There is no evidence-backed universal winner for Garry’s Mod hosting in 2026. The right choice depends on where your players live, how many will connect, how heavily you use Workshop addons or custom gamemodes, and whether you want a managed control panel or a VPS you administer yourself. Host Havoc emphasizes broad regional coverage and one-click tools; Hexane Networks offers low-cost slot packages with FastDL and SFTP; GPORTAL presents Central Europe slot rentals; and HostGMod sells VPS-style RAM tiers in US and European locations. The figures below are provider-listed offers observed on 13 October 2026, not independent performance tests.

What makes a Garry’s Mod host a good choice?

A GMod server is more than a machine with enough advertised slots. Your community needs a location that keeps latency reasonable, a startup workflow that can load Workshop content and the intended gamemode, and administration tools that let you diagnose crashes or addon conflicts. Backups, file access, console control, database support and DDoS protection can matter more than a headline slot count once a server is established.

The providers in this guide describe their own products. No controlled latency test, load test, purchase, support-response test or uptime comparison was performed, and no independent benchmark in the available evidence establishes a fastest or most reliable host. Treat CPU, storage, uptime and protection statements as claims from the named provider, and verify current details at checkout.

Quick comparison of the reviewed GMod hosts

Provider Pricing model shown Locations shown Notable listed tools
Host Havoc From $10 per month; the page initially displays 20 slots, with billing term and add-ons affecting the total North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific Workshop, addon, gamemode and module installers; MySQL; FTP/file manager; web console; off-site backups; data restores; DDoS mitigation
Hexane Networks 8 slots £2.49; 16 £4.49; 32 £7.49; 64 £14.99; 128 £29.99 per month as displayed, with term, region, storage and upgrades able to change the configurator price London and Virginia examples Workshop sync, FastDL, SFTP, panel controls, scheduler, sub-user permissions, DDoS protection and daily off-site backups
GPORTAL 10 slots for €13.70 per 30 days; 10 slots for €36.99 per 90 days; 40 slots for €31.95 per 30 days Central Europe example NVMe hardware, 24/7 ticket support, DDoS protection and game switching
HostGMod VPS-style plans: $10 monthly for 1 GB RAM/1 vCPU; $20 for 2 GB/2 vCPU; $40 for 4 GB/2 vCPU Los Angeles, Chicago, London and Amsterdam Provider-stated DDoS protection and 99% uptime

These currencies, billing periods and resource models are not directly interchangeable. A monthly slot rental, a 30-day offer and a VPS with allocated RAM place different responsibilities on you. Confirm the exact region, renewal price, included storage, cancellation terms and tax before paying.

Host Havoc: broad locations and an integrated panel

Host Havoc’s Garry’s Mod page displays a starting price of $10 per month, a 20-slot initial selection, and locations across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The final amount can change with the billing term and selected add-ons.

Its listed workflow is aimed at operators who want common tasks in one interface: one-click installers for addons, gamemodes and modules; a Workshop installer; FTP and a file manager; a web console; included MySQL; DDoS mitigation; off-site backups; and data restores. Those features are useful when a DarkRP or TTT community needs database-backed addons, scheduled maintenance or a rollback after a broken update.

Choose this option when regional choice and a managed toolset are more important than finding the lowest displayed slot price. Ask support how Workshop collections are synchronized, whether custom Lua files can be uploaded without restrictions, how often backups run, and whether restores include the database as well as the game files.

Hexane Networks: low entry prices with FastDL and SFTP

Hexane’s displayed monthly packages run from 8 slots at £2.49 to 128 slots at £29.99. The same page shows 16 slots at £4.49, 32 at £7.49 and 64 at £14.99. The configurator can vary by contract term, region, storage and optional upgrades, so use the checkout total rather than the headline package as your budget figure.

The page lists London and Virginia examples, Workshop synchronization, FastDL, SFTP, DDoS protection, panel controls, a scheduler and sub-user permissions. Daily off-site backups are also listed. FastDL can be important for communities distributing large maps or resource packs, while SFTP and sub-user permissions let several administrators work without sharing the primary account.

