There is no universal “best” preset for every survival sandbox game or PC. For smoother play, start with the game’s performance preset, then reduce the options that usually require the most rendering work—shadows, effects and particles, post-processing, environment or detail quality, and anti-aliasing. Change a small group, test it in a demanding scene, and then fine-tune individual settings. This approach preserves image quality better than dropping every option to Low.

Riot Games Support summarizes the limitation well: “There’s no single perfect setup for every PC.” Your useful target depends on the game and edition, platform, graphics card, processor, display resolution, and whether you prefer a steadier frame rate or sharper visuals.

What “smooth” means in a survival sandbox

Smoothness is primarily consistent frame delivery, not a particular preset name. A game that holds its target frame rate during exploration, base building, combat, weather and large gatherings generally feels better than one that briefly reaches a high number and then stutters. Use the frame-rate target your platform or display can sustain as the reference point, and judge the result in the scenes where you actually play.

Survival sandboxes are unusually variable. A quiet interior may be easy to render, while a forest full of foliage, a settlement with many structures, volumetric weather, water, shadows and several creatures can be much harder. A setting that looks harmless in a menu preview may become expensive in those moments. That is why a single cross-game preset cannot be accurate.

Set a sensible baseline before changing options

Identify the game, edition and platform

Write down the exact game and edition first. Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft expose different graphics options, and console versions may offer named performance modes instead of individual controls. PC settings also depend on the output resolution and refresh rate. A recommendation for 1080p cannot be applied unchanged to 1440p or 4K.

Choose a performance target

Decide whether your priority is a stable 30, 40, 60 or higher frame rate. Do not select a target your hardware cannot maintain in the hardest scene you expect to encounter. If the game provides a Performance, Balanced or Quality mode, start with that mode rather than changing a dozen sliders at once.

Record a repeatable test route

Use the same demanding location for every comparison: a busy base, a forest edge, a village, a cave with lighting effects or a battle with several entities. Walk the route for a few minutes, perform the same actions and observe both the frame-rate display and visible hitching. Menus and empty test areas are not representative.

Which graphics settings to lower first

The following order follows the categories Riot Games Support identifies for improving frame rate. The exact labels vary by game, but the underlying workload is similar.

Setting group Why it can be expensive First adjustment Typical visual trade-off
Shadows Dynamic lights must render shadow maps for terrain, structures, foliage and characters, often from more than one light source. Move from Ultra to High or Medium; reduce shadow distance or cascade quality if those controls exist. Shadows become softer, lower resolution or disappear farther from the player. Geometry and textures remain sharp.
Effects and particles Fire, smoke, sparks, weather, explosions and other transparent effects can require many overlapping layers. Lower effects quality, particle count or effect distance before reducing overall resolution. Combat and weather effects look simpler or fade sooner, but the scene’s basic detail is preserved.
Post-processing Screen-space reflections, ambient effects, depth of field, motion blur, bloom and similar passes are rendered after the main scene. Disable motion blur and depth of field if you dislike them; then lower the post-processing preset or individual reflection and ambient-occlusion options. Lighting appears flatter, reflections are less detailed and cinematic focus effects are reduced. Disabling blur can also make camera movement clearer.
Environment, detail or material quality Higher values increase object density, geometry complexity, vegetation distance and material calculations. Lower one step, or shorten view and object distance while keeping nearby texture quality higher. Faraway foliage, small props and surface detail may pop in or look simpler.
Anti-aliasing Higher anti-aliasing samples or temporal processing add work at the final image stage. Use a lower quality level or a less expensive anti-aliasing method. Test while moving, not only while standing still. Edges can show more shimmer or stair-stepping, especially on fences, leaves and thin geometry.
Texture quality Large textures consume video memory and can cause stutter when the graphics card runs short, although texture quality is not always the largest raw frame-rate cost. Keep it high when memory is sufficient; lower it one step if you see texture pop-in, hitching or a memory warning. Surfaces look less crisp at close range. Lower texture quality is often preferable to lowering resolution when the GPU has adequate headroom.

