For most players, the best setup is a stable frame-rate target at your display’s native resolution, modern controls, and only then higher visual effects. On PC, enable NVIDIA DLSS when supported and keep textures high if your video memory allows. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, choose the performance-oriented mode for driving and aiming responsiveness or the fidelity-oriented mode for image detail. Older consoles should prioritize consistency over effects, while Switch players can add gyro aiming and touch-screen shortcuts.
Rockstar’s Definitive Edition adds higher-resolution textures, updated lighting and weather, longer draw distances, and GTA V-style controls and targeting. The exact menu labels and behavior can change with title updates, so use the names shown by your current build rather than relying on a universal preset.
Quick recommendations by platform
| Platform | Starting point | Best for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC | Native display resolution, a frame-rate cap your system can hold, DLSS enabled when an NVIDIA GPU supports it, high textures if VRAM permits | Adjustable image quality, mouse and keyboard, and the widest troubleshooting options | Rockstar’s published PC requirements should be met before advanced tuning; practical settings advice is not a benchmark result |
| PlayStation 5 | Performance-oriented mode for responsive play; fidelity-oriented mode for maximum detail | Responsive controller play or higher-detail presentation | Rockstar documents up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS capability; mode names and behavior can vary by build |
| Xbox Series X | Use the same performance-versus-fidelity choice according to your priority | High-end console play on a 4K display | The documented ceiling is up to 4K/60, not a promise that every scene holds that result |
| PlayStation 4 and Xbox One | Favor a stable presentation and readable image; reduce costly options exposed by the menu | Existing last-generation hardware | Available graphics controls and results depend on the console and current update |
| Nintendo Switch | Moderate camera and aim sensitivity, stable presentation, gyro aiming if comfortable | Portable play and motion-assisted aiming | Rockstar specifically documents gyro aiming and touch-screen camera/menu interactions |
No single platform is universally best. The right choice depends on whether you value portability, input flexibility, visual detail, or the simplest stable experience.

The remaster is not only a resolution bump. Rockstar describes the trilogy as having high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and environmental effects, improved weather presentation, increased draw distances, and Grand Theft Auto V-style controls and targeting. Those changes affect both how Vice City looks and how it feels to drive, aim and move through it.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
“Play the genre-defining classics of the original Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas updated for a new generation, now with across-the-board enhancements including brilliant new lighting and environmental upgrades, with high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, Grand Theft Auto V-style controls and targeting, and much more, bringing these beloved worlds to life with all new levels of detail.”
The phrase “up to” matters. A feature ceiling describes what the hardware and software can support, not a guarantee that every mission, weather state or camera angle will maintain the maximum result. Treat the documented specifications as an upper bound and tune for consistency in your own setup.
Build a good PC baseline before changing individual options
PC has the most controls, but it is also the platform where an unstable configuration can create stutter that looks like a graphics-quality problem. Start with a known baseline instead of changing several settings at once.

1. Update the game and verify the requirements
- Install the latest available game update through your PC launcher.
- Check Rockstar’s published PC requirements for the operating system, processor, memory, graphics card and storage expectations.
- Close overlays and background applications temporarily while you establish a baseline. Re-enable them one at a time if they are needed.
- Restart the game after changing a graphics option that requests a restart; otherwise the old setting may remain active.
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.04 notes, published in 2021, list performance improvements across platforms and graphics modes. The support hub also records a later 1.112 stability update. Updating is therefore a first-line fix, not an optional final step.
2. Set resolution and a realistic frame-rate target
Begin at your monitor’s native resolution. Select a frame-rate target that the system can hold during driving, combat and weather changes, rather than choosing a high number that regularly collapses. A steady target generally feels better than a fluctuating one because camera movement and aiming remain predictable.
If your display supports variable refresh, enable it in the display and driver settings, then use a cap that stays within the display’s reliable range. If it does not, an in-game or driver-level cap can reduce unnecessary swings. The correct number depends on your monitor and hardware; Rockstar does not publish a universal PC frame-rate target for every configuration.

