The Outer Worlds is the closest structural follow-up to Mass Effect: a single-player, first-person science-fiction RPG built around voiced conversations, competing factions and decisions that shape a compact campaign. Choose Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader if the part you miss most is commanding a ship and managing a large crew. Choose Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for classic BioWare moral choices, Baldur’s Gate 3 for exceptionally reactive companions, and Cyberpunk 2077 for cinematic futuristic storytelling in a big city.
No game reproduces Mass Effect’s exact combination of third-person shooting, deployable squadmates, romance and trilogy-scale continuity. The useful approach is to identify which part mattered most to you—science-fiction setting, crew relationships, consequence-heavy quests, or action combat—and pick accordingly.

What makes a good Mass Effect follow-up?
Mass Effect combines several structures that are rarely found together: real-time third-person combat, a voiced cinematic script, a persistent crew, romance and friendship arcs, and choices that carry across a long story. The recommendations below are therefore alternatives by priority rather than interchangeable copies.
| Game | Setting | Combat and structure | Closest Mass Effect quality | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Outer Worlds | Original science fiction | First-person, single-player action RPG | Compact space adventure with faction choices and voiced dialogue | Shorter and more satirical; no trilogy-scale continuity |
| Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader | Warhammer science fiction | Turn-based, party-based cRPG aboard a voidship | Ship, crew, faction politics and companion roster | Dense tactical rules and a much darker tone |
| Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic | Star Wars space fantasy | Classic party RPG | BioWare-style moral choices and party conversations | 2003 interface, visuals and design conventions |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Fantasy | Turn-based, party-based RPG | Highly individualized companion arcs and reactivity | No science fiction or shooter combat |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | Futuristic dystopian science fiction | First-person, open-world solo RPG | Cinematic dialogue and consequential personal stories | Centered on one protagonist rather than a deployable crew |
| Star Wars: The Old Republic | Star Wars space fantasy | Story-driven MMORPG | Long-form class stories and role-playing choices | Online systems, ongoing access rules and a large time commitment |
The Outer Worlds: the closest first-person space-RPG substitute
Obsidian Entertainment describes The Outer Worlds as a “single-player first-person sci-fi RPG.” You awaken in the middle of a colonist-ship crisis and travel through the Halcyon system while corporations, rebels and other factions compete for power. The character you create determines how the player-driven story unfolds, so your skills, dialogue choices and allegiances affect the route through the campaign.
#1 Best Overall
- The outer worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi rpg from obsidian entertainment and private division
- In the outer worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to halcyon, the furthest colony from earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all-vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable
Why it fits Mass Effect fans
- It is original science fiction rather than an adaptation or fantasy setting.
- Conversations are voiced and built around competing interests, making diplomacy and confrontation meaningful ways to approach a quest.
- You can travel with companions and see how faction decisions alter the problems you face.
- The campaign is relatively compact, making it a good follow-up when you want a focused adventure instead of another hundred-hour open world.
What feels different
The tone is pointed satire, not Mass Effect’s solemn, galaxy-at-war drama. Combat is first-person rather than third-person squad shooting, and the story is designed as one compact adventure rather than a trilogy in which saves and relationships carry forward. Those differences are deliberate, not missing features.
Release and platforms
The Outer Worlds launched on October 25, 2019, published by Private Division. The official listing covers Windows through Steam, Epic and GOG, as well as PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Storefront editions and platform support can change, so check the listing for the device you intend to use before buying.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader: the best ship-and-crew alternative
Rogue Trader puts you in the Koronus Expanse, traveling aboard a giant voidship with a sizeable companion roster. Owlcat Games lists Abelard Werserian, Idira Tlass, Pasqal Haneumann, Cassia Orsellio, Yrliet Lanaevyss, Sister Argenta, Jae Heydari, Heinrix van Calox, Ulfar and Marazhai among the recruitable characters. Their different loyalties and outlooks make the crew itself the center of the campaign.

Choose it when the Normandy was your favorite part
- The voidship supplies a persistent headquarters and a reason for a diverse party to stay together.
- Companion recruitment and faction politics are central rather than incidental.
- Decisions can affect alliances, ideology and the direction of major conflicts.
- A large roster lets you build a party around different personalities and tactical roles.