Lowering every option simultaneously makes it difficult to learn which change helped. Start with shadows plus effects or post-processing, test, and then continue only if the demanding scene still misses your target.

A step-by-step tuning procedure

  1. Update the game and system. Install the current game update, operating-system updates and graphics driver available for your hardware. Minecraft Bedrock’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking game and system updates, requirements and graphics drivers when visual problems continue.
  2. Start from the game’s preset. Select Performance or the lowest preset that meets your target, apply it and restart if the game requests a restart. Record the resulting frame rate and image issues in your repeatable test route.
  3. Set output resolution and display mode. Use the monitor or television’s native resolution when possible. If the frame rate remains too low after the high-impact settings are reduced, test a lower render resolution or an in-game resolution scale. This is a larger clarity trade-off than changing shadows, so leave it until later.
  4. Reduce one high-cost group. Lower shadows, effects and particles, post-processing, environment/detail/material quality or anti-aliasing by one step. Do not change all five at once.
  5. Repeat the same test. Return to the same base, forest, cave or combat situation. Watch for sustained frame-rate improvement and whether stutters occur when new objects or effects appear.
  6. Adjust the next group only if needed. If the target is still missed, lower another group by one step. If the target is met, raise the setting you care about most—often textures or nearby detail—until the frame rate becomes unstable, then step back once.
  7. Restore settings individually. When the image looks too plain, restore options one at a time and retest. This identifies the best visual improvement per unit of performance instead of forcing a blanket Low preset.
  8. Save a second profile if available. Keep a quality profile for quiet exploration and a performance profile for large bases or multiplayer events. Some games expose profiles; otherwise record the values in a note so they can be restored after an update.

How to verify frame rate instead of guessing

FPS is useful evidence, but it is only one indicator. A high average can hide short stalls, and a lower but stable target may feel better. Check the frame rate while moving through the demanding route, entering a loaded base, turning quickly and triggering the effects that normally cause slowdowns.

ARK: Survival Ascended

ARK: Survival Ascended Support documents the in-game console command stat fps to display frames per second. Enter the command again to hide the display. Use it while reproducing the slowdown, not in an empty menu, and compare the same scene after each graphics change.

When an FPS counter is unavailable

Use the platform’s built-in performance overlay if one exists, or compare recordings made on the same route. Note visible hitching, delayed asset loading and input response in addition to the number. A setting that improves the counter but introduces distracting texture pop-in may not be the best compromise.

Game-specific examples and modes

Minecraft Bedrock: use the visual preset before manual tuning

Minecraft Bedrock’s Vibrant Visuals feature includes a Favor Performance option for slowdown. The official troubleshooting guidance also recommends trying the Simple or Fancy graphics modes when advanced visuals are unsuitable. Choose Favor Performance first if Vibrant Visuals causes drops, then test Simple or Fancy and compare the result in the same world area. Update the game and system, verify requirements and graphics drivers, and temporarily disable or remove add-ons when troubleshooting persistent visual problems.

These labels apply to Bedrock and should not be treated as universal settings for other editions or games. Menu names and available effects can differ by device.

Minecraft Java Edition: requirements are edition-specific

Minecraft’s current Java Edition requirements illustrate why hardware figures must be tied to a specific title. The published targets list 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings as the updated minimum target and 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings as the updated recommended target. The recommended specification includes a graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM.

Minecraft Java Edition target Resolution and frame rate Graphics preset How to interpret it
Updated minimum target 1080p at 30 FPS Fast A baseline for running the edition at the stated target; it is not a promise for every world, mod, shader or render-distance choice.
Updated recommended target 1080p at 60 FPS Fancy A title-specific recommendation for the stated resolution and preset, not a hardware baseline for other survival sandboxes.

Large render distances, shaders, high-resolution resource packs, mods and busy automated bases can exceed those reference conditions. If the graphics card is the limiting component, an upgrade may help, but the 6 GB figure does not establish that every player needs an upgrade or identify a particular product.

