Alan Wake 2 is the best first choice if you want oppressive, dark-horror atmosphere with modern path-traced lighting. Cyberpunk 2077 is the strongest technical showcase of path tracing, although its neon science-fiction setting is very different from a gothic action RPG. Black Myth: Wukong is a worthwhile dark-fantasy possibility, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is mainly a technical extra rather than a close mood match.
These are two separate filters: path-tracing support is a verifiable graphics feature, while “Bloodborne-like” atmosphere is an editorial judgment about dread, darkness, architecture, combat pressure and exploration. The games below meet the technical filter to different degrees; the atmosphere ratings are subjective guidance, not measurements.
What counts as a Bloodborne-like atmosphere?
Bloodborne’s identity comes from more than low light. Its mood combines decaying architecture, ambiguous horror, isolation, violent close-range combat, oppressive sound design and exploration that continually reveals something more disturbing. Path tracing can improve the way a game communicates those qualities by making indirect light, bounced color, occlusion and shadow transitions more coherent, but it cannot turn a futuristic city or an archaeological adventure into a gothic action RPG.
For this guide, “Bloodborne-like” means a game may offer several of the following: oppressive or unsettling horror, dark-fantasy imagery, dangerous exploration, strong environmental storytelling and a sense that light itself is part of the threat. Combat similarity is considered separately because none of these four games is a direct mechanical replacement for Bloodborne.

1. Alan Wake 2: the best dark-horror choice
Why it fits the mood
Alan Wake 2 is the clearest recommendation when atmosphere matters more than combat resemblance. Its story follows two protagonists connected by a dark narrative, and its environments are built around uncertainty, isolation and the contrast between visible and hidden spaces. You investigate locations, interpret clues and survive encounters rather than simply advancing through a chain of arena fights. That structure gives lighting a narrative job: a dim room, a distant lamp or a patch of unnatural shadow can change how safe a route feels.
This is still a survival-horror and investigation game, not a gothic Soulslike. If what you want is Bloodborne’s exact weapon variety, stamina management and boss design, Alan Wake 2 will not supply it. If what you want is dread, oppressive ambience and a world that makes darkness feel active, it is the strongest fit in this shortlist.
What its path tracing changes
Remedy’s official Alan Wake 2 FAQ says the game supports full ray tracing/path tracing on DirectX 12 GPUs with hardware-accelerated DXR. The studio recommends GeForce RTX 40 series hardware and DLSS 3.5 because the feature is GPU intensive, while noting that the feature is available on hardware-accelerated ray-tracing GPUs with different quality settings.
A PC update published on January 30, 2025 added an explicit path-traced indirect-lighting setting alongside other ray-tracing improvements. The update is documented in Remedy’s DLSS 4 and ray-tracing announcement. Indirect lighting is particularly relevant to horror: light bouncing from a colored wall, floor or prop can make a scene feel materially connected instead of illuminated by isolated effect lights.
Platforms and console limits
The FAQ lists PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, with the PC digital release distributed through the Epic Games Store. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game offers Performance and Quality modes. The same FAQ says Xbox Series S has no Performance mode. Console modes are not a promise of the PC’s full path-tracing feature; the path-tracing discussion in Remedy’s documentation concerns compatible PC hardware.
Who should choose it
- Choose Alan Wake 2 if horror atmosphere, investigation and environmental tension are your priorities.
- Choose it over Cyberpunk 2077 if “dark and unsettling” matters more than a large open world or technical spectacle.
- Do not choose it expecting Bloodborne’s melee systems or a Soulslike progression loop.
2. Cyberpunk 2077: the strongest documented path-tracing showcase
Why it belongs on the list
Cyberpunk 2077 is not a gothic action RPG. It is a futuristic, open-world first-person RPG built around neon streets, megastructures, firearms, cybernetic abilities and dense urban storytelling. Its connection to Bloodborne is therefore thematic rather than literal: both can be bleak, violent worlds where architecture, lighting and social decay create a feeling of danger.

