For most gaming PCs, start with a 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD that your motherboard supports. It offers ample room for Windows and a modern game library without paying for bandwidth that may not improve frame rates. A PCIe 5.0 model is a premium choice for a compatible new platform or very large file transfers, not a guaranteed gaming upgrade. Current editorial picks differ: PC Gamer’s guide updated January 15, 2026, names the WD_BLACK SN7100 its best overall gaming SSD, while Tom’s Hardware currently selects the Samsung 990 Pro as its overall and gaming pick. Those are publication-specific recommendations, not a single uncontested market ranking.
What is the best SSD for gaming?
The best choice depends on your motherboard, library size, cooling and budget. For a new or upgraded mainstream gaming PC, a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive is the practical default. It is fast enough for current game loading and asset streaming, widely supported by recent platforms and usually easier to cool than the fastest PCIe 5.0 hardware.
Tom’s Hardware rates the Samsung 990 Pro at up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read and 6,900 MB/s sequential write, making it a strong PCIe 4.0 candidate for a system with an M.2 NVMe slot. PC Gamer’s guide, last updated January 15, 2026, instead names the WD_BLACK SN7100 its best overall gaming SSD; SanDisk lists that drive at up to 7,250 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, with capacities up to 4TB. These figures are manufacturer or publication specifications, not a promise that one drive will load every game faster than another.
Choose the model that fits your platform and capacity requirement first. Then compare the exact SKU’s endurance rating, warranty, heatsink configuration and current price per terabyte. Retail prices and stock change too quickly to treat any one listing as permanent.

What should you check before buying an internal gaming SSD?
1. Match the interface to the motherboard
Confirm that the board has an M.2 slot wired for NVMe PCIe storage. M.2 describes the physical card shape; PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 describes the link generation. A drive can physically fit while operating at a lower negotiated speed, or a slot can support SATA M.2 but not NVMe. The motherboard manual is the authority for each slot.
Check the CPU and chipset lane layout as well. Some boards share lanes between an M.2 slot and a SATA port, expansion slot or secondary M.2 connector. Installing a drive in the shared slot can disable another connector or reduce available lanes. The manual normally lists those conditions in the storage or block-diagram section.
2. Verify PCIe generation and backward compatibility
A PCIe 5.0 SSD installed in a PCIe 4.0 system is generally usable but is capped by the host link. SanDisk’s technical material explicitly notes that a Gen 5 drive in a Gen 4 system runs at Gen 4 speed. The reverse is also true: a Gen 4 drive in a Gen 5 slot remains a Gen 4 device. Actual speed depends on the drive, slot, CPU platform and motherboard implementation, so check all four specifications.

3. Check physical size and heatsink clearance
Most desktop gaming drives use the 2280 M.2 length, but do not assume every slot accepts it. Confirm the supported width and length, screw or latch position and whether the slot is under a graphics card. Measure clearance around the connector, motherboard heatsink, graphics-card backplate and CPU cooler.
Many boards include an M.2 cover with a thermal pad. Remove any protective film from the pad, align the drive, secure it and reinstall the cover without bending the module. If the board has no suitable cover, use a drive heatsink designed for that slot. Do not stack a separate heatsink on top of an integrated one unless the board and drive manufacturer explicitly allow it; excessive pressure can damage the module or prevent proper contact.
4. Compare the exact SKU’s warranty and endurance
Capacity, heatsink inclusion and regional packaging can change the warranty or endurance specification. Record the full model number before comparing listings. A higher sequential-speed label does not compensate for a shorter warranty or an endurance rating that does not suit frequent installs, captures and file transfers. Retain the invoice and register the drive if the manufacturer requires registration for support.
What is a good size SSD drive for gaming PCs?
Capacity should reflect the games you actually keep installed, not only the size of today’s operating-system image.
- 1TB: workable for a compact library, but leave room for Windows, applications, updates and free-space overhead. A few large releases can consume most of it.
- 2TB: Tom’s Hardware describes this as a useful capacity sweet spot. Its 2026 guide notes that a high-end AAA game can exceed 100GB and that Windows 11 may require 60GB, before launchers, updates and personal files are counted.
