There is no single best Winlator preset for every Android phone or Windows game. The reliable approach is to match the graphics driver to your GPU, choose a wrapper that fits the game’s Direct3D version, start at a modest resolution, and change one setting at a time. Your phone model, chipset, Android version, Winlator build, game engine, graphics API, thermal state and background activity all affect the result.
What “best settings” actually means
Running a Windows game locally on Android is a compatibility and translation task, not the same as running a native Android game. Winlator describes its stack as Wine plus Box86/Box64 and Vulkan. Wine translates Windows interfaces, Box86 or Box64 handles x86 code, and Vulkan provides the graphics path when the selected driver and wrapper support it. A game can therefore launch successfully yet perform poorly, show rendering errors, or become unstable after a seemingly helpful tweak.
The practical goal is not a universal frame-rate target. It is the best balance of readable image quality, acceptable input latency, correct rendering and repeatable stability for one device-and-game combination. The Winlator project documentation says results vary with the device, environmental conditions, simultaneous processing and processor capabilities. Treat every recommendation below as a controlled starting point rather than a promise of a particular frame rate.

Collect the information that determines your settings
Before creating a container or shortcut, record the variables that make advice reproducible. Include the exact phone or handheld model, chipset and GPU, Android version, Winlator build, game version, game engine if known, and graphics API or Direct3D generation if the title documents it.
#1 Best Overall

- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
- Device and GPU: Snapdragon phones with Adreno graphics have a different driver path from devices using other GPU architectures. Exynos and MediaTek compatibility should be treated cautiously because support depends on the specific processor and build.
- Winlator build: Menu labels, bundled drivers and presets can change. A setting described in an older guide may not exist or may have a different name in your build.
- Game API: A Direct3D 9, 10 or 11 game has different wrapper options from a Direct3D 12 game. If the API is unknown, use the game’s documentation, launcher information or known engine behavior instead of guessing.
- Thermal and background state: Test after the phone has cooled, close unrelated apps and keep the same power mode. Background processing can change the result even when the Winlator configuration is identical.
Build a baseline before tuning
A baseline gives you something to compare against and makes it possible to undo a bad change. Create a per-game shortcut or profile rather than changing a global configuration used by every title.
- Open Winlator and create or select the container used for the game.
- Set the game to its low or medium internal quality preset and choose a modest output resolution. The Winlator setup guide published in 2024 uses 960×544 at 16:9 as an example starting point; it is not a tested optimum for every phone or a current universal recommendation.
- Launch the game and record whether it starts, reaches the menu, renders 3D scenes correctly and remains stable for several minutes.
- Write down the wrapper, driver, Box64 preset, resolution and in-game quality settings. Change only one variable on the next run.
- Keep the working profile so you can restore it after an experiment causes a crash, missing textures or slower performance.
Do not judge a configuration solely from the title screen. A setup that appears smooth in a menu may fail in a busy scene, during shader compilation or after the device heats up. Use a repeatable section of gameplay for each comparison.
Choose the Vulkan driver for the GPU architecture
The driver is the first hardware-specific decision. Winlator’s overview identifies Turnip as the optimized path for Snapdragon Adreno GPUs and states Vulkan 1.1 or newer support in its product description. The project README also describes Vortek as an experimental driver for processors that are incompatible with Turnip.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Device situation | Driver to try | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon with Adreno GPU | Turnip, when offered by the current build | It is the project’s Adreno-focused option. The exact driver revision still matters, so keep the version that renders the target game correctly. |
| Processor incompatible with Turnip | Vortek, if the build includes it | The README calls Vortek experimental. Expect title-specific compatibility and test for visual errors and stability. |
| Exynos, MediaTek or another non-Adreno device | Use the compatible driver exposed by your build; do not force Turnip | The overview warns of limitations on MediaTek and Exynos hardware. There is no evidence here for a universal driver or performance level on those devices. |
A driver that produces a higher speed in one game may fail to render another. If a title boots to a black screen, displays corrupted textures or crashes before its first 3D scene, revert to the previous driver and test the wrapper separately. Installing several experimental drivers at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.
Select the graphics wrapper according to the game API
Winlator’s October 2024 setup guide presents three common wrapper choices. The labels and available versions can change, so use the names shown in your current build and regard the guide’s descriptions as a starting point.

