For Sony’s current PC remasters, an RTX 4070 Ti-class card is the sensible 1440p starting point, an RTX 4080-class card is the clearest choice for 4K, and an RTX 5090 is the premium option if your priority is future DLSS 5 software. Those recommendations come from Sony’s published targets for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, The Last of Us Part I, and God of War Ragnarök.

There is an important qualification: NVIDIA has identified GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware as DLSS 5-capable, but no official NVIDIA or Sony information currently confirms DLSS 5 integration in those three remasters. Buy for the performance targets the games publish today, and treat DLSS 5 as a future capability rather than a guaranteed feature in an existing Sony title.

Quick recommendations

Use case Recommended class Why it fits the published targets DLSS 5 position
1440p Sony remasters RTX 4070 Ti class It sits above Horizon Forbidden West’s RTX 3070 requirement for 1440p/60 High and is the GPU Sony names for God of War Ragnarök’s 4K/60 High target. Not RTX 50 Series hardware, so it is not in NVIDIA’s stated DLSS 5 eligibility group.
4K with current Sony ports RTX 4080 class Sony lists it for Horizon Forbidden West at 4K/60 Very High. The Last of Us Part I also lists it for 60 fps at 1440p. Choose it for current rasterized game targets, not for DLSS 5 support.
Premium, future-facing purchase RTX 5090 It is a current RTX 50 Series product and therefore belongs to NVIDIA’s stated DLSS 5-capable hardware family. Hardware eligibility does not prove that any particular Sony remaster will add DLSS 5.
Lowest-cost published 1440p baseline RTX 3070 class It is the named Horizon Forbidden West target for 1440p/60 High. It is outside the RTX 50 Series eligibility described by NVIDIA.

The table is a buying map, not a universal benchmark. Sony publishes different targets for different games and presets, and there is no single official table showing identical 1440p and 4K tests across every Sony remaster.

What DLSS 5 changes—and what it does not

DLSS 5 is a capability of supported hardware and software

NVIDIA’s published DLSS 5 material identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards as supported hardware and says the model will continue to receive updates. That establishes a hardware eligibility line: an RTX 5090 is in the named family, while an RTX 4080-class or RTX 4070 Ti-class card is not described as DLSS 5 hardware.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Eligibility is not the same as universal game support. A game needs the developer’s implementation, or an officially supported driver path, before a DLSS 5 option can appear. Installing an RTX 50 Series card cannot add a menu option to a game that has not integrated the feature.

The October 2026 model update

NVIDIA’s October 2026 update says the DLSS 5 footprint was reduced by 24% to approximately 118 million parameters and that 4K VRAM use was reduced by 20%. Those are NVIDIA’s model-level figures; they are not a measured frame-rate result for Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part I, or God of War Ragnarök.

NVIDIA also quoted Todd Howard, studio head and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, calling DLSS 5 a major step in graphics innovation. That statement describes the technology’s direction, not support in the Sony games covered here.

The status of Sony remasters

No official NVIDIA or Sony source currently confirms DLSS 5 integration for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, The Last of Us Part I, God of War Ragnarök, or another Sony remaster in this guide. Check the game’s own graphics settings and current developer announcements after installation. If DLSS 5 is absent, use the game’s supported rendering and upscaling options rather than assuming the RTX 50 Series card is malfunctioning.

Official GPU targets from Sony’s PC requirements

These are the specific targets that anchor the recommendations. They are vendor-published goals, not a standardized laboratory comparison, so a target for one game should not be treated as a guaranteed result in another.

Game and source date Resolution and frame-rate target Preset GPU named by Sony How to interpret it
Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024 1440p at 60 fps High RTX 3070 This is the clearest published 1440p/60 reference in the group.
Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024 4K at 60 fps Very High RTX 4080 This is the strongest direct 4K/60 requirement among the listed remasters.
Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024 4K at 30 fps Target tier listed with the game’s published requirements Not separately stated in the supplied requirements Do not infer a different GPU from the 30-fps line; Sony does not provide a separate card in the cited figure.
The Last of Us Part I, Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2023 1440p at 60 fps Target listed in the PC requirements RTX 4080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX This game’s official 1440p/60 line is substantially more demanding than Horizon Forbidden West’s RTX 3070 line.
God of War Ragnarök, Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024 4K at 60 fps High RTX 4070 Ti This is why the RTX 4070 Ti class is a credible 1440p-to-4K compromise.

Official requirement pages do not provide a common VRAM-headroom figure for these rows. They also do not establish that one card will deliver the same frame rate at the same preset in all three games.