- 4TB: sensible for a large installed library, mod collections, multiple operating systems or a build intended to last several upgrade cycles. The SN7100 is listed up to 4TB, the SN8100 up to 4TB and the SN850X up to 8TB.
- 8TB: available in some PCIe 4.0 product lines, including the SN850X listing, but compare the price per terabyte and the exact endurance and warranty before choosing it over two smaller drives.
Leave free space for updates and sustained write performance. Game launchers often need temporary room to unpack patches; a nearly full drive can turn a routine update into a storage-management task. If your motherboard has only one suitable slot, buying the capacity you will need over the life of the system can be cheaper and simpler than replacing a full boot drive later.

Does SSD speed matter for gaming?
Yes, but not in the same way that a graphics-card or CPU upgrade affects frame rate. An SSD can shorten installation, launch and loading waits and can help a game stream assets without relying on a slow hard drive. The visible result depends on the title’s engine, CPU, decompression path, storage queue and software support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sequential read and write numbers describe large, orderly transfers. Game loading often involves many smaller and mixed operations, so independent random-I/O and game-load tests are more informative than a single headline number. Compare tests performed with similar game versions and platforms; a result from one title is not a universal ranking.
MSI’s September 2026 technical explainer cautions that a PCIe generation is not an automatic frames-per-second upgrade. It also states: “DirectStorage does not require a PCIe 5.0 SSD, and a suitable PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD can also support it.” That means a well-chosen Gen 4 drive is not obsolete merely because a newer interface exists.
Do I need a PCIe 5.0 SSD?
Usually, no. Choose Gen 5 when your motherboard and CPU provide a Gen 5 M.2 slot, you regularly move very large files, or you want premium throughput and accept the additional cost and cooling requirements. For a gaming-focused Gen 4 platform, a quality PCIe 4.0 drive normally offers the simpler value proposition.
The SN8100 illustrates the Gen 5 ceiling: SanDisk lists up to 14,900 MB/s sequential reads and up to 14,000 MB/s writes for specified 2–4TB models, with 7W average power. Those are rated maxima under the manufacturer’s conditions. They do not predict a matching reduction in game load times, and the drive cannot reach its rated interface speed in a Gen 4 slot.

How much difference does Gen 5 make?
Gen 5 primarily increases link bandwidth. Whether that matters in a game depends on whether the game and platform can keep the drive busy with enough useful work. A title limited by CPU simulation, shader compilation, decompression or network matchmaking will not become proportionally faster because the SSD has a larger sequential number.
Use Gen 5’s extra bandwidth for tasks that can actually consume it: large project files, repeated transfers between fast storage devices, content creation caches or development workloads. For ordinary game launches, compare independent measurements rather than assuming the interface label determines the result. Treat the 77% SN8100-versus-SN850X figure as SanDisk’s synthetic 3DMark Storage result, not a game benchmark.
How to install and configure a gaming NVMe SSD
- Read the motherboard manual. Identify the M.2 slot that supports NVMe, its maximum PCIe generation, supported lengths and any lane-sharing notes. Confirm that the CPU platform exposes the required lanes.
- Choose the physical location. Prefer the primary slot recommended by the board maker when it has a heatsink and direct CPU-connected lanes. Check that the graphics card or another expansion card will not block access.
- Prepare the system. Shut down completely, switch off the power supply, unplug the cable and discharge residual power according to the board manual. Ground yourself before handling the drive.
- Install the module. Remove the slot cover, take off the thermal-pad film, insert the SSD at the connector’s angle and press it flat. Secure it with the supplied screw or latch; do not overtighten.
- Reinstall cooling hardware. Ensure the thermal pad contacts the controller and memory packages as intended. Replace the motherboard cover or fit a compatible heatsink without trapping cables or touching adjacent components.
- Confirm detection in firmware. Enter UEFI setup, usually by pressing the board’s Delete or F2 key during startup, and verify that the model appears under NVMe or storage information. If it is missing, power down and recheck seating, slot support and lane-sharing settings.
- Initialize the drive in Windows. In Windows 11, open Disk Management, initialize an unallocated disk with the partition style appropriate for your system, create a volume and format it. If it will host Windows, install or clone the operating system using a tool that preserves the required boot partitions, then select it as the boot device in UEFI.
