For the smoothest Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition experience, start with the built-in benchmark at your monitor’s native 1080p resolution. While diagnosing uneven frame delivery, turn V-sync off and set particle effects, water and sky to Medium or Low. If the benchmark or a representative battle is still unstable, lower resolution by one step, then reduce terrain quality and disable distortion effects, HDR, vignette, SSAO and blood effects. Change one control group at a time and benchmark after each change; there is no universal “best” preset because CPU speed, RAM, graphics hardware, resolution and your chosen visual target all determine the result.

What “Shogun 2 Remastered” means in 2026

SEGA’s current PC release is Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition, which arrived on October 13, 2026 with the previously released downloadable content and updates. Players and search results may call it “Shogun 2 Remastered,” but the in-game controls discussed here are the Complete Edition graphics options. Advice written for the older release remains useful where the controls are unchanged; legacy minimum requirements, however, are not a guarantee of performance in the 2026 edition.

The practical objective is consistent frame delivery in both the campaign and large battles, not a number promised by a preset. Official material does not publish a remaster-wide FPS table or a universal target. A “smooth 60 FPS Shogun 2” setup therefore has to be validated on your own system, at your selected resolution, with the benchmark and a demanding battle scene.

Start with the benchmark, not a guess

The benchmark gives you a repeatable starting point, while a real campaign turn and a large battle reveal problems that a short test can miss. Use this sequence before changing several options at once:

  1. Write down the current resolution, graphics preset and any custom settings.
  2. Open the game’s graphics options and run the built-in benchmark.
  3. Note whether the result is consistently slow, has abrupt hitching, or feels uneven despite a reasonable average. Record any visible quality changes as you work.
  4. Apply one setting or one closely related group from the performance order below.
  5. Run the benchmark again, then load a representative campaign turn and a large battle. Use the same scenes for each comparison.
  6. Keep the last change only if it improves the problem without an unacceptable visual trade-off.

The benchmark is a comparison tool, not an official pass/fail score. The sources do not define a universal FPS target, so choose your own floor—such as a stable 60 FPS if your hardware can sustain it—and judge consistency in the scenes you actually play.

The documented order for the largest gains

Feral’s guidance orders the controls from the largest expected performance gain to the smallest. It also notes that available choices can vary with hardware and with other selections. The order is a sensible troubleshooting path, not an independently measured FPS ranking for every graphics card.

Control First smoothness move What you give up When to touch it
Screen resolution Drop one step only when needed; keep native 1080p if it is sustainable. Image sharpness versus overall GPU cost. First if the entire benchmark is too slow or the GPU is saturated.
Vertical synchronisation (V-sync) Turn it off while diagnosing latency or uneven delivery. With V-sync off, tearing can appear; with it on, synchronization can add latency or expose pacing problems. Disable temporarily to determine whether synchronization is masking the real issue.
Particle effects Move Ultra to Medium, then Low or Off if necessary. Less smoke, fire and other battle spectacle. Early in a battle-focused performance pass.
Water Move Ultra to Medium or Low. Lower-quality reflections and surface detail. When scenes with rivers, coasts or harbors are heavy.
Sky Move Ultra to Medium or Low. Reduced sky and atmospheric quality. Alongside water if outdoor scenes remain demanding.
Terrain quality Reduce High to Low if campaign or battle scenes still hitch. Less ground detail and distance quality. After resolution, synchronization, particles, water and sky.
Distortion effects Disable the toggle. Less heat haze and other screen-space warping. When you need inexpensive post-processing headroom.
HDR Disable it if necessary. Reduced high-dynamic-range lighting presentation. After the major quality controls, especially on older displays or GPUs.
Vignette Disable it. No darkened image edges. Use for a small additional gain when chasing consistency.
SSAO Disable ambient occlusion. Less contact-shadow depth around objects and terrain. When scenes are nearly smooth but still miss your frame-time floor.
Blood effects Disable the option if the Blood Pack exposes it. Fewer gore effects during combat. Last in the documented sequence, or whenever you prefer a cleaner presentation.

