Ghost(Pro) is the best choice for most Ghost publishers in 2026 because it removes server administration and includes official support. A self-hosted Ghost 6 installation on a 2GB VPS is the lowest-cost route if you are comfortable maintaining Linux, backups and email delivery. Third-party managed hosts sit between those choices, while Fly.io is mainly suited to technically experienced users who accept more configuration work.

Best Ghost hosting options at a glance

The right host depends less on the Ghost software than on who will operate the infrastructure. Compare each option on its complete monthly cost, maintenance time, available memory, email deliverability and how easily you can move later.

Option Best for Indicative cost What you operate Main trade-off
Ghost(Pro) Publishers who want managed hosting and official support Starter is listed at $18/month billed yearly on the official pricing page; Publisher is $29 and Business is $199, also billed yearly Almost nothing beyond your publication Higher recurring price and plan limits
Third-party managed hosts People seeking less administration at a possible mid-range price Magic Pages, Midnight and PikaPods are cited as alternatives, but current prices were not independently verified Usually your content and settings; the host handles the server Different support, backup and migration policies
Self-hosted VPS with Docker Compose Technical publishers seeking the lowest predictable infrastructure cost About $12/month is a realistic secondary estimate for a 2GB VPS plus email delivery and backups; raw server estimates can be about $3–4/month before those services Updates, backups, monitoring, DNS, security and email deliverability Lowest cash cost but highest operational responsibility
Ghost-CLI on a VPS Administrators who prefer the traditional command-line installation VPS and supporting-service costs; provider pricing varies The same server and application duties as other self-hosting Still popular, but Docker Compose is the primary official Ghost 6 installation approach
Fly.io Technically inclined users with a very tight budget Current pricing was not established Deployment, storage, scaling and operations Older comparisons mention it, but current cost and suitability need verification

Ghost(Pro): the default recommendation for most sites

Ghost(Pro) is Ghost’s own managed hosting service. You pay Ghost to run the publication rather than assembling a server, database, content-delivery layer and maintenance process yourself. Secondary guides describe email, CDN delivery, backups and software updates as bundled, but those inclusions should be confirmed against the live plan details before purchase.

The official pricing page currently lists the following figures, all billed yearly. Because one earlier Ghost Forum post reports a different Starter price, check Ghost’s live pricing page at checkout.

Plan Published price Published limits or features Best fit
Starter $18/month billed yearly on the 2026 official pricing page Up to 1,000 members and one staff user A small publication run by one person
Publisher $29/month billed yearly Three staff users, custom themes, paid subscriptions and advanced analytics A publication monetising membership or requiring theme control
Business $199/month billed yearly 15 staff users, priority support and up to 10,000 members A larger team or established membership business
Custom Quote-based 99.9% uptime SLA and a dedicated IP option are listed Organisations with contractual reliability or networking requirements

Resolve the Starter-price conflict before subscribing

A July 2025 Ghost Forum post lists Starter at $15/month and says paid-tier monetisation was removed from that plan in that update. Ghost developer documentation also describes Ghost(Pro) as starting “from $15/mo,” while the official 2026 pricing page summary shows $18/month billed yearly. Publisher at $29 and Business at $199 are consistent across the available sources; Starter is not. Treat $18 as the current published figure only after checking the live page, and do not assume that an older $15 quote or an older feature set still applies.

Creator and Team names appear on Ghost’s concierge-migration material, but current prices for those names were not confirmed. There is no confirmed permanent free tier. A 14-day trial is mentioned by one secondary source, but its current availability should also be checked directly.

When Ghost(Pro) is worth the premium

  • You want to publish rather than administer a Linux server.
  • Your mailing list, membership payments or analytics are business-critical and you prefer one vendor’s support path.
  • You need a custom theme or paid subscriptions without stitching together multiple services.
  • You would lose more in staff time and downtime than you would save on a cheaper VPS.

The important cost is not just the subscription. Managed hosting transfers patching, backup scheduling, infrastructure monitoring and much of the email-delivery work to the provider. That is valuable when the publication is operated by a writer, marketer or small editorial team rather than a systems administrator.

Third-party managed Ghost hosts

Magic Pages, Midnight and PikaPods are named in secondary comparisons as managed alternatives to Ghost(Pro). They can be attractive when you want a hosted Ghost instance without paying for the highest official plan, but their current prices, resource limits, support scope and included services were not verified here.

