist for SteamOS
- Update SteamOS and restart. Apply the stable update offered by the device before downloading a large game.
- Check the game’s current compatibility information. Look for verified status, community reports and the publisher’s anti-cheat policy. Treat reports as time-sensitive.
- Install and test one must-play title. Confirm that the launcher, save synchronization, controller layout and multiplayer login all work before filling the drive.
- Use per-game settings. Set a frame-rate cap, refresh mode and upscaling option for each demanding game rather than relying on one global profile.
- Keep a Windows alternative in mind. If a title depends on unsupported anti-cheat or a launcher that does not behave under Proton, no amount of graphics tuning will make it a dependable SteamOS game.
Compatibility checklist before you buy
- Write down your five most important games, including multiplayer titles and games bought outside Steam.
- Identify the required launcher for each game and whether it has a native handheld-friendly workflow.
- Check the current anti-cheat support statement for every competitive game.
- Look for reports at the exact resolution and frame-rate target you want; a desktop benchmark at 1440p is not a handheld benchmark.
- Confirm whether mods, third-party overlays, cloud saves and controller remapping are essential to your play style.
- Decide whether you can accept reduced settings, upscaling or a 30-FPS cap in the heaviest games.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game runs, but frame rate is unstable
Lower shadows, volumetric effects and crowd density first; these settings often cost more performance than texture quality. Enable an upscaler, cap the frame rate below the device’s usual peak and retest the same scene. If the problem appears only on battery, compare the selected power profile with the AC profile.

A SteamOS game will not launch after an update
Restart the handheld, update SteamOS and verify the game files. If the title uses anti-cheat, check the developer’s current support statement before changing compatibility tools. A previously working Proton configuration can require a new version or can become unsupported after a game update.
A Windows launcher is difficult to control
Complete the launcher’s desktop sign-in and update steps with a touch screen or a small keyboard, then create a shortcut in the handheld’s game library. Keep the launcher updated; forcing a game through an old shortcut can produce login and overlay errors.
The device becomes hot or loud
Move to a hard, unobstructed surface, clean vents according to the manufacturer’s instructions and use a lower power mode or frame-rate cap. Do not block intake vents with bedding or a case. If temperatures remain abnormal after updates and unobstructed testing, use the manufacturer’s support process rather than opening the device while it is under warranty.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is not enough storage
Remove completed games, move less frequently played titles to external storage where supported and verify expansion compatibility before buying a card or SSD. Do not assume that every microSD card or SSD fits every handheld.
Which handheld should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X/X20 if…
- You need Windows launchers, mods or anti-cheat support with minimal workarounds.
- You want the largest performance margin among these named options for demanding games.
- You value the X20’s OLED, VRR and 80Wh specifications and can afford its listed US store price.
Choose the regular ROG Xbox Ally if…
- You want Windows flexibility at a lower tier than the X model.
- You are comfortable lowering settings or using upscaling in demanding AAA games.
- You prefer a 7-inch 1080p IPS display and a comfortable integrated chassis.
Choose Steam Deck OLED if…
- Your library is primarily Steam and you want the most console-like interface.
- You accept that some Epic, competitive and anti-cheat-protected games may not work reliably.
- You are willing to check compatibility per game instead of assuming every Windows title will run.
Choose Legion Go 2 SteamOS if…
- An 8.8-inch OLED screen and detachable controllers matter more than minimum size or a proven runtime figure.
- You are comfortable with SteamOS compatibility boundaries.
- You have checked the current price, release status and battery testing, which were time-sensitive or unavailable in the cited comparison.
Bottom line
There is no universal best handheld gaming PC. For a Windows-based device that can reach across launchers and gives demanding games the most headroom in this comparison, start with the ROG Xbox Ally X/X20 and verify the exact configuration and price. The regular ROG Xbox Ally is the value-oriented Windows alternative, Steam Deck OLED is the usability-first SteamOS choice, and Legion Go 2 SteamOS is the large-screen option. Whichever you choose, validate your own games, anti-cheat requirements, settings target and storage plan before treating a specification or benchmark as a promise.