Hexane states that cancellation is available at any time and that new orders carry a 72-hour money-back guarantee. Verify the guarantee’s exclusions, the point at which the 72-hour window starts, and whether renewals or upgrades receive the same treatment before ordering.

GPORTAL: Central Europe slot offers

GPORTAL’s page displays a 10-slot Central Europe offer at €13.70 for 30 days, a 10-slot offer at €36.99 for 90 days, and a 40-slot offer at €31.95 for 30 days. The offers use different durations and currencies from the other examples, so a direct price-per-slot ranking would be misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page also lists NVMe hardware, 24/7 ticket support, DDoS protection and game switching. Confirm that the selected location is physically suitable for your player group and check what game switching does to existing files, saves and configuration. A lower slot count with the right region can produce a better experience than a larger package far from most players, but the available evidence does not provide latency measurements.

HostGMod: VPS-style RAM and vCPU allocation

HostGMod lists three VPS-style tiers: $10 per month for 1 GB of RAM and 1 vCPU, $20 for 2 GB and 2 vCPUs, and $40 for 4 GB and 2 vCPUs. Locations shown are Los Angeles, Chicago, London and Amsterdam. The provider states that its VPS service includes DDoS protection and 99% uptime; neither figure is an independent measurement.

A VPS gives you a resource allocation rather than a simple slot selection. That can suit an operator who wants operating-system access, custom services or several processes on one server, but it also means more responsibility for updates, firewall rules, monitoring and recovery. Do not assume that 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB maps to a fixed player count: addon memory use, map size, Lua scripts, bots, voice traffic and concurrent player behavior all change the requirement.

How much RAM and how many slots do you need?

No source establishes a universal player-to-memory formula for Garry’s Mod. Slot capacity is workload-dependent, and a package’s advertised maximum is not a promise that every heavily modded configuration will remain stable at that count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the community you actually expect

  • Small private or testing server: begin with a low slot count and the smallest resource allocation that leaves room for the base server, your map and essential addons. Use it to identify memory leaks or script errors before inviting a larger group.
  • Public vanilla or lightly modded server: size for the normal peak, not the average evening. Leave headroom for map changes, log growth and temporary spikes when players join simultaneously.
  • Addon-heavy DarkRP, TTT or role-play server: prioritize predictable CPU and memory headroom, database access and a rollback plan. Large Workshop collections and Lua systems can consume resources unevenly, so test your actual collection.
  • Multiple servers: a VPS can be flexible, but each instance competes for the same RAM and CPU. Separate instances or a larger allocation may be easier to troubleshoot than squeezing several processes into a small tier.

Use slots as a capacity limit, not a performance guarantee

Slots prevent more than the configured number of players from joining; they do not describe tick performance, addon efficiency or disk speed. Start below the provider’s maximum if your scripts are untested, then increase capacity after observing memory use, CPU saturation, tick behavior and crash logs during real peaks.

Questions to ask before selecting a tier

  • Is RAM dedicated to your instance or shared with other customers?
  • Can you increase slots or RAM without rebuilding the server?
  • Are backups and databases included in the quoted price?
  • Can the panel expose console output and startup parameters?
  • What happens when the process exceeds its memory limit?

Choose the server region from your player map

Pick the data-center region closest to the largest concentration of players, then confirm the location in the order flow. The reviewed pages do not offer the same coverage: Host Havoc lists North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific; Hexane shows London and Virginia; GPORTAL shows a Central Europe option; and HostGMod shows Los Angeles, Chicago, London and Amsterdam.

If your community spans continents, choose the region that minimizes latency for the majority or run separate instances when the budget and administration time justify it. Ask whether a move between regions is possible, whether an IP change is unavoidable, and whether backups can be restored into the new location.