3. Use DLSS when the GPU supports it
Rockstar lists NVIDIA DLSS as a PC feature. When a compatible NVIDIA graphics card is installed, enable DLSS and choose the clearest quality option that still meets your frame-rate target. If the image appears soft, move toward a higher-quality DLSS mode before lowering texture quality. If your GPU does not support DLSS, leave it unavailable rather than treating another upscaler as an equivalent feature.

Texture quality usually changes surface detail more than it changes the basic geometry of the world. Keep it high when the video-memory meter remains within a safe range. If the meter is exceeded, lower textures before chasing small gains elsewhere; texture-memory pressure can cause loading hitches and sudden detail changes.
Do not confuse texture quality with resolution. A high texture setting at a lower output resolution can still look detailed, while a high output resolution cannot prevent blurry surfaces when textures are set too low.
5. Lower expensive effects before sacrificing every visual setting
When the frame rate is unstable, reduce the options that add substantial lighting, shadow, reflection, volumetric or post-processing work, if those controls are exposed by your build. Change one category at a time and repeat the same demanding activity, such as a fast drive through a busy area, so you can identify which adjustment helped.
Keep the settings that preserve readability. Excessive reductions to lighting or effects can make night scenes, wet roads and targets harder to read even when the frame counter improves.

6. Reduce draw distance only after checking the main bottleneck
Draw distance controls how far objects and details are presented. It can affect both GPU workload and the amount of world data the system must process. Lower it after testing resolution, upscaling and expensive effects, not as the first reaction to every hitch. A moderate reduction is preferable to the lowest value if distant geometry suddenly appears or disappears during driving.

7. Check frame pacing, not only average FPS
A high average can still feel jerky when individual frames arrive unevenly. To diagnose this, watch for a repeating hitch during camera pans or driving and compare the behavior after each single change. If lowering resolution does little, the limitation may be CPU work, asset streaming or frame pacing rather than raw GPU load. In that case, a sensible cap and fewer background processes may help more than another image-quality reduction.
Choosing performance or fidelity on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
On these consoles, the practical decision is whether responsiveness or maximum detail matters more for your play style. Rockstar’s product materials document support for up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Choose the performance-oriented mode when input feel comes first
- Driving through traffic is your main concern.
- You notice camera judder or aim delay more than small changes in distant detail.
- You play on a display where motion clarity is more important than peak resolution.
- You want the most responsive feel available in the current build.
Performance mode is the sensible default for action-heavy sessions. It does not mean the game becomes visually simple; it means the mode gives more of its available budget to responsiveness.
Choose the fidelity-oriented mode when detail comes first
- You sit close to a large 4K display.
- You spend time looking at lighting, weather, reflections and distant scenery.
- You prefer a more detailed image and can accept a less aggressive frame-rate target.
Use the exact labels shown in your console’s current graphics menu. Rockstar’s documentation establishes the hardware capability, but title updates and platform interfaces can change how modes are named or presented.
Settings for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and other lower-powered hardware
Last-generation consoles do not offer the same headroom as the current high-end systems. Start by installing updates, then prioritize a consistent presentation over maximum effects.
- Open the game’s display or graphics options and note which controls are actually available on your console.
- Choose the most stable frame-rate-oriented option if the menu provides one.
- Reduce expensive visual effects before lowering every other setting.
- Keep the image readable: avoid a combination that makes signs, targets or road edges indistinct.
- Test a busy driving route and a combat encounter before deciding the configuration is stable.
Rockstar’s update notes document performance and graphics-mode fixes across platforms, so an old installation can behave differently from a current one. If a problem began after changing settings, restore the previous profile and retest before making more changes.