| Wrapper | Intended use in the guide | When to test it | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| WineD3D | Broad compatibility | The game does not work with a translation layer, its Direct3D version is uncertain, or correctness matters more than maximum speed. | It may be slower, but can be a useful fallback when another wrapper fails to launch or renders incorrectly. |
| DXVK | Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 | The title uses one of those APIs and the current build supplies a compatible DXVK option. | It can improve performance for supported games, but is not interchangeable with a Direct3D 12 solution. |
| VKD3D | Direct3D 12 | The game requires Direct3D 12 and the build offers a working VKD3D configuration. | Compatibility depends on the game, Vulkan driver and device. A Direct3D 9–11 title should not be moved to VKD3D merely because it is newer. |
Test a wrapper by checking three things: does the game reach gameplay, are lighting and textures correct, and does it remain stable after a sustained session? If changing the wrapper fixes one symptom but introduces another, keep the profile with the fewest serious faults rather than assuming the fastest menu is best.
Resolution is usually the safest performance control
Rendering fewer pixels reduces the GPU workload, although the gain depends on whether the game is GPU-limited. Lowering resolution can also make text and interfaces harder to read on a small screen, so reduce it gradually.
Start with a modest 16:9 output
The 960×544 value in the 2024 setup guide is an example starting point. It is not a benchmark result and should not be presented as the ideal setting for a particular phone. If the game is stable but slow, try a lower output; if it is fast enough and blurry, try a higher output or restore the game’s native scaling while reducing expensive effects.
Change one resolution control at a time
- First adjust Winlator’s output or resolution-scaling setting.
- Then test the game’s own render scale or resolution option, if available.
- Only after that lower demanding effects such as shadows, reflections, volumetric fog, ambient occlusion or anti-aliasing.
Keep the aspect ratio that the game expects where possible. A stretched image can look worse than a slightly lower native proportion, and some older titles offer separate widescreen behavior that must be configured in the game itself.
Use performance and stability presets deliberately
The project README describes a Performance (Gaming Mode) Box64 preset for performance problems and a Stability preset for Unity stability. These are per-game decisions, not proof that one preset is superior overall.

When to try Performance (Gaming Mode)
Use it after confirming the driver, wrapper and resolution are appropriate and the game is still CPU-limited or sluggish. Compare it with the default profile in the same scene. Keep it only if launch behavior, frame pacing and input response improve without introducing crashes or broken behavior.

Choose the Stability preset when a Unity title crashes, freezes, behaves inconsistently or develops faults after a performance change. Stability can be more valuable than a small speed increase because a configuration that cannot complete a session is not useful.
Do not quote a percentage improvement or universal FPS result. The available documentation provides no independently published comparable benchmark, and performance changes with the device, game and environment.
Configure memory conservatively
The older setup article gives 6144 MB as an example for a phone with 6 GB of RAM. That is a dated configuration example, not a safe allocation rule. Android, Winlator itself and the game all need memory; assigning the entire physical total can increase pressure, trigger app termination or leave too little headroom for the operating system.
Use the current build’s documented defaults when available. If you change a memory or video-memory field, increase it cautiously, test the same game scene and watch for Android reclaiming the process. A crash after a memory increase does not prove that the game needs still more memory; it may indicate that the phone no longer has enough free system RAM.

