Best overall for most players: Audeze Maxwell. It is the premium wireless choice when precise imaging, separation in crowded firefights, and a complete headset matter most. SoundGuys links its 90 mm planar magnetic drivers to strong separation and precise spatial width, while RTINGS names it the best gaming headset in its 2026 roundup.
Choose the Sony INZONE H6 Air if you prefer a lightweight, open-back wired headset and play in a quiet room. Choose the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 Wireless if Bluetooth plus low-latency wireless flexibility is more useful than a detail-first tuning. Choose the Sennheiser HD 560S only if you are willing to add a separate microphone.
No headset guarantees earlier detection. Footstep audibility changes with the game’s mix, your platform’s audio processing, fit and ear seal, room noise, and your own hearing. The useful target is accurate imaging and clean separation at low latency—not the biggest bass response or a “7.1” label.

What actually makes footsteps easier to locate
Imaging tells you where a sound is
Imaging is the headset’s ability to place a sound at a believable left-right, front-back, and sometimes vertical position. In a raid, that distinction matters more than a dramatic low-end rumble. A headset can sound exciting while smearing two nearby cues together; accurate imaging lets you decide whether a step is on the next floor, around a doorway, or behind you.
Imaging is not the same as a wide soundstage. A broad presentation can make space feel larger, but width without precise placement is not useful if several cues occupy the same apparent location. When you compare products, look for consistent positional accuracy in reviews rather than a promise based solely on virtual-surround branding.
Separation keeps a footstep from disappearing
Separation describes how well the headset keeps simultaneous sounds distinct. Extraction mixes can contain automatic fire, explosions, voice lines, environmental noise, and a quiet step at the same time. The Audeze Maxwell is the strongest documented example in this group: SoundGuys associates its 90 mm planar magnetic drivers with strong separation and precise spatial width. TechRadar’s assessment of the Sony INZONE H6 Air similarly reports that enemy footsteps remained easy to track amid gunfire and explosions.
Do not infer that either result guarantees the same experience in every game. Developers set different footstep levels and frequencies, and patches can alter a mix. Your own volume, equalizer, ear seal, and hearing profile also change what survives a busy scene.
Bass quantity is not a locating system
Large bass output can make explosions and shots feel powerful, but extra low-end energy can mask the quieter transients that signal a step. For competitive listening, prioritize a clean midrange and treble presentation with controlled bass over a headset marketed mainly for impact. This does not mean footsteps should sound thin; it means impact should not overwhelm the information you need to place a sound.
“7.1” is not proof of better positioning
Virtual surround can help some players and games, but the label alone says nothing about imaging quality. A game’s own binaural or spatial mode, the operating system’s processing, and a headset app can all affect the final signal. Test one processing path at a time so you know which setting is helping rather than stacking several surround effects and creating echoes or blurred placement.
Open-back versus closed-back for raids
Why open-back can sound spacious
Open-back ear cups allow air and sound to pass through the rear of the driver. This often produces a more open presentation and can make front-back changes feel less confined. The Sony INZONE H6 Air is the cited open-back gaming choice, and the Sennheiser HD 560S is a wired open-back headphone described as having a wide soundstage and neutral tuning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open-back construction is not automatically more accurate. Its benefit is most apparent when your room is quiet and you are comfortable hearing some of your surroundings. It also lets your game audio leak outward and lets room noise leak inward.
When closed-back is safer
A closed-back headset provides more passive isolation and keeps your raid audio from disturbing nearby people. That is valuable beside a television, in a shared room, or near a loud PC fan. Isolation can also make low-level cues easier to hear because outside noise is reduced. The trade-off is a more enclosed presentation and, depending on the design, a warmer sound.

Wired, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth latency
Wired connections
A wired connection removes a wireless link from the signal path and is the simplest way to avoid wireless pairing or battery problems. The Sony INZONE H6 Air and Sennheiser HD 560S are the wired choices in this guide. You still need to check your platform’s jack, controller output, USB adapter, and microphone routing.