Workshop, FastDL and gamemode support

Workshop collections are central to addon-heavy GMod communities. Facepunch’s dedicated-server guide documents the +host_workshop_collection startup parameter. A host panel may provide a form that writes this setting for you, but providers can differ in collection limits, update timing and error reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FastDL is a separate distribution path for files that clients must download. Hexane lists FastDL explicitly; the other provider descriptions in this comparison do not establish the same feature. If your server uses large custom maps, sounds or materials, ask how FastDL storage, bandwidth and cache invalidation work.

DarkRP and TTT are gamemode choices, not guarantees that every addon will work automatically. Confirm that you can set the startup gamemode, upload custom Lua, edit configuration files and restart from the panel. Facepunch’s guide also documents selecting a startup map; use that setting to make a fresh installation boot into the intended environment rather than the default sandbox.

Managed game server or self-administered VPS?

Managed game hosting

  • Usually provides a control panel, web console, file access and one-click or guided installers.
  • Reduces operating-system maintenance and lets moderators receive scoped access where supported.
  • May limit kernel-level changes, custom services or unusual networking requirements.
  • Is easier to hand over to nontechnical administrators, but feature availability varies by host.

VPS hosting

  • Provides more control over the operating system, firewall, scheduled jobs and additional services.
  • Requires you to secure the machine, install updates, configure SteamCMD and plan monitoring.
  • Lets you choose RAM and vCPU tiers directly, as in HostGMod’s 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB plans.
  • Can be economical for several services, but one misconfigured process can affect every game instance.

For a first public server, managed hosting generally removes more operational work. Choose a VPS when you are comfortable with Linux administration and specifically need that control. Neither model removes the need to maintain addons, test updates and keep independent backups.

Technical setup: the official dedicated-server path

Facepunch’s Garry’s Mod Wiki documents installation and updates through SteamCMD with application ID 4020. The guide covers Linux installation, a GSLT, location settings, Workshop collections, the startup gamemode and the map. It also states that macOS dedicated-server files are no longer shipped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the account and region. Decide which players the server serves, choose a provider location, and obtain the access details for the panel or VPS.
  2. Install the dedicated files. Install SteamCMD on the supported operating system and use app ID 4020 to download or update the Garry’s Mod server files.
  3. Create and apply a GSLT. Follow Facepunch’s guide for a Game Server Login Token and configure it where the host’s panel or startup settings require it. Keep the token private and replace it if compromised.
  4. Set the server location and identity. Configure the location and server name so players can recognize the community and administrators can identify the instance in logs.
  5. Load Workshop content. Add +host_workshop_collection with your collection identifier, or use the provider’s Workshop integration if it writes the same startup setting.
  6. Select the gamemode and map. Set the startup gamemode and map documented by Facepunch. For DarkRP or TTT, verify that the corresponding files and dependencies are present before opening the server publicly.
  7. Test privately. Connect with a small group, change maps, join and leave repeatedly, and inspect console output for missing files, Lua errors and Workshop download failures.
  8. Back up before public changes. Capture the configuration, addon list and database before changing gamemodes or updating a large collection. Confirm that you know how to restore it through the host panel or your own VPS process.

Panels differ in how much of this workflow they expose. Before subscribing, ask whether staff can edit startup parameters, access the console, manage files through FTP or SFTP, create scheduled restarts, assign sub-users and restore both files and databases.

Administration features that deserve equal weight with price

File and console access

FTP or SFTP access is essential for custom Lua, configuration files and log retrieval. A web console makes it easier to issue commands without connecting through a separate terminal. Hexane lists SFTP and panel controls; Host Havoc lists FTP/file-manager access and a web console.

Databases

Role-play economies, ranks and statistics often rely on a database. Host Havoc lists included MySQL. If another host does not list a database, ask whether remote or local MySQL is available, whether credentials are isolated per instance, and whether database dumps are included in backups.

