LEGO City Undercover is the closest fit if you want the parts of GTA built around roaming a city, driving, completing missions and finding collectibles, but prefer a comic police story over an adult crime setting. It is not violence-free: the U.S. ESRB rates it E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor. Two more family-oriented LEGO games offer exploration, but their survival or action-adventure play makes them less like GTA.
The right choice depends on what you mean by “like GTA.” If you want cars and a city to explore, LEGO City Undercover is the clear starting point. If you mainly want a large world, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and LEGO Horizon Adventures are alternatives—but neither is a substitute for the city-driving-and-missions mix. Ratings and content details can help families decide whether any of these games suit their own standards.
Which game is most like GTA without its mature crime setting?
For a family-friendly GTA-style adventure, start with LEGO City Undercover. Its combination of an explorable city, vehicles, missions and collectibles is the strongest match among these three choices. Instead of playing a criminal in a realistic crime story, you follow an undercover police officer in a comic LEGO setting. The shift in tone does not mean the game is free of content some families may want to review: its ESRB rating is E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor.

The other two games are better understood as alternatives for players who want LEGO-themed exploration rather than GTA’s particular mix of city driving and missions. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey centers on survival, gathering, crafting and building in themed lands. LEGO Horizon Adventures is an action-adventure built around traversal and combat. Both have an E10+ ESRB rating, but their activities and content descriptors differ.

It helps to separate a few different meanings of “open world.” A player might want to roam without following a strict route, drive vehicles, take on missions, collect items, play beside a family member, or simply explore a colorful setting. LEGO City Undercover matches several of those GTA-adjacent interests at once. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey matches exploration, but its central loop is survival and crafting. LEGO Horizon Adventures offers adventure exploration, but the cited rating description emphasizes traversal and combat rather than free-roaming city driving.
How the three games differ
| Game | What it shares with GTA | Main activity | U.S. ESRB guidance | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LEGO City Undercover | City roaming, driving, missions and collecting | Undercover police story, investigations, arrests, vehicles and collectibles | E10+; Cartoon Violence; Crude Humor | Closest match for city-sandbox play; Nintendo documents two-player play on one system for the Switch edition. |
| LEGO Fortnite Odyssey | Open-world exploration | Survival, gathering food, crafting tools and weapons, and building shelters | E10+; Fantasy Violence; Users Interact and In-Game Purchases descriptors on listed consoles | Not a city-driving or crime-mission substitute; includes online-interaction and purchase considerations. |
| LEGO Horizon Adventures | Adventure exploration | Traversal, character interaction and combat against cultists and robotic dinosaurs | E10+; Fantasy Violence; Language | An action-adventure, not a free-roaming city game centered on driving. |
The ratings and content descriptors above are U.S. ESRB guidance. They are not a claim that every family will find a game suitable. Check the detailed rating summary and consider the specific kinds of play, interaction and humor that matter to your household. Nintendo of America’s parent guidance explains that ESRB categories suggest age suitability, content descriptors flag content of interest or concern, and interactive elements highlight features such as online interaction and digital purchases.
LEGO City Undercover: the closest match for city roaming and driving
What you do
Nintendo of America’s Switch listing describes a free-roaming LEGO City with more than 20 districts, vehicles, hundreds of collectibles and missions involving busting car thieves. That gives players several ways to spend time beyond following the main story: drive around, investigate, complete missions and look for items across the city. It is the most direct fit here for someone who wants a place to roam and a sequence of missions, rather than an open landscape focused on survival or a linear-feeling action adventure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The details matter when comparing it with GTA. The shared appeal is the broad activity pattern—moving around a city, using vehicles, following missions and discovering collectibles—not an equivalent crime story, tone or content level. LEGO City Undercover frames the player’s role as an undercover police officer in a comic setting. Nintendo’s listing specifically points to missions involving car thieves. That is a meaningful change from GTA’s adult crime setting, but the ESRB’s content summary still mentions cartoon weapons, hand-to-hand combat and vehicle collisions, so a lighter presentation is not the same as no action.
More than 20 districts gives the city a range of places to visit, while hundreds of collectibles provide optional goals alongside missions. Those facts support the idea of a substantial roaming-and-collecting experience, but they do not tell a family exactly how long a playthrough takes or how difficult every mission is. The official product details reviewed do not establish a completion time, difficulty level or suitability for a specific young player.
The Switch listing also documents two-player co-op on a single system. That can be useful when a child wants to play alongside someone else in the room. It is local co-op as described for that edition; do not assume that the same feature or setup applies to every platform or edition. If couch co-op is essential, confirm the platform-specific listing before buying rather than relying on a general description of the game.

