Red Dead Redemption 2 is the strongest overall alternative if you want Rockstar-level world detail, freedom and a long story. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a modern city, driving and deeper role-playing systems; Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for a compact crime drama built around martial arts; or Watch Dogs 2 if hacking and contemporary satire are the main attraction. Grand Theft Auto V remains the obvious way to return to a contemporary GTA sandbox on PC, although it is another entry in the same series rather than a new substitute.
None of these games is GTA 6 in disguise. Each reproduces a different part of the appeal: living worlds, open-ended travel, crime stories, vehicles, shooting, combat, hacking or character progression. The right choice depends on which part of the GTA formula you miss most.

What is known about GTA 6 on PC
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page presents Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, following Jason and Lucia as they become involved in a criminal conspiracy. The page identifies PlayStation 5 as the platform on which the game plays best. The page consulted does not announce a PC release date or PC system requirements, so a specific PC launch window or hardware recommendation should not be treated as confirmed.

Rockstar describes the situation this way: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them.” That official description confirms the setting and protagonists, but it does not answer when the PC version will arrive. Until Rockstar publishes PC details, the games below are practical choices you can play now rather than predictions about GTA 6’s release schedule.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2: the best overall substitute for Rockstar-style immersion

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the closest match for readers who value the way a Rockstar open world feels authored, reactive and full of optional discovery. It offers a large, lively world and a long story, giving you room to roam instead of forcing every session into a short mission loop. The recommendation is about world-building and freedom, not setting: this is a historical Western, not a contemporary city where cars and firearms define everyday movement.

Its identity is that of an RPG first. You are not simply looking for a broad collection of GTA-style diversions; you are moving through a world designed around quests, builds and role-playing decisions. That makes it a good fit if you want more control over how a character develops, but a less exact fit if you only want an urban driving-and-shooting loop without RPG overhead.

4. Watch Dogs 2: choose it when hacking is the main attraction
Why it fits
Watch Dogs 2 offers another contemporary city option, but its central fantasy is hacking. It is a sensible choice when you want to approach a city through tools and systems instead of relying mainly on gunfights and driving.

5. Grand Theft Auto V: the direct, familiar PC fallback
Why it fits
If waiting for GTA 6 mainly means you want to play a modern GTA game on PC, Grand Theft Auto V is the most direct answer. It is an existing PC entry in the same series, so its urban setting, driving and crime-sandbox structure require less adjustment than the alternatives above.

GTA V does not provide a new setting or a different design philosophy; it gives you another way to spend time in GTA while you wait. Treat it as a fallback for familiarity, not as a substitute that solves the same problem as Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Sleeping Dogs or Watch Dogs 2.

Rockstar’s GTA V requirements page lists 125 GB of storage and account and internet requirements for activation and online play. The page warns that requirements can change, so check the current listing before installation.

- Check the current store page. Confirm the regional edition, price, included expansions and availability. This matters especially for Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition and Watch Dogs 2, where a listing does not guarantee that every region will show the same offer later.

Common mistakes when choosing a GTA 6 stand-in
Expecting a one-to-one replacement
These games overlap with GTA in different ways. Red Dead Redemption 2 matches the sense of authored freedom; Cyberpunk 2077 matches modern-city travel and crime activity; Sleeping Dogs matches street-level crime and physical combat; Watch Dogs 2 matches city experimentation; GTA V matches the series itself.