Best card for 1440p Sony remasters: RTX 4070 Ti class

An RTX 4070 Ti-class card is the most balanced recommendation when 1440p is your primary display resolution and you want room beyond the minimum published tier. Horizon Forbidden West names an RTX 3070 for 1440p/60 High; moving to the RTX 4070 Ti class gives you a higher performance tier than that specific requirement. Sony also names the RTX 4070 Ti for God of War Ragnarök’s 4K/60 High target, making it a reasonable bridge for players who may occasionally connect the PC to a 4K screen.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5060 WINDFORCE OC 8G Graphics Card, Cooling System, 8GB 128-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, Manufactured by NVIDIA, DisplayPort & HDMI - Video Output Interface, GV-N5060WF2OC-8GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
  • Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

The qualification is The Last of Us Part I. Its published requirement for 60 fps at 1440p names an RTX 4080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX, so an RTX 4070 Ti should not be presented as a guaranteed match for that game’s official target. If The Last of Us Part I is your main title and a locked 60 fps at 1440p is non-negotiable, use the RTX 4080-class recommendation instead.

Who should choose this tier

  • You play mostly at 2560×1440 and want to exceed the RTX 3070-level Horizon target.
  • You want a card that Sony associates with a 4K/60 High target in God of War Ragnarök, without buying the highest premium tier.
  • You accept that The Last of Us Part I has a higher official 1440p/60 GPU requirement.

How to set expectations

Start with the preset named in the game’s requirement, then measure your actual frame rate in a repeatable area. If performance falls short, reduce the most demanding visual options one at a time and retest. Do not use Horizon Forbidden West’s RTX 3070 line as a promise that every Sony port will run at 1440p/60 on the same card.

Best card for 4K today: RTX 4080 class

The RTX 4080 class is the clearest choice for a current 4K Sony-remaster build because Horizon Forbidden West explicitly pairs it with 4K/60 at the Very High preset. It is also the GPU Sony lists for The Last of Us Part I’s 1440p/60 target, which indicates that this title has a much heavier official requirement than the Horizon 1440p tier.

That does not turn the RTX 4080 requirement into a guaranteed 4K result for The Last of Us Part I. Sony’s cited line is 1440p/60, not 4K/60. For that game, treat the RTX 4080 class as the published 1440p/60 reference and validate your preferred 4K settings in the actual build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why this is the practical 4K tier

  • It is the only card class in the supplied Sony requirements directly attached to a 4K/60 Very High target.
  • It leaves more room than the RTX 4070 Ti-class recommendation for demanding presets, although the official pages do not quantify VRAM headroom.
  • It is a purchase based on current Sony targets rather than an unconfirmed promise of DLSS 5 support.

When an RTX 4080-class purchase is more appropriate than an RTX 5090

If your library is mainly the existing Sony PC catalog and you are buying for a 4K display now, the RTX 4080 class aligns directly with Sony’s published Horizon target. Paying for an RTX 5090 solely because a Sony remaster might receive DLSS 5 later is a speculative upgrade; the current Sony requirements do not establish that future feature or quantify a benefit from it.

Premium future-facing option: RTX 5090

The RTX 5090 is the premium choice for a buyer who values access to future DLSS 5 games as much as today’s Sony ports. NVIDIA places RTX 50 Series GPUs in the DLSS 5-supported hardware family and specifically identifies the RTX 5090 among qualifying products.

That makes the RTX 5090 a future-capability recommendation, not evidence that DLSS 5 works in Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part I, or God of War Ragnarök. If a game does not expose DLSS 5 after current drivers and game updates are installed, the card will run it using the features that title actually supports.

Choose the RTX 5090 when

  • You plan to play upcoming PC games that officially advertise DLSS 5.
  • You want the largest performance margin available and are comfortable paying for capability that current Sony remasters may not use.
  • You expect to keep the card through several software generations rather than optimizing only for the three published Sony targets.

Do not choose it on this assumption

Do not assume that an RTX 5090 automatically enables DLSS 5 in every game, or that the October 2026 model update’s 20% 4K VRAM reduction translates directly into a 20% frame-rate increase in a Sony port. NVIDIA’s update describes the model footprint and memory use, not a game-specific benchmark.

Game-by-game buying guidance

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition

For 1440p/60 High, Sony’s named card is the RTX 3070. For 4K/60 Very High, it names the RTX 4080. Those two lines create a straightforward split: an RTX 4070 Ti-class card is a sensible step-up for 1440p, while an RTX 4080-class card is the direct 4K recommendation.

Sony also lists a 4K/30 target tier, but the cited requirement does not attach a separate GPU to that line. Do not convert it into an unofficial card recommendation.

