Yahoo Mail is the clearest choice if your only requirement is a larger free mailbox: Yahoo Help says every account includes 20 GB of free Yahoo Mail storage. Outlook.com lists 15 GB for email, while Gmail’s 15 GB is a shared Google Account pool that also covers Drive and Photos. Zoho Mail offers a 5 GB personal mailbox, and Proton Mail Free starts at 500 MB and can reach 1 GB after its listed onboarding steps.

The figures are not directly equivalent. This guide separates mailbox-only storage from shared cloud storage, explains what happens when quotas are exceeded, and gives a practical way to choose and migrate without assuming that a larger number automatically means a better email service.

Quick comparison: free storage by provider

The table ranks the services by the free amount documented on each provider’s current help or pricing page. “Mailbox” means the stated email allocation; “shared” means other services consume the same pool.

Provider Free amount in the cited source What the quota covers Important limit behavior or qualification
Yahoo Mail 20 GB Yahoo describes this as free Yahoo Mail storage for every account. The figure is a provider-stated quota, not an independent measurement. Yahoo Help
Outlook.com 15 GB of email storage Email storage is stated separately from Microsoft’s 5 GB cloud allocation, which is shared by files, photos, Outlook attachments and Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft says exceeding the applicable quota can stop Outlook.com from sending and receiving mail. Microsoft Support
Gmail / Google Account Up to 15 GB One pool shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Being over the pool can affect Gmail sending and receiving; Google describes possible content removal after an account remains over quota for two years. Google Support
Zoho Mail 5 GB Zoho calls this the default free mailbox for personal users. The cited page does not establish a larger free allowance or a different over-quota policy. Zoho Mail Help
Proton Mail Free 500 MB initially; up to 1 GB after the listed checklist Proton labels the allowance “Mail storage.” The higher amount depends on completing Proton’s specified onboarding actions. Proton pricing

On the evidence above, Yahoo is the only listed service with a verified free allowance above Gmail’s maximum account pool. Outlook matches Gmail’s headline number but describes it as email-only, so it can be more useful to someone whose Google storage is consumed by photos or files. Zoho and Proton are not higher-storage Gmail replacements on these published figures.

Why the storage numbers are easy to misread

Mailbox storage versus an account-wide pool

Gmail’s allowance belongs to the entire Google Account. A large photo library, Drive backups or shared files can consume space that would otherwise be available to messages and attachments. A “15 GB Gmail alternative” therefore needs a scope check: is the number reserved for mail, or is it another general-purpose cloud quota?

Outlook.com makes the opposite distinction in its documentation. It states that email has its own 15 GB allocation and that Microsoft cloud storage has a separate 5 GB allocation. The separation does not make the two systems independent in every operational sense: Microsoft warns that reaching a relevant limit can affect Outlook.com service. Treat the two quotas as separate accounting buckets with a documented service dependency, not as 20 GB of interchangeable email space.

Yahoo’s help page labels its figure Yahoo Mail storage. Zoho’s page calls its amount a mailbox, and Proton’s pricing page calls its amount Mail storage. Those labels make the numbers easier to compare with Gmail’s email use, but they still do not tell you how many messages or attachments you personally can store. Attachment size, message retention and the mix of large files determine that in practice.

“Free” is a plan allocation, not a guarantee of permanent capacity

All figures are published plan limits. Providers can revise tiers, eligibility or policies, and the linked pages do not provide a common publication date or a universal geographic guarantee. Check the provider page for your country and account type immediately before creating an address or moving a long-lived archive.

Yahoo Mail: the largest verified free mailbox here

Yahoo Help says, “Yahoo Mail currently includes 20 GB of free storage with every account.” That is the highest provider-stated free mail allowance in this comparison, giving Yahoo the straightforward answer to “Which free email has more storage than Gmail?” when the question is strictly about capacity.

The qualification matters: Yahoo describes the amount as Yahoo Mail storage, not as a combined cloud account pool. The source does not establish how Yahoo handles an account that reaches the limit, nor does it document every feature, region or verification requirement. Choose it for the published quota, then review the account’s own storage indicator after signup rather than assuming that all accounts receive identical treatment everywhere.

