Start with Halo: The Master Chief Collection and choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. For a first trip through the game franchise, play the six included campaigns in release order: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. This gives you the clearest introduction to the games without assuming that the television series and games share one continuous storyline.
What to play first after the Halo TV series
The most practical starting point is Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), beginning with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. MCC gathers six campaign games into one collection, so you do not have to assemble the early franchise entry by entry. Xbox’s post-show guide presents MCC as the natural next step for people who have finished the first season, while Halo Support specifically directs players who want release order to begin with Combat Evolved Anniversary.
This is a recommendation for entering the game franchise, not a claim that the next campaign continues the television plot. The show is a live-action adaptation set in the Halo universe. The games tell the franchise’s campaign stories from their own starting point and continuity. You will recognize broad ideas such as the 26th-century conflict between humanity and the Covenant, but you should not approach the first game expecting a scene-by-scene continuation of the series.
Why The Master Chief Collection is the best entry point
Six campaigns in one place
MCC combines Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo: Reach. That makes it the simplest way to follow the early campaign history without switching between unrelated releases or wondering which game belongs next.

A guided route rather than a random sequel
Starting with a later numbered game can give you polished action, but it also skips the foundation that makes the recurring characters, setting and conflict easier to understand. Combat Evolved Anniversary is the collection’s release-order starting point. From there, each subsequent campaign arrives in the sequence in which players originally encountered it.
It preserves the franchise’s historical context
Xbox describes MCC as a “history lesson” for the franchise. That wording is Xbox’s characterization, not an independent rating, but it captures why the collection works so well for a new viewer: you can see how the campaign saga develops instead of treating one later entry as an isolated action game.
Recommended order: release order
Use this route if you want the clearest onboarding experience and the order recommended by Halo Support.

| Play | Campaign | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary | The release-order starting point and the foundation for the game franchise. |
| 2 | Halo 2 | The next main campaign in the series’ release history. |
| 3 | Halo 3 | Continues the main numbered sequence after Halo 2. |
| 4 | Halo 3: ODST | A distinct campaign released after Halo 3; play it here to retain release context. |
| 5 | Halo: Reach | A prequel in story chronology, but released after ODST; its release placement is fifth in this route. |
| 6 | Halo 4 | The final campaign included in MCC’s six-game set and the next numbered entry after Halo 3. |
Release order is not a claim that every campaign is one uninterrupted plot. It is a way to experience the franchise’s introductions, callbacks and changes in presentation as its original audience did. For someone arriving from the show with no game-history context, that usually creates fewer surprises than beginning with a prequel and then moving forward and backward through the series.
How to start MCC without getting lost
- Install or launch Halo: The Master Chief Collection on a supported PC or Xbox platform. The official product description covers the integrated collection for PC and Xbox One; check the current store listing for your specific hardware and edition.
- Open the campaign section rather than selecting multiplayer or a playlist built from several games.
- Choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary as the first campaign.
- Play through that campaign before moving to Halo 2. Avoid jumping between campaigns simply because the collection displays them together.
- Continue through the six-game release route: Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, then Halo 4.
Collection menus can make every campaign look equally available, but availability is not the same as recommended sequence. If your goal is to understand the franchise after the series, treat MCC as a curated path rather than a buffet of disconnected missions.

What each campaign contributes to a newcomer’s journey
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
This is the strongest first game because it is both the release-order entry and the campaign foundation. It introduces the game version of the franchise’s central conflict and establishes the starting point for the Master Chief’s journey. Anniversary is the version to select inside MCC when you want the original campaign presented through the collection’s remastered edition.
Do not interpret “best first” as an objective quality ranking. The available official guidance establishes its position as the release-order starting point, not a universal judgment that it is the best Halo game for every player.
Halo 2
Move here after finishing Combat Evolved Anniversary. Playing the second campaign in release order lets you encounter its changes as a sequel rather than spoiling the franchise’s progression by starting with a later title.
Halo 3
Halo 3 follows Halo 2 in the recommended route. Keeping those numbered campaigns together makes the main sequence easy to remember and avoids the common mistake of treating the collection’s alphabetical or menu order as a story instruction.
Halo 3: ODST
Play ODST after Halo 3 for release-order context. It is a separate campaign entry in MCC, so its presence does not mean that you must insert it at an arbitrary point while playing the numbered games. The route here follows the collection’s release history rather than trying to reconstruct every event in fictional time.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Halo: Reach
Reach is the important exception to explain before you start: it is a prequel set shortly before the first game, but it was released later than ODST. That is why it appears fifth in the default route even though its events occur earlier in the fictional timeline.

