Short answer: GTA V Enhanced has official ray-traced effects, but Rockstar’s current descriptions do not list a native path-tracing or volumetric-cloud mode. For those specific effects on PC, you need AuraV, a separate mod for GTA V Enhanced. If you want an unmodified game, use Enhanced’s ray-traced reflections, ray-traced global illumination and related lighting controls, while treating Lighting Quality as a local-light and headlight-shadow setting—not a cloud control.
The right setup depends first on your route: native Enhanced for supported Rockstar effects and straightforward compatibility, or AuraV on PC with an NVIDIA RTX graphics card for the mod’s advertised path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds. There is no published universal PC preset, FPS target or GPU tier that is best for every system, so use the repeatable testing method in this guide rather than copying an unsupported number.
What “path tracing” and “volumetric clouds” mean in GTA V
Path tracing is a more comprehensive form of ray-based rendering. Instead of applying ray tracing to selected effects, a path-traced renderer follows many light paths through a scene so that direct light, bounced light, shadows and reflections can be calculated together. It can improve the consistency of lighting, but the additional rays can be substantially more demanding than a limited ray-traced effect.

Light can scatter through their depth, producing changing brightness, soft shadows and atmospheric transitions. They are different from volumetric lighting around a lamp, headlight or other local light source.

That distinction matters because the words used by GTA V’s menus do not map one-to-one to the effects in the title of this guide. Rockstar’s Enhanced descriptions advertise ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections. The reviewed descriptions do not advertise a native path-tracing toggle or a native volumetric-cloud toggle. AuraV’s creator, by contrast, explicitly describes the mod as adding path-traced lighting and a rebuilt sky with volumetric clouds.
Choose the correct route before changing settings
| Route | What you get | Platform and hardware | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V Enhanced, unmodified | Rockstar’s supported ray-traced effects, including ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections. Later Enhanced notes add high-resolution ray-traced reflections and a second RTGI bounce. | Use the Enhanced edition on a supported platform. The cited material does not provide a single PC hardware tier that guarantees a particular frame rate. | It is not documented as having native full path tracing or a native volumetric-cloud setting. |
| AuraV mod | Creator-described path-traced lighting, a rebuilt sky with volumetric clouds and a new atmosphere, plus changes to water, rain, lightning, heat haze, smoke and skin lighting. | GTA V Enhanced on PC; the creator says AuraV is built for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards. No minimum or recommended RTX model is stated. | It is not a Rockstar-built setting or an officially guaranteed universal preset. Performance depends on your complete system and configuration. |
If you play on a console, or you do not want to modify the game, choose the first row. If volumetric clouds and path-traced lighting are the reason you are changing settings, the second row is the only route supported by the evidence for those exact effects.
Native GTA V Enhanced: the settings that actually matter
Ray-traced reflections
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.71 notes add an option for high-resolution ray-traced reflections in GTAV Enhanced. Enable that option when reflective surfaces are a priority and your frame-time testing shows that the result fits your target. It is a reflection-quality control, not a path-tracing switch, and it does not add volumetric clouds.
Ray-traced global illumination and the second bounce
Enhanced also exposes ray-traced global illumination (RTGI). The later notes add a second RTGI bounce. A second bounce can make indirect light behave more richly in interiors and shaded areas, but the cited material does not publish a consistent performance cost. Treat it as an image-quality choice: enable it, capture the same scene, and keep it only if the improvement is visible at your normal resolution and camera distance.
Ambient occlusion and ray-traced shadows
Rockstar’s Enhanced descriptions list ray-traced ambient occlusion and ray-traced shadows among the built-in effects. Ambient occlusion affects contact darkening where surfaces meet; shadows affect the shape and softness of cast shadows. They are separate from path tracing, so turning on every available ray-traced effect still does not convert the renderer into a full path tracer.
Lighting Quality is not a volumetric-cloud setting
Rockstar says the Enhanced Lighting Quality setting adjusts shadows from vehicle headlights and enables volumetric lighting effects for some local light sources. That wording describes light beams and local illumination in foggy or atmospheric conditions. It does not describe a cloud-volume renderer. Set Lighting Quality according to the importance of headlight shadows and local light shafts in your scenes; do not raise it expecting a new cloud system.
The fog-volumes command-line option
Rockstar’s PC command-line reference includes -fogVolumes, which enables lights’ volumetric effects in foggy weather. This can help local volumetric lighting appear when the weather supports it, but it remains a fog and light effect. It is not a volumetric-cloud control and should not be presented as one.