Because Feral presents this as an expected-impact order, do not assume that lowering a setting near the bottom will rescue a system limited by resolution or graphics memory. Work from the top and stop as soon as your frame delivery is acceptable.

A reliable settings workflow

1. Establish a native-resolution baseline

Begin at the monitor’s native 1080p resolution when your system can sustain it. Native output is usually the clearest image and avoids introducing scaling softness while you diagnose performance. If the benchmark is not stable, lower resolution by one available step rather than jumping immediately to the minimum; re-test before making another change.

2. Remove synchronization as a diagnostic variable

Set V-sync off for the comparison pass. This can expose tearing, but it also tells you whether synchronization is contributing to latency or uneven delivery. Once the underlying workload is under control, you can test V-sync again and decide whether tear-free presentation is worth the trade-off on your display.

3. Reduce the effects that spike during battles

Set particle effects to Medium first, then Low or Off only if needed. Smoke, fire and impact effects can make a crowded engagement feel worse than a quiet campaign map. Water and sky should follow the same Ultra-to-Medium-to-Low progression. Keep the changes grouped only when you are deliberately testing that battle-effects tier; otherwise, change one control so you can identify its visual cost.

4. Trim geometry and post-processing

If campaign turns or large battles remain heavy, lower terrain quality from High to Low. Next disable distortion effects, HDR and vignette. These toggles remove heat haze, high-dynamic-range presentation and edge shading without changing the game’s core simulation. Disable SSAO after those options if you still need headroom; the trade-off is flatter contact shading around units and objects.

5. Decide on blood effects last

If the Blood Pack is installed and exposes a blood-effects option, disabling it is the final item in Feral’s sequence. It changes combat presentation rather than terrain or resolution, so many players prefer to leave it enabled until every larger performance lever has been tested.

6. Validate the result outside the benchmark

Run the benchmark again, then play one representative campaign turn and one large battle. A setting combination that looks good in the test can still hitch when many units, effects and terrain details are visible. Keep a simple note of each change and its result so you can restore the clearest combination that meets your frame-time goal.

Starting profiles for common goals

These are starting points for testing, not guaranteed presets. Your CPU, RAM, GPU, resolution and memory pressure determine whether a profile is sufficient.

Goal Start here Next adjustment if it is not smooth
Clear 1080p image with balanced quality Native 1080p; V-sync off for testing; particles, water and sky at Medium; leave terrain at its current level initially. Lower terrain, then disable distortion, HDR, vignette and SSAO in the documented order.
Older or integrated graphics hardware One resolution step below native if required; particles, water and sky at Low; V-sync off while diagnosing. Reduce terrain quality and disable the listed post-processing effects before lowering resolution again.
Battle-focused consistency Choose the resolution your GPU can sustain; prioritize Medium or Low particles, water and sky over cosmetic effects. Use the same large battle for each test, then reduce terrain and SSAO if frame delivery still spikes.
Laptop on battery Connect the charger before benchmarking; start with the balanced profile rather than judging battery performance. Close background applications and check memory behavior before making further quality cuts.

Do not read these profiles as promises of 60 FPS. They simply apply the documented order to different priorities while preserving a controlled way to find your own balance.

How to stop Shogun 2 Complete Edition stuttering

If the whole benchmark is slow

  • Check GPU load and lower resolution one step.
  • Reduce particles, water and sky from Ultra to Medium or Low.
  • Retest before changing terrain or post-processing.

A consistently low result usually indicates that the rendered workload is too high for the selected resolution or quality level. Cutting only vignette or blood effects is unlikely to solve that case.

If average performance looks acceptable but frame delivery hitches

  • Turn V-sync off for diagnosis.
  • Use the same campaign and battle scenes after every change.
  • Check system memory and VRAM behavior while the hitch occurs.
  • Reduce particles first, followed by water, sky and terrain.

Short spikes can come from effects, memory pressure or synchronization rather than from the average rendering load. Keep the benchmark result and in-game observation separate in your notes.