Make a separate profile for every game
Different titles can require different drivers, wrappers and Box64 behavior. The README recommends per-game shortcuts and performance or stability presets. A profile should contain the exact values that were tested for that title, including:
- container and shortcut name;
- driver and driver version, if shown;
- WineD3D, DXVK or VKD3D selection;
- Box64 preset;
- output resolution and scaling;
- in-game quality, shadow and anti-aliasing choices;
- controller mapping, if used; and
- the date and Winlator build used for the test.
This approach prevents a change made for one engine from breaking another and gives you a known-good rollback point after updating Winlator or the game.
How to tune a slow game without guessing
- Confirm the baseline. Reproduce the slowdown in a repeatable scene and make sure the phone is not hot or busy with another task.
- Lower output resolution. Test one step down and record whether frame pacing or responsiveness improves.
- Reduce expensive in-game effects. Shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion and anti-aliasing are sensible next tests.
- Check the API and wrapper. Use DXVK for a supported Direct3D 9–11 title or VKD3D for Direct3D 12 when the current build provides them; use WineD3D as the broad-compatibility fallback.
- Try the performance preset. Keep it only if the target title remains stable.
- Stop when the bottleneck is elsewhere. If lowering resolution changes little, the game may be CPU-limited, translation-limited or constrained by thermals rather than pixels.
Never change the driver, wrapper, resolution and preset simultaneously. You may see a different result, but you will not know which change helped or caused a new fault.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely checks | Recovery step |
|---|---|---|
| Game does not launch | Confirm the Windows executable, container, wrapper and driver. A Direct3D 12 title may not work with a DXVK configuration intended for Direct3D 9–11. | Restore the last working profile and test WineD3D or the wrapper appropriate to the documented API. |
| Black screen or missing textures | Driver and wrapper compatibility are the first suspects. | Change only one of those two variables, relaunch and keep the configuration that renders correctly. |
| Good menu performance but slow gameplay | Menus may not exercise the same shaders, effects or CPU workload as a game scene. | Lower resolution and demanding effects, then retest in the repeatable scene rather than the menu. |
| Crashes after enabling a performance option | The preset or another advanced setting may be incompatible with the engine. | Return to the Stability or previous known-good profile and change one variable at a time. |
| Performance falls during a long session | Thermal state and background processing can change results. | Cool the device, close background apps and repeat the test under the same conditions. |
| Android closes Winlator | Memory pressure may be too high, especially after assigning an aggressive memory value. | Restore conservative memory settings, close other apps and retest before increasing anything. |
What this means for an Exynos Galaxy S24+
An Exynos S24+ is exactly the kind of device for which a generic “best settings” list is unsafe. The project overview notes limitations for Exynos hardware, while the available documentation does not provide a controlled S24+ benchmark or a definitive driver table for every Exynos revision.
Start by identifying the GPU exposed by your exact regional model and by checking which drivers the current Winlator build actually lists. Do not select Turnip simply because it is popular; the project positions Turnip for Snapdragon Adreno GPUs. If your processor is incompatible with Turnip and Vortek is offered, treat Vortek as experimental and test each game for launch, rendering and stability. Use a modest resolution, the wrapper that matches the game’s API, and a per-game profile. Ask for the exact game title before adopting someone else’s settings, because two games can stress entirely different parts of the translation stack.

Controllers and input
A physical controller is optional. Winlator describes gamepad support, and its setup guide mentions Xbox or PS5 controllers connected over USB On-The-Go. Verify that the Android device recognizes the controller, that Winlator maps its buttons correctly and that the Windows game accepts that input mode. A controller that pairs successfully with Android is not automatically guaranteed to work inside every container or title.
A repeatable testing checklist
Use this checklist whenever you compare two configurations:
- Same phone, Android version, Winlator build and game version.
- Same battery or power mode and similar temperature.
- Same container, save file and gameplay scene.
- Only one changed setting.
- At least one launch test and one sustained gameplay test.
- Notes on image quality, frame pacing, input delay, crashes and visual defects.
When an update changes the result, record the new build rather than assuming the old profile remains valid. Drivers, wrappers and menu labels can evolve, and the 2024 setup guide is explicitly older than current builds.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying a preset without matching the device: A setting made for Snapdragon Adreno hardware may not apply to Exynos or MediaTek graphics.
- Treating 960×544 as a universal optimum: It is an example from a 2024 guide, not a measured guarantee.
- Allocating all physical RAM: The 6144 MB example for a 6 GB phone should not be used as a blanket prescription.
- Choosing a wrapper by name alone: DXVK, VKD3D and WineD3D target different compatibility situations.
- Changing several variables at once: This removes the information needed to troubleshoot.
- Promising a frame rate: No universal FPS, percentage gain or device ranking is established by the available evidence.
- Using global settings for every game: Keep profiles separate so a fix for one title does not create a failure in another.
A practical decision order
For most troubleshooting sessions, use this order: identify the GPU; select the compatible driver; identify the game’s Direct3D generation; choose the corresponding wrapper; start at modest resolution and low or medium quality; test in a real gameplay scene; then try the performance preset only if necessary. If a change causes instability, return to the previous profile or Stability preset before experimenting again.
The strongest setting is the one you can reproduce: correct graphics, acceptable responsiveness and a complete session on your specific phone and game. Winlator’s own documentation makes clear that device capability and environmental conditions matter, so exact recommendations require the model, game title and current build rather than a universal Android preset.