What parents should check
The ESRB assigns LEGO City: Undercover an E10+ rating, with Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor descriptors. Its rating summary mentions cartoony firearms, hand-to-hand combat, collisions involving fleeing vehicles, slapstick and bathroom humor. The comic presentation may feel quite different from realistic crime games, but families should judge those specific elements against their own preferences rather than relying on the LEGO branding or age category alone.
E10+ is the rating category, while Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor identify content areas for closer attention. The rating summary adds concrete examples: weapons appear in a cartoony context, characters engage in hand-to-hand combat, vehicles collide during pursuits, and the humor includes slapstick and bathroom jokes. A household that is comfortable with playful action but not crude jokes may weigh those details differently from one that is primarily concerned about weapons or vehicle collisions. The summary is a more useful decision aid than the broad label alone.
The Nintendo evidence here is for the Switch edition, whose store listing gives an April 4, 2017 release date. That date identifies the listed edition; it does not establish current stock, a physical-copy option or availability on another platform. Before buying, match the product listing to the device the player will use. A search such as “LEGO City Undercover Nintendo Switch game” may help locate a platform-matched listing, but check that the edition is correct and verify the seller’s current availability and terms. No reliable current price or inventory is established here, so compare current retailer listings directly instead of relying on a promised price or stock status.
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey: open-world exploration with survival systems
Choose LEGO Fortnite Odyssey if the appeal is a world to explore and activities to build toward, not a city with cars and crime-style missions. ESRB describes open-world survival play that involves gathering food, crafting and building shelters. Its activities are therefore a different kind of loop from driving between city missions: players manage resources and create what they need to survive in themed lands.
That distinction can guide the choice. Someone who wants to collect items while cruising around an urban map is better served by LEGO City Undercover. Someone who likes the idea of gathering materials, making tools or weapons and constructing shelter may find LEGO Fortnite Odyssey’s survival focus more appealing. The fact that both games have open-world elements does not make their moment-to-moment play interchangeable.
The U.S. ESRB rating is E10+ for Fantasy Violence. On listed consoles, the game also carries Users Interact and In-Game Purchases descriptors. Those interactive elements matter to a family choosing a game: consider the online interaction and purchase features along with the fantasy combat. The available rating information does not make this a purely local, single-player equivalent to LEGO City Undercover’s documented Switch co-op.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

In particular, an age category does not answer questions about how a family wants to manage online interaction or digital purchases. Nintendo’s parent guidance describes interactive elements as indicators of online features and digital purchases; they are additional considerations rather than a replacement age rating. Families should review the platform’s current settings and the game’s relevant store information if those features affect their decision. The sources cited here do not establish a specific purchase amount, subscription requirement, or account setup, so those details should be checked on the relevant platform rather than assumed.
LEGO Horizon Adventures: exploration with action combat
LEGO Horizon Adventures is the better alternative when a player wants to explore, interact with characters and take part in action sequences, rather than freely drive around a city. ESRB’s summary describes platform traversal and fast-paced melee and ranged combat against LEGO cultists and robotic dinosaurs, including explosions. Its U.S. rating is E10+ for Fantasy Violence and Language; the rating summary notes the word “a*s.”
That makes it an adventure option, but not a close GTA substitute. Its combat and traversal are central to the experience, while city driving and open-ended urban missions are not the features established for this game. It may appeal to someone who wants a colorful setting and action-adventure structure, but families should not infer from the LEGO style that the game lacks combat. The rating’s Fantasy Violence descriptor and summary are the relevant details to consider.

