The best GTA Online settings depend on your platform, PC edition, graphics hardware, display resolution and frame-rate target. Start at your display’s native resolution, measure a repeatable Online scene, then change one graphics option at a time. On PC, lower expensive options such as grass, level-of-detail distance, shadows, post effects, reflections or water only as far as needed; keep textures appropriate for your VRAM. If you are seeing crashes, freezes, launch errors or irregular stutter rather than consistently low frame rates, update the game and driver and verify the installation before tuning visuals.

Identify your platform and GTA V edition first

GTA Online is supported on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC Enhanced and PC Legacy in Rockstar’s Title Update 1.73 coverage, updated October 1, 2026. Graphics controls and performance targets differ between those platforms. PC Enhanced and PC Legacy are separate products with separate system requirements, so a setting guide for one should not be treated as a requirement or preset for the other.

Platform or edition What this guide can establish What to avoid assuming
PC Enhanced Use the current Enhanced requirements, native output resolution and the individual PC graphics controls exposed by Rockstar. Legacy requirements or old benchmark results automatically apply.
PC Legacy Use the Legacy installation’s detected defaults, then tune the options available in that build. Enhanced hardware requirements or Enhanced-only behavior applies.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S Choose among the visual/performance modes and display options offered by your installed edition and television or monitor. A single universal console preset is optimal for every display.
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Use the options exposed by the older console edition and make sure the display is configured correctly. Current-generation performance modes or PC controls are available.

Rockstar’s PC requirements page was updated December 10, 2025. For Enhanced, it lists both minimum and recommended configurations; those figures are not Legacy specifications.

Define “smooth” before changing a setting

A high average frame rate does not guarantee smooth Online play. Three different problems are often described as “bad performance”:

Sceptre New 22-Inch Gaming Monitor, FHD 1080p, Up to 144Hz, HDMI, DisplayPort, Built-in Speakers, Machine Black (E225W-FW144 Series, 2026)
  • 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
  • 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
  • Low rendered frame rate: the game cannot produce frames quickly enough for your target, such as 60 Hz or 120 Hz.
  • Uneven frame delivery: the average may look acceptable, but short spikes create hitching when entering a dense area, driving quickly or joining a busy session.
  • Failure or instability: crashes, freezes, a launch error or a broken installation. A visual-quality slider cannot repair these.

Write down a target before tuning. Examples are “locked 60 frames per second on a 60 Hz display,” “the highest stable rate my 120 Hz screen can show,” or “clear native-resolution image with occasional dips accepted.” Without a target, lowering quality can make the picture worse without solving the problem you actually notice.

Record your baseline and test the same Online situation

Use a controlled process so every change has an observable result. Rockstar exposes separate PC parameters for frame limit, grass, level-of-detail distance, shadows, post effects, reflections, textures, water and other graphics options. The parameter reference documents the controls; it does not prescribe one current universal preset.

  1. Record the system: note platform, PC edition (Enhanced or Legacy), GPU, CPU, system memory, display resolution, refresh rate and your target frame rate.
  2. Start from detected defaults: launch the game with the configuration it selected for your hardware. Save a copy or photograph of the original values.
  3. Use native output: keep the game at the display’s native resolution when clarity is the priority. A lower internal or output resolution can raise performance, but it also softens the image.
  4. Choose a repeatable route: drive the same road, visit the same intersection or repeat the same activity. Include a populated GTA Online session rather than testing only an empty area.
  5. Observe frame delivery: record average performance if your overlay provides it, but also note hitching, sudden drops and whether camera movement remains consistent.
  6. Change one option or one closely related group: alter a single setting, repeat the route and compare. If several sliders change together, you will not know which trade-off produced the result.
  7. Keep a short log: write the value, location, activity and observed result. Restore a setting if image quality falls more than the performance gain justifies.

Story Mode’s built-in benchmark is useful for repeatability, but it does not represent every heavy scene or a full GTA Online lobby. NVIDIA’s historical guide reported roughly ±5 frames per second variation between repeated benchmark runs across its four scenes; it used ten baseline runs and five passes per setting to reduce that variance. Treat those figures as test-method context, not as a current Online performance guarantee.

PC settings: a practical order for clarity and performance

1. Resolution and frame limit

Set the output to your monitor or television’s native resolution first. This preserves text, road markings and distant detail. If the game remains below target after tuning individual effects, resolution is a larger but more visible performance lever. A frame limit can prevent the GPU from rendering unnecessary frames and can make frame delivery more consistent, but choose a cap that your hardware can sustain rather than chasing a number it reaches only briefly.

2. Textures and VRAM

Texture quality affects surface detail and memory use more than the basic geometry of a scene. Keep it as high as your available video memory and edition support comfortably allow. If you see texture streaming problems, missing detail or severe hitching while driving, test a lower texture value before sacrificing resolution. Do not assume a texture change fixes a driver or installation fault.

3. Grass

Grass can be expensive in scenes containing large vegetation areas. Reduce it incrementally when outdoor locations or countryside routes cause the largest drops. Test the same vegetation-heavy route after each change; an urban benchmark may hide the cost.

  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

4. Level-of-detail distance

Level-of-detail distance controls how far detailed objects are maintained. Lowering it can reduce the work required while driving quickly through the city, but distant buildings and objects may switch detail sooner. Use the smallest reduction that meets your frame target, then inspect long sight lines and high-speed travel for pop-in you find distracting.

5. Shadows

Shadows add depth but can consume substantial rendering time, especially in scenes with many lights or objects. Lower the shadow setting one step, repeat the same route and look for both frame-time improvement and distracting shadow softness or pop-in. Keep a higher value if the visual gain is important and the measured drop is small.