Halo 4
Finish the MCC campaign sequence with Halo 4. It is the collection’s sixth campaign and the later numbered entry in this group. Saving it for last keeps the recommended route consistent and prevents a new player from starting in the middle of the game series.
Should you play Halo in release order or chronological order?
Both approaches are defensible; they answer different questions. Release order asks, “How did the game franchise introduce its campaigns to players?” Chronological order asks, “Which campaign’s fictional events happen first?” For a viewer coming directly from the television series, release order is the safer default because Halo Support explicitly recommends Combat Evolved Anniversary for that purpose.
| Route | Opening campaign | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | Combat Evolved Anniversary | First-time players who want the franchise’s original introduction. | You encounter Reach later even though it is set before the first game. |
| Chronological flavor | Halo: Reach | Players who care most about in-universe sequence and want the prequel first. | You begin with a later-produced prequel rather than the game that originally established the series. |
When chronological play makes sense
Choose Reach before Combat Evolved Anniversary only if the prequel distinction matters more to you than release-history context. After Reach, continue with Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 4. Describe this as a chronological-flavored route, not the one mandatory canon order: release and story chronology are different organizing principles.
Why release order remains the recommendation
A first-time player has no need to solve Halo’s timeline before playing the first campaign. Release order supplies a simple instruction, starts at the franchise’s original game foundation and lets later prequel context arrive when the collection expects it. It also avoids presenting Reach as if it were the game that originally introduced the universe.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you want to play only one Halo game
Choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. It is the most useful single-game sample because it is the official release-order starting point and gives you the campaign foundation on which the later MCC entries build.
That recommendation is about orientation, not a validated “best single game” ranking. The official material used for this guide does not provide comparative review scores or a measurement proving that one campaign is universally superior. If you finish it and want more, continue directly to Halo 2 rather than jumping to a later title chosen solely by its number.
How the TV series relates to the games
Shared universe, separate adaptation context
Amblin describes the show as a live-action scripted drama based on the Xbox franchise, set in 2552 during a human conflict and an encounter with the Covenant. Paramount’s official press description likewise frames it as a dramatization of the 26th-century human-Covenant conflict.
Those descriptions establish the show’s relationship to the broader Halo property, but they do not establish one shared continuity in which the first game is a direct episode-by-episode sequel to the television season. The useful expectation is simpler: the show adapts Halo’s universe, while the games let you explore the franchise’s campaign stories from their own starting point.

- Expect familiar high-level concepts, including humanity’s conflict with the Covenant and a 26th-century setting.
- Expect the game campaigns to introduce their own narrative structure and history.
- Do not assume that a television character’s circumstances, relationships or sequence of revelations will map directly onto the campaign you start.
- Use the show as a reason to explore Halo, not as a substitute for learning the games’ continuity.
MCC versus waiting for Halo: Campaign Evolved
Xbox announced Halo: Campaign Evolved as a full remake of the Combat Evolved campaign, with a 2026 window for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The announcement establishes the planned platforms and window, but it does not establish that the remake is currently playable, available to preorder or sold in every region on the date you read this.

| Option | Status established by official material | What a new player should do |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: The Master Chief Collection | An established collection containing six campaigns, including Combat Evolved Anniversary. | Use it now for the documented release-order route, subject to your platform’s current listing. |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | Announced full remake of the Combat Evolved campaign for a 2026 release window. | Check an official regional store for launch status before treating it as an available alternative. |
There is no need to delay learning the franchise while waiting for the remake. If MCC is available on your platform, it is the documented collection route. If you specifically want the new remake, verify its live release status, edition and platform listing first; an announcement window is not proof of present availability.
Choosing the right route for your goal
| Your priority | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the franchise as a newcomer | MCC in release order | Starts with Combat Evolved Anniversary, as Halo Support recommends. |
| Play the fictional timeline from its earliest listed events | Reach, then Combat Evolved Anniversary and onward | Reach is set shortly before the first game. |
| Sample only one campaign | Combat Evolved Anniversary | It is the release-order foundation and the clearest standalone entry point. |
| Keep all six campaigns together | MCC | The collection consolidates the six named campaigns in one integrated product. |
| Play the newly announced remake | Campaign Evolved, if officially available | Its 2026 announcement is not the same as confirmed current storefront availability. |
Common ordering mistakes and how to avoid them
Starting with a later numbered game
Seeing Halo 4 in the collection can make it look like a reasonable first choice, especially if you have heard it is newer. It is still the sixth campaign in MCC’s listed set. Start with Combat Evolved Anniversary unless you have a specific reason to sample a later entry.
Putting Reach first without explaining why
Reach is a prequel, but prequel status does not automatically make it the ideal introduction. If you choose it first, do so knowingly: you are prioritizing fictional chronology over release order. For an uncomplicated first run, keep it in its release position after ODST.

Assuming the show and games are one timeline
The official descriptions support an adaptation relationship and shared franchise subject matter. They do not support telling readers that the games directly continue the television series. Treat the game campaigns as the franchise’s own story route.
Waiting for the remake without checking availability
A 2026 announcement is useful news, but release windows can differ from actual regional store status. Check the official platform store before saying that Campaign Evolved can be played or preordered.
A spoiler-conscious plan for new players
- Finish the television season you have watched before opening the games, so you can approach MCC as a new adaptation context rather than trying to reconcile every difference mid-campaign.
- Begin with Combat Evolved Anniversary and stay with that campaign until its conclusion.
- Move through Halo 2 and Halo 3 before taking the separate ODST campaign.
- Play Reach next if you are following release order; remember that its prequel setting explains why its fictional date does not match its position in the list.
- Finish with Halo 4 within the six-campaign MCC route.
This plan minimizes timeline explanation while you are learning the series. Once you have completed the route, you can revisit the campaigns in chronological order if comparing fictional dates is important to you.
Availability and purchase checks
Prices, regional store inventory, subscription inclusion and edition names are not established consistently by the official material summarized here. Before buying, confirm the platform shown by your local store, whether the listing is the complete MCC product or an individual campaign, and whether the version includes the campaign you intend to play.

Final recommendation
For almost every viewer coming from the television series, buy or access Halo: The Master Chief Collection, select Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and proceed through Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. Choose Reach first only when in-universe chronology is more important to you than the release history that Halo Support recommends. Keep the adaptation boundary in mind, and treat Halo: Campaign Evolved as an announced 2026 option whose live availability must be checked before purchase.
