The smoothest racing-sandbox setup is not a universal preset. Set a frame-rate target your PC can sustain, use a stable display mode, reduce the options that cause frame-time spikes, and then raise image quality one setting at a time. Separately, confirm that your game recognizes the controller over a supported connection and tune only one input control at a time.
This approach matters because Forza Horizon 5, BeamNG.drive and The Crew Motorfest expose different graphics menus, input systems and hardware requirements. A setting that works on one game, GPU or display can be counterproductive on another.
What “smooth” should mean in a racing sandbox
For driving, smoothness is primarily consistent frame pacing: each frame arrives at a regular interval, steering input is detected predictably, and camera motion does not judder when the scene becomes busy. A high peak frame rate with frequent dips usually feels worse than a lower rate that your hardware can hold.

Choose a target from the refresh rates your display can actually use. If your system fluctuates between 55 and 90 frames per second, a capped target that it can maintain in the busiest race, city or weather scene will normally feel steadier than an uncapped counter that swings constantly. Use the in-game frame-rate display, a driver overlay or your monitor’s refresh indicator to observe behavior; do not judge a preset only from an empty road.

- Prioritize frame pacing: remove stutter and severe dips before increasing texture, shadow or reflection quality.
- Keep input latency in mind: a setting that adds visual quality but causes long frame times can make steering feel less precise.
- Change one variable at a time: this makes it possible to identify which option caused a change.
There is no evidence for one cross-game “best” collection of values. Forza’s official PC documentation says the game has “a vast array of graphics settings to tweak and adjust the experience as you see fit,” and lists adjustable frame rate, resolution, HDR and field of view rather than prescribing one preset for every computer. See the official Forza Horizon 5 PC specifications and settings guide for the options available on that game.
A repeatable graphics-tuning process
1. Confirm the display and operating mode
Use the display’s native resolution when the GPU can sustain your target. If it cannot, use the game’s resolution scale or an upscaler before dropping all visual settings indiscriminately. Set the correct refresh rate in the operating system and game, and choose exclusive full-screen or borderless mode according to which one behaves reliably on your system. Some systems handle alt-tab and overlays better in borderless mode; others show more consistent latency in exclusive full-screen.
2. Establish a baseline
- Restart the game after changing API, driver or display settings.
- Load a repeatable demanding scene: a busy festival area, a race start with many cars, a storm, or a dense BeamNG.drive vehicle-and-object scenario.
- Record average frame rate and, more importantly, visible stutter or severe drops.
- Note GPU utilization, CPU utilization and VRAM use if your overlay provides them.
Run the same route after each change. A single short benchmark or an empty test road can hide the spikes that matter while driving.
3. Reduce the options that cause frame-time spikes
When performance is unstable, lower demanding effects before reducing every option equally. Shadows, reflections, ambient-occlusion effects, volumetric fog, dense vegetation and vehicle or world detail can be expensive in open environments. Reduce one category, repeat the same test and keep the change only if frame pacing improves. Texture quality is often limited by VRAM capacity rather than raw shader speed, so lowering textures may help a memory-bound system while doing little for a GPU that is compute-bound.
4. Add image quality incrementally
Once the target is stable, raise texture quality first if VRAM headroom is available, then test reflections, shadows and post-processing separately. Stop when the busiest scene begins to miss the target. A stable medium or high setting is preferable to an “ultra” preset that produces hitching every time new scenery streams in.

5. Recheck after updates
Game patches, graphics drivers and operating-system updates can change performance and compatibility. Keep a note of the settings that worked so you can restore them, but retest after a major update rather than assuming the old result still applies.
Game-specific graphics considerations
Forza Horizon 5 on PC
Forza Horizon 5 PC supports an unlocked frame rate, 4K output, HDR and field-of-view adjustment, with requirements organized around different gameplay scenarios. These capabilities do not mean that every PC should enable them simultaneously. Select your resolution and HDR mode based on the monitor or television, then choose a frame-rate target your hardware can hold in the busiest parts of the map.

Treat the result as a performance tool, not a guarantee: the benefit depends on the selected GPU, resolution and quality mode. Verify that text, distant road markings and thin vegetation remain clear at speed.
DLSS 3 and Reflex in Forza Horizon 5
Forza’s update documentation states that DLSS 3 is available for GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, while Reflex is available on GeForce GTX 900 series and newer GPUs. The same article reports performance figures for specific hardware and resolutions; those figures are not universal benchmarks and should not be applied to other GPUs or games. If your hardware meets the stated generation requirement, enable the feature, repeat your demanding-scene test and keep it only if frame pacing and image quality remain acceptable. Read the Forza update article covering DLSS and Reflex for the compatibility context.
BeamNG.drive: treat VRAM as a first diagnostic
BeamNG’s support portal warns that performance can decrease severely when the game exceeds available GPU VRAM. Monitor VRAM while reproducing the stutter, close unnecessary background programs and reduce settings that increase memory use. Texture resolution, high-resolution mirrors, vehicle count and large or heavily populated scenes can all increase the memory requirement, but the exact threshold depends on your graphics card and scenario.