Nintendo Switch: use the platform’s input advantages
The Switch version adds gyro aiming and touch-screen interactions for the camera and menus. Gyro is optional, so it should be treated as an input preference rather than a requirement.
Gyro aiming
Enable gyro if small wrist movements feel more precise than a thumb stick. Begin with moderate sensitivity and increase it gradually. Very high sensitivity can make target tracking inconsistent, especially when the camera stick and motion input are used together.
Touch-screen camera and menu actions
Touch interaction is useful for quick menu navigation and camera adjustments when the console is in handheld mode. Keep the camera sensitivity moderate until you know how much of the work is being done by touch and how much by the stick. The goal is predictable movement, not maximum sensitivity.
Portable presentation
Favor a stable, comfortable image over aggressive visual settings. Portable viewing distance, battery conditions and handheld ergonomics can matter more than a small increase in effects. If the image feels busy, adjust camera sensitivity and display options before assuming the hardware is failing.
Modern or classic controls?
Modern controls are the best starting point for most players. They follow the GTA V-style control and targeting redesign Rockstar markets for the Definitive Edition, so driving, aiming and camera behavior are closer to contemporary entries in the series.
Use modern controls when
- You are new to Vice City or returning after years away.
- You want familiar contemporary aiming and targeting behavior.
- You play with a controller and value easier camera management during driving.
- You are switching between platforms and want a consistent control philosophy.
Use classic controls when
- You specifically want the original game’s input feel.
- The modern camera or targeting behavior feels less natural to you.
- You have muscle memory from the original release and do not want to relearn it.
Try one complete mission and a short free-roam drive before deciding. Changing between schemes repeatedly can make either one feel unfamiliar. On PC, use the input method that gives you the most reliable camera control; remap only the actions that conflict with your hand position or hardware.

Fine-tune sensitivity in small steps
- Set look and aim sensitivity near the middle of the available range.
- Test a slow camera pan, a moving target and a vehicle turn.
- Change one slider by a small increment.
- Repeat the same tests before changing another slider.
Graphics stutter can make aiming feel slower or less precise even when the control settings are unchanged. Establish frame pacing first, then judge sensitivity.

How to stop stutter on PC
Use this order so you do not mask the original cause with unnecessary quality loss.
- Confirm the update. Check that the game is fully patched. Title Update 1.04 documented cross-platform performance improvements, and Rockstar’s support hub lists later stability work identified as version 1.112.
- Confirm hardware eligibility. Compare your system with Rockstar’s official PC requirements. If the processor, memory or graphics card is below the stated requirement, lowering settings may not remove every hitch.
- Choose a stable cap. Select a target your system can maintain during driving, combat and weather transitions. Do not optimize for a menu or an empty street.
- Test resolution scaling or DLSS. On compatible NVIDIA hardware, enable DLSS. Otherwise test a modest resolution or scaling reduction and observe whether GPU load changes.
- Lower expensive effects. Reduce lighting, shadows, reflections or other costly options exposed by the menu. Change one category per test.
- Then reduce draw distance. If the hitch appears while rapidly moving through the city, a moderate draw-distance reduction may help. Avoid the lowest setting unless it is the only stable option.
- Check for CPU or streaming limits. If resolution changes barely affect the hitch, the problem may be CPU load, asset streaming or uneven frame delivery. Close background tasks and use a sensible cap.
- Recheck controls. Once pacing is stable, revisit look and aim sensitivity. Uneven frame delivery can make an otherwise comfortable setting feel sluggish.
Symptoms and likely direction
| Symptom | First test | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Large drops when effects become intense | Lower lighting, shadows, reflections or post-processing | That texture quality is the only cause |
| Hitches during fast travel through the city | Test draw distance and background CPU load | That a higher average FPS will fix frame pacing |
| Blurry surfaces after tuning | Restore texture quality if VRAM allows; choose a clearer DLSS mode | That higher output resolution automatically restores texture detail |
| Aiming feels inconsistent after a graphics change | Verify frame pacing, then retune sensitivity | That the controller itself has changed |
Updates, availability and what the specifications do not prove
The trilogy officially launched on November 11, 2021. Rockstar’s 2021 materials document the current-generation capability and the feature set, while the 1.04 notes show that performance work continued after launch. A later 1.112 stability update is listed in Rockstar’s support materials.

A practical decision guide
If you play mainly with a controller
Start with modern controls, moderate sensitivity and the performance-oriented mode on current-generation consoles. Move to fidelity only if you consistently prefer extra detail over responsiveness.
If you play mainly with mouse and keyboard
Use PC if your system meets the published requirements. Begin at native resolution, enable DLSS on compatible NVIDIA hardware, and establish a stable cap before raising effects.
If you want the original feel
Select classic controls and avoid changing multiple sensitivity options at once. Keep a modern-controls profile available if you later switch platforms or discover that a mission is easier with contemporary targeting.
