For the best balance, begin with the highest visual preset or frame-rate target your iPhone or iPad can hold steadily, then lower frame rate or resolution if the device gets hot, stutters, or drains quickly. Keep the display refresh rate at or below the game’s target, reduce brightness, close or restrict power-hungry background apps, and use Battery Saver only when endurance matters more than responsiveness. No Man’s Sky’s iOS release supports iPhone 11 and third-generation iPad Air or newer; Planetary Settlements require iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
What settings should you use first?
No Man’s Sky is a demanding, graphics-heavy game. The right setting is not necessarily the highest number available in a menu; it is the highest option that remains stable during exploration, flight, terrain loading, and busy scenes without persistent heat or aggressive battery drain.
Hello Games says it has invested heavily in battery life and thermodynamics, describing the game as suitable for “really long comfortable play sessions.” However, it has not published a device-by-device frame-rate table, measured hours of battery life, wattage figures, temperature limits, or a complete list of launch graphics sliders. Treat the following as a practical tuning method rather than an official performance chart.

- Install the current iOS version from the live App Store listing and restart the device before your first long session.
- Choose the highest available visual preset or frame-rate option.
- Play for at least 10 to 15 minutes in a demanding situation, such as flying close to a planet surface, entering a settlement, or loading a new area.
- If frame pacing remains smooth and the device is only mildly warm, keep that setting.
- If you see repeated stutter, severe heat, dimming, rapid battery loss, or a performance drop after several minutes, lower the frame-rate target or resolution one step before reducing every visual effect.
The test period matters because a phone can look fast during the opening minutes and then throttle once heat builds. Sustained stability is more important than a short burst of high frame rate.

30 fps or 60 fps: which target is better?
A 60 fps target can make camera movement, flight, and aiming feel smoother, but it usually increases rendering work and power use. A stable 30 fps target is often the better choice for long sessions, smaller devices, or a battery that is already low. The correct choice depends on whether your device can sustain the target rather than merely reach it.
Choose 60 fps when
- Your iPhone or iPad holds the target without recurring stutter or a noticeable performance collapse after warming up.
- You value smoother camera motion and controls more than maximum session length.
- The device remains comfortable to hold and the battery drain is acceptable for the session.
Choose 30 fps when
- 60 fps causes heat, fluctuating frame pacing, or rapid battery loss.
- You are playing on an older supported device, including an iPhone 11 or a third-generation iPad Air, and stability is more important than animation smoothness.
- You are travelling, away from a charger, or trying to extend a long expedition.
Do not assume that an unstable 60 fps experience is superior to a locked, consistent 30 fps experience. Uneven frame delivery is visible as judder and can make controls feel worse than a lower but steady target.
Match the display refresh rate to the game
If your iPhone or iPad offers a display refresh-rate setting, avoid running the screen substantially faster than the game’s frame-rate target. Android Developers states: “If the display refresh rate is higher than the target frame rate of the game, there is no benefit from the higher refresh rate, only increased power consumption.” The same power principle is useful when deciding how to configure a high-refresh mobile display for any demanding game, even though the quoted guidance is Android-specific.

| Game target | Display approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | Use the device’s standard or adaptive mode rather than forcing a high refresh rate. | A higher refresh does not make a 30 fps game render more frames and can consume more power. |
| 60 fps | Use a 60 Hz or adaptive mode that does not hold the panel at a substantially higher rate. | The display can present the target without paying for unused refresh cycles. |
| Unstable target | Lower the game target first, then choose a display mode that matches the new target where the operating system allows it. | Reducing workload is more effective than asking the screen to refresh faster than the game can supply. |
Exact refresh-rate controls vary by iPhone and iPad model and by the current iOS release. If your device does not expose a manual setting, leave the system on its normal adaptive behavior and concentrate on the in-game target, brightness, and temperature.
How to reduce battery drain without making the game look poor
Lowering every visual option to its minimum is rarely the best first move. A lower, stable frame-rate or resolution target generally preserves more of the game’s visual character than disabling every effect while still allowing the device to render an inconsistent target.