The portal also documents an issue in which some Intel D3D12 drivers use excessive VRAM. Its temporary workarounds are switching to Vulkan or D3D11. Those are BeamNG- and configuration-specific troubleshooting steps, not a universal recommendation for every game. Check the current BeamNG support portal entry before changing APIs, because driver and game versions can alter the advice.
The Crew Motorfest
The available Ubisoft page is a PC-support listing rather than a readable, detailed settings article. Use its current platform-specific instructions for Motorfest, then apply the same process: establish a repeatable demanding scene, set a sustainable frame-rate target, lower the options responsible for spikes and raise quality gradually. Do not copy Forza or BeamNG values into Motorfest without testing them. The support listing is at The Crew Motorfest PC support page.
Controller setup: compatibility before sensitivity
A controller cannot improve frame rate. It can, however, make a smooth game feel inconsistent if the device is not detected correctly, is connected through an unsupported mode or has an incorrect layout. Start with the game’s input menu and verify that button presses, triggers and both sticks register before changing dead zones or sensitivity.
Use a supported connection
- Connect the controller by the method documented for your game: USB, native wireless or the platform’s input layer.
- Close duplicate remapping tools temporarily so that only one program is translating the device.
- Launch the game after the controller is connected, then open its controller or input settings.
- Test every face button, shoulder button, trigger, stick axis and vibration function.
- Save a custom profile only after the default layout is confirmed.
BeamNG’s hardware documentation lists PC-compatible gamepads but notes that some console-only controllers may need an external adapter or software. Compatibility is therefore a property of the game, connection mode and operating system together, not merely the controller’s brand or shape. See the BeamNG controller compatibility documentation when a device is not detected.
BeamNG and DualShock 4 Bluetooth detection
BeamNG’s support information reports that a PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 may fail to appear when connected over Bluetooth. Its stated workarounds are connecting the controller by USB or enabling Steam Input in the game’s Steam controller properties. The same documentation says that the Share, PlayStation and Mute buttons on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 controllers are not detected by the current input system. Plan your bindings around the buttons that the game can actually see rather than treating this as a graphics problem.

Forza Horizon 5 and Xbox Wireless Controller haptics
Forza Horizon 5 supports haptic feedback on Xbox Wireless Controller, including the Steam version. This confirms support and vibration behavior; it does not show that buying a new controller increases frame rate or is required for smooth play. If you already own a compatible pad, use it, confirm that haptics are enabled in the game and adjust vibration strength to a level that does not obscure tire or surface feedback. The compatibility information is in Forza’s PC guide.
How to tune dead zones, steering and vibration
No reliable, game-independent values for stick dead zone, steering sensitivity, vibration or trigger response were established for these games. Controller layouts, steering models and firmware differ, so copy-pasting numerical presets can create sluggishness or twitchiness.
Find a useful stick dead zone
- Begin with the game’s default dead zone.
- With the vehicle stationary, observe whether the steering input moves without touching the stick. If it does, increase the inner dead zone in small steps until the input rests still.
- Drive slowly and make small corrections. If the first movement feels delayed, reduce the dead zone one step.
- Test again at speed; a setting that feels fine in a menu can feel too abrupt during a high-speed corner.
The goal is the smallest dead zone that eliminates unwanted movement, not a particular percentage.
Adjust steering sensitivity and linearity
Use a neutral sensitivity or linearity setting first. If small stick movements produce too much steering, reduce sensitivity or add a gentler response curve. If the vehicle barely reacts until the stick is near its edge, reverse that adjustment. Change one control setting per test and drive the same corner repeatedly so you can separate steering changes from vehicle setup or frame-time problems.

Set vibration and trigger effects for information
Vibration should communicate wheel slip, impacts and surface changes without masking those cues. Lower its strength if the motor feels distracting or causes hand fatigue. Trigger effects can be useful for braking and throttle feedback when the game supports them; disable or reduce them if they make fine modulation harder. These are practical tuning principles, not official cross-game presets.