Combat and learning curve
Rogue Trader is a turn-based cRPG, not a real-time third-person shooter. You manage action points, positioning, abilities and party synergies in deliberate encounters. Character advancement has considerably more rules than Mass Effect’s comparatively streamlined skill trees. Read ability descriptions carefully, keep a consistent plan for each character and expect the first hours to be spent learning the system.
Rank #2
- The Outer Worlds 2 is the eagerly awaited sequel to the award-winning first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment.
- Get ready for an action-packed adventure with a new crew, new weapons, and new enemies in a new colony! So much newness!
- As a daring Earth Directorate, the entire galaxy, rests on your decisions—your strengths, your flaws, your crew, and the factions you choose to trust.
- Build your character with the abilities and choices that reflect your playstyle. The colony reacts to your every move, crafting a narrative that’s yours to own.
- Recruit companions with unique traits, backgrounds, and goals, making them an integral part of the immersive story you create together.
Setting and platform availability
The Warhammer setting is harsher and more openly dystopian than Mass Effect. Official editions are listed for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. If you want a crew drama but do not enjoy tactical, turn-based battles, this is the wrong match despite its excellent ship structure.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: the classic BioWare blueprint
Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is the clearest historical link to BioWare’s pre-Mass Effect design. Its official catalog gives a July 15, 2003 release date and Mac, PC and Xbox platforms. The premise places you in a galactic conflict where “your actions will determine the outcome of a colossal galactic war as well as your destiny as a Jedi.”
Why it remains relevant
- Party members join you for conversations, missions and combat rather than existing only as background characters.
- Moral decisions are easy to understand but can produce very different role-playing identities.
- The story is built around revelations, faction conflict and a personal destiny, all familiar to fans of choice-driven BioWare games.
- Its compact scope makes every companion interaction easier to notice than in a sprawling open world.
Age-related limitations
KOTOR’s 2003 interface, presentation and combat cadence require patience. Tutorials and menus are less explicit than in modern RPGs, and the original console-and-PC design shows its age. Approach it as a historical classic rather than expecting contemporary animation, accessibility options or quality-of-life conveniences.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is fantasy, not science fiction, but it is the best choice when relationships and decisions matter more to you than setting or shooting. Its official companion profiles present characters with sharply defined histories and conflicts: Astarion’s enslavement by Cazador, Gale’s Netherese orb, Lae’zel’s githyanki crisis, Shadowheart’s erased memories, Wyll’s pact and Karlach’s infernal engine.

What Mass Effect fans will recognize
- Companions have personal objectives that can collide with one another and with your values.
- Dialogue, exploration and quest decisions can change who trusts you, who leaves and how an arc resolves.
- The party travels together, so everyday choices can trigger relationship scenes instead of waiting for a separate hub conversation.
- Different character builds and party compositions support multiple solutions to the same problem.
The fundamental change
Combat is turn-based and party-based, with positioning, environmental interactions and action economy replacing Mass Effect’s cover-shooter rhythm. The setting uses fantasy magic, gods and monsters rather than starships and alien diplomacy. Select it for companion reactivity, not for a science-fiction atmosphere.
Cyberpunk 2077: a cinematic futuristic solo alternative
Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City, a dangerous megalopolis that contains the main Cyberpunk 2077 storyline and the Phantom Liberty spy-thriller expansion. CD PROJEKT RED presents it as a story-rich open-world RPG centered on V, your single protagonist. The game delivers voiced scenes, major personal dilemmas and a dense futuristic setting, but it is not structured like a Normandy campaign in which you repeatedly deploy a squad.
Best reasons to choose it
- You want cinematic conversations and a strongly voiced protagonist.
- You prefer exploring one detailed future city to traveling between many planets.
- You enjoy personal stakes, faction conflicts and decisions that can redirect quest lines.
- You want real-time first-person combat with extensive character-build options.
What you give up
V remains the narrative center, so companions do not form a permanent command crew in the Mass Effect sense. The open-world structure also allows long stretches of exploration between major story scenes. It is a strong choice for atmosphere and individual character stories, not a direct substitute for squad management.
Current platform listing
The official site lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac. Expansion and platform availability are edition-specific; verify the store page for your system, especially if you want Phantom Liberty.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: long-form online class stories
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a story-driven MMORPG. EA describes a free-to-play option in which you choose a class, alignment and narrative path, while BioWare’s catalog lists its December 20, 2011 release and PC platform. Each class follows its own saga, making it the option here with the most cumulative story content.
