For the smoothest open-world survival experience, start at your monitor’s native resolution, enable the game’s quality upscaler if your GPU cannot hold the target frame rate, and lower shadows before making broad quality cuts. Then test a demanding route—dense foliage, a settlement, weather and combat—while watching GPU utilization, VRAM use and frame-time consistency. This approach preserves image quality better than dropping every setting to Low.
Use this baseline before changing individual settings
Choose the frame rate you actually want to sustain—such as 60, 90, 120 or 144 frames per second—and tune for the worst parts of the map rather than an empty starting area. Select your display’s native resolution first. If the GPU cannot maintain the target, turn on the game’s quality upscaler before reducing several quality settings at once.
MSI’s July 30, 2026 graphics guide identifies three changes that usually produce the best balance: match resolution to the GPU tier, enable DLSS or FSR when offered, and reduce Shadow Quality when more performance is needed. Ray tracing is also a high-impact setting, so it should be Off or Low when stable frame rates matter more than reflections or lighting effects.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | Lower it when | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Monitor native resolution | The GPU is consistently near full utilization and misses the target | Lower output resolution or a softer image |
| Upscaling | Quality mode | Quality cannot hold the target; try Balanced next | Fine foliage and geometry may shimmer or look less sharp |
| Ray tracing | Off or Low | Any time frame-rate stability is the priority | Ray-traced reflections, shadows or global-lighting detail |
| Shadows | Medium | You need a quick GPU performance gain | Shadow resolution, distance and softness |
| Volumetrics | Medium | Fog, clouds or light shafts are expensive in weather scenes | Atmospheric lighting detail |
| Reflections | Medium | Water, wet surfaces or interiors cause GPU dips | Reflection resolution and accuracy |
| Global illumination | Medium | Indoor scenes or time-of-day transitions cause dips | Indirect-light detail |
| Textures | High when VRAM is sufficient | Traversal stutter coincides with high VRAM use | Surface detail and texture resolution |
| View distance | Medium or High | Distant terrain, settlements or traversal scenes cause frame-rate drops | Visible distant geometry and object detail |
| Foliage | Medium or High | Forests, grasslands and storms are the worst-performing scenes | Vegetation density and draw distance |
| Motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration | Off if clarity is preferred | These are presentation choices rather than major performance levers | Post-processing effects |
| Field of view | Lowest comfortable value | You need additional performance and can accept a narrower view | Peripheral awareness and visible world area |
Apply the changes in that order only as a starting point. Different engines distribute work differently, so verify every adjustment in the game’s most demanding locations.

Find out what is limiting performance
An overlay that shows GPU utilization, CPU utilization, VRAM use, frame rate and frame time turns guessing into diagnosis. Run through the same route after each change so that weather, location and player activity do not change the result.
When the GPU is the limit
GPU utilization around 95–100% while the frame rate is below target indicates a graphics workload. Reduce resolution or switch the upscaler from Quality to Balanced first. If that is not enough, test ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, reflections, global illumination and foliage in that order. Lowering view distance can help as well, especially in scenes with extensive terrain and object detail.
When the CPU or game engine is the limit
If GPU utilization is low but frame rate remains low, the processor, simulation or engine thread may be limiting output. Reduce view distance, NPC distance, foliage distance and other simulation-heavy controls where the game exposes them. Close unnecessary background applications and repeat the same route. Lowering texture quality will not fix a CPU-bound scene.
When traversal stutters despite a good average FPS
A high average can conceal long frame times while the game streams a new area. Watch VRAM use and test one step lower on textures. Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD, then cap the frame rate to a value the system can hold consistently. A stable 60 fps with even frame times feels better than an uncapped average that repeatedly falls from 100 to 45 fps.
Which settings should you lower first?
Resolution and upscaling
Native resolution gives the clearest interface, terrain and foliage. If the GPU is saturated, a quality upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output. Start with Quality mode. Move to Balanced only when Quality misses the target, and inspect thin branches, grass, fences and distant geometry for shimmer. DLSS, FSR and XeSS are all possible options, but availability and image quality vary by game and hardware.
Dropping output resolution directly to 1440p or 1080p is a valid fallback when the GPU cannot sustain the target. It is most noticeable on a high-resolution monitor, so compare the result while moving through foliage rather than while looking at a static wall.

Ray tracing
Ray tracing can consume a large portion of the GPU budget in open worlds. Turn it Off or Low for competitive or survival play where consistent input response matters. Re-enable individual ray-traced effects only after the non-ray-traced settings meet your frame-rate target.