A practical native Enhanced setup
Use this sequence when you want Rockstar’s supported effects without a mod. Menu names can change with updates, so confirm the labels in your current Enhanced build.
- Start with the Enhanced edition and record your normal resolution, refresh rate and frame-rate cap. Do not change several unrelated options at once.
- Enable the ray-traced effects you care about: reflections, RTGI, ambient occlusion and shadows. If the high-resolution ray-traced reflections option and second RTGI bounce are present, test each separately rather than assuming both are required.
- Set Lighting Quality based on headlight shadows and local volumetric lighting. Do not use it as a proxy for cloud quality.
- If you use command-line options, add
-fogVolumesonly when you want lights’ volumetric effects in foggy weather. Verify the effect in matching weather before judging it. - Load the same repeatable scene after every change: an exterior with reflective surfaces, an interior or shaded street for RTGI, and a night or foggy scene for headlights and local volumetric lighting.
- Keep the option that gives a visible benefit at your chosen camera distance without making frame delivery noticeably uneven. Record the setting and result so that a later game update can be compared with the same baseline.
How to use AuraV for path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds
Check compatibility first
AuraV’s creator describes it as a mod for GTA V Enhanced on PC and says it is built for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards. The documentation reviewed here does not name a minimum RTX model, a recommended tier, a required amount of video memory or a guaranteed frame-rate target. Do not treat any particular card as officially necessary or sufficient.
Make a backup of your game configuration and save files before adding third-party files, and use the creator’s current installation documentation for the exact package and update procedure. This guide does not invent file names or install paths that are not established by the documentation.
Open the in-game panel
According to the creator, AuraV exposes its settings in Story Mode through F10. Start Story Mode first, then press F10 to open the panel. If the panel does not appear, confirm that you are running the Enhanced PC edition, that the mod version matches the game build and that the keyboard shortcut has not been changed by another overlay or utility.

Enable the effects in a controlled order
- Open Story Mode and verify that the AuraV panel appears with F10.
- Enable the path-traced lighting option and check a familiar daytime exterior, an interior and a night scene.
- Enable the volumetric-cloud or rebuilt-sky option and inspect the same camera angles with changing weather.
- Check reflections, shadows and atmosphere after both features are active. AuraV’s creator describes changes to the ocean, rain, lightning, heat haze, smoke and skin lighting, so a scene can look different even when you are not focusing on the sky.
- Change one AuraV control at a time. Close or apply the panel according to the mod’s own instructions, then revisit the same locations.
- Keep a written baseline of the options that produce the look you want. If a later update resets the panel, you can restore the baseline without guessing.
“It path traces the lighting, rebuilds the sky with volumetric clouds and a new atmosphere, gives the ocean waves shaped by the wind, and reworks rain, lightning, heat haze, smoke and skin lighting.” — AuraV by Kypos, creator documentation, accessed October 13, 2026.
This description is the basis for attributing path tracing and volumetric clouds to AuraV. It should not be read as a claim that those effects are part of Rockstar’s native Enhanced menu.
Image quality versus performance: a repeatable way to find your best setting
There is no current, comparable benchmark in the cited material that measures AuraV or Enhanced path-tracing-related settings on a specified PC. Because of that, a “best” preset cannot responsibly be expressed as a universal FPS number. Use a controlled comparison instead.