When it is a good fit
- You want to keep playing a character for months rather than finish one self-contained campaign.
- You enjoy Star Wars role-playing and are comfortable with online worlds.
- You want class-specific plots and the ability to make alignment choices over a long arc.
- You do not mind other players, live-service updates and account-based progression.
Important trade-offs
An MMORPG has different pacing from a single-player BioWare game. Quests, group content, interface systems and access rules can interrupt the cinematic flow, and free-to-play restrictions or optional subscriptions may affect how you experience later content. Pick it for ongoing online story arcs, not for a private, tightly paced campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the Mass Effect feature you miss most
If you want original science fiction first
Start with The Outer Worlds. It preserves the science-fiction setting, voiced conversations and faction choices while keeping the campaign manageable. Move to Cyberpunk 2077 if a large urban sandbox appeals more than a starship journey.
If you want a ship and a crew
Choose Rogue Trader. Its giant voidship and extensive companion roster are the closest structural match, but only if you are willing to learn turn-based tactical rules and accept Warhammer’s darker worldview.
Best Value
- The outer worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi rpg from obsidian entertainment and private division
- In the outer worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to halcyon, the furthest colony from earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable
If you want classic BioWare choices
Play KOTOR. It is the direct historical recommendation for party conversations, moral decisions and a personal role in a galactic war. Allow for its age before deciding whether its design still works for you.
If relationships matter more than genre
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3. Its companion arcs are unusually individualized and reactive, even though the game replaces space opera with fantasy and shooting with turn-based party combat.
If you want modern cinematic presentation
Choose Cyberpunk 2077. It offers a heavily voiced, futuristic story with a large explorable city, but the campaign is centered on V rather than a permanent squad.
If you want years of additional stories
Choose The Old Republic. Its class-based MMORPG structure supplies a much larger time horizon, with the online commitments that implies.
A practical order for a Mass Effect fan’s first three games
- Begin with The Outer Worlds if you want the least disruptive transition: science fiction, single-player dialogue and consequential faction decisions in a compact campaign.
- Follow with Rogue Trader if you discover that your favorite part was the crew and ship. Its slower, tactical combat will show whether you value party management more than real-time action.
- Use KOTOR or Baldur’s Gate 3 next depending on your tolerance for older presentation. KOTOR gives you BioWare’s original choice blueprint; Baldur’s Gate 3 gives you modern companion reactivity in a fantasy world.
Swap in Cyberpunk 2077 at any point if you would rather have a modern first-person action RPG, and choose The Old Republic instead when an ongoing online saga is more appealing than a finished campaign.
Common mismatches to avoid
- Expecting a perfect clone: Mass Effect’s exact blend of shooter, squad banter, romance and multi-game continuity is unusual. Decide which element is non-negotiable before choosing.
- Ignoring combat format: Rogue Trader, KOTOR and Baldur’s Gate 3 are party RPGs with turn-based or classic systems. They will not feel like Mass Effect’s real-time shooting.
- Assuming every companion is a crew member: Cyberpunk 2077’s characters support V’s story but do not form a deployable Normandy-style squad.
- Overlooking tone: The Outer Worlds is satirical, Rogue Trader is grim, KOTOR is space fantasy, Baldur’s Gate 3 is high fantasy, and Cyberpunk 2077 is dystopian. Setting and mood can matter as much as mechanics.
- Buying without checking the edition: Platform lists and expansion availability change. Confirm the current storefront listing for your hardware, especially for older releases and versions that include Phantom Liberty or other add-on content.
- Choosing an MMO for a short weekend: The Old Republic is designed around continuing online play and class-specific story arcs. A self-contained game such as The Outer Worlds or KOTOR is a better fit for a single, focused campaign.
Final recommendation
For most Mass Effect fans, start with The Outer Worlds. It preserves the science-fiction setting, voiced dialogue, faction conflict and player-directed story without demanding a massive time commitment. Choose Rogue Trader when the ship and crew are the priority, KOTOR for BioWare’s classic moral-choice formula, Baldur’s Gate 3 for the deepest companion reactivity, Cyberpunk 2077 for cinematic futuristic solo play, and The Old Republic for an ongoing online Star Wars saga.
