Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad before you join an input-restricted playlist. In Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), open Options & Career → Settings → Control, choose Gamepad, then configure each game separately under Options & Career → Settings → Controls → Configure Gamepad. This keeps controller matchmaking available on Xbox, PC and Steam Deck, while per-game layouts, look sensitivity and acceleration let you tune older Halo titles without forcing one control scheme everywhere.

The best starting settings for a controller

MCC does not have one objectively best sensitivity number. Players have different stick hardware, displays and aiming habits, and the official documentation confirms the relevant controls without prescribing a universal value. The reliable approach is to establish a consistent input device first, apply a familiar button layout, and change only one aiming variable at a time.

1. Choose Gamepad as the preferred input device

  1. From the MCC main menu, open Options & Career.
  2. Select Settings, then open the Control tab.
  3. Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad.
  4. Back out to the multiplayer menu and enter the playlist or browser you want.

This setting is especially important when you want input-restricted matchmaking. Halo Support describes the same path for Steam Deck and documents the preferred-input setting for Xbox and PC. If the game has recently restored defaults, verify this field again before searching.

2. Build a layout for each Halo game

  1. Open Options & Career → Settings → Controls → Configure Gamepad.
  2. Under Gameplay, select the specific Halo title you are about to play.
  3. Choose a button-layout preset that is close to your preferred scheme.
  4. Select Edit Layout, change individual actions, and save the result as a Custom layout.

MCC stores layouts per game. A scheme that feels natural in one title can put an important action on a different button in another, so make a small adjustment for every game you play rather than assuming one global map is identical across the collection.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

3. Tune look sensitivity and acceleration methodically

The Controls tab exposes controller look sensitivity and acceleration. Start at a moderate setting, then test in a private match or training session. Change either sensitivity or acceleration, not both, and play long enough to judge turning, tracking and fine corrections. Record a setting that works before making another change so you can return to it.

  • Sensitivity changes how far the reticle moves for a given stick movement.
  • Acceleration changes how quickly the look rate builds as the stick is held farther or longer.
  • A higher value can make turning faster but may make small corrections harder; a lower value can feel steadier but require more stick travel.

There is no official numeric “best” value. Use the same sensitivity while comparing games, then make a title-specific adjustment only when a game’s movement model or your chosen field of view makes it necessary.

How to avoid mouse-and-keyboard matchmaking

Input-based matchmaking is available for multiplayer on Xbox and PC. MCC uses Preferred Input Device when deciding which input-restricted search you can enter. Set it to Gamepad before opening the playlist; changing a controller layout alone does not guarantee that the preferred device is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the setting keeps reverting

On PC, the December 2020 patch notes state that using Restore to Default Settings for controls sets Preferred Input to Mouse & Keyboard. After any reset, return to Options & Career → Settings → Control and choose Gamepad again. Do this before matchmaking rather than after a queue fails.

Steam Deck input-restricted matchmaking

Halo Support’s known-issues guidance says Steam Deck players may need to change the preferred input device in-game to Gamepad before input-restricted matchmaking. The path is the same Control tab path listed above.

Steam Deck also has a documented anti-cheat launch-option issue. In the April 2023 notes, Halo Support records that selecting the Anti-Cheat Disabled option can launch the game with anti-cheat enabled. The listed workaround is to select the Anti-Cheat Disabled option when you need access to matchmaking and the Custom Game Browser. If matchmaking remains unavailable, close the game, apply that launch choice, restart, and confirm the in-game preferred device is still Gamepad.

Controller setup by platform

Xbox Series X|S

On Series X, MCC supports 4K output at 60 or 120 Hz. Series S supports 1080p output at 60 or 120 Hz. The console’s display mode affects the field-of-view control: MCC’s FOV slider ranges from 70 to 120 degrees when using 60 Hz output, while FOV is locked to the default at 120 Hz according to Halo Support’s Series X|S enhancements documentation.

If adjusting FOV is important to you, set the console and display to 60 Hz first, change FOV, and then decide whether the wider view is worth keeping instead of returning to 120 Hz. If low-latency 120 Hz play is your priority, expect the default FOV rather than an adjustable 70–120-degree range.

PC

Connect and test the controller before launching a playlist. Then set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad and create a per-game layout. PC players should be particularly careful with reset commands: the December 2020 controls patch behavior can silently switch the preferred input back to Mouse & Keyboard.

For a clean check, enter a private match after changing controls. Verify that every movement, weapon, equipment and menu action works before committing to a ranked or input-restricted search. If a controller stops responding immediately after a reset, the first recovery step is not reinstalling the game; it is reopening the Control tab, selecting Gamepad, and reapplying the saved Custom layout for the active title.

Steam Deck

Use the Control tab to select Gamepad before input-restricted matchmaking. Keep the anti-cheat launch-option workaround in mind if matchmaking or the Custom Game Browser is unavailable. Steam Deck players should also test the layout in the individual game selected under Gameplay, because MCC’s per-title configuration means a custom map saved for one game may not be the active map in another.

Cross-play, split-screen and campaign limits

Feature What MCC supports Important limitation or requirement
Xbox–PC online multiplayer Cross-play and input-based matchmaking are available for multiplayer on Xbox and PC. Set Preferred Input Device from the main-menu Settings screen when you need an input-restricted search.
Campaign cross-play Not available for Campaign and Campaign Playlists. Cross-platform multiplayer support does not extend to those campaign modes.
Local split-screen on Xbox Up to four players on one Xbox. Halo Support’s quick-start guide says each local player needs an Xbox controller.
Steam Deck input-restricted matchmaking Supported after choosing Gamepad. The anti-cheat launch-option issue may require the documented workaround before matchmaking or Custom Game Browser access.