If loading changes your quality settings

SEGA warns that insufficient VRAM can trigger automatic downgrades during loading. If options appear to change after a load, watch VRAM usage and avoid treating the resulting image as a stable manual preset. Lower resolution or texture-related demands where available, then load the same scene again to see whether the downgrade persists.

If the campaign is smooth but battles are not

Use a large battle as your primary test. Reduce particle effects first because smoke, fire and impacts are concentrated there. Water and sky matter in outdoor battle environments, while terrain quality can affect both the battlefield and campaign map. Keep post-processing toggles for the later part of the pass.

RAM, VRAM and system preparation

Feral identifies CPU speed, built-in RAM, graphics-card type and the in-game settings as the most important factors in smooth play. That means a graphics preset cannot compensate for every bottleneck. A fast GPU paired with exhausted system memory can still hitch, and a capable CPU cannot remove a VRAM shortage that causes loading-time downgrades.

Check system memory

Open your operating system’s task manager while the game is running and watch memory use during the benchmark and a demanding battle. SEGA specifically recommends checking how close system memory is to its limit. Close applications that consume substantial memory before testing again; leave enough free memory for the operating system and the game rather than relying on a single average reading.

Watch VRAM behavior

Monitor dedicated graphics memory during the same tests. A near-limit reading, followed by quality changes after loading, is a reason to lower resolution and the largest visual controls rather than repeatedly reselecting a high preset. The official guidance does not provide a universal VRAM threshold for the Complete Edition, so judge by observed stability and whether settings remain unchanged after loading.

Prepare storage and displays

Keep spare disk space available and close other applications before benchmarking. Feral also recommends disconnecting a second monitor if necessary. A multi-display setup can impose additional graphics or memory demands on some systems; removing that variable makes your comparison cleaner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Laptop-specific checks

  1. Plug in the charger before launching the game. Battery operation can reduce performance through the laptop’s power-management behavior.
  2. Select the system’s normal performance power mode if your operating system offers one, then restart the benchmark.
  3. Close browsers, launchers and other background applications that consume CPU or RAM.
  4. Watch CPU, RAM and VRAM behavior during a battle rather than relying only on the preset name.
  5. Repeat the test after reconnecting the charger if you previously measured on battery; do not compare those results as if they were the same hardware state.

These steps address power and contention problems before you sacrifice image quality. If the plugged-in result is still uneven, continue through the documented graphics order.

Why there is no single best preset

Resolution controls the number of pixels the GPU must render, while particles, water and sky change the cost of effects and outdoor scenery. Terrain alters ground detail, and distortion, HDR, vignette and SSAO add post-processing work. V-sync changes presentation and latency rather than simply making every frame cheaper. The best combination depends on which of those costs your system can absorb and which visual details you value.

Two computers that meet the same legacy Steam requirements can therefore need different settings. Those requirements describe a baseline for the older release and should not be presented as a performance guarantee for the 2026 Complete Edition. Use them only as historical context; use your own benchmark, campaign turn and battle to make the decision.

A concise troubleshooting checklist

  • Record resolution and preset before changing anything.
  • Run the built-in benchmark.
  • Turn V-sync off while diagnosing.
  • Adjust resolution, then particles, water and sky.
  • Reduce terrain quality if campaign or battle scenes remain heavy.
  • Disable distortion, HDR, vignette and SSAO for additional headroom.
  • Disable blood effects only if you still need the documented final step.
  • Check task-manager RAM use and VRAM behavior, especially after loading.
  • Close background applications, keep spare disk space and test without a second monitor if necessary.
  • On a laptop, connect the charger before comparing results.
  • Re-run the benchmark and verify one campaign turn plus one large battle after every meaningful change.

The Bottom Line

The dependable path to smooth Shogun 2 performance is measured adjustment: benchmark first, remove V-sync as a diagnostic variable, then work down Feral’s order from resolution and battle effects to terrain and post-processing. Confirm the final combination in the campaign and a large battle while monitoring RAM and VRAM; no preset can promise the same frame rate on every Complete Edition system.