The Last of Us Part I

The official 1440p/60 target names an RTX 4080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX. This is the most important warning against using a generic “1440p card” rule: the RTX 4070 Ti class may be excellent for other Sony ports, but Sony’s own requirement for this game points higher.

If this is your primary title, make the RTX 4080 class your minimum planning tier for the stated 1440p/60 goal, then adjust the preset and other settings based on your own system.

God of War Ragnarök

Sony lists an RTX 4070 Ti for 4K/60 at the High preset. That makes the RTX 4070 Ti class unusually strong on paper for a 1440p player: it is tied to a published 4K target in this game, while still sitting above Horizon Forbidden West’s RTX 3070 1440p tier.

The requirement is specific to 4K/60 High. It should not be read as a guarantee for a higher preset, a different resolution, or another Sony port.

VRAM headroom: what is known and what is not

The supplied Sony requirements identify GPU models but do not state a comparable VRAM allowance for each target. That means a precise “this card has enough VRAM for every remaster” ranking cannot be supported from the official figures alone.

Use the following practical approach instead:

  1. Begin with the game’s published GPU and preset combination.
  2. Watch for texture-streaming warnings, hitching, failed asset loads, or a sharp increase in memory usage during longer sessions.
  3. If memory pressure appears, lower texture-related settings first and retest before changing the entire preset.
  4. Keep a margin for background applications and future patches rather than tuning until the card is completely full.

NVIDIA’s October 2026 statement about a 20% reduction in 4K DLSS 5 VRAM use applies to the DLSS 5 model. It does not replace the game’s own texture and asset memory requirements, and it cannot be used to calculate the VRAM needed by a Sony remaster that has not adopted DLSS 5.

A decision framework before you buy

  1. Choose the display target. For 1440p, start at the RTX 4070 Ti class. For a 4K/60 Horizon Forbidden West build, start at the RTX 4080 class. For future DLSS 5 software, consider the RTX 5090.
  2. Identify your hardest game. If The Last of Us Part I is central to your library, its RTX 4080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX requirement for 1440p/60 should outweigh the lower Horizon requirement.
  3. Set the preset goal. High, Very High, resolution, and frame-rate targets are separate variables. Match the card to the exact combination you want, not just to a game title.
  4. Separate today’s need from future features. Buy an RTX 4080-class card for the published 4K Sony target. Buy an RTX 5090 when DLSS 5 eligibility and long-term headroom matter enough to justify a premium.
  5. Leave room for evidence. Because no standardized official benchmark covers every remaster at both resolutions, plan to validate the final settings in your own installation.

Setup and validation checklist

After installing the card, use this sequence to avoid confusing a software limitation with a hardware problem:

  1. Install the current graphics driver and reboot before judging performance.
  2. Update the game to its current build.
  3. Record the game, resolution, frame-rate goal, and preset you are testing.
  4. Check the graphics menu for a DLSS 5 option. If it is not listed, do not assume the RTX 5090 installation failed; the title may simply not support the feature.
  5. Test a repeatable gameplay section rather than relying on a menu or a short scene.
  6. Change one setting at a time and note the effect on frame rate, image quality, and memory behavior.
  7. Keep separate profiles for 1440p and 4K if you move between a monitor and a television.

Common buying mistakes

Assuming DLSS 5 is automatic

RTX 50 Series eligibility is a hardware statement. A developer still has to integrate DLSS 5, so the feature may not appear in a Sony remaster.

Using one game’s requirement as a universal benchmark

Horizon Forbidden West’s RTX 3070 1440p/60 line and God of War Ragnarök’s RTX 4070 Ti 4K/60 line describe different workloads. The Last of Us Part I’s RTX 4080 1440p/60 requirement is a separate warning that Sony ports can vary considerably.

Buying for an unverified future patch

An RTX 5090 can be justified by its RTX 50 Series DLSS 5 eligibility and your broader future-game plans. It is not justified by claiming that a specific Sony remaster will definitely receive DLSS 5 when no official confirmation exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the exact preset

A card recommended for 4K/60 High is not automatically a 4K/60 Very High card. Keep resolution, frame rate, and preset together whenever you compare requirements.

Final recommendation

Choose an RTX 4070 Ti-class GPU for a 1440p-focused Sony library, unless The Last of Us Part I’s official 1440p/60 target is your deciding workload. Choose an RTX 4080-class GPU for the most defensible 4K purchase based on Sony’s current requirements. Choose an RTX 5090 only when future DLSS 5-capable games and long-term headroom are central to the purchase; its presence in the RTX 50 Series does not confirm DLSS 5 support in today’s Sony remasters.