In other words, an Xbox player can play supported online multiplayer with a PC player, but you cannot assume that the same cross-platform session rules apply to Campaign or Campaign Playlists. Local Xbox multiplayer is a separate setup: provide one Xbox controller per player, up to four on the console.

Display and field-of-view decisions on Series X|S

Choose the display mode before you tune controller aim. At 60 Hz, Series X|S exposes the 70–120-degree FOV range. At 120 Hz, the FOV is locked to the default. A wider FOV shows more of the environment but makes targets occupy fewer screen pixels; a higher refresh rate gives more frequent display updates but removes the FOV adjustment. Decide which trade-off fits your display and play style, then tune sensitivity while using that mode.

The FOV range and refresh-rate behavior come from Halo Support’s Xbox Series X|S enhancements documentation. They are not a promise that every television or monitor will accept every combination; confirm the output mode shown by your console and display.

Accessibility options beyond ordinary remapping

Standard remapping is only one supported route. MCC’s accessibility documentation points to the Xbox Adaptive Controller and the Copilot controller link option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox Adaptive Controller

The Adaptive Controller can provide an alternative physical interface for players who cannot comfortably use a conventional gamepad. Connect the compatible switches or peripherals, then map actions in MCC’s Configure Gamepad screen. Test the complete setup in a private match before entering matchmaking, because a control that works in the dashboard still needs to be assigned to an in-game action.

Copilot controller link

Copilot links two controllers so that two people can operate one player profile together. This can help a player share movement, aiming or other actions with a helper. Enable the link at the Xbox system level, then verify the combined input in MCC and save the appropriate per-game layout.

A practical comparison of controller setups

Setup Input consistency Input-restricted matchmaking Remapping Sensitivity and acceleration Display/FOV considerations Accessibility path
Xbox Series X Native console gamepad input. Available for supported multiplayer when Preferred Input Device is Gamepad. Per-game presets and Custom layouts. Controller look sensitivity and acceleration in Controls. 4K at 60/120 Hz; FOV 70–120 degrees at 60 Hz, default-locked at 120 Hz. Xbox Adaptive Controller and Copilot supported.
Xbox Series S Native console gamepad input. Available for supported multiplayer when Preferred Input Device is Gamepad. Per-game presets and Custom layouts. Controller look sensitivity and acceleration in Controls. 1080p at 60/120 Hz; the same 60 Hz FOV requirement applies. Xbox Adaptive Controller and Copilot supported.
Windows PC Depends on the connected controller and selected preferred device. Available when Gamepad is selected; a controls reset can switch it to Mouse & Keyboard. Per-game presets and Custom layouts. Controller look sensitivity and acceleration in Controls. Use the display mode you can maintain consistently while tuning. Use supported Xbox accessibility hardware where compatible, plus remapping.
Steam Deck Gamepad input through the handheld controls or a connected controller. Set Gamepad before searching; anti-cheat launch-option workaround may be required. Per-game presets and Custom layouts. Controller look sensitivity and acceleration in Controls. Handheld display settings should remain fixed while testing aim. Use remapping and compatible external accessibility hardware as appropriate.

Troubleshooting checklist

Matchmaking places you in the wrong input pool

  • Leave the queue and open Options & Career → Settings → Control.
  • Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad.
  • Confirm the controller is the device producing movement in the menus.
  • Restart the search after the setting is saved.

The controller stopped working after restoring defaults

  • Open the Control tab and check whether Preferred Input Device changed to Mouse & Keyboard.
  • Choose Gamepad again.
  • Open Configure Gamepad, select the active title under Gameplay, and select the saved Custom layout.
  • Use a private match to test every essential action before public matchmaking.

A custom layout works in one title but not another

Select the other game explicitly under Gameplay and edit or save its own Custom layout. MCC’s layouts are per game, so a correct map in one title is not proof that another title is using the same assignments.

FOV cannot be changed on Series X|S

Check the output refresh rate. Halo Support’s guidance requires 60 Hz for the FOV slider; at 120 Hz, FOV remains locked to the default. Change the console or display output to 60 Hz if you want to adjust the slider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Deck cannot open matchmaking or Custom Game Browser

Apply the April 2023 anti-cheat launch-option workaround, restart MCC, and then set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad in the Control tab. Both the launch option and the in-game input selection can matter.

Version and maintenance context

Halo Support lists updated game version 1.3073.0.0 in its 2022 documentation. A September 17, 2025 maintenance patch addressed a cross-platform matchmaking issue and may make searches faster for the Xbox PC and Microsoft Store versions; Xbox and Steam also required the associated download. Keep MCC updated on every platform in a cross-play group before diagnosing a queue problem, because different installations may not be on the same maintenance build.

A repeatable setup routine

  1. Update MCC on every platform involved in the session.
  2. Connect the controller or accessibility hardware and confirm it is recognized by the platform.
  3. Set Preferred Input Device to Gamepad in the main-menu Control tab.
  4. Choose the exact Halo game under Configure Gamepad → Gameplay.
  5. Apply a preset, edit it, and save a Custom layout.
  6. Set moderate look sensitivity and acceleration.
  7. Test in a private match, changing one aiming variable at a time.
  8. On Series X|S, choose 60 Hz if you need the 70–120-degree FOV slider; choose 120 Hz if you prefer the higher refresh mode and accept the default FOV.
  9. Start multiplayer matchmaking only after the test confirms that the intended controller and layout are active.
