There is no single best replacement for Gboard. Microsoft SwiftKey is the most practical first comparison if you want extensive customization and Windows integration. HeliBoard and FUTO Keyboard suit people who prioritize offline operation, while Samsung Keyboard is the natural choice for many Galaxy owners. Simple Keyboard is for users who value a stripped-down layout more than predictive and convenience features.
Choose by the features you actually use, how comfortable you are with on-device versus account-connected processing, your phone’s ecosystem, and how much installation effort you will accept. Availability and individual features can vary by device, region, language, and Android version.
What to evaluate before replacing Gboard
An Android keyboard is both an input tool and a privileged app: it can receive the text you type, provide suggestions, access clipboard functions, and in some cases connect to cloud services. A sensible comparison therefore starts with more than appearance.
- Data handling: Determine whether personalisation and voice processing stay on the phone, or whether optional accounts and cloud features are involved.
- Input tools: Check for gesture typing, autocorrect, spell checking, voice input, clipboard history, emoji access, and one-handed or split layouts.
- Device integration: Galaxy-specific features and Windows synchronisation can matter more than a generic feature checklist.
- Installation route: Play Store installation is simplest. GitHub or F-Droid distribution requires extra steps and more responsibility for updates.
- Complexity: Toolbars, themes, predictions, and writing assistants are useful to some people and distracting to others.
No authoritative industry-wide study in the available material establishes which keyboard is fastest, most accurate, safest, or best for every language. Treat poll percentages and product descriptions as directional information, not laboratory results.

Microsoft SwiftKey: the broadest feature alternative
SwiftKey is the sensible first alternative for someone who wants Gboard-like convenience without giving up customisation. The current comparison describes split layout options, Copilot writing assistance, and clipboard syncing with Windows when the keyboard is connected to the same Microsoft account. Those features make it especially relevant if you already use Microsoft services on a phone and Windows PC.
What SwiftKey offers
- Layout flexibility: Split layouts can be useful on a large phone, foldable, or tablet when your thumbs are positioned on opposite sides of the screen.
- Writing assistance: Copilot features are presented as an optional aid for drafting and revising text. Availability can depend on app version, account state, language, and region.
- Cross-device clipboard: Clipboard synchronisation with Windows is tied to using the same Microsoft account on the relevant devices.
- Familiar transition: Its conventional predictive-keyboard design means you can keep a toolbar, suggestions, and personalisation instead of moving immediately to a minimalist app.
These are product capabilities described by the June 29, 2026 comparison, not independent measurements of typing speed or accuracy. If a particular language or writing feature is essential, verify its current support in the Play Store listing and SwiftKey settings.
SwiftKey privacy choices
Microsoft’s support documentation distinguishes local keyboard data from optional account services. Microsoft says that, without opting into a SwiftKey account, personal and language data generated by SwiftKey on Android is stored locally and is not transferred. Signing in enables services such as Backup & Sync, and those services can send data for cloud processing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Microsoft also says the keyboard does not learn from fields marked as password fields and does not remember long credit-card numbers. The company documents two qualifications: an app or website may incorrectly mark a field, and a revealed password field may no longer be recognised as a password field. These are Microsoft’s policy statements, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every app labels fields correctly.
Who should choose SwiftKey
Pick SwiftKey when you want the largest set of mainstream conveniences, need split layouts, or would genuinely use Windows clipboard synchronisation. During setup, review account prompts rather than accepting every optional service automatically. If your priority is a strictly offline keyboard with no account path, HeliBoard or FUTO is a closer fit.

HeliBoard: offline-focused and open source
HeliBoard is described as a free, open-source keyboard intended to operate offline. Its feature set includes autocorrect, gesture typing, clipboard history, incognito mode, and customisation controls. That combination targets people who want modern input tools while keeping the core keyboard away from network services.
Why HeliBoard stands out
- Offline design: The comparison presents HeliBoard as usable without an online account or cloud dependency for its core functions.
- Gesture typing and autocorrect: You can retain swipe-based entry and automatic corrections rather than sacrificing speed for privacy.
- Clipboard history: A built-in history is useful for reusing recent snippets without switching to another app.