Questions to ask before choosing one

  • Is the listed price monthly, annual, introductory or subject to later renewal changes?
  • Are transactional email, newsletters, CDN delivery, SSL certificates and off-site backups included?
  • How frequently are Ghost and the underlying operating system updated?
  • Can you export the Ghost content and members in standard formats and move the domain without downtime?
  • What support channel is available, and is migration assistance included?
  • Are there limits on members, staff accounts, storage, traffic or custom integrations?

One secondary list places PikaPods from $3.30/month, but that figure is unverified and should not be used as a budget commitment. Midnight is described as more affordable than Ghost(Pro) in vendor-adjacent material, which is not an independent price confirmation. Compare a current order screen and terms of service, not a cached listicle.

Self-hosting Ghost on a VPS

Self-hosting gives you control over the server and usually the lowest cash outlay. Secondary estimates put raw server cost around $3–4/month, excluding your time and supporting services. A more realistic operating budget is about $12/month for a 2GB VPS plus email delivery and backups. Those are estimates, not a universal price: region, provider, storage, outbound email volume and backup retention can change the total.

The practical memory floor

For a production Ghost site with MySQL on the same machine, plan for roughly 2GB of RAM. A DigitalOcean community discussion titled “Ghost Blog on 1GB Droplet Crashes Every 5 Days or So” is cited in secondary guidance as evidence that 1GB can be unreliable when the database shares the server. A 2GB instance is the more honest starting point for a small production publication; it is not a guarantee against poorly configured workloads or traffic spikes.

What you become responsible for

  • Applying Ghost, operating-system and dependency updates.
  • Taking backups, storing them off the VPS and testing restoration.
  • Configuring DNS, HTTPS, firewall rules and administrative access.
  • Keeping the database healthy and watching disk, memory and CPU usage.
  • Setting up email delivery and protecting sender reputation.
  • Investigating outages instead of opening a managed-host support ticket.

The headline saving is therefore a trade: lower invoice, higher operator time and risk. If a failed update or missed backup could cost a day of publishing or a valuable member list, include that exposure in your comparison.

Docker Compose versus Ghost-CLI

Docker Compose: the Ghost 6 primary path

Deployable.sh’s 2026 Ghost guidance describes Docker Compose as Ghost 6’s primary official installation method. Compose packages Ghost and its supporting services into a repeatable deployment, which makes it easier to recreate an environment, move between VPS providers and document what is running.

  1. Provision a VPS with at least 2GB RAM for a small production installation.
  2. Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using the distribution-supported packages.
  3. Create a Compose project for Ghost and its database, with persistent volumes for content and database data.
  4. Set the production URL, database credentials, mail settings and administrator account as environment values or protected secrets.
  5. Put the installation behind HTTPS, point your domain’s DNS records to the VPS and verify that the canonical URL matches the Ghost configuration.
  6. Schedule off-server backups for both the database and the content volume before inviting real members.
  7. Record the image version and deployment procedure so a rollback or migration is repeatable.

These are operational steps rather than a provider-specific recipe. Exact Compose files and supported versions change, so use the current Ghost documentation and image guidance when you implement them.

Ghost-CLI: a viable traditional workflow

Ghost-CLI on a VPS still works and remains popular according to secondary guides. It can feel more direct if you already administer Linux services and prefer commands that install Ghost into a conventional server layout. It does not remove the responsibilities of self-hosting: updates, backups, monitoring and email delivery remain yours. For a new Ghost 6 deployment, Docker Compose is the better-aligned starting point; choose Ghost-CLI when an existing system, team standard or migration plan specifically calls for it.

Where Fly.io fits

A 2024 comparison recommends Fly.io for tight budgets and technically inclined users. Current Fly.io pricing was not established, so it should not be presented as the cheapest option in 2026. Its appeal is flexibility: an experienced operator can deploy close to users and tune resources. The cost is additional decisions around persistent storage, backups, networking and operational visibility compared with a straightforward VPS. Treat it as an infrastructure project, not a managed Ghost subscription.

Cost or effort Ghost(Pro) Third-party managed host Self-hosted VPS
Hosting payment Published tiers from $18/month billed yearly for Starter, $29 for Publisher and $199 for Business; verify live pricing Varies; current figures for the named services were not verified Raw server estimates around $3–4/month; a realistic combined budget is about $12/month with email and backups
Email Reported as bundled by secondary guides; confirm plan terms Check whether sending and deliverability support are included You configure and monitor delivery; include a separate service if needed
Backups Reported as bundled by secondary guides; confirm retention and restoration terms Check frequency, retention and download access You schedule, pay for storage and test restores
Updates Reported as managed Depends on the host’s policy You plan and execute them
Support Official Ghost support; priority support is listed for Business Host-specific Community documentation or your own expertise
Migration effort Strongest if you want the official Ghost environment; exports remain important Depends on export and import tools More control, but you must perform the move

A $3 VPS is not a $3 hosting solution once backups, email, storage, monitoring and your labor are counted. Conversely, the managed plan’s higher price may be economical if it prevents one outage or eliminates recurring administration.