When Yahoo is the sensible first choice

  • You want the largest verified free mailbox in this set and do not need a separate cloud-storage comparison.
  • Your current Google space is being consumed by Drive or Photos and you want an email allocation described as mail storage.
  • You are willing to evaluate spam controls, import options, inactivity rules and privacy terms separately, because those characteristics are not established by the storage source.

Outlook.com: 15 GB reserved for email, plus separate Microsoft cloud storage

Microsoft Support states that Outlook.com provides 15 GB of free email storage separate from Microsoft cloud storage. Microsoft documents another 5 GB cloud allocation shared by files, photos, Outlook attachments and Microsoft 365 apps. For a reader whose Google Account is full because of non-email data, Outlook’s accounting model can be easier to understand: the email figure is explicitly identified as an email quota.

There is an important operational warning. Microsoft says that exceeding the applicable storage quota can stop Outlook.com from sending and receiving mail. Messages sent to an over-quota mailbox are returned to the sender and have to be sent again after space is freed. Microsoft also notes that deleted messages can continue to count while they remain in Deleted Items. Emptying that folder is therefore part of recovery, not merely housekeeping.

Use Outlook when the failure mode matters as much as the number

Outlook is a strong fit when you want a clearly stated email-only allowance and a documented response to over-quota conditions. Before moving an archive, identify whether large attachments are stored in the email bucket or the cloud bucket for your account, and monitor both indicators. The cited documentation does not support treating the two allocations as one pool.

Gmail: the benchmark, but not 15 GB dedicated to mail

Google Support says each Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. That is the baseline against which the alternatives are often advertised, but it is not 15 GB reserved for email. If your Drive or Photos usage is small, Gmail may still provide ample practical room; if those services are heavy users, the effective mailbox capacity can be much lower.

Google warns that being over quota can affect Gmail sending and receiving. Its support guidance also describes possible removal of account content after an account has remained over quota for two years. That is a materially different risk from simply being unable to add new messages, so check account usage before an over-quota period becomes prolonged.

Before leaving Gmail, measure the real problem

  1. Open Google’s storage information from the account currently used for Gmail, Drive and Photos.
  2. Record how much of the shared pool is attributed to each service.
  3. Decide whether deleting or moving non-email files solves the immediate problem without changing addresses.
  4. If email itself is the long-term constraint, compare the mailbox-only options in the table rather than comparing headline numbers alone.

The cited Google page establishes the allocation and over-quota warning, not a calculation of how many messages a given number of gigabytes holds. Your attachment patterns are the deciding variable.

Zoho Mail: a smaller free personal mailbox

Zoho Mail Help says personal users receive a free 5 GB mailbox by default when creating an account. That is substantially below Gmail’s published account allowance and should not be selected solely to gain storage.

Zoho may still fit a reader who values a separate mailbox identity and has a modest archive, but the source used here does not establish a higher free tier, a detailed over-quota process, geographic availability or a feature-by-feature comparison with the larger providers. Verify those conditions in the account you intend to use.

Proton Mail Free: privacy positioning with the smallest allowance

Proton’s pricing page says its free email plan starts with 500 MB of Mail storage. The same page lists onboarding actions that can raise the allowance to 1 GB: discovering privacy features, setting up automatic forwarding from Gmail, changing an account login to the Proton address and installing the mobile app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even at the checklist maximum, that is below Gmail’s published baseline. Proton therefore belongs in this comparison for readers who place its privacy-focused positioning ahead of storage volume, not as a capacity upgrade. The storage source does not provide a complete, current comparison of encryption, advertisements, interoperability, spam performance or reliability, so do not infer those attributes from the quota figure.

Moving existing mail to Proton

Proton says its Easy Switch feature can import existing folders and messages from Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook. That supports a documented migration route for those providers, but it does not establish that every message type, label, attachment or account configuration will transfer identically. Keep the original mailbox available until you have checked the imported folders and confirmed that important correspondence is present.