Backups and restores

Host Havoc lists off-site backups and data restores; Hexane lists daily off-site backups. Ask how many restore points are retained, whether backups include Workshop configuration and databases, how quickly a restore can be requested, and whether you can download a copy yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and support

All four provider descriptions mention DDoS protection in some form, but the wording and coverage are not standardized. Ask what traffic is mitigated, whether game ports are covered, and what support does during an attack. GPORTAL lists 24/7 ticket support; do not infer an identical response time or channel from another provider’s page.

Billing and cancellation

Compare the renewal period, currency, taxes, setup fees, upgrade charges and refund window. Hexane states anytime cancellation and a 72-hour money-back guarantee for new orders. GPORTAL’s examples use 30-day and 90-day terms, while the Host Havoc and HostGMod figures are monthly displays. These terms can change, so save the checkout summary.

Facepunch rules for community servers and monetization

Facepunch’s Community Server and Hosting Guidelines page was last updated 15 July 2025. It states: “Yes – you are free to run private, unofficial or community servers for our Games.” Operators still have to follow the guidelines and applicable law.

The policy gives examples of permitted monetization, including fees or subscriptions, donations, cosmetic items or enhancements, server currency, advertisements, sponsorships and product placements. Your server must be fairly labeled and must not be presented as official. Do not bypass ownership checks or provide Facepunch DLC to players who have not purchased it. Recheck the live policy before launching a paid feature because policy wording and game systems can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decision framework for the four options

  1. Map your players. Eliminate locations that put most of your community far away. Confirm the physical region in the final order screen.
  2. Classify your administration style. Pick managed controls if you want installers, a web console and minimal operating-system work; pick VPS-style resources if you need root-level flexibility and can maintain Linux.
  3. Estimate workload, then add headroom. Count expected peak players, Workshop size, custom Lua complexity, database use and number of instances. Do not convert those inputs into a supposedly universal RAM number.
  4. Check the workflow before the price. Verify Workshop collection loading, custom gamemode support, FastDL needs, file protocol, console access, scheduled tasks and restart behavior.
  5. Validate recovery. Confirm backup frequency, retention, restore scope and whether you can export files and databases independently.
  6. Read the commercial terms. Compare recurring price, billing duration, cancellation, refund limits, taxes and upgrade costs in the checkout flow.
  7. Run a private trial. Test your exact addon collection and map rotation before advertising a public opening. Monitor logs and resource use during a peak session.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by slots alone: slots do not reveal CPU contention, memory headroom or addon efficiency. Evaluate the complete workload.
  • Ignoring geography: a large package in the wrong region can produce a worse experience than a smaller nearby instance.
  • Assuming Workshop support is identical: verify collection synchronization, update timing, limits and error visibility with the specific host.
  • Skipping restore tests: a backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Request a test restore or perform one before launch.
  • Sharing the main account: use sub-user permissions where offered and keep credentials and GSLTs private.
  • Updating live addons without a rollback: snapshot files and databases before changing a major gamemode, map pack or Lua dependency.
  • Treating provider uptime as a benchmark: a listed percentage is a provider statement, not a comparative measurement. Keep your own incident log.
  • Forgetting policy boundaries: label the server as unofficial, respect ownership checks and review the current Facepunch guidelines before monetizing.

Bottom line: match the host to the community

Choose Host Havoc if broad regional coverage, integrated installers, MySQL, file tools and listed restore options fit your managed-server workflow. Choose Hexane Networks if you want low displayed slot prices plus Workshop sync, FastDL, SFTP and daily off-site backups, while checking the 72-hour guarantee and configurator total. Consider GPORTAL when its Central Europe offers, NVMe listing, ticket support and game switching match your region and billing preference. Choose HostGMod when VPS-style RAM and vCPU allocations, rather than a fixed slot package, are the priority and you can handle server administration.

None of these choices is proven fastest or most reliable by the available evidence. The defensible 2026 decision is the one that places the server near your players, leaves enough headroom for your actual addons, exposes the administration and recovery tools you will use, and remains acceptable after renewal and cancellation terms are included.