Gamepad versus racing wheel
A gamepad is the lower-effort choice for a controller-focused setup: it is compact, quick to connect and supported by the documented gamepad paths above. A wheel can provide a larger steering range and force feedback, but it requires more desk space, calibration and game-specific configuration. Neither input device is a graphics upgrade, and the sources do not establish a universal quality ranking.
| Factor | Gamepad | Racing wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | Usually connect, select the device and bind controls. | Requires mounting, driver installation, rotation calibration and force-feedback tuning. |
| Compatibility | BeamNG documents PC-compatible gamepads; some console-only pads may need adapters or software. | Forza publishes supported wheel models; BeamNG provides a separate wheel setup guide. |
| Responsiveness | Depends on dead zone, sensitivity, frame pacing and connection mode. | Depends on driver, wheel settings, force-feedback strength and game frame rate. |
| Space and cost | Lower space requirement; purchase cost varies by model. | Needs a wheel, pedals and a secure mounting position; total cost and space requirement are higher. |
| Best fit | Quick sessions, mixed arcade/simulation driving and limited desk space. | Players who want a physical steering range and are willing to calibrate. |
Wheel-specific BeamNG guidance
BeamNG’s steering-wheel setup documentation recommends at least 60 frames per second for more responsive force feedback. It also recommends adjusting force-feedback strength and smoothing gradually to match driving style and comfort. If the wheel feels delayed or oscillates, first verify stable frame pacing, then reduce strength or increase smoothing in small increments rather than applying an extreme value. Follow the BeamNG steering-wheel setup guide for device-specific controls.
Troubleshooting by symptom
High frame rate but visible stutter
- Watch frame-time consistency, not only the average FPS counter.
- Cap the frame rate below the level your system repeatedly misses.
- Close background capture, browser and overlay processes.
- Check VRAM use, especially in BeamNG, and lower memory-heavy options if it is full.
- Retest after changing one setting or graphics API.
Performance collapses in busy scenes
- Lower shadows, reflections, volumetrics, vegetation or world detail first.
- Reduce vehicle or object counts in the scenario if the game exposes those controls.
- Check whether the CPU, rather than GPU, is saturated; lowering resolution will not fix a CPU-bound scene.
- In BeamNG, follow the support portal’s VRAM guidance and test Vulkan or D3D11 if the documented Intel D3D12 issue matches your configuration.
The controller works in the operating system but not in the game
- Reconnect it before launching the game.
- Disable competing remappers and test the platform input layer.
- Try USB when Bluetooth detection is unreliable; BeamNG specifically documents this workaround for DualShock 4.
- Check whether the game supports that controller type directly or requires an adapter or software.
- Rebind only after the device appears in the game’s input menu.
Steering feels delayed or twitchy
- Confirm that the game is not suffering frame-time spikes.
- Return dead zone, sensitivity and steering curves to default.
- Change one value in a small increment and repeat the same test corner.
- Check for wireless interference or a low controller battery if input drops out intermittently.
A practical starting checklist
- Set the display to its intended refresh rate and choose a realistic frame-rate target.
- Use native resolution or a quality upscaler that preserves readable road detail.
- Run a demanding, repeatable scene and note frame pacing, GPU load and VRAM use.
- Lower reflections, shadows, volumetrics, vegetation or object density when dips occur.
- In BeamNG, investigate VRAM exhaustion and the documented Intel D3D12 issue before blaming the preset.
- Connect the controller by USB, native wireless or the game’s documented input path.
- Verify every axis and button before adjusting controls.
- Set the smallest stick dead zone that stops drift, then tune sensitivity and vibration one setting at a time.
- If using a wheel, secure it, calibrate it and maintain at least 60 FPS in BeamNG for more responsive force feedback.
- Retest after a game, driver or operating-system update.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use an uncapped frame rate for racing games?
Only if your system can sustain it without repeated frame-time spikes. Otherwise, a cap at a stable target generally produces more consistent steering and camera motion.
Will buying a new controller make the game run faster?
No. A controller affects input and vibration features, not rendering performance. Frame rate depends on the game, hardware and graphics settings.
Why does BeamNG suddenly become extremely slow?
BeamNG’s support portal identifies running out of GPU VRAM as a cause of severe performance loss. Monitor VRAM, close background programs and reduce memory-heavy settings; some Intel D3D12 driver configurations may require Vulkan or D3D11 as a temporary workaround.
Why is my DualShock 4 missing from BeamNG over Bluetooth?
BeamNG documents a Bluetooth detection issue. Connect the controller by USB or enable Steam Input in the game’s Steam controller properties. The current input system also does not detect Share, PlayStation or Mute buttons on PS4 or PS5 controllers.
What is the best dead-zone percentage?
There is no dependable value that applies to every controller or game. Start at default, increase the inner dead zone only until drift stops, then reduce it if steering feels delayed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