- Update firmware and drivers. Use the SSD maker’s support utility and your motherboard’s support page. Apply updates only after confirming the exact model and maintaining a backup of important data.
- Validate temperatures and performance. Check the drive’s health and temperature while copying a large file or installing a game. If performance drops sharply after a short burst, investigate heatsink contact, airflow and thermal throttling rather than assuming the benchmark number was wrong.
Cooling, airflow and throttling
Fast NVMe controllers produce heat, especially during sustained writes. Gaming usually creates shorter bursts than a long video export, but installing or patching several large games can keep the drive busy. A motherboard heatsink with a correctly placed thermal pad is often sufficient for Gen 4. High-end Gen 5 models deserve particular attention because their controller power draw and rated throughput are higher.
- Use the board’s thermal cover when it fits the slot and the drive’s components.
- Keep a front-to-back case airflow path; do not bury the M.2 area under cable bundles.
- Monitor the controller temperature during a sustained transfer, not only at idle.
- If the drive throttles, verify pad contact and heatsink pressure before adding a second cooler.
A heatsink can also create compatibility problems. Some graphics cards, CPU coolers and motherboard covers occupy the same space. Check the assembled dimensions rather than relying on a product photograph.
How to compare value when prices change
Calculate the current price per usable terabyte for the exact capacity and heatsink version. Then weigh the features that remain relevant after a sale ends:
Best Value
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 12" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
- Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy laptop support with the integrated device ledge.
- Cool Comfort: Enjoy a stable surface with our lap desk's dual bolster cushion, designed for comfort and airflow, keeping your lap cool during extended use.
- Durable Surface: Work with confidence on our lap desk's solid surface, featuring a blush pink color, ensuring optimal air circulation to prevent your laptop from overheating.
- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Platform fit: a less expensive Gen 5 drive is poor value if your board negotiates only Gen 4.
- Capacity: paying a little more for 2TB can avoid buying a second drive when a 1TB model fills with a few large games.
- Endurance and warranty: compare the manufacturer’s figures for the precise SKU, not a family name.
- Thermals: include the cost and space for a compatible heatsink if one is not supplied.
- Independent testing: look for random-I/O, consistency and real game-load measurements in addition to sequential ratings.
Prices, inventory and editorial rankings are volatile. The PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware selections cited here were current to their respective 2026 updates; they should be treated as dated guidance rather than a permanent league table.
Common buying and installation mistakes
Buying by the M.2 label alone
M.2 is a form factor, not proof of NVMe support or a particular PCIe generation. Read the slot description in the motherboard manual.
Assuming a Gen 5 label guarantees faster games
Bandwidth and frame rate are different measurements. Confirm that your workload and platform can use the extra throughput before paying the premium.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring shared lanes
A secondary M.2 slot can disable a SATA port or share bandwidth with an expansion slot. Check the board diagram before installing several drives.
Leaving the thermal-pad film in place
The protective film prevents contact between the pad and heatsink. Remove it before closing the cover, while keeping the pad itself in position.
Comparing capacities without the full model number
Different capacities can have different controllers, NAND layouts, endurance ratings or rated speeds. Compare the exact SKU and region.
Filling the drive completely
Reserve working space for game patches, temporary files and normal maintenance. Move less-played games to secondary storage instead of operating at the edge of capacity.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Start with the board: identify the fastest supported M.2 NVMe slot and its physical clearance.
- Set capacity: choose 1TB for a small library, 2TB for the broadest balance, or 4TB and above for a large installed collection.
- Select the generation: use PCIe 4.0 for mainstream gaming value; select PCIe 5.0 only when the platform and workload justify it.
- Shortlist exact models: compare the Samsung 990 Pro, WD_BLACK SN7100 or WD_BLACK SN850X for Gen 4 systems; consider the WD_BLACK SN8100 for a cooled, compatible Gen 5 build.
- Check ownership costs: compare price per terabyte, warranty, endurance, heatsink inclusion and current stock.
- Install and verify: follow the board manual, confirm UEFI detection, update firmware and monitor temperature during a sustained transfer.
