For drivers in the United States and Canada, GasBuddy is the strongest dedicated gas-price app, Waze is the best choice when you want prices inside a navigation route, and AAA Gas Prices is the best benchmark for official daily averages. In Spain, GasGuru is the regional option covered here.
No service can guarantee that the price shown in an app is the price at the pump. Community reports can age quickly, official averages describe a market rather than one station, and displayed prices can differ by payment method or fuel grade. Use the app to narrow your choices, then check the station sign and the in-app update time before turning in.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Coverage and data source | Freshness information | Navigation and vehicle integration | Notable privacy information |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GasBuddy | Finding stations and comparing prices in the U.S. and Canada | More than 100 million Google Play downloads; user-submitted prices and reviews; rewards and payment features | No guaranteed reporting interval is established; check the age of each report | Dedicated search and savings workflow; the supplied listing does not establish CarPlay or Android Auto support | Google Play data-safety disclosure says location, personal information and device IDs may be shared with third parties |
| Waze | Checking prices while already navigating | Community-updated prices for regular, midgrade, premium and diesel | Community updates; no universal alert cadence is established | Sort by price or distance, add a station as a route stop, and project to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto | Controls for personalized ads, visibility, navigation history and account deletion; location may be checked outside active navigation depending on settings |
| AAA Gas Prices | Authoritative national, state and local averages | OPIS updates the website daily; up to 120,000 stations are surveyed each day with WEX | Daily averages | Average-price reference rather than an in-route station finder | AAA says volunteered personal information is not sold or shared with other organizations for commercial purposes; the website automatically collects IP address, timestamps, pages visited and search criteria |
| GasGuru | Drivers in Spain who want a local price map | Public official data described in its September 1, 2026 terms | Approximately every 30 minutes | Regional price lookup; the terms do not establish CarPlay or Android Auto support | The terms warn that a displayed price may not match the pump price; broader privacy controls are not established in the supplied information |
The table separates three different jobs: locating a cheap nearby station, deciding whether prices are moving in your area, and checking an official market average. An app can be excellent at one job without being the best at all three.
Which gas-price app should you use?
Choose GasBuddy for dedicated price hunting
GasBuddy has the broadest dedicated-app profile in this comparison. Its Google Play listing reports more than 100 million downloads, coverage in the United States and Canada, user-submitted prices and reviews, plus rewards and payment features. That combination makes it useful when your main task is to search several stations, compare prices and decide where to stop before you start driving.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
User reporting is also the reason to treat every result as a lead rather than a promise. A station can change its price after a driver submits a report, and a report may represent a different fuel grade or payment condition from the one you need. Open the station details, look for the report time, and compare the result with the sign when you arrive.
Choose Waze when the stop must fit your route
Waze is the most complete in-route workflow. It lets you search for gas stations, sort nearby results by price or distance, view community-updated prices for regular, midgrade, premium and diesel, and add a selected station as a quick stop on an existing route. Its dashboard projection supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so the price search can remain on the vehicle display instead of requiring a separate phone interaction.
This is the practical advantage over a stand-alone price map: Waze can weigh a station’s price against the detour you would actually drive. A station that is a few cents cheaper may cost more in fuel and time if it requires leaving the route and rejoining it several miles later.
Choose AAA for a trustworthy daily baseline
AAA’s Gas Prices website is the strongest source here for an official benchmark. AAA says the service is updated daily by the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), and that up to 120,000 stations are surveyed every day in cooperation with WEX. It publishes national, state and local averages.
An average is not a quote for the nearest pump. Use the AAA gas-price monitor to answer questions such as “Is my state running above the national average?” or “Did the regional average move since yesterday?” Then use a station-level app to find a particular address and verify the posted price.
Choose GasGuru only when Spain is your market
GasGuru is regional rather than a general North American alternative. Its terms dated September 1, 2026 describe Spain coverage and public official data refreshed approximately every 30 minutes. The same terms caution that a displayed price may not match the pump price. That combination can be useful for Spanish drivers who want frequent official-data refreshes, but it should not be presented as a substitute for U.S. or Canadian coverage.
How the price data is produced
Community reports: broad station-level visibility
GasBuddy and Waze rely on drivers and other community participants to submit or update station prices. Community data can expose a very recent change before a daily average reflects it, and it can cover individual grades such as diesel or premium. Its weaknesses are uneven participation, stale entries and occasional mismatches between the submitted grade and the grade selected in the app.

