The best starting point depends on which Shogun 2 build you own. The original build still uses the older renderer and Feral Interactive’s legacy performance guidance; the 2026 Complete Edition is a separate 64-bit build with updated rendering, 1440p and 4K interface scaling, borderless fullscreen and newer upscaling options. Do not apply a legacy preset to the Complete Edition as though it were a measured result.
For the original build, keep your monitor’s native resolution if performance is acceptable, disable or reduce the settings near the top of Feral’s performance order first, and change one option at a time. This preserves image quality while showing which setting is actually limiting your system. There is no official modern-PC frame-rate benchmark or universal best preset, so the guide below uses the vendor’s relative performance ranking rather than invented FPS targets.
Identify your Shogun 2 build first
Creative Assembly’s 2026-09-29 Complete Edition announcement says its changes apply only to that edition and that the original Shogun 2 build remains available. The two builds should be treated as different software when choosing settings.

Feral Interactive’s readme describes the older build’s settings and ranks them by expected performance impact. Its advice is useful for deciding what to lower, but it is not a current benchmark on modern hardware.

Complete Edition
The Complete Edition adds a 64-bit upgrade, 1440p and 4K UI scaling, borderless fullscreen, improved rendering and anti-aliasing that includes DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1, plus updated textures, models, shadows, lighting, fog and skyboxes. Those changes can alter both image quality and frame-time behavior, so a setting that was expensive in the original build should not automatically be assigned the same cost in the Complete Edition. The announcement also lists more than 50 playable minor factions; that is a content feature, not a performance measurement.
Unless a section explicitly says otherwise, the ordered settings advice below refers to the original build.
A sensible starting point for the original build
Use this sequence when you want the largest likely performance improvement with the fewest unnecessary visual sacrifices. “Lower first” reflects Feral’s ordering, not a guarantee for every modern CPU and graphics card.

Start at the display’s native resolution. Lower it only when you have confirmed that the higher resolution is causing unacceptable slowdown.
- Test vertical synchronisation. V-sync off is faster in Feral’s list, but it can introduce tearing. If tearing is distracting, turn it back on and accept the possible performance cost.
- Reduce particle effects. Move from Ultra to Medium, then Low if needed.
- Choose anti-aliasing deliberately. MLAA is slower than None. Disable it when performance matters more than edge smoothing.
- Reduce texture filtering. Anisotropic 16x is the slowest of the listed choices, 4x is faster, and Trilinear is fastest.
- Lower texture quality. Ultra costs more than Medium, which costs more than Low. This is often a visible image-quality trade rather than a first choice when the problem is CPU-limited.
- Disable depth of field. Feral lists Low as slower than Off.
- Lower the shader model. Shader model 3 at the high setting is slower than shader model 3 at the low setting.
- Reduce unit and building detail. Ultra is slowest, followed by Medium and Low.
- Reduce shadows. Ultra is slowest, Medium is faster, and Off is fastest.
- Reduce unit size and maximum fleet size. Ultra or Large is slowest, Medium is faster, and Small is fastest.
- Lower environmental detail. Trees, grass, water and sky are listed from Ultra (slowest) to Medium and then Low or Off where the option exists.
- Lower terrain quality. High is slower than Low.
- Disable optional effects. Distortion or heat haze, HDR or light bloom, vignette, SSAO or ambient shadow and blood effects all run slower when enabled. Blood effects require the Blood Pack DLC.
After each change, play the same type of scene for long enough to notice whether camera movement, a large battle or a campaign view improved. Keep a setting when its visual benefit is worth its cost on your machine.
What each graphics option trades away
The following table turns Feral’s relative order into practical choices. It does not promise a particular frame rate.

Where to change the settings
Feral identifies two locations. Before launching a campaign, open the pre-game Options window and choose Display. From the game’s main menu, use Options → Graphics. The machine and the interaction between selected settings can restrict which controls appear, so a missing option is not necessarily a configuration error.
- Close other applications before launching the game.
- Open the pre-game Display page or the in-game Options → Graphics page.
- Record your current settings so you can reverse a change.
- Change one option, beginning with resolution or V-sync only when you have a clear reason to test them.
- Apply the setting and reproduce the same type of scene.
- Keep the change only if the improvement justifies the visual or gameplay compromise.
This one-at-a-time process is a practical way to use Feral’s ordered list; it is not a controlled benchmark or a claim about a particular frame rate.
Resolution and display decisions
Why native resolution is the default
A monitor’s native resolution is normally the sharpest choice. Feral’s legacy list places 2560×1440 below 1280×1024 and 1024×768 for performance, but those figures describe an older test context, not current graphics cards. Lowering resolution can help when rendering is the bottleneck, yet it makes text, terrain and unit silhouettes softer.
When to lower resolution
Lower it when you have already confirmed that resolution is the limiting factor or when you prefer stable movement to sharpness. Use the nearest sensible display mode rather than jumping immediately to the lowest value. Remember that the legacy store listing names 1024×768 as the minimum and 1280×1024 as the recommended minimum display; these are compatibility requirements, not advice that a modern monitor should be run at those resolutions.
Complete Edition scaling
The Complete Edition specifically adds interface scaling for 1440p and 4K. That improves readability at high resolution, but it does not establish how expensive every rendering option is on your computer. Test its resolution, upscaling and anti-aliasing controls independently.