Those particulars give parents a clearer basis for deciding whether its content fits their household than a general statement that it is a family game.
Choose by the kind of freedom you want
- For a city to explore, vehicles and missions: choose LEGO City Undercover. It is the clearest match for GTA’s roaming-and-driving appeal.
- For gathering, crafting and shelter building: consider LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. Its open world is organized around survival, not urban driving.
- For traversal and fantasy action: consider LEGO Horizon Adventures. It offers adventure exploration and combat rather than a city sandbox.
- For play together on one system: LEGO City Undercover’s Nintendo Switch listing specifically documents two-player co-op. The other cited descriptions do not establish a comparable local co-op feature.
These are three evidence-supported options, not a definitive ranking of every game on the market. The most useful comparison is the one that matches the player’s preferred activity: driving and missions, survival crafting, or action-adventure combat.
It is also worth separating “free roam” from “free driving.” A world may offer exploration without the city layout, vehicles or mission style a GTA fan is looking for. Of these options, LEGO City Undercover is the one for which the official Nintendo listing specifically establishes a free-roaming metropolis, vehicles, missions and collectibles. The evidence for LEGO Fortnite Odyssey supports open-world survival, and the evidence for LEGO Horizon Adventures supports traversal and combat. Choose based on the actual activities, not just the open-world label.

How to assess whether a game suits your family
- Start with the actual play style. Ask whether the player wants a city and vehicles, open-world survival, or action-adventure traversal. The phrase “open world” alone does not tell you whether a game has driving, missions, co-op or combat.
- Read the ESRB category and descriptors together. Nintendo’s parent guidance explains that ESRB categories suggest age suitability, content descriptors flag content that may be of interest or concern, and interactive elements call attention to features such as online interaction and digital purchases.
- Check the rating summary for concrete examples. For these games, the summaries add details such as cartoon firearms and bathroom humor, fantasy combat, explosions, or language. Those specifics can be more useful than the broad age category when applying your family’s standards.
- Verify the platform and edition. The cited Nintendo product information describes LEGO City Undercover on Switch. Confirm that a listing is for the intended platform and edition before buying, and do not infer current availability from the release date.
- Consider interaction and purchases separately from age rating. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey’s listed-console descriptors include Users Interact and In-Game Purchases, so review those features as part of the decision, not just its E10+ category.
For a younger child, do not treat an E10+ label as a promise that the game is suitable for every child under or around that age. ESRB categories suggest age appropriateness; they do not replace a parent’s judgment. The concrete summaries can help a family decide whether the specific violence, humor, language or online and purchase features are acceptable. If the requirement is no violence, these three are not confirmed fits: each carries a violence descriptor or a summary describing combat or violent action.

Likewise, wanting a couch co-op game is a separate requirement from wanting an open world. The Switch product listing for LEGO City Undercover documents two-player play on one system. That is the supported local-play detail among these three descriptions. Do not infer the same local setup for LEGO Fortnite Odyssey or LEGO Horizon Adventures from the evidence here; check their platform-specific product listings if shared play is a deciding factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “family-friendly” means in this comparison
There is no single content standard that makes a game family-friendly for every household. Here, the useful distinction is between GTA’s adult crime framing and games with LEGO presentation and E10+ ESRB guidance. That does not mean these titles contain no combat, humor or other content worth checking. The ESRB categories are guidance, while the descriptors and summaries provide more specific information for a family’s decision.
If the requirement is specifically “no violence,” these three options should not be treated as confirmed fits: each has a violence descriptor or a rating summary that describes combat or other violent action. If the priority is simply replacing realistic crime themes with a lighter adventure, LEGO City Undercover is the closest match, subject to its cartoon violence and crude-humor details.
Think of “family-friendly” as a preference to define rather than a universal guarantee. One player may be seeking bright visuals and a comic story in place of realistic crime. Another may need no combat, no crude humor, or no online interaction. The first preference points toward LEGO City Undercover as the closest GTA-style fit; the stricter requirements call for checking each rating summary and feature descriptor before purchase. None of the three can be described as violence-free based on the cited U.S. ESRB guidance.
