For a golf watch that also works well as an everyday smartwatch, the Garmin Approach S50 is the strongest all-around fit in the available evidence. It combines course maps and automatic shot-distance recording with health and fitness features. The premium Garmin Approach S70 adds golf guidance and a larger-display option, while the Shot Scope G6 is a simpler mapping choice that does not track shots. Garmin has announced the Approach S72, but its availability and independent performance are not established here.
How to choose a golf watch
Start with what you need the watch to do during a round, then consider whether you will wear it away from the course. A large number of preloaded courses does not necessarily mean that every map layer is included: detailed maps, green contours, shot tracking, and club identification are distinct capabilities.
- Course information: Check whether the watch provides hole maps, hazard and layup distances, green views, or enhanced map details—and whether any require a paid membership.
- Shot data: Automatic shot-distance detection is not the same as identifying which club you used. Club-level data may require separate tags or sensors.
- On-course usability: Consider screen readability, whether the display is touch-enabled, and how easily you can see map and distance information while playing.
- Everyday features: Health tracking, activity functions, sleep monitoring, and notifications vary by model. A golf-focused GPS watch may not offer the same wellness tools as a smartwatch.
- Ownership costs: Compare the exact model and size, golf-mode and smartwatch-mode battery claims, and any membership fee. Prices and availability change; the sources cited here do not establish current retail prices.

Course counts and feature descriptions are manufacturer or publisher claims, not a guarantee that every course or map layer is available in every region. Garmin Approach S50: the balanced choice
Garmin describes the S50 as a GPS smartwatch with a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen and yardages to greens, hazards, and layups on more than 43,000 courses. Its PlaysLike Distance feature adjusts distance information, while wrist-based heart rate, stress tracking, Body Battery, and sleep monitoring broaden its usefulness away from golf. Garmin’s course count was listed on its product page accessed October 9, 2026; course availability and map detail can vary. Garmin Approach S50 product information.
#1 Best Overall
- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
Be careful not to treat the course count as proof that all map detail is included. Garmin says a Garmin Golf membership adds Premium CourseView maps, touch targeting, and green contour data. The Garmin Golf app can upload scorecards and provide detailed statistics and shot analyses, according to the S50 manual. Garmin S50 manual and product information.
Garmin Approach S70: premium golf guidance
The S70 is the option to consider if you want a premium Garmin golf feature set and a choice of 1.2- or 1.4-inch AMOLED display. Garmin lists a virtual caddie, club recommendations and dispersion information, enhanced PlaysLike distance, and fitness features for use on and off the course. Green-contour data requires an active Garmin Golf membership; do not assume that advanced map details are included with the watch purchase. Golf Monthly names the S70 its top pick in its comparison, an editorial judgment rather than a result of testing described here. Garmin product comparison; Golf Monthly comparison.
Rank #2

- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation

Shot Scope G6: mapping without shot tracking
Golf Monthly’s comparison reports 36,000 preloaded courses for the G6, along with color hole maps, hazard distances, doglegs, and layup points. It describes GPS runtime as two or more rounds. These are publisher-reported specifications, not independent lab results. The key trade-off is explicit: the G6 does not offer shot tracking, so it is a poor fit if automatic shot data is a priority. Golf Monthly comparison.
Bushnell iON Elite: a course-focused alternative
Golf Monthly reports 38,000 preloaded courses, slope functionality, a movable pin, and 12+ hours of battery life for the iON Elite. The battery figure is a comparison specification; the conditions and exact model configuration are not established in the cited material. Consider it as a GPS-watch alternative if those course features matter more to you than everyday health functions. Golf Monthly comparison.

Garmin Approach S72: announced, not a verified buying pick
Golf Monthly reported on October 6, 2026, that Garmin announced the S72 in 43 mm and 47 mm sizes, with an AMOLED display, titanium bezel, sapphire lens, fabric band, biometric tracking, and aerial imagery. That report establishes an announcement, not retail availability, a current price, or independent test results. Treat the S72 as a model to check for current status rather than assuming it is available or proven against the S70 and S50. Golf Monthly announcement report.
What shot tracking actually records
Garmin distinguishes automatic shot-distance recording from club identification. Its support information says AutoShot detects swing speed and impact with the ball to record shot distances. Score and statistic tracking also depends on using the correct hole and entering the score before teeing off on the next hole. Garmin Support: AutoShot and score tracking.

For club-level detail, Garmin describes two accessory approaches for compatible watches, including the S44, S50, and S70. CT10 sensors automatically track after they are attached to clubs and paired. CT1 tags require you to tap to pair before each shot. Check Garmin’s current compatibility information for your exact watch before buying accessories. Garmin CT1 and CT10 compatibility information.
Membership and map detail
Course coverage and course-map depth are separate considerations. Garmin says the S50 has yardages for more than 43,000 courses, but Premium CourseView maps, touch targeting, and green contour data are membership features. Garmin also identifies green-contour data as requiring an active Garmin Golf membership on the S70. Confirm the current membership benefits and availability in your region before relying on a particular map layer. Garmin product information.