- Incognito mode: This gives you a deliberate way to reduce learning or personalisation while entering sensitive text.
- Open-source distribution: The project is obtained through GitHub or F-Droid instead of the Play Store.
Installing HeliBoard safely
Because HeliBoard is not obtained through the Play Store according to the cited comparison, installation requires more attention than installing a conventional app. Use the project’s official GitHub release or its F-Droid listing, confirm that the package is the intended project, and read the installation and update instructions shown there. Android may require you to allow installation from the browser or file manager you use; enable that permission only for the installation, then disable it again if you do not need it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Back up important data and note your current keyboard so you can switch back if necessary.
- Obtain the build from the project’s official GitHub or F-Droid distribution page, not an unidentified mirror.
- Install the package and review Android’s keyboard warning before continuing.
- Open Settings, then search for Keyboard or On-screen keyboard, and enable HeliBoard under the available keyboards.
- Select HeliBoard as the default input method and configure languages, gesture typing, autocorrect, clipboard history, and incognito behavior.
- Keep the official distribution source bookmarked so you can check for updates; sideloaded apps may not update through your normal Play Store queue.
HeliBoard’s open-source status does not, by itself, prove that the installed package is secure or that every release has been independently audited. The available material establishes no independent security certification.
FUTO Keyboard: offline voice typing
FUTO Keyboard is the strongest option in this group when local voice input is more important than having the smallest installation. The comparison describes voice typing that runs offline with a Whisper-based local model and says the app is available through the Play Store.
Voice model trade-offs
Local speech recognition avoids sending the recording to a remote service for transcription, but the model has a storage and performance cost. The source notes that larger models use more storage and may work poorly on budget phones. Treat that as a product limitation described in coverage, not as a benchmark conducted across devices.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
- Choose a smaller model when storage is tight or your phone has limited processing headroom.
- Consider a larger model only if your device has enough free space and you accept potentially longer processing.
- Test recognition with your actual accent, language, names, and noisy environments before making FUTO your only keyboard.
Who should choose FUTO
FUTO suits users who want a Play Store installation and offline-oriented voice entry. It is less suitable when storage is scarce, the phone is an entry-level model, or you rarely dictate text. The available evidence does not establish comparative voice accuracy, latency, or language coverage, so check the current listing and settings for the languages you need.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Samsung Keyboard: the Galaxy-integrated choice
Samsung Keyboard is most relevant when your phone is a Galaxy device. Its advantages come from One UI integration rather than from being a universal replacement for every Android handset. The comparison describes Galaxy AI writing features, Samsung Pass integration, and additional customisation through the Good Lock KeysCafe module.
Integration and availability
- One UI behavior: The keyboard is designed to match Samsung’s system menus, account services, and device features.
- Galaxy AI writing tools: Supported writing features may vary by model, software version, region, language, and account configuration.
- Samsung Pass: Integration can make credential-related autofill more convenient within the Samsung ecosystem.
- KeysCafe: Good Lock’s KeysCafe module provides additional layout and appearance customisation on supported devices.
Galaxy ownership is the deciding factor. On a non-Samsung phone, these integrations may be unavailable or irrelevant, while a Galaxy owner may lose useful system-level behavior by switching to a third-party keyboard. Check your exact One UI version and model before assuming an AI or Pass feature is present.
Simple Keyboard: deliberately minimal
Simple Keyboard is for people who want an uncluttered, standard layout and are willing to give up most assistance features. The comparison describes adjustable keyboard height, light and dark themes, and basic gestures.
What it leaves out
Simple Keyboard is specifically described as lacking spell check, autocorrect, swipe typing, an emoji panel, and a toolbar. Those omissions are not defects to work around; they are the reason to select it if you want fewer controls, fewer suggestions, and a less crowded screen.

- Use the height setting and themes to make the basic layout comfortable without adding feature layers.
Feature-by-feature decision guide
If privacy and offline operation come first
Start with HeliBoard if you want an open-source, offline-focused keyboard with gesture typing, autocorrect, clipboard history, and incognito mode. Choose FUTO instead when offline voice input is a central requirement and your phone has enough storage and processing capacity. SwiftKey can keep core personal and language data local when you do not opt into an account, but its account services introduce a different cloud-processing choice.
