For the original Total War: SHOGUN 2, begin at your display’s native resolution and the highest quality that remains smooth. If battles slow down, reduce settings in Feral Interactive’s order: resolution, vertical synchronisation, particle effects, anti-aliasing and texture filtering, then the remaining lighting, shadow, terrain, vegetation, unit and fleet options. Change one setting at a time because hardware and option combinations affect both performance and availability.
This guide covers the legacy game separately from Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition, which launched for PC on October 13, 2026 with a 64-bit upgrade, updated visuals and 1440p/4K interface scaling. The legacy guidance is based on Feral’s documented option ranking, not modern cross-platform benchmark testing, so it does not promise a particular frame rate.
Use this baseline before changing anything
Start with the game’s native display resolution and the highest visual preset that feels consistently responsive in both campaign views and battles. Feral identifies CPU speed, system memory, graphics hardware and the selected options as the main performance factors. Its published order is a relative guide to which reductions are likely to help most; it is not a measurement of frames per second on a current GPU.
- Open the pre-game launcher’s Options window and choose Display, or launch the game and go to Main Menu → Options → Graphics.
- Record your starting settings before making changes. Some controls can be unavailable because of your hardware or another selected option.
- Change one control, play a representative battle, and keep the change only if the improvement is worth the visual loss. This makes it clear which compromise helped.
The examples in Feral’s ReadMe use legacy resolutions. It ranks 2560×1440 as slower than 1280×1024, which is slower than 1024×768. Those values illustrate the cost of rendering more pixels; they are not a recommendation to run a modern monitor at one of those resolutions. Which graphics settings should you lower first?
Work down this sequence rather than dropping every option to Low. The first controls generally offer the largest performance trade-off according to Feral’s ranking. Once the game feels smooth, stop; there is no benefit in sacrificing image quality that your PC can already sustain.
1. Resolution
Resolution changes the number of pixels the graphics hardware must draw every frame, so it is the first item in Feral’s performance order. Keep the panel’s native resolution when possible, then try a lower in-game resolution if the frame rate remains unsatisfactory. A lower image can look softer or be scaled unevenly, especially on a high-density display, so use the smallest reduction that solves the problem.
Do not interpret Feral’s 2560×1440, 1280×1024 and 1024×768 ordering as modern benchmark data. It demonstrates that the higher-pixel option is heavier, not how many frames a particular processor or GPU will deliver.

Feral lists turning vertical synchronisation off as faster. Disable it when you need another performance gain after testing resolution. If you see visible tearing, turn it back on and recover performance elsewhere; the documented ranking establishes the speed trade-off, while the display-side effect depends on your monitor and timing.
3. Particle effects
Particle effects cover battle visuals such as smoke, fire and other animated effects. Step down from Ultra toward Medium or Low rather than immediately removing every effect. This usually preserves the shapes and colours that help you read a battle while reducing the busiest scenes’ cost.
4. Anti-aliasing
SHOGUN 2 exposes MLAA anti-aliasing. Feral lists disabling MLAA as faster. Turn it off if resolution and particles have not restored smoothness. Edges will look more jagged, particularly on diagonal unit formations and building silhouettes, but the setting is easy to reverse.
5. Texture filtering
Lower anisotropic texture filtering in stages: 16x → 4x → Trilinear. Higher filtering keeps ground textures clearer at oblique viewing angles; lower modes reduce that clarity. Make the smallest step that improves responsiveness instead of jumping straight from 16x to the lowest option.

6. Reduce the remaining visual costs incrementally
After the first five controls, Feral also identifies these options as performance factors:
- Texture quality: reduce it if memory pressure or texture detail is the next limitation.
- Unit size: lower it when large formations make battles heavy, while remembering that smaller on-screen units change battlefield readability and scale.
- Maximum fleet size: reduce it if naval scenes are the problem; this changes how many ships can be represented in a fleet.
- Trees and terrain quality: lower them for scenes dominated by vegetation or detailed ground.
- Distortion/heat haze: reduce this effect if atmospheric distortion is costly or distracting.
- HDR/light bloom: lower or disable the lighting effects if bright scenes remain slow.
- Vignette: reduce it for a lighter post-processing load.
- SSAO/ambient shadow: lower it when contact shadows and scene shading are expensive.
- Optional blood effects: disable them if you do not need the extra detail. Blood effects require the Blood Pack DLC.
These controls can interact. For example, a hardware combination may hide an option, or reducing one setting may make another change unnecessary. Feral’s list supplies relative priorities, not a percentage improvement for any individual switch.
Visual quality versus smoothness: a practical decision table