1. Lower frame rate before removing all effects
When endurance is the priority, move from 60 fps to 30 fps if that option is available. This reduces the number of frames the CPU and GPU must prepare and can also reduce heat-related throttling. Keep texture and lighting quality at a moderate level if those controls are available and the device remains stable.
2. Lower resolution when the device is still overloaded
If a lower frame-rate target does not stop stutter or heat, reduce resolution or rendering scale one step. Resolution has a direct effect on the number of pixels the graphics processor must process. Make one change at a time so you can identify which setting solved the problem.

Effects such as shadows, reflections, volumetric lighting, and post-processing can have different costs on different devices. Because Hello Games has not published a complete launch slider list or a per-model cost table, there is no evidence-based universal order for disabling them. Use the game’s own preset options, change one setting, and test in the same demanding location.
4. Reduce brightness
The display can be a major part of a phone or tablet’s power use. Lower brightness to the minimum that remains comfortable, especially indoors or at night. Google’s Android guidance also recommends reducing brightness as a battery-saving measure; the principle applies to iOS display use as well.
5. Limit competing background work
Before a long session, pause large downloads, cloud-photo synchronization, video uploads, and navigation or streaming apps that you do not need. Background work can add CPU, network, and radio activity while the game is already using the graphics processor.

6. Use the operating system’s battery controls carefully
Google recommends Adaptive Battery, Battery Saver, lower brightness, a shorter screen timeout, and restricting apps with high background use. Battery Saver can also limit background activity and cause delays in some visual effects, features, network connections, and apps. On an iPhone or iPad, use the equivalent low-power controls when endurance is more important than background responsiveness, but check what your current iOS version changes before relying on them during a session.

How to keep an iPhone or iPad cool
Heat is both a comfort problem and a performance problem. High CPU and GPU utilization generates heat. When the device reaches its thermal limits, it can downclock, reducing performance and sometimes increasing the time required to complete the same work.
Before playing
- Start with the device out of direct sunlight and away from a hot car, radiator, or other heat source.
- Do not begin a demanding session while the device is already hot from charging, video recording, navigation, or another game.
- Remove a heat-trapping case if doing so is safe and practical for your device.
- Keep vents and exposed surfaces unobstructed; do not place the device on soft bedding that traps heat.
During playing
- Take breaks when the device becomes uncomfortably hot rather than waiting for a severe slowdown.
- Lower the frame-rate target as soon as you notice sustained stutter after the device warms up.
- Avoid direct sun and hot outdoor environments.
- Do not use unsafe cooling methods such as placing a warm device in a freezer or exposing it to condensation.
These are general thermal practices, not measured No Man’s Sky results. Hello Games’ statement about thermodynamic work does not establish a specific safe temperature or guaranteed runtime for any model.
Which iPhones and iPads can run No Man’s Sky?
Hello Games’ official iOS announcement sets the documented support floor at iPhone 11 and third-generation iPad Air. Newer models are included, but a newer device is not automatically entitled to every feature at the same performance level.
| Device or feature | Documented status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 11 and newer | Supported iPhone floor | The game is intended to run on iPhone 11 and later models, subject to the final software release and compatibility requirements. |
| Third-generation iPad Air and newer | Supported iPad Air floor | Third-generation iPad Air is the stated minimum for that iPad line; later supported iPads may differ in sustained performance. |
| Planetary Settlements | Requires iPhone 15 Pro or newer | Devices below this requirement should not be expected to provide that feature. |
| Multiplayer on iOS | Not supported | The iOS version is a solo experience under Hello Games’ announcement; do not buy an accessory or plan a session expecting iOS multiplayer. |
The announcement does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every iPad family, storage configuration, or regional variant. Check the live App Store listing for your exact model and iOS version before installing.