- Check the timestamp or age indicator attached to a station report.
- Confirm that the fuel grade matches your vehicle and the result you are comparing.
- Expect less reliable freshness on lightly traveled roads or at stations with few active users.
- Use the station sign as the final authority, especially after a long detour.
Official and aggregated feeds: consistent benchmarks
AAA’s OPIS and WEX process is designed to produce a repeatable national, state and local view. Daily surveying of up to 120,000 stations gives the averages substantial breadth, but the figure is still an aggregate. It cannot account for a single station’s local competition, cash discount, membership price or a change made after the daily update.
Public official data in Spain
GasGuru’s terms describe public official Spanish data refreshed about every 30 minutes. That is a stated update target, not a guarantee that every station publishes a new value on that schedule. The terms’ warning about pump-price differences remains important even with a frequent feed.

Alerts, timestamps and the stale-price problem
Readers often search for an app with gas-price alerts, but the evidence available for these services does not establish one universal push-alert cadence. Waze documents community-updated prices and route integration; AAA documents daily updates; GasBuddy’s listing confirms user reporting without promising an update interval. Do not assume that an alert means a station has changed at the moment you receive it.
When an app offers a favorite-station, watchlist or notification setting, treat it as a convenience layer and inspect the station’s last-reported time. A useful personal alert routine is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Save the stations you regularly use, such as those near home, work and the start of a road trip.
- Enable only the price or favorite-station notifications you actually need; broad marketing notifications can obscure a useful change.
- Before leaving, open the station page and record the displayed grade, price and report time.
- If the report is old, search a second nearby station or verify by phone or on arrival.
- After fueling, submit a correction when the service allows it so later drivers have a fresher reference.
AAA’s daily figure is useful for trend alerts you create yourself: compare today’s local average with yesterday’s, rather than interpreting it as a live station notification. GasGuru’s approximately 30-minute public-data refresh in Spain can support more frequent checks, but its own terms still warn that the pump may differ.
Using each app on a road trip
GasBuddy workflow
- Open the map or station search and set your location or destination area.
- Filter or compare the fuel grade you will buy; do not compare regular with premium or diesel prices.
- Open individual station entries to inspect the reported time, reviews and any rewards or payment conditions.
- Estimate the detour. A lower listed price is worthwhile only when the extra distance does not consume the savings.
- Navigate with your preferred driving app, and recheck the station sign before selecting a pump.
GasBuddy’s rewards and payment features can change the effective cost, but a reward balance or payment offer is separate from the posted cash price. Read the current in-app terms before relying on a discount.
Waze workflow with CarPlay or Android Auto
- Start your route in Waze and open the search control for nearby places.
- Select gas stations, then sort by price when minimizing the fuel bill is the priority or by distance when minimizing the detour matters more.
- Choose the correct fuel type from the station details: Waze displays community-updated prices for regular, midgrade, premium and diesel.
- Review the report age and compare at least two stations if the difference is unusually large.
- Add the chosen station as a stop along the existing route. Waze recalculates the trip with the stop included.
- With a compatible vehicle connection, use the Waze projection on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Set the destination before moving and rely on voice guidance while driving.
The dashboard integration is a safety benefit because it reduces the need to handle a separate phone. It does not make the price data more authoritative; the same community-update caveat applies on the vehicle screen.
AAA benchmark workflow
- Open the AAA Gas Prices website and select the national, state or local view that matches your question.
- Note the publication date, because the service is updated daily rather than continuously.
- Use the average to judge whether your area is comparatively expensive or inexpensive.
- Switch to a station-level search service for exact locations and current pump prices.
This two-stage process avoids a common mistake: driving to a station because its state’s average looks low, without checking the station’s actual street price.