Shadow Quality is usually the best first conventional reduction. Medium often preserves convincing contact shadows while avoiding the cost of high-resolution cascades, long shadow distances and soft filtering. Shadows become especially expensive when the sun, fire, foliage and many structures are visible together.
Volumetrics, reflections and global illumination
Fog, smoke, cloud layers, water reflections and indirect lighting can combine into large GPU spikes during storms, sunsets and indoor-to-outdoor transitions. Test Medium first, then Low if those scenes still miss the target. Rockstar Games lists volumetrics, reflections and global illumination among the advanced controls worth testing after using its quality slider.
Textures and VRAM
Texture quality is primarily a video-memory decision rather than a direct shader-cost setting. Keep High when your GPU has enough free VRAM. If streaming stutter appears and the overlay shows memory pressure, lower textures one step and retest.
NVIDIA’s Dying Light testing observed approximately 2 GB of VRAM use on Medium textures and about 3.3–4 GB on High in its test setup; heavy stutter indicated that the memory limit had been reached. Those figures are an example from one game, not a universal requirement. Your own overlay is the authority for your game, resolution and texture pack.

View distance
View distance controls how far terrain, vegetation, buildings and objects remain detailed. It is often one of the largest open-world costs because it increases both geometry and draw-call work. NVIDIA’s Dying Light guide found that lowering view distance could cut 1920×1080 frame rates by more than half in its test. That percentage is game-specific, but it illustrates why this setting deserves an early test when traversal performance is poor.

Reduce view distance one step at a time. Check a hilltop, a settlement entrance and a fast-travel or vehicle route; these reveal missing geometry and pop-in more clearly than an enclosed room.
Foliage
Dense vegetation combines geometry, alpha-tested leaves, shadows and animation. Forests, grasslands and storms are therefore useful stress tests. In one NVIDIA Destiny 2 scene, High foliage was 8.7 fps slower than the guide’s reference, while Medium was only 4.6 fps slower than Low and looked acceptable during play. The exact cost will differ by engine, but Medium is often a better compromise than disabling vegetation entirely.
Field of view
A wider field of view shows more of the world at once, increasing the amount of geometry and foliage the renderer must process. Use the lowest value that preserves awareness of threats and nearby objects. NVIDIA measured an 11.7 fps spread between 55° and 105° in one scenario. That is not a universal result, but it demonstrates that FOV can be a meaningful performance control in some games.

Post-processing effects
Motion blur, film grain and chromatic aberration are separate controls in many games. Disable them if you prefer a clean image or find them uncomfortable. They are usually presentation choices, so change them for clarity rather than expecting a large frame-rate gain.
How to stop stuttering in an open-world survival game
- Reproduce the hitch. Use a repeatable route that includes dense foliage, a settlement, weather effects and combat. Note whether the hitch occurs during movement, camera turns, loading or combat.
- Check frame time, not only average FPS. A sudden frame-time spike explains a hitch that an average counter can hide.
- Check VRAM during the hitch. If memory is near capacity, lower textures one step and restart the game if it does not immediately release allocations.
- Verify storage. Test the game from an SSD, particularly when stutter happens as new terrain or buildings stream in.
- Reduce view distance or foliage. These settings can lower the amount of new geometry and vegetation that must be streamed and rendered.
- Set a frame-rate cap. Choose a cap the system can maintain in the demanding route instead of the highest number seen indoors.
- Retest after one or two changes. If the hitch remains with low GPU utilization, investigate CPU load, background processes and engine limits rather than continuing to lower image quality.
Do not assume every hitch is a graphics-setting problem. Shader compilation, asset streaming, CPU simulation and background tasks can all create spikes. The overlay and a repeatable route help separate those causes.
How to set a frame cap and adaptive sync
A frame cap near the display’s refresh rate reduces unnecessary rendering and can make frame times more consistent. If the game offers an in-game limiter, use it first; otherwise use the driver or display software. Pick a limit that remains achievable in your stress route rather than one reached only in a quiet interior.