If your main reason for asking about Bloodborne-like games is to see what path tracing can do, Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest technical demonstration here. Its Ray Tracing: Overdrive preset uses path-traced rendering across the scene rather than relying only on selected ray-traced effects.
Overdrive requirements and what the numbers mean
CD PROJEKT RED’s Overdrive support guidance describes the mode as GPU intensive, disabled by default, and recommends an RTX 40 Series card from the RTX 4070 Ti upward. The same guidance includes an RTX 3090 recommendation for 1080p at 30 frames per second. Those are the studio’s guidance points, not an independent benchmark.
The studio’s current Cyberpunk 2077 system-requirements page lists an Overdrive target of 2160p at 60 frames per second with an RTX 4080, 16 GB of VRAM and 24 GB of system RAM. CD PROJEKT RED measured that target with DLSS Frame Generation enabled. It should therefore be read as a configured target, not a guarantee of native 4K/60 rendering on every RTX 4080 system.
For path-traced Photo Mode, the Overdrive article lists minimum VRAM figures of 8 GB at 1080p, 10 GB at 1440p and 12 GB at 2160p. These figures apply to taking path-traced photos and are not equivalent to a real-time gameplay frame-rate guarantee.
What path tracing contributes visually
Nighttime streets are the obvious showcase: neon signs can influence nearby surfaces, interiors can inherit color from windows and signage, and shadow transitions can feel less like separate effects layered onto geometry. The benefit is most visible when you compare a scene with complex mixed lighting rather than a uniformly bright outdoor area.
Overdrive also exposes the practical trade-off. The preset can transform reflections, bounced light and shadow behavior, but the extra work is substantial. Use DLSS and, where appropriate, Frame Generation as reconstruction and display technologies that help reach a target; do not describe them as making path tracing free or as equivalent to native rendering.
Who should choose it
- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want the most thoroughly documented path-tracing showcase and a large RPG to explore.
- Choose it if dystopian urban decay can satisfy your appetite for oppressive worlds even without gothic castles or cosmic horror.
- Skip it if your priority is strictly medieval-gothic imagery or Soulslike melee combat.
3. Black Myth: Wukong: a dark-fantasy possibility
What is established
NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX game catalog identifies Black Myth: Wukong as an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and lists path tracing support. That makes it a legitimate option for players who want action combat, mythic environments and advanced lighting in the same package.
Rank #3
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4 OC mode: 2640MHz/Default mode: 2610MHz (Boost Clock)
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability

- 3.125-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
The Bloodborne comparison is more tentative here. Chinese mythological imagery, ruined environments and threatening creatures can appeal to the same player who enjoys dark fantasy, but the cited technical listing does not establish that the game reproduces Bloodborne’s visual language or emotional tone. Treat it as a taste-based recommendation, not a factual equivalence.

In a dark-fantasy action RPG, bounced light can help separate torchlit interiors, moonlit exteriors, mist and reflective surfaces without making every area look uniformly bright. The quality of that effect depends on the game’s art direction, scene composition and performance settings. The available catalog entry confirms the feature but does not provide a complete GPU-performance matrix, so consult the current PC requirements and test the game’s own presets on your hardware.
Who should choose it
- Choose Black Myth: Wukong if you want action-RPG combat and mythological dark fantasy more than explicit horror.
- Choose it as a visually ambitious alternative when Alan Wake 2 is too investigative and Cyberpunk 2077 is too futuristic.
- Keep expectations flexible: the atmosphere match is subjective and not supported by a formal comparison.
4. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: a technical extra, not a close mood match
What the PC support page says
Bethesda’s support guidance for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle documents a PC path-tracing option and gives vendor-specific access thresholds. It states that an Intel GPU needs 12 GB of VRAM and ray-tracing support, while an AMD GPU needs 16 GB of VRAM and ray-tracing support. These are not universal minimum requirements for every graphics card or every setting; they are the thresholds stated on that support page.
The same instructions say DLSS must be enabled for the path-tracing options to appear. If the setting is missing, first confirm that you are using the PC version, your GPU supports hardware ray tracing, and DLSS is active in the graphics settings. Bethesda’s cited page does not provide a complete current requirements table for every vendor and model.
How it fits the request
This is an adventure game centered on exploration, puzzles, stealth and action. Its subject matter and tone are not an obvious Bloodborne match, and the cited support material does not claim otherwise. Include it if your priority is trying another PC game with a documented path-tracing mode; do not buy it specifically for gothic-horror atmosphere.
Path tracing hardware: what PC players actually need
Path tracing is a rendering technique, not a single performance level. The same mode can be playable at different resolutions and reconstruction settings, and a requirement listed for Photo Mode is not interchangeable with a gameplay target. The following figures are the most specific publisher guidance available for these games:
| Game or feature | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive gameplay target | 2160p/60 with RTX 4080, 16 GB VRAM and 24 GB RAM | CD PROJEKT RED measured the target with DLSS Frame Generation enabled; it is not a native 60-fps guarantee |
| Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive recommendation | RTX 40 Series, RTX 4070 Ti and up | Studio recommendation for the GPU-intensive mode |
| Cyberpunk path-traced Photo Mode | 8 GB VRAM at 1080p; 10 GB at 1440p; 12 GB at 2160p | Photo Mode minimums, not real-time gameplay performance claims |
| Alan Wake 2 full path tracing | Hardware-accelerated DXR GPU; RTX 40 series and DLSS 3.5 recommended | Remedy’s guidance; not a comparative benchmark |
| Indiana Jones path tracing | Intel GPU with 12 GB VRAM or AMD GPU with 16 GB VRAM, both with ray-tracing support | Bethesda’s vendor-specific access guidance; not a universal requirements matrix |
Practical settings strategy
- Start with the game’s recommended preset for your GPU, then enable path tracing separately.
- Set a realistic resolution and frame-rate target before increasing ray-tracing quality. A stable 1440p experience is usually more useful than an unstable 4K screenshot.
- Use the game’s supported upscaling mode when the developer recommends it. In Cyberpunk 2077, remember that the published Overdrive target used DLSS Frame Generation.
- Watch VRAM use, not only the average frame-rate counter. Exceeding available VRAM can cause stutter even when the average looks acceptable.
- Update the game and graphics driver before judging performance. Path-tracing implementations change with patches, and the cited platform and requirements pages should be checked for current revisions.
How to enable or find path tracing
Alan Wake 2 on PC
Use the PC graphics settings and look for the full ray-tracing/path-tracing controls documented by Remedy. The 2025 update added a path-traced indirect-lighting setting. If the options are unavailable, confirm that the game is running through DirectX 12 on a GPU with hardware-accelerated DXR support, then lower quality settings or enable the supported upscaling option.