Privacy: which trade-off fits your comfort level?
There is no basis for calling any of these services completely private. Their disclosures describe different kinds of collection and control, so choose according to how much location history, personalization and account data you are willing to exchange for convenience.
GasBuddy’s disclosed sharing
GasBuddy’s Google Play data-safety panel says location, personal information and device IDs may be shared with third parties. The disclosure is the clearest warning in this comparison for readers who want to minimize third-party sharing. Review the app’s current permissions and data-safety panel before installation, and deny background location if the operating system lets you use the app without it.
Waze’s granular controls
Waze provides controls for personalized ads, visibility, navigation history and account deletion. Its privacy help also says you can delete a single drive or your entire navigation history at any time. Depending on your settings, location can be checked outside active navigation, so review background-location and visibility choices rather than assuming that closing the map ends all location use.

AAA’s web collection and volunteered information
AAA says volunteered personal information is not sold or shared with other organizations for commercial purposes. Its website nevertheless automatically collects an IP address, timestamps, pages visited and search criteria for ordinary web operations and analytics. Using the website without creating an account can reduce the amount of information you volunteer, but it does not eliminate routine web-logging data.

The supplied GasGuru terms identify the Spain data source, refresh timing and pump-price warning, but they do not establish a comparable set of privacy controls. Read the current terms and your device permission screen before treating it as a privacy-first option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.CarPlay, Android Auto and hands-free use
Waze is the only service in this comparison with documented support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto dashboard projection. That matters if your priority is choosing a station without mounting or handling a phone. GasBuddy’s supplied listing confirms the dedicated app and its savings features but does not establish either dashboard integration. The GasGuru terms do not establish it either, and AAA’s website is a browser-based average-price reference rather than a documented dashboard app.
If your vehicle lacks dashboard projection, an adjustable car phone mount is an optional hands-free accessory. Mount the phone where it does not block the road view or an airbag, configure the route while parked, and use voice prompts instead of handling the device in motion.
What each app is good at—and where it falls short
| Need | Best fit | Reason | Limitation to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compare many nearby stations in the U.S. or Canada | GasBuddy | Dedicated station search, user prices, reviews, rewards and payment features | Reports can be stale, and the data-safety disclosure indicates sharing with third parties |
| Find a stop without leaving an active route | Waze | Price or distance sorting and one-step route-stop addition | Prices are community-updated, and location use depends on privacy settings |
| Track whether your area’s market is rising or falling | AAA Gas Prices | Daily OPIS averages at national, state and local levels | An average is not a station’s live pump price |
| Check Spanish prices from a public official feed | GasGuru | Spain coverage with approximately 30-minute data refreshes | The terms warn that displayed and pump prices may differ |
| Use a dashboard display | Waze | Documented Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support | Projection does not improve the underlying report freshness |
How to avoid paying more than the app shows
- Match the grade. A regular price cannot be used to estimate premium or diesel.
- Check payment conditions. Cash, membership, rewards and card prices can differ.
- Check the report age. A low number with an old timestamp may be less useful than a slightly higher, recent report.
- Account for the detour. Calculate the extra miles and time before chasing a small per-gallon difference.
- Confirm at the pump. The station sign and pump display control the transaction.
- Report corrections. Accurate community data depends on drivers updating changed prices.
Bottom-line recommendations by driver type
Everyday U.S. or Canadian commuter
Start with GasBuddy when the task is finding the lowest nearby listed price and you want reviews, rewards or payment options in the same app. Keep the report age and third-party-sharing disclosure in view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRoad-trip driver who already navigates with Waze
Use Waze’s station search, price or distance sorting, and route-stop feature. Its CarPlay and Android Auto support makes it the clearest choice for a dashboard-centered workflow.
Driver watching regional fuel trends
Check AAA Gas Prices for the daily national, state or local average, then verify a specific station in a station-level app before making a detour.
Driver in Spain
Use GasGuru for its Spain-focused public-data map and approximately 30-minute refresh description, while treating every displayed number as an estimate until the pump confirms it.
Privacy-sensitive driver
Compare the current permission and privacy screens before signing in. AAA’s stated policy limits commercial sharing of volunteered information but still records routine website analytics; Waze offers deletion and personalization controls but may use location outside active navigation; GasBuddy’s listing explicitly indicates sharing of location, personal information and device IDs with third parties. None should be labeled absolutely private.