Enable FreeSync or G-SYNC when the monitor and GPU support a compatible mode. Adaptive sync matches the monitor’s refresh timing to the GPU’s output, reducing tearing without the latency feel associated with traditional VSync. MSI describes adaptive sync as a way to match refresh and output; compatibility depends on the specific monitor, connection and GPU, so confirm the supported range in the monitor’s manual.
When comparing monitors or graphics hardware for an open-world game, evaluate refresh rate together with target resolution, VRAM capacity, upscaler support, ray-tracing capability and frame-time behavior. A high-refresh display cannot make a CPU-limited game render faster, and a powerful GPU cannot use a refresh rate the connection or monitor does not support.
A repeatable graphics-tuning procedure
- Choose the target. Set the native resolution and decide whether the goal is 60, 90, 120 or another sustainable frame rate.
- Select a sensible preset. Start with High or the game’s recommended preset rather than changing every control immediately.
- Use the built-in benchmark. Rockstar Games support recommends running its Graphics Benchmark after experimenting with the quality slider and advanced settings. Its quality slider analyzes system capability and adjusts background parameters according to the selected resolution and performance-versus-quality preference.
- Enable an upscaler if needed. Try Quality, then Balanced only if the target remains out of reach. Inspect foliage and fine geometry for shimmer.
- Run a demanding route. Include a forest, settlement, weather event and combat. Repeat the same path after each change.
- Identify the bottleneck. Use GPU utilization, CPU utilization, VRAM use, average FPS and 1% lows or frame-time consistency.
- Change one or two settings. For a GPU limit, test ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, reflections, global illumination, foliage and view distance. For a CPU limit, test distance and simulation options.
- Set the cap and adaptive sync. Cap the frame rate near the monitor’s refresh range at a value the stress route can hold.
- Stop at the best trade-off. Do not keep lowering settings once the target is stable and the remaining dips are less distracting than the image defects created by further cuts.
Rockstar also cautions that settings have different impacts depending on system configuration. Treat any benchmark result as a guide for that game and machine, not a guarantee for another open-world title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare presets, GPUs or monitors
Average FPS alone is inadequate for an open-world comparison. Record the same route and compare:
- Target resolution and internal upscaling mode.
- Average FPS and 1% lows.
- Frame-time consistency while traversing the map.
- VRAM capacity and observed memory use.
- Image quality in foliage and distant geometry.
- Input latency at the chosen cap.
- Ray-tracing support and the cost of enabling it.
- Upscaler availability and quality on the specific GPU.
- Monitor refresh rate and FreeSync or G-SYNC compatibility.
Keep the resolution, game version, route, weather and settings identical. A result measured in a quiet interior should not be presented as representative of a forest, settlement or storm.
Common mistakes that make performance worse
Lowering every setting at once
You lose image quality without learning which control was responsible for the gain. Restore the preset and change one or two options while recording results.

Using average FPS as the only metric
Traversal hitches and combat spikes are frame-time problems. Track 1% lows or a frame-time graph and include the worst route in your test.
Keeping textures low when the GPU has spare VRAM
Textures can remain High when memory headroom exists. Lower them when the overlay and stutter pattern indicate a VRAM limit, not simply because another setting is expensive.
Widening FOV without checking the cost
A very wide FOV renders more of the world. Use the narrowest comfortable value, then test again in foliage and settlements.

Expecting a monitor upgrade to fix a bottleneck
Refresh rate and adaptive sync improve presentation and pacing, but they do not remove a CPU, GPU, VRAM or streaming limit. Match the monitor’s resolution and refresh target to what the system can sustain.
Quick decision guide
- GPU at 95–100% and FPS low: enable Quality upscaling, then reduce ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, reflections, global illumination or foliage.
- GPU low and FPS low: reduce view distance, NPC or foliage distance, simulation-heavy settings and background load; investigate CPU or engine limits.
- Stutter while moving: monitor VRAM, lower textures if memory is full, use an SSD, reduce streaming-heavy distance settings and cap the frame rate.
- Image looks soft: return from Balanced to Quality upscaling or native resolution, then lower shadows or volumetrics instead.
- Foliage shimmers: inspect the upscaler mode, foliage quality and anti-aliasing; use Quality upscaling before accepting a sharper but unstable image.
- Tearing or uneven delivery: enable compatible FreeSync or G-SYNC and cap FPS near the monitor’s refresh rate.
What “smooth” should mean in practice
Smooth performance is a stable frame time through the locations that stress an open-world engine, not the highest counter reading in an empty room. Start with native resolution and High textures where VRAM allows, use Quality upscaling when the GPU needs help, and make targeted reductions to shadows, ray tracing, volumetrics, reflections, foliage and view distance. Validate the result with a repeatable route, a benchmark when available and an overlay that exposes utilization, memory and frame-time behavior.
