There is no single “best” GPU fan curve. The right setting depends on your exact graphics card, cooler, firmware, temperature sensors, game load and room temperature. Start with the card’s automatic profile, make one small change at a time, then test in the games you actually play. Keep the curve only if it lowers temperatures or noise without causing thermal throttling, fan surging or unnecessary wear.
What a GPU fan curve actually controls
A fan curve links a measured temperature to a fan command. As the GPU gets hotter, the software raises the fan speed; as it cools, the command falls again. Depending on the utility and card, the command may be expressed as a percentage, PWM duty cycle, RPM target or a mixture of these.
The same percentage does not produce the same result on every card. A compact two-slot cooler, a large three-fan heatsink and a blower cooler have different thermal capacity and airflow. Firmware may also limit the minimum speed, maximum speed, ramp rate or fan-stop behavior. Ambient temperature, case airflow, dust and the game’s rendering load change the result further.
For that reason, a curve copied from another GPU is only an experiment, not a specification. The safest general method is to preserve the supported automatic behavior, change one control in a small step, and compare temperatures and noise under a repeatable workload.

Before changing anything
Identify the exact card and software
Record the GPU model, board partner, BIOS or firmware version and the utility that exposes its fan controls. A Radeon card may use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, while a board partner may provide an additional utility. NVIDIA’s consumer controls vary by card and utility; the presence of an NVIDIA API function does not guarantee that your retail model exposes a usable manual curve.
- Write down the exact GPU model and whether it is a reference or partner-designed card.
- Update the graphics driver only if you already need to; do not change several variables before establishing a baseline.
- Note your room temperature and whether the case side panel, dust filters and front intake fans are in their normal positions.
- Save the existing profile or take screenshots so you can restore the automatic configuration.
Choose the temperature readings you will monitor
Do not assume that every temperature number describes the same part of the GPU. A utility may show a core or edge reading, a hotspot or junction reading, and one or more memory temperatures. The hottest reading can respond differently from the average core value, and some cards expose only a subset of these sensors.
Use the readings documented for your exact card. AMD’s explanation of the RX 5700 series, for example, describes distributed sensors and a hotspot or junction reading. AMD states that “Operating at up to 110C Junction Temperature during typical gaming usage is expected and within spec.” That statement applies to the RX 5700 series context in AMD’s article; it is not a safe target for every Radeon generation or any NVIDIA card.

- Load the automatic profile. Run the GPU exactly as the manufacturer supplied it. Record idle temperature, idle fan state, gaming temperature, hotspot or junction temperature if available, and whether the fan speed is steady or constantly changing.
- Select a representative game. Use a title and graphics setting that normally produce the heat and noise you want to solve. Test for long enough to reach a stable temperature rather than judging the first minute of a menu or loading screen.
- Change one setting. If the utility allows several curve points, move only one point or one control at a time. A small step, such as five percentage points where the utility permits it, makes cause and effect easier to identify; it is not a universal recommendation for a final speed.
- Apply and retest. Play the same scene or use the same built-in benchmark, then compare the same sensors and note fan noise. If the game or driver crashes, artifacts appear or the card throttles, restore the previous profile immediately.
- Check transitions. Watch what happens when a game starts, pauses, returns to the desktop and resumes. A curve that is quiet during a steady load can still be irritating if the fans repeatedly accelerate and stop at the load boundary.
- Save a named profile. Keep a baseline and, if supported, separate game profiles. AMD documents global tuning and per-game profiles in Adrenalin; a game profile can prevent an aggressive setting from affecting every workload.
Do not optimize for the lowest displayed temperature alone. A small temperature reduction that requires a large increase in noise is usually a poor gaming trade-off. Conversely, a modest fan increase may be worthwhile if it prevents sustained throttling or keeps hotspot and memory readings within the limits specified for your model.

AMD Radeon controls
Adrenalin Fan Tuning
AMD’s Adrenalin tuning documentation describes Fan Tuning, Zero RPM and maximum fan-speed controls on supported products. Open the performance or tuning area of Adrenalin, select the GPU fan controls, and use the labels shown for your card. The available switches and curve points depend on the graphics product and generation, so do not assume that an option shown in a screenshot exists on your model.
Changes made as global tuning affect the general profile. If the software offers a game profile, use it when one title needs a different balance. Apply the change, run the representative test, and save only after confirming that the setting persists through a restart.
Older Radeon Pro or FirePro workflow
AMD’s older Radeon Pro/FirePro Fan Control User Guide illustrates a different manual workflow: change Speed from Automatic to Manual, adjust Min and Target, and apply. That guide is an example for the documented Pro/FirePro software from 2018, not proof that current consumer Adrenalin has identical fields. If your interface lacks those controls, do not force the old procedure onto it.

Zero RPM: quiet idle versus continuous airflow
Zero RPM stops the fans during light loads when the card is cool. AMD describes it as a quiet mode in which the fans start as load and temperature increase. It is a supported-product feature, not a requirement that every card has or that every owner should disable.