Low-latency wireless
A 2.4 GHz gaming dongle is designed for lower-latency game audio than ordinary Bluetooth. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 Wireless is the flexible pick because RTINGS highlights both Bluetooth and the ability to mix phone audio with game audio through its dongle. That lets you keep a call or music source available while using the low-latency game path.
Wireless latency matters because a delayed sound can make a visual reaction and an audio cue feel out of sync. The practical question is not whether wireless is categorically bad; it is whether the headset’s gaming mode is low latency, whether the dongle is connected correctly, and whether another Bluetooth mode has been selected accidentally.
Bluetooth’s proper role
Bluetooth is useful for phones and general listening, but do not assume every Bluetooth codec is suitable for timing-sensitive play. If a headset offers a separate gaming dongle, use that path for raids and reserve Bluetooth for the device it is intended to serve. Pairing behavior, codec support, and platform restrictions vary, so verify the current manual for your console, PC, or mobile device.
Headset-by-headset guidance
Audeze Maxwell: premium wireless detail
Start here if you want one complete wireless headset and are prepared to pay for a premium model. RTINGS names the Maxwell its best gaming headset in the 2026 roundup. SoundGuys attributes strong separation and precise spatial width to its 90 mm planar magnetic drivers, properties that fit the demands of busy extraction mixes.
Its sensible use case is a player who values clean positional information without adding a separate headphone amplifier, microphone, and wireless adapter. Before ordering, confirm the platform-specific version and current firmware support. Stock, pricing, and included accessories can change, and the cited reviews do not establish a single price or a battery-life figure that applies to every edition.
Do not read “best overall” as “best for every listener.” A lighter open-back design may be more comfortable for you, and a different fit can create a better seal or less pressure over a long raid. Treat the Maxwell as the detail-first wireless starting point, then check weight, clamp, pad material, and your room conditions.
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 Wireless: the flexible wireless option
Pick this model when your priority is flexibility. RTINGS specifically highlights Bluetooth support and simultaneous phone-and-game audio mixing through its dongle. That is useful for players who need a call, notification, or second device while remaining in a raid.

These eye-catching lights give your setup a gamer-ready look while maintaining focus on performance. (*Note: The USB connector is for LED lighting only)
The cited evidence supports its connectivity advantage, not a blanket claim that it images better than every competitor. Set the dongle as the game output, select the headset microphone as the input when required, and keep the phone connection at a level that cannot mask quiet cues. If you hear stutter, test the dongle’s placement and temporarily disable other wireless sources before blaming the game’s mix.
Sony INZONE H6 Air: open-back wired tracking
This is the choice for a quiet room, a lighter open-back experience, and a wired signal. RTINGS calls it the best open-back gaming headset tested. TechRadar reports that enemy footsteps stayed easy to track even with gunfire and explosions, which is directly relevant to extraction fights.
Its open-back design changes the buying decision. Sound escapes the cups, and household noise enters, so a roommate, microphone, or nearby television can reduce the practical advantage of its spacious presentation. If you play late at night near other people or beside a loud environment, a more isolating design is safer.
Because it is wired, confirm that your platform exposes the expected headphone and microphone paths. If your controller’s jack is noisy or uncomfortable, an appropriate USB audio adapter may be more useful than changing equalizer settings.
Sennheiser HD 560S: headphone-first, microphone-second
The HD 560S is a wired open-back headphone with neutral tuning and a wide soundstage in the cited guide. It can suit a player who already owns a microphone or prefers to choose a boom mic separately.
It is not a complete squad-chat headset: there is no built-in microphone. Budget for a separate microphone, its stand or mount, and any adapter your platform needs. That extra equipment changes total cost, desk space, and setup time. Open-back leakage also means nearby people can hear your game and your microphone may capture room sound.
Choose by room, platform, and communication needs
Quiet private room
Open-back models become viable here. The Sony INZONE H6 Air is the clearest match when you want a complete wired gaming headset; the HD 560S is appropriate when you already have a separate microphone. Keep the room quiet enough that outside sound does not compete with footsteps.
Noisy or shared room
Favor isolation and a complete microphone solution. A wireless headset can reduce cable clutter, but verify that its gaming link is the low-latency path. If a product’s cup construction or platform behavior is not clear for your exact edition, check the manufacturer specification before purchase rather than assuming a review’s configuration applies to you.
Multiple devices and phone calls
The Arctis Nova 7 Wireless is the documented fit because its dongle can carry game audio while Bluetooth handles a phone connection. Keep non-game audio low enough that it does not cover quiet environmental cues.