Valheim on Xbox: modes trade resolution for frame rate

Valheim’s official FAQ lists separate performance, balanced and quality modes. The targets differ between Xbox Series X and Series S, so select the row for your console rather than assuming the same result across platforms.

Console Performance Mode Balanced Mode Quality Mode
Xbox Series X 1200p at 60 FPS 1440p at 40 FPS 1800p at 30 FPS
Xbox Series S 900p at 60 FPS 900p at 40 FPS 1080p at 30 FPS

These are mode targets published for Valheim’s Xbox versions, not a universal ranking in which one mode is always “best.” Performance favors a higher frame-rate target, while Quality favors a higher rendered resolution; Balanced sits between those priorities according to the listed targets.

Choose changes based on the bottleneck

If the GPU is overloaded

Reduce resolution scale, shadows, effects, post-processing, anti-aliasing and distant detail in that order of practical impact. A GPU limit often appears as a frame rate that falls when looking toward dense geometry, lighting or effects. Keep textures higher if video memory is sufficient and the problem is raw rendering time rather than memory pressure.

If video memory is exhausted

Lower texture quality, texture streaming distance or resource-pack resolution. Symptoms can include sudden hitching when entering a new area, blurry textures that sharpen late, or warnings about available graphics memory. Lowering shadows alone may not solve a memory-bound problem.

If the processor or simulation is the limit

Graphics reductions cannot remove every slowdown. Large bases, many animals, farms, physics objects, scripts or multiplayer activity can burden the CPU or game simulation. Lower view distance, object distance, population or simulation-distance options when the game provides them, and test an area with fewer active entities. If the frame rate remains similar after major visual reductions, the bottleneck may not be the GPU.

If stutter occurs during loading

Check storage space, background applications, overlays and texture-streaming settings. Update the game and driver, then test without add-ons or high-resolution resource packs. A stable average FPS does not rule out asset-loading stalls.

Resolution, refresh rate and image quality trade-offs

Resolution determines how many pixels the game renders each frame. Reducing it can deliver a larger performance change than lowering a single effect, but it also softens the entire image. Use resolution scaling only after targeted reductions, or when you need to meet a specific frame-rate target on a high-resolution display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the target to the display. A 60 Hz panel cannot show more than 60 refreshed images per second, while a higher-refresh display can make a stable higher frame rate useful when the game and hardware can sustain it. Do not raise the target merely because the display supports it; consistency in the hardest scene matters more than a peak number in an empty area.

Common mistakes that make tuning less effective

  • Copying a preset from another game. Similar labels can represent different workloads, and console modes may change both resolution and frame-rate targets.
  • Testing only in a quiet area. Survival games often slow down near bases, forests, weather systems, water, caves or large fights.
  • Changing everything at once. You lose the ability to identify which option improved or harmed performance.
  • Assuming texture quality is always the first setting to lower. It mainly affects memory use and surface clarity; shadows, effects and post-processing are often better first targets for rendering load.
  • Chasing an average FPS number. Observe hitching, frame-time consistency, input response and asset loading as well.
  • Ignoring updates and add-ons. Bedrock’s official troubleshooting steps include updates, requirements checks, driver checks and add-on testing because software conflicts can look like graphics limitations.
  • Expecting hardware figures from one title to transfer to another. Minecraft Java’s 1080p targets and 6 GB recommended VRAM specification apply to that edition only.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Confirm the exact game, edition, platform, resolution and desired frame-rate target.
  2. Apply the built-in Performance or Favor Performance mode if the game offers one.
  3. Test a demanding, repeatable scene and record FPS plus visible stutter.
  4. Lower shadows, effects or particles, post-processing, environment/detail/material quality and anti-aliasing one group at a time.
  5. Lower texture quality only when memory pressure or texture-streaming stutter points to it.
  6. Use resolution scaling or a lower output resolution if targeted changes are insufficient.
  7. Restore individual settings until you find the highest visual quality that remains stable.
  8. Update the game, operating system and graphics driver, and test without add-ons when problems persist.