How to choose by the problem you actually have

Your priority Most defensible choice from the documented figures Reason
Maximum free mailbox capacity Yahoo Mail Its help page states the highest free Yahoo Mail storage figure in this set.
Email-specific quota while Google cloud data is the problem Outlook.com Microsoft states a separate 15 GB email allocation and separately documents 5 GB of cloud storage.
Keep the existing Google identity Gmail Cleaning the shared Google pool may be less disruptive than changing addresses.
Small personal mailbox with a 5 GB default Zoho Mail Zoho documents a 5 GB personal mailbox, but not a larger free allowance.
Privacy-oriented service matters more than capacity Proton Mail Free Its listed free storage is the smallest here, with a possible increase after onboarding actions.

This is a storage decision framework, not a complete service ranking. The cited pages do not establish consistent current data for advertising, IMAP or POP access, inactivity policies, verification requirements, regional eligibility, spam filtering or uptime. Investigate those independently if they affect your choice.

A careful migration plan

1. Inventory the account you are leaving

  • Measure total usage and identify whether attachments, sent mail, trash or non-email files are responsible.
  • List folders, labels, filters, forwarding rules, aliases and important correspondents you must recreate.
  • Keep a record of services that use the old address for sign-in or password recovery.

2. Create the new address without closing the old one

Register the new account and confirm that its displayed quota matches the provider’s plan information for your region. Do not cancel the old mailbox while imports, address changes and recovery testing are unfinished.

3. Move messages using a documented route

If you select Proton, Easy Switch is the provider-documented option for importing folders and messages from Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook. For other combinations, this source set does not establish an equivalent import tool, so follow the destination provider’s current instructions rather than assuming a one-click transfer exists.

4. Update identity and recovery dependencies

  1. Change the email address on financial, government, work and subscription accounts.
  2. Replace the old address used for password recovery and multifactor prompts.
  3. Send test messages to and from unrelated accounts, including a message with an attachment.
  4. Keep forwarding or an automatic reply only while you are monitoring the transition; remove it once the old mailbox is no longer needed.

5. Preserve an independent copy

Do not treat a provider mailbox as your only archive. Keep an offline or separately managed copy of irreplaceable correspondence before deleting the old account. External storage can hold a copy, but it does not increase the hosted mailbox quota.

What to do when a mailbox is full

Gmail

Because Gmail shares its pool with Drive and Photos, free space in whichever service is consuming the most storage. Google’s warning covers possible sending and receiving problems while over quota and potential account-content removal after two years over quota; do not wait for either consequence before exporting important data.

Outlook.com

Check both the email and Microsoft cloud indicators. Delete unneeded large messages, then empty Deleted Items because Microsoft says deleted mail can still count there. If sending to the account produces a bounce, free space first and ask the sender to resend; Microsoft says messages returned during the over-quota condition are not delivered automatically later.

Yahoo, Zoho and Proton

The sources used here state their allocations but do not document a comparable, provider-specific over-quota workflow. Use the account’s current warning and support documentation rather than assuming that Gmail’s or Outlook’s behavior applies.

Common mistakes when comparing free email storage

  • Comparing 15 GB with 15 GB without checking scope: Gmail’s amount is shared with Drive and Photos, while Outlook labels its amount as email storage.
  • Counting separate cloud storage as extra mailbox space: Outlook’s 5 GB Microsoft cloud allocation is not described as additional Outlook email capacity.
  • Assuming a quota predicts message count: A few large attachments can consume more space than thousands of short messages.
  • Ignoring deleted folders: Outlook specifically says Deleted Items can continue counting toward storage.
  • Treating a checklist increase as automatic: Proton’s higher allowance depends on completing the listed actions.
  • Choosing on storage alone: The cited pages do not settle privacy, ads, protocols, spam handling, inactivity or regional eligibility.
  • Closing the old address too early: Account recovery, imported folders and forgotten sign-ins can depend on the original mailbox for months.

Bottom line for a storage-first decision

Choose Yahoo Mail if the largest verified free mailbox is the deciding factor. Choose Outlook.com if you want a separately stated email quota and are prepared to monitor the linked Microsoft cloud limit. Stay with Gmail if cleaning the shared Google pool is simpler than changing addresses. Treat Zoho as a 5 GB personal-mail option and Proton Mail Free as a privacy-oriented choice whose free storage is below Gmail’s baseline. Whichever service you select, verify the live quota in your account and reread the provider’s linked policy before moving an archive, because plan limits and enforcement can change.