Separate microphone already owned
The HD 560S becomes a practical option if you accept a cable and open-back leakage. A separate microphone also gives you control over placement and voice quality, but it adds another device to configure and troubleshoot.

- Fit the cups evenly. Center each driver over your ear, adjust the headband until the clamp is stable, and keep hair or glasses from creating an inconsistent seal. A small leak can change bass balance and perceived positioning.
- Select one audio path. On PC, choose the headset or DAC output explicitly. On console, confirm the controller, USB, or wireless receiver is the active device. Avoid leaving a monitor’s speakers enabled, which can create a delayed duplicate signal.
- Use the game’s intended spatial mode first. Start with the game’s headphone or binaural mode if it offers one. Disable extra operating-system and headset-app surround effects while you establish a baseline.
- Set a safe, repeatable volume. Raise volume only until quiet cues are audible. Excessive loudness does not create better imaging and can make fatigue arrive sooner.
- Change EQ one band at a time. If explosions dominate, reduce the offending low-end region slightly rather than boosting every treble control. Make a change, replay the same scene, and keep it only if placement becomes clearer without harshness.
- Check the microphone separately. Confirm the correct input, mute state, sidetone level, and chat balance. On the HD 560S, connect and test the separate microphone before joining a squad.
- Test in a repeatable scene. Use a training area or a familiar route with controlled movement. Listen for left-right transitions, a step crossing behind you, and changes between floors. Then test during gunfire; a setting that sounds impressive in silence may fail in a crowded mix.
Troubleshooting directional-audio problems
Footsteps sound wide but cannot be placed
Turn off one layer of virtual surround and retest the game’s native headphone mode. Excess processing can make the presentation larger while reducing front-back precision. Recheck cup position and the left-right channel test before changing hardware.
Everything sounds boomy
Lower bass gradually and compare the same scene. Do not compensate by raising overall volume. If the headset seal changes when you move, adjust the headband and glasses position first; fit can be the real cause.
Wireless audio feels late or cuts out
Confirm that the 2.4 GHz dongle, not a Bluetooth-only mode, is selected for game audio. Move the receiver to a clear USB position, reduce nearby wireless congestion, and update firmware only through the current official process for that model. If the problem persists, test a wired connection where available to separate game, platform, and wireless causes.

Reduce competing noise or switch to an isolating design. Increasing volume to defeat a television or conversation raises hearing risk and does not restore the lost separation.
Squad members hear the game
Open-back leakage is expected. Lower the headset level, move the microphone closer to your mouth and away from the ear cups, or use a closed-back alternative when shared-room privacy matters.
Chat works but game audio does not
Check the platform’s output device and the game’s selected device independently. A microphone can be assigned correctly while the game remains routed to a monitor or controller speaker. Reconnect the receiver or cable only after confirming those software selections.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
RTINGS says its 2026 recommendations draw on testing more than 910 headphones; the page also states that 926 headphones were bought and tested. Its editorial introduction captures the central distinction: “Whether you like to get immersed in single-player titles or need to hear every enemy’s footsteps in your favorite tactical shooter, choosing the best headphones for gaming isn’t the same as simply choosing the best headphones.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat testing scale is useful context, but it is not a controlled extraction-shooter laboratory comparison. No cited source proves that one of these models gives every player an earlier warning, a fixed competitive advantage, or identical results across Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown, Gray Zone Warfare, and other games. Prices, availability, firmware, platform support, and included accessories also require a current check when you buy.
Your final choice should therefore combine the documented strengths with your conditions: imaging and separation for the mix, latency for timing, isolation for the room, comfort for long raids, and a microphone plan for squad communication. If those constraints point in different directions, solve the room and fit problem before chasing a new surround mode.