Cyberpunk 2077 on PC
Open the graphics settings and select the Ray Tracing: Overdrive preset or its equivalent path-tracing control. Overdrive is off by default. If performance is poor, reduce output resolution or reconstruction quality before concluding that the feature is unusable; the studio’s own 2160p/60 figure assumes DLSS Frame Generation.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PC
Enable DLSS in the graphics settings first. Bethesda says this exposes the path-tracing options. If they remain hidden, check the GPU vendor, VRAM capacity and hardware ray-tracing support against the vendor-specific thresholds above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBlack Myth: Wukong
Use the current PC version’s graphics menu and verify that path tracing is listed for your hardware. NVIDIA’s catalog confirms support, but the cited material does not specify a universal menu path or performance target.
Choosing by priority
You want the closest emotional mood
Start with Alan Wake 2. It is the only recommendation here whose central design is explicitly built around horror, darkness and investigation. Its combat differs from Bloodborne, but its atmosphere is the least strained comparison.
You want to demonstrate path tracing to friends
Choose Cyberpunk 2077. Its Overdrive mode is explicitly path traced, technically demanding and visually easy to demonstrate in scenes combining neon, wet streets, interiors and reflective surfaces.
You want dark fantasy and action combat
Try Black Myth: Wukong, while treating the Bloodborne resemblance as personal taste rather than an established fact. It is the most natural alternative for players who want mythic enemies and action-RPG pacing without a modern setting.
Recommended Free Tools
You want another path-tracing PC experiment
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle qualifies technically, but its adventure tone makes it the weakest atmosphere match in this group. Choose it for exploration and technical curiosity, not as a substitute for gothic horror.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Calling every ray-traced mode path tracing: use the exact label. Cyberpunk 2077’s Overdrive preset explicitly includes path-traced rendering; other games may expose a mixture of ray-traced effects and a separate path-traced option.
- Assuming path tracing creates the mood: lighting improves an art direction; it cannot supply horror, architecture or combat design that the game does not have.
- Reading a target as a guarantee: Cyberpunk’s 2160p/60 Overdrive figure was measured with DLSS Frame Generation, and Photo Mode VRAM figures are not gameplay benchmarks.
- Expecting console parity: Alan Wake 2’s console Performance and Quality modes do not mean consoles provide the PC’s full path-tracing controls. Xbox Series S specifically has no Performance mode according to Remedy’s FAQ.
- Looking for a missing Indiana Jones setting without DLSS: Bethesda says enabling DLSS reveals the path-tracing options.
- Buying hardware on an old requirement: verify the latest patch notes, drivers, platform availability, GPU stock and current requirements before spending money.
Final recommendation
Buy or play Alan Wake 2 first if your phrase “Bloodborne-like atmosphere” means dread, darkness and horror. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if path tracing itself is the priority and you are comfortable with a futuristic setting plus a demanding PC mode. Pick Black Myth: Wukong for a subjective dark-fantasy/action interpretation, and consider Indiana Jones and the Great Circle only as an additional PC path-tracing option rather than a close tonal match.