Release date, download size, and purchase details
Hello Games’ announcement is dated October 12, 2026, and says the release is October 28, 2026. The US App Store listing identifies an expected date of October 29, 2026. Those dates conflict, and storefront dates can change; check the live listing in your region for the final availability date.
Hello Games says the download is under 4 GB. The iOS listing describes a free trial and a one-time purchase to unlock the full game. The final download size, required free storage for installation and updates, and any regional purchase terms should be verified on the storefront at the time you install.
Controller, touch, mouse, and keyboard support
Controllers are supported on iOS, making one the clearest accessory choice for long sessions or players who find touch controls tiring. Use an MFi or Bluetooth-compatible controller that your exact iPhone or iPad recognizes. Pair it in the operating system before launching the game, then check the game’s control settings for button mapping and vibration options.
iPad also supports mouse and keyboard input according to Hello Games. This can suit desk play, but it does not change the game’s graphics workload or battery use. A controller may be more comfortable for couch or travel play, while a keyboard and mouse can be preferable for precise menu navigation and movement at a desk.

Touch-control battery considerations
Touch input does not provide a documented battery advantage over a controller. Choose the input method for comfort and control consistency rather than assuming one has a guaranteed runtime benefit. If hand fatigue causes you to increase brightness, hold the device awkwardly, or play in a hotter environment, a controller can still improve the overall session experience.

A repeatable tuning procedure for any supported device
- Confirm support. Verify that the device is at least an iPhone 11 or third-generation iPad Air, and check whether you need Planetary Settlements, which requires iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
- Update first. Install the current iOS and game build shown by the live App Store listing. Leave enough free storage for the under-4-GB download plus installation and updates.
- Start high. Select the highest available visual preset or frame-rate target.
- Choose a repeatable test. Use the same planet, flight route, settlement, or loading sequence each time. A repeatable scene makes changes easier to judge.
- Watch sustained behavior. Test for at least 10 to 15 minutes, not just the first minute after launch. Note stutter, touch latency, brightness changes, heat, and battery percentage.
- Reduce one major cost. Move from 60 to 30 fps, or lower resolution one step. Do not change every option simultaneously.
- Re-test. Repeat the same scene and compare smoothness, temperature, and drain.
- Adjust the display. Avoid a refresh rate higher than the game target, and reduce brightness to a comfortable minimum.
- Control the environment. Remove a heat-trapping case if safe, avoid direct sun, and pause charging or other heavy tasks that make the device hotter.
- Save the profile. Keep the setting that remains smooth and comfortable for your typical session, not the one that produces the highest short-term frame rate.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game starts smoothly, then stutters
Heat-related throttling is the most likely pattern when performance degrades after several minutes. Lower the frame-rate target or resolution, move to a cooler environment, remove a heat-trapping case if safe, and take a break. If the issue persists while the device is cool, restart the game and verify that iOS and the game are current.
The battery drops quickly even at a low frame rate
Lower brightness, stop background downloads and synchronization, restrict high-use background apps, and check whether the display is held at a refresh rate above the game target. Battery Saver or a low-power mode can extend endurance, but it may delay background activity or reduce responsiveness in other apps.
The device becomes uncomfortable to hold
Stop and let it cool. Do not continue a long session solely because the game remains playable. Heat can lead to throttling, and an uncomfortable device is a practical sign that the current workload or environment is unsuitable.
A feature is missing
Check device eligibility. Planetary Settlements are documented for iPhone 15 Pro and newer, and multiplayer is not supported in the iOS version. A missing feature may therefore be an intentional platform limitation rather than a graphics-setting problem.
The App Store date or listing differs from an announcement
Use the live storefront for your region. Hello Games’ announcement gives October 28, 2026, while the US App Store listing shows an expected October 29, 2026 date. Availability and dates can change before launch.
What is not yet documented
Do not rely on online claims that assign exact frame rates, battery hours, watts, temperatures, or model-by-model rankings unless they identify a reproducible test. Hello Games has not published those figures in the cited announcement. There is also no official Android listing or Android-specific No Man’s Sky graphics-settings documentation identified here, so general Android battery guidance must not be treated as proof that the game is available on Android.
Until official figures or reproducible testing exists, compare devices using sustained frame-rate stability, image sharpness and effects, surface temperature, thermal throttling, battery drain per session, display refresh rate, and feature availability—especially Planetary Settlements—not unsupported numerical scores.