1. Define your target before tuning
Choose the resolution, display refresh rate and frame-time behavior you actually use. A setting that looks excellent in a slow cinematic view may feel poor during driving or rapid camera movement. If your display or game is capped, keep that cap unchanged throughout testing.
2. Build three test scenes
- Reflection scene: a wet street, vehicle bodywork or glass where ray-traced reflections are easy to see.
- Indirect-light scene: an interior, alley or shaded area where RTGI and its second bounce can change brightness and color.
- Atmosphere scene: night driving, fog or a weather transition for headlight shadows, local volumetric lighting and AuraV’s clouds.
3. Change one variable
Toggle one effect, return to the same camera position and compare. Changing reflections, RTGI, Lighting Quality and cloud rendering together makes it impossible to know which option caused a visual or performance change.
4. Watch consistency, not only an instantaneous counter
Look for hitching, uneven camera motion and delayed asset loading while driving. A setting that produces a higher momentary reading but causes inconsistent frame delivery may be less suitable than a slightly lower-quality option.
5. Keep two profiles
Save a quality-oriented profile with the effects you can clearly see and a performance-oriented profile with the most expensive or least noticeable options reduced. For AuraV, write down the F10 panel values; for native Enhanced, record the ray-tracing and Lighting Quality states. The game and mod can change after updates, so a written profile is more reliable than memory.
| Priority | Start with | Reduce first when performance is inconsistent | What to verify visually |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reflections | High-resolution ray-traced reflections in Enhanced, or AuraV’s reflection-related controls if exposed. | The reflection quality option, after confirming that distant or low-angle reflections are not important to you. | Wet roads, glass, vehicle panels and water surfaces. |
| Indirect lighting | RTGI, then test the second bounce separately. | The second bounce before disabling all RTGI, if the added bounce is difficult to see in your normal scenes. | Interior corners, shaded streets and color spill from nearby surfaces. |
| Local volumetric lighting | Lighting Quality and, where appropriate, -fogVolumes. |
Lighting Quality if headlight shadows and local light shafts are not important. | Headlights in fog, smoke or atmospheric weather. |
| Clouds and atmosphere | AuraV’s volumetric-cloud and atmosphere controls. | The cloud or atmosphere control that produces the largest frame-time instability on your system. | Cloud depth, cloud-edge lighting, weather transitions and the horizon. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: calling Enhanced “path traced”
Enhanced has ray-traced effects, but the reviewed Rockstar descriptions do not list native full path tracing. Correct the terminology in your own notes and settings guides: say “ray traced” for Rockstar’s built-in effects and reserve “path traced” for AuraV’s advertised mod feature.
Mistake: expecting Lighting Quality to create clouds
Lighting Quality covers vehicle-headlight shadows and volumetric lighting from some local lights. If you want clouds, use the AuraV route and its cloud controls; no native cloud toggle is established in the cited Rockstar material.
Mistake: assuming every RTX card has the same result
AuraV’s creator says the mod is built for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards, but does not publish a model-by-model requirement or performance tier. Hardware, resolution, weather, traffic and other settings all affect frame delivery. Test your own configuration rather than treating a forum recommendation as a guarantee.

Mistake: changing several options before comparing
Combined changes hide the cause of an improvement or slowdown. Return to the same scene, alter one control, and record the result. This is especially important when comparing high-resolution reflections with the second RTGI bounce.
Mistake: transferring console targets to PC or AuraV
Rockstar’s 2022 console announcement gives historical targets of 30 FPS for Fidelity Mode and 60 FPS for Performance Mode. Performance RT on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X combines ray tracing with a 60 FPS target. Those are console-mode targets, not PC recommendations and not AuraV benchmarks.
Platform guidance and update cautions
PC Enhanced
Use native Enhanced settings for the supported Rockstar path. Use AuraV only when you specifically want the mod’s path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds, and keep the game, graphics driver and mod version aligned. After a game update, check whether the mod still loads and whether its F10 panel values were retained.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
The cited Rockstar material discusses Fidelity, Performance and Performance RT modes for these consoles, with the historical targets noted above. AuraV is described as a PC mod, so do not expect its path-traced clouds or F10 panel on console.
Older editions and unsupported configurations
The evidence here concerns GTA V Enhanced and does not establish AuraV support for older PC editions. If your installation is not Enhanced, verify compatibility with the current creator documentation before copying any files or expecting the panel to appear.
A concise decision checklist
- Do you need Rockstar-supported, unmodified graphics? Choose native Enhanced ray tracing.
- Do you specifically need path-traced lighting and volumetric clouds? Use AuraV on GTA V Enhanced for PC, subject to its current compatibility documentation.
- Are you changing Lighting Quality to obtain clouds? Stop: that setting concerns headlight shadows and some local volumetric lighting.
- Are high-resolution reflections or a second RTGI bounce available? Test each separately in the same scenes.
- Are you looking for a guaranteed FPS number or required RTX model? None is established by the cited material; measure your own system.
- Did a game update change behavior? Recheck Enhanced patch notes and the mod creator’s documentation before retuning.
Bottom line
For native GTA V Enhanced, the best practical approach is to enable the ray-traced effects you can see—especially reflections and RTGI—then test the high-resolution reflections option and second RTGI bounce independently. Use Lighting Quality for headlight shadows and local volumetric lighting, and treat -fogVolumes as a fog-and-light option. Do not describe any of these as native volumetric clouds or full path tracing.