If the fans oscillate around the start temperature, look for a hysteresis, delay or fan-stop threshold control. If the utility provides none, avoid placing a curve point exactly at the temperature where the fan starts; a wider margin can reduce repeated cycling. The correct choice is the one that produces acceptable noise and stable temperatures on your card.
NVIDIA controls and an important compatibility warning
NVIDIA documentation is platform-specific. The detailed temperature-to-fan profile examples in NVIDIA’s IGX Developer Guide describe IGX developer hardware, not a ready-made GeForce curve. The guide explains a useful concept: temperature steps can map to PWM or RPM values, a continuous governor can interpolate between steps, and hysteresis can determine when a control change is made. Those concepts explain how a curve behaves, but they should not be copied as consumer settings.
NVIDIA’s NVAPI GPU Cooler Interface, in Release 590 dated February 19, 2026, documents functions for retrieving tachometer readings and setting fan levels on supported targets. API documentation establishes that those functions exist; it does not establish that every GeForce board, driver or third-party utility exposes them. If your utility cannot set a curve for the exact card, use the controls it officially supports rather than assuming an undocumented tool will work.

Think in terms of behavior rather than a universal percentage chart. A quiet profile keeps the fan low through light and moderate loads, then increases speed more decisively near the temperature where your card begins to lose clock speed. A cooler profile raises airflow earlier and accepts more noise. A balanced profile uses the automatic curve as its starting point and changes only the portion that causes a problem.

Do not set every point to maximum speed. That can add noise without solving a case-airflow problem, and it leaves no headroom for a hotter ambient day. Likewise, do not use a very low fixed speed simply because the core reading looks acceptable; hotspot or memory sensors may be much higher.

Establish a baseline
With the automatic profile loaded, record the starting temperature, the highest temperature reached, fan behavior and whether clocks fall during the test. Repeat the same scene or benchmark once more if the result seems unusual. A single short spike is less informative than a sustained value under the workload you care about.
Test one change at a time
Change one curve point or one fan-control option, then repeat the same workload. Do not simultaneously undervolt, raise the power limit, change the frame-rate cap and alter the case fans; those changes make it impossible to know which adjustment helped. Keep notes with the date, driver, room conditions and profile name.

- Core or edge temperature, if exposed.
- Hotspot or junction temperature, if exposed.
- Memory temperature, if exposed and documented for the card.
- Fan speed and whether it is stable or oscillating.
- Clock behavior, frame pacing and signs of thermal throttling.
- Audible noise at your normal seating position.
Repeat the final candidate on a warmer day or after the case has reached steady heat. A curve that is acceptable in a cool room may be too quiet for summer conditions. Stay within the exact GPU model’s published operating guidance; no cross-vendor, all-model “safe gaming temperature” or fan-percentage curve is established by the manufacturer materials discussed here.

Diagnosing common problems
The GPU is still hot after raising fan speed
- Confirm that the change actually applied and that another profile did not overwrite it.
- Check hotspot or junction and memory readings; the visible core number may not be the limiting sensor.
- Inspect case intake and exhaust airflow, filters and dust. A GPU cannot exhaust heat effectively if the case air is already hot.
- Check whether the game’s frame rate or power load changed between tests.
- Restore automatic control if the new curve causes instability, then investigate airflow or hardware maintenance separately.
The fans constantly ramp up and down
- Identify which sensor triggers the change and whether the threshold is near the current operating temperature.
- Use a smoother rise, a wider gap between the fan-start temperature and fan-stop temperature, or a supported hysteresis/delay setting.
- Consider disabling Zero RPM if repeated starts are more noticeable than a low continuous speed.
- Test in a real game rather than a menu, where rapid load changes can exaggerate cycling.
The utility has no manual curve option
That may be a product or firmware limitation, not a configuration error. AMD states that Fan Tuning controls vary by product. NVIDIA’s NVAPI functions and IGX examples do not guarantee consumer-card compatibility. Keep the supported automatic profile unless the card manufacturer documents another method for your exact model.
The card becomes louder but performance does not improve
Return to the previous point and compare sustained clocks, frame pacing and temperatures. If performance was already stable, additional fan speed only bought a lower number on the sensor. A balanced curve is preferable when the extra cooling has no measurable gaming benefit.
What not to assume about temperatures
A temperature number without its sensor name and GPU model is incomplete. The RX 5700-series junction statement from AMD cannot be transferred to a newer Radeon, an older Radeon, or an NVIDIA card. The same caution applies to fan percentages: 50% may represent very different RPM, airflow and acoustics on different coolers.
Use the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact model when deciding whether a reading is acceptable. If the documentation does not state a limit for a particular sensor, do not invent one from a different product family. Treat sustained abnormal readings, sudden throttling, artifacts or shutdowns as a reason to restore automatic control and investigate the underlying cooling problem.
Do you need replacement hardware?
No purchase is required for the central task of choosing a fan curve. The supported controls described here are software settings. Replacement GPU fans, additional case fans and thermal paste address separate repair, maintenance or case-airflow problems. They may be appropriate after diagnosing one of those problems, but they are not universal solutions for selecting a quieter curve.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you know the exact GPU model, board partner and control utility?
- Did you save the automatic profile before changing it?
- Are you monitoring the sensor names that your card actually exposes?
- Did you test in the games and settings that matter to you?
- Did you change only one setting between tests?
- Is the noise improvement worth any temperature increase, or vice versa?
- Does the curve avoid rapid fan cycling?
- Does it remain acceptable with your normal case airflow and a warmer room?
- Can you restore the previous profile if the driver or utility resets the setting?
The best curve is therefore a measured compromise: start with the supported automatic behavior, tune only the controls your card exposes, and keep the least aggressive change that delivers stable gaming temperatures and acceptable noise.
The Bottom Line
Use your GPU’s automatic profile as the baseline, adjust its supported fan controls in small steps, and validate the result with the exact sensors and games you use. There is no universal temperature or percentage curve that is safe and quiet for every graphics card.