6. Post effects

Post-processing changes the image after the main scene is rendered. If performance is short of target, test a lower post-effects value and compare motion clarity, lighting treatment and any blur you notice. Make the decision from the moving image, not a paused screenshot.

7. Reflections and water

Reflection and water controls matter most near wet roads, pools, beaches and other reflective surfaces. Reduce reflections first when those scenes are responsible for the dips, then verify that the improvement appears in your actual Online route. Water quality is similarly situational; changing it has little value if your problem occurs in dense city traffic.

8. Population density as a measured trade-off

NVIDIA’s PC graphics guide presented 75% population density as a tested “sweet spot” on its historical test system: the scene stayed suitably busy while leaving some frames for other effects. That was 2015-era testing, not a current recommendation for every PC, Enhanced, Legacy build or Online lobby. Use 75% only as an experiment: compare it with your current value in a busy session and keep whichever delivers the crowd level and frame consistency you prefer.

Choose a tuning path based on what you observe

When the GPU is the apparent limit

  • Keep native resolution if the image is already clear.
  • Test shadows, grass, post effects, reflections and water one at a time.
  • Use a frame limit once you find a rate the GPU can sustain.
  • Lower resolution only after effect reductions fail to meet the target or if you accept a softer image.

When busy scenes or driving cause the drops

  • Test population density and level-of-detail distance in the same busy Online area.
  • Repeat the route at comparable speed; rapid movement can expose streaming and CPU-side limits that a stationary test misses.
  • Compare frame pacing, not just the highest number shown by an overlay.

When video memory or streaming appears stressed

  • Test textures first, while keeping native output resolution if possible.
  • Check whether the symptom follows high-detail areas and fast travel.
  • If hitching persists after a sensible texture reduction, move to the installation, driver and patch checks below rather than endlessly lowering visual quality.

When settings are not the real problem

For crashing, freezing, installation errors or persistent poor performance, use Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting sequence before changing more sliders:

  1. Apply the latest available game patch for your edition.
  2. Update the graphics driver. Rockstar’s support wording is: “Update your drivers to the versions shown here (or higher).”
  3. Verify the game files using the launcher’s verification function.
  4. Restart and test the same activity again with your previous graphics values.

These steps address software state and installation integrity; they are not routine FPS tweaks. A graphics preset cannot replace a missing, damaged or outdated game file.

Specific ERR_GFX_STATE launch error

Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE guidance is symptom-specific. If that is the error you see at launch, try DirectX 12 instead of Vulkan using the game’s available graphics API option. Rockstar also notes that rolling back a driver may help when the newest driver remains problematic. Do not switch APIs solely because your frame rate is low when the game otherwise launches normally; test the workaround only for the identified launch error.

Console settings and television setup

Console editions do not expose the full PC parameter set. Open the graphics or display options offered by your installed edition and select the mode that matches your priority: a steadier performance mode when available, or a higher-quality mode when image detail matters more. The reviewed Rockstar material confirms the supported console platforms but does not establish one current menu preset that is optimal for every PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, television or monitor.

  • Set the console output to a resolution and refresh rate your display actually supports.
  • Enable the television or monitor’s game mode to reduce display processing delay.
  • Use the display’s motion-smoothing features cautiously; they can alter the image without increasing the game’s rendered frame rate.
  • Retest the same Online activity after changing a mode, because a menu label alone does not guarantee consistent frame delivery in a crowded session.

Variable refresh rate: optional display-side smoothness

NVIDIA’s GTA V guide discusses G-SYNC monitors as a way to make gameplay appear smoother. A compatible variable-refresh-rate display can synchronize its refresh timing with the frames the game is delivering, reducing visible tearing and making fluctuations less distracting within the display’s supported range. It does not increase the number of frames the game renders, cure a crash, or replace sensible in-game tuning. Confirm compatibility among the GPU, console or PC output, cable and display before buying; a monitor purchase is optional.

Common mistakes that waste performance tuning time

  • Copying an old “best settings” list: historical tests predate Enhanced and current hardware. Use published values as starting points, not promises.
  • Changing everything at once: you lose the ability to identify the expensive option and may sacrifice clarity unnecessarily.
  • Testing only Story Mode: an empty benchmark scene does not model a crowded GTA Online lobby.
  • Lowering resolution first: this often produces the clearest image-quality loss. Test individual effects while retaining native output when possible.
  • Using a benchmark average as a guarantee: NVIDIA reported run-to-run variation of about ±5 FPS in its historical four-scene methodology.
  • Treating stutter as an FPS problem: patch, driver and file verification come before a long sequence of visual compromises.
  • Applying Enhanced requirements to Legacy: the editions have separate requirements and can behave differently after updates.
  • Assuming a monitor fixes rendering: variable refresh can improve perceived smoothness but cannot create missing frames.

A compact repeatable checklist

  1. Identify PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC Enhanced or PC Legacy.
  2. Record hardware, native resolution, refresh rate and target frame rate.
  3. Start from detected defaults and save the original values.
  4. Test a repeatable route in an actual GTA Online session.
  5. Keep native resolution when clarity is the priority.
  6. Change grass, level-of-detail distance, shadows, post effects, reflections, textures, water or population density one at a time.
  7. Retest the same route and keep a change only when its visual trade-off is worthwhile.
  8. If the issue is a crash, freeze, launch error or persistent hitch, patch the game, update the driver and verify files.
  9. For ERR_GFX_STATE specifically, test DirectX 12 in place of Vulkan and consider a driver rollback only if the latest driver remains problematic.
  10. Use variable refresh as an optional display improvement, not as a substitute for a stable configuration.