CPU, memory and graphics hardware still matter
Feral’s wording is explicit: “The most important factors in determining how smoothly Total War: SHOGUN 2 plays are your CPU speed, the amount of built-in RAM, the type of graphics card in your computer and the in-game settings you select.” Strategy games can become processor-limited during large battles or when many units are visible, so lowering image quality alone may not remove every slowdown.
Legacy Steam requirements
Steam’s undated legacy listing specifies the following baseline:

These specifications explain what the old build expected at release. They are not a modern-PC performance guarantee and do not show that a contemporary graphics-card upgrade is necessary.
Basic system preparation
- Close browsers, launchers and other programs that consume CPU or memory.
- Keep adequate free space on the game’s main disk, as Feral advises.
- For the Mac version, Feral specifically notes that disconnecting a second monitor may improve performance. That advice is limited to Mac in the readme and should not be generalized to Windows.
Complete Edition: how to approach its newer options
The Complete Edition’s 64-bit code and updated assets mean the original build’s settings order is a reference point, not a tested preset. Begin at native resolution and the default quality settings, then inspect the edition’s own labels.
Borderless fullscreen
Use borderless fullscreen when fast desktop switching is more important than the behavior of exclusive fullscreen. If you notice inconsistent frame pacing, compare the two modes on your system rather than assuming one is universally faster.

DLSSSR and AMD FSR 3.1
These anti-aliasing or upscaling options are named in the official announcement. Their useful quality mode and performance cost depend on the selected resolution and hardware. Test one upscaler at a time, compare distant unit edges and text, and keep the option that produces the clearest stable image for your display.
Updated textures, shadows and lighting
Higher-quality assets can make the Complete Edition look better while changing memory and rendering demands. If a battle becomes slow, lower shadows, environmental detail and post-processing individually before sacrificing resolution, unless your system is clearly graphics-limited.

Large battles slow down but the campaign map is fine
Reduce unit size or maximum fleet size, then unit detail and shadows. These settings affect the amount of battlefield work and are more relevant to a combat-only slowdown than texture filtering.
The game is sharp but still stutters
Close background applications, check free disk space and test lower unit or building detail. A processor or memory limitation can remain after reducing resolution, because not every slowdown is caused by pixel rendering.

The image looks blurry after improving performance
Restore native resolution first. Then raise texture quality or filtering one step at a time while leaving the settings that produced the clearest improvement at their lower values.

You see tearing
Enable vertical synchronisation and retest the same scene. Feral lists V-sync as slower, so compare the smoother presentation against the performance cost rather than treating either setting as universally correct.
A setting is unavailable
Check whether you are using the original build or Complete Edition, and whether the selected machine profile or another option has restricted it. Feral says hardware and interactions between settings can limit availability.
A second monitor seems to affect a Mac installation
Disconnect the additional display only as a Mac-specific troubleshooting step supported by Feral’s readme. There is no equivalent Windows finding in the cited material.
What the available evidence can and cannot establish
No consulted source supplies a controlled modern-PC benchmark, an exact frame-rate target or a universally best preset. Feral supplies a relative order of likely performance impact for the original build; Steam supplies legacy requirements; and Creative Assembly documents the Complete Edition’s feature changes. Use those facts to make a measured adjustment on your own machine, not to infer that a particular GPU or CPU will produce a guaranteed result.
A practical decision framework
- Need the sharpest image: keep native resolution, retain texture quality and filtering, and lower particles, shadows, post-processing and environmental detail first.
- Need smoother large battles: reduce unit size, maximum fleet size, unit detail and shadows before lowering every texture setting.
- Need the fastest possible legacy configuration: move down Feral’s list in order, using lower resolution, V-sync off, Low particles, no MLAA, Trilinear filtering, Low textures, Off depth of field and progressively lower detail.
- Using Complete Edition: treat its upscaling, borderless mode and updated visual options as a separate tuning exercise; do not describe the legacy order as a Complete Edition benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the old Steam requirements tell me whether Shogun 2 will run well on Windows 10 or 11?
No. They are legacy compatibility specifications for the original release and do not guarantee a particular result on a current operating system or hardware configuration.
Should I buy a new graphics card to fix Shogun 2 performance?
The available specifications do not establish that a modern upgrade is necessary or identify a suitable model. First determine whether lowering graphics settings changes the slowdown; processor-heavy battles may not respond to a GPU change.
Is the Complete Edition just a graphics patch for the original build?
The official announcement treats it as a separate build and says the original remains accessible. It lists 64-bit code, updated rendering and assets, new display scaling and other changes that should be tuned separately.