The table is a tuning order, not a universal preset. A system that is limited by one component may respond more to a later option than to an earlier one, which is why one-at-a-time testing matters.
How to keep battles readable while improving FPS
Performance and command clarity are linked. Lowering every visual option can make formations and terrain harder to interpret even when the frame rate improves. Preserve the settings that help you identify units and movement, then trim decorative effects first.
- Keep the highest practical resolution before reducing unit detail. A clear battlefield can be more useful than extra bloom or heat haze.
- Reduce particles before removing all texture detail if smoke and fire are the main source of slowdowns.
- Use the smallest unit-size reduction that solves the problem. A lower size can make armies easier to render but changes their visual scale.
- For naval engagements, consider maximum fleet size only after the general graphics controls; it changes the scale of fleet representation rather than simply making textures less detailed.
- Leave optional blood effects off if you do not own the required Blood Pack DLC or do not need them. They are not required for core battles.
There is no documented modern setting that guarantees a target such as 60 FPS. Feral’s guidance compares relative cost, and the legacy Steam requirements are not a current recommendation for modern Windows hardware or a GPU benchmark. The SHOGUN 2 Steam listing is useful for the original product information, but its dated requirements should not be read as proof of performance on a current PC.
Where to find the settings
Before launching a campaign
- Open the game’s pre-game Options window.
- Select Display.
- Set resolution, synchronisation, quality and effect controls.
- Apply the changes, launch the game and test a battle before making another adjustment.
From the main menu
- Choose Main Menu → Options → Graphics.
- Adjust the same controls in the in-game graphics panel.
- Apply the change and test it under the type of battle that normally slows down.
Feral notes that available options can vary with hardware and with combinations of settings. If a control is missing, it is not necessarily an installation fault; check the hardware-dependent options and the selected mode first.
Why are SHOGUN 2 battles still lagging after lowering graphics?
If the battle remains slow after the graphics sequence, separate a rendering problem from an interface or platform issue. Lowering more effects may not address a slowdown caused by the number of units, a fleet scene or a platform-specific setting.

Try the floating-flags workaround on Linux
Feral’s Linux FAQ suggests disabling floating flags for both land units and ships after trying lower graphics settings:

- Open Main Menu → Options → Battle Interface.
- Set Floating flags to Never for land units.
- Set Floating flags to Never for ships as well.
- Replay a slow battle and compare responsiveness.
This is a troubleshooting step that may help, not a guaranteed fix. The instruction is documented for Linux; do not present it as a Windows-specific requirement.
Understand the Linux support boundary
Feral says the game was fully tested on Ubuntu 16.04. Other current Linux distributions may run it, but that statement does not make them supported configurations. If you are on another distribution, treat compatibility and performance as uncertain rather than assuming the Ubuntu result applies unchanged. The platform note and workaround are documented in the Feral Linux FAQ.
Check whether the problem is scene-specific
- If campaign maps are smooth but large land battles slow down, test particle effects, unit size, trees, terrain and ambient shadows.
- If naval engagements are the problem, test maximum fleet size along with the general graphics sequence.
- If only scenes with smoke, fire or bright lighting slow down, test particles, distortion/heat haze, HDR/light bloom and SSAO.
- If the slowdown remains identical after each visual reduction, further lowering quality may offer little benefit; the documented material does not provide a modern hardware-to-FPS diagnosis.
Legacy SHOGUN 2 and Complete Edition: do not mix the settings assumptions
SEGA launched Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition for PC on October 13, 2026. It includes edition-level changes that make it a different reference point from the original game, while the available documentation does not provide a complete new-edition graphics manual or comparative performance tests. Use the legacy menu names above for the original game, and verify labels in the Complete Edition rather than assuming every preset is identical.

Because the Complete Edition updates lighting, shadows, textures, controls and the underlying 64-bit build, a setting that is expensive or labelled differently there may not behave exactly like the legacy option. The documented legacy ranking remains useful for the original game, but no source here supports translating it into a guaranteed Complete Edition frame rate.

- Open Options → Display before launch, or Main Menu → Options → Graphics in the original game.
- Set native resolution and the highest quality that is smooth in your usual battles.
- When performance drops, reduce resolution first and test.
- If needed, turn off vertical synchronisation and test again.
- Lower particle effects from Ultra toward Medium or Low.
- Disable MLAA.
- Step anisotropic filtering from 16x to 4x, then Trilinear if necessary.
- Only then lower texture quality, unit size, maximum fleet size, trees, terrain, distortion/heat haze, HDR/light bloom, vignette, SSAO/ambient shadow or optional blood effects.
- On Linux, if battles remain slow, set floating flags to Never for both land units and ships under Battle Interface.
Stop at the first step that produces acceptable responsiveness. The best setting is the highest-quality combination your own hardware can sustain, not a preset copied from a different PC.

Do not change five options at once and then assume the last change made the difference. Return to the same type of battle after each adjustment, especially when comparing a crowded land engagement with a naval scene. A setting that helps one scene may have little effect in another.
Do not treat the old Steam system requirements as a modern buying guide. They describe the legacy product and do not establish compatibility, expected frame rate or ideal settings for a current Windows PC. Likewise, do not assume that a high-end graphics card alone removes every slowdown: Feral lists processor speed, RAM, graphics hardware and the selected options as factors.
Do not lower unit size or maximum fleet size without considering gameplay readability. Those choices alter the apparent scale of formations or fleets, not merely the sharpness of textures. Decorative effects such as bloom, vignette, heat haze and blood are safer first compromises when you want to preserve battlefield information.
Choosing between the legacy game and Complete Edition
If you already own SHOGUN 2 on Steam, you can continue playing it even though standalone sales ended on September 28, 2026. SEGA says the Complete Edition includes the original game on Steam and that existing owners receive missing legacy DLC at no additional cost. The stated 75% loyalty discount was time-limited through November 12, 2026, so eligibility and timing matter.
For a new PC purchase, SEGA lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG for Complete Edition at a US list price of $39.99. Steam purchasers receive the original game and associated DLC except the Blood Pack; purchases through the other listed PC storefronts are described as Complete Edition only. Regional prices and storefront policies can differ.