If customization matters most
SwiftKey offers split layouts and a broad mainstream feature set. Galaxy owners should also examine Samsung Keyboard with KeysCafe, because its strongest customization is tied to Samsung’s own software. HeliBoard is the better fit when you want detailed controls without an account-oriented ecosystem.
If you use Windows every day
SwiftKey is the only option in this comparison with a specifically described Windows clipboard-sync feature. It requires the same Microsoft account on the participating devices and an enabled sync service, so it is not an anonymous offline workflow.
If voice typing is essential
FUTO is the option with explicitly described offline voice typing. Verify model size, available storage, language support, and behavior on your phone before replacing your current keyboard.
If you want the fewest distractions
Simple Keyboard offers the narrowest feature set. HeliBoard is a better compromise if you still want swipe typing, autocorrect, and clipboard history while keeping an offline orientation.

How to switch keyboards on Android
Android menu names vary by manufacturer, but the process is consistent.
- Install the keyboard from its supported distribution channel. For Play Store apps, use the listing associated with the developer; for HeliBoard, follow the official GitHub or F-Droid instructions.
- Open Settings and search for Keyboard, On-screen keyboard, or Virtual keyboard.
- Open Manage keyboards or the equivalent screen, then enable the new keyboard.
- Read Android’s warning about keyboard access and continue only if the app’s data behavior matches your comfort level.
- Choose Default keyboard and select the new app.
- Open the keyboard’s own settings to select languages, layout, correction behavior, voice input, clipboard handling, themes, and privacy options.
- Test it in a notes app, a browser search field, a messaging app, and a password field. Confirm that switching back to your old keyboard remains possible.
Common problems after switching
- The keyboard does not appear: Return to Settings > Keyboard, confirm it is enabled, and select it again as the default.
- Voice input is missing: Check whether the app supports voice typing on your device and language; offline models may require a separate download.
- Clipboard history is empty: Android versions and manufacturers can restrict clipboard access. Review the keyboard’s clipboard setting and test with newly copied text.
- Predictions are poor: Confirm the correct language pack, allow the keyboard time to learn only if you accept that behavior, and compare with a second supported language setting.
- Battery or performance concerns: Disable unused toolbars, large voice models, or continuous account services, then test again.
- You need to recover quickly: Use the keyboard-switch icon on the on-screen keyboard, or return to Settings > Keyboard > Default keyboard and select the previous app.
What the available poll can—and cannot—tell you
An Android Authority poll attached to its June 29, 2026 comparison displayed 3,774 votes. SwiftKey received 28%, HeliBoard 25%, Samsung Keyboard 23%, FUTO Keyboard 13%, Simple Keyboard 8%, and Other 3%.
Those numbers show how respondents to one publisher’s poll divided their preferences at that time. They are not Android market share, a representative survey, or a controlled comparison of accuracy, speed, privacy, accessibility, or reliability. Use them as evidence that several alternatives have meaningful interest, not as a league table.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLimits you should check before committing
Features and availability can change after October 13, 2026, the date of the current comparison material. The available sources do not establish language-by-language coverage, accessibility quality, latency, typing accuracy, or independent security properties for these keyboards.
- Open each app’s current listing or release notes for supported Android versions and languages.
- Check whether your manufacturer restricts third-party keyboards in particular secure fields or work profiles.
- Test accessibility features such as key size, contrast, haptic feedback, TalkBack behavior, and one-handed reach on your own device.
- Review permissions and account prompts after every major update, especially when enabling sync, writing assistance, or voice services.
- Keep a second keyboard installed until you have tested messaging, banking, password entry, dictation, and multilingual typing.
Bottom line
Start with SwiftKey for the broadest customization and Windows-oriented features, HeliBoard for an offline open-source approach, FUTO for offline voice typing, Samsung Keyboard for Galaxy integration, and Simple Keyboard only when minimalism outweighs predictive and convenience tools. The right replacement is the one whose data behavior, feature set, distribution method, and device support match your priorities—not the one with the highest percentage in a single poll.