Choose by your publishing situation

Choose Ghost(Pro) when reliability and time matter most

Select the official service if you have no Linux administrator, need predictable support or are building paid memberships. Publisher is the first listed tier that includes custom themes, paid subscriptions and advanced analytics. Business adds higher member and staff limits, priority support and a 10,000-member allowance. The Custom tier is for organisations that need a stated 99.9% uptime SLA or a dedicated IP option.

Choose a 2GB VPS with Docker Compose when cash cost is the priority

This route suits someone comfortable with Linux who can maintain a patch calendar and a tested backup process. Start at 2GB rather than trying to force a production database and Ghost into a 1GB machine. Keep backups outside the server and budget for email delivery; otherwise the apparent saving is misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a third-party managed host when you want a middle ground

Use this path when you want someone else to run the server but need to investigate alternatives to Ghost(Pro). Make the decision from current terms: included backups, email, support response, member limits and export rights matter more than a low headline price.

Choose Fly.io only if you already operate cloud infrastructure

Its flexibility is useful to an experienced operator, but unverified current pricing and the additional storage and backup decisions make it a poor default for a first Ghost site.

Migration and portability planning

Decide how you would leave before you commit. Keep regular Ghost content and member exports, maintain a copy of your theme and integrations, and document DNS records and mail settings. A move from a VPS to Ghost(Pro), or between managed hosts, is much easier when the source database and content volumes are backed up and the domain’s DNS TTL has been reduced ahead of the cutover.

  1. Export content and members from the current Ghost installation and download the theme and integration configuration.
  2. Build and test the destination on a temporary hostname, including images, navigation, memberships and email.
  3. Restore or import the data, then check redirects, canonical URLs, RSS and sitemap output.
  4. Lower DNS TTL before the final switch and schedule the cutover during a low-traffic period.
  5. Point the domain to the destination, verify HTTPS and transactional email, and keep the old host available until the new site is confirmed.

Managed providers differ in how much of this they perform. Get written confirmation of export formats and migration assistance rather than assuming that “managed” means “portable.”

Reliability, email and backup checks

Reliability

Ask what uptime figure is contractual and what is merely an aspiration. Ghost(Pro)’s Custom description includes a 99.9% uptime SLA; the lower tiers should not be assumed to carry the same guarantee. For self-hosting, reliability depends on the VPS, your update process, disk capacity and recovery plan.

Email deliverability

Ghost’s newsletter and member workflows are only useful if messages arrive. Confirm whether the host supplies delivery infrastructure or expects you to connect a provider. On a VPS, configure the required authentication records, monitor bounces and complaints, and separate publication mail from unrelated server notifications. A low hosting bill does not compensate for messages landing in spam.

Backups

“Backups included” is incomplete without retention, location and restore testing. Ask how many recovery points exist, whether they are stored off the production machine and whether you can download them. For a VPS, automate database and content backups, retain copies outside the provider’s account and perform a test restore before a real incident.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing a 1GB VPS for production: shared database and Ghost workloads can exhaust memory. Start around 2GB and monitor actual usage.
  • Comparing only headline prices: add email, backups, storage, monitoring and the value of your time.
  • Trusting an old Starter quote: the $15 and $18 figures conflict. Verify the live Ghost pricing page and current feature list.
  • Assuming every managed host includes the same services: confirm update policy, backup retention, email and export rights in writing.
  • Running without an off-server backup: a snapshot on the same VPS will not help if the account or disk fails.
  • Skipping a migration rehearsal: test imports, theme assets, redirects and email before changing production DNS.
  • Treating Docker as automatic maintenance: Compose improves repeatability, but you still need a patch schedule, image review, backups and monitoring.

Recommended decision

For a professional publication whose operator’s time is scarce, start with Ghost(Pro) and select the tier that matches staff, member and monetisation needs. For a technically capable owner focused on the cheapest dependable setup, use Ghost 6 with Docker Compose on a 2GB VPS and budget roughly $12/month for the server plus email and backups rather than relying on the raw $3–4 server estimate. Consider a third-party managed host only after checking its current terms, and reserve Fly.io or a similar platform for people comfortable operating cloud infrastructure. Whatever you choose, verify live prices and service inclusions immediately before ordering because several figures and bundled features reported for 2026 are subject to change.
