Start with Sonic Adventure 2. It is the direct follow-up and keeps the original game’s most distinctive ideas: multiple playable characters, interwoven stories, varied stage types and Chao raising. Choose Sonic Frontiers if you want a modern Sonic game built around open-zone exploration, or Freedom Planet 2 if you want a non-Sonic platformer with fast movement, several playable characters, hub areas and a campaign.
Quick picks
| Game | Best for | What carries over from Sonic Adventure | Main change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonic Adventure 2 | The closest follow-up | Multi-character storytelling, distinct gameplay types and Chao raising | Its campaign is organized around Hero and Dark storylines with action, treasure-hunting and lock-on shooting stages |
| Sonic Frontiers | Modern exploration and platforming | 3D Sonic movement, platforming challenges and varied activities | Open-zone maps replace the Adventure Fields and Action Stage hub structure |
| Freedom Planet 2 | A non-Sonic alternative | Fast movement, multiple characters, hubs and a narrative campaign | It is a separate platformer rather than an official Sonic continuation |
The right choice depends on which part of Sonic Adventure you want to preserve. Its appeal comes from the combination of Adventure Fields, dedicated Action Stages, six characters with different abilities and stories, and the Chao Garden. No single later game reproduces every one of those elements in the same format.

Why Sonic Adventure feels unusual
Adventure Fields connect the stages
Sonic Adventure does not send you from one isolated level to the next. Its Adventure Fields act as explorable areas that connect characters, story events and Action Stages. That structure gives the game a sense of place: you move through a shared world before entering a focused level built around a particular character’s abilities.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When choosing a follow-up, decide whether the connecting world matters as much as the stages themselves. Sonic Adventure 2 changes that arrangement substantially, while Sonic Frontiers expands the idea of an explorable space into a much larger open-zone format.
#1 Best Overall
- 12 playable characters each with different story lines.
- A wide array of game modes including various styles of gameplay.
- Supports two player split screen so that you can share the fun with a friend.
Six characters create different campaigns
Each of Sonic Adventure’s six playable characters has distinct abilities and a separate story perspective, so finishing one campaign does not exhaust the game’s design. A good successor therefore needs more than fast running. It should offer meaningful changes in how movement, objectives or level layout work.
The Chao Garden adds a long-term activity
The Chao Garden is another reason a conventional stage-by-stage platformer may feel like a poor substitute. It gives Sonic Adventure an ongoing raising and collecting activity alongside its main stories. Sonic Adventure 2 is the recommendation to prioritize if you want that feature to remain part of your next game.
1. Sonic Adventure 2: the closest follow-up
SEGA’s description of Sonic Adventure 2 identifies six playable characters, interwoven Hero and Dark storylines, three broad gameplay types and a continuing Chao-raising feature. Those shared ingredients make it the clearest next step after the original.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat makes the transition familiar
- Multiple viewpoints: The Hero and Dark campaigns let you experience the conflict from opposing sides rather than following one uninterrupted route.
- Different character roles: The six-character roster supports more than one style of play, preserving the variety that defines Sonic Adventure.
- Three gameplay types: High-speed 3D action, treasure hunting and lock-on shooting break up the rhythm of the campaign.
- Chao raising: The Chao feature provides an activity to return to between story stages, much as the original’s Chao Garden does.
How its stage variety affects your expectations
Sonic Adventure 2 is not simply a longer set of Sonic speed stages. Its action levels emphasize high-speed 3D movement, treasure-hunting levels ask you to search for objectives, and shooting-focused levels use lock-on targeting. The result is a more deliberately segmented experience: you switch control priorities when the campaign changes character or gameplay type.
If you loved discovering how each Sonic Adventure character handled a stage, this variety is a strength. If you only want uninterrupted high-speed running, the treasure-hunting and shooting sections may feel like a detour. The game is best approached as a character-driven action adventure, not as a pure speed-run sequel.
Who should choose it
- Choose it first if you want a direct continuation of Sonic Adventure’s multi-character storytelling.
- Choose it if Chao raising is a major reason you kept returning to the original.
- Choose it if you welcome several gameplay types instead of one uniform control scheme.
- Choose it if you want another Sonic game with a campaign built around contrasting sides of a story.
Platforms and compatibility
The SEGA Sonic Channel platform listing names Dreamcast, GameCube, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Steam for Sonic Adventure 2. A platform appearing on that historical listing does not guarantee a current store listing, regional availability, backward compatibility or a particular physical edition. Check the storefront for your country and the exact hardware you plan to use before buying.
2. Sonic Frontiers: choose modern open-zone exploration
SEGA’s November 8, 2022 release announcement describes Sonic Frontiers as an open-zone Sonic game with challenges, battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space stages. That makes it a strong choice when you want broad exploration and platforming, but it is not a structural remake of Sonic Adventure.
Rank #2
How the world structure changes
Sonic Adventure separates its connected Adventure Fields from its focused Action Stages. Frontiers combines exploration and activities within open-zone maps. You can move through a larger area, encounter challenges and battles, solve puzzles, pursue side quests and then enter Cyber Space stages.
This design changes the pacing. Instead of returning to a compact hub to select the next stage, you spend more time navigating a zone and deciding which activity to tackle. The open-zone format is therefore a better fit for players who want freedom to explore than for players seeking the exact hub-and-stage rhythm of the original.
Platforming controls for different preferences
Frontiers offers two control styles. One favors precise platforming, while the other emphasizes traditional high-speed controls. Select the style that matches what you liked about Sonic Adventure: precision is useful when you care about landing and navigating platform sequences, while the high-speed option is designed for a more familiar Sonic rush.
The choice is not a difficulty promise; it is a control preference. You may still encounter battles, puzzles and side objectives regardless of the style you select.

- Explore the open zone. Move through the map rather than following a single linear stage route.
- Take on challenges. Use platforming and movement skills to complete activities placed around the zone.
- Fight battles. Combat is one of the activities SEGA lists alongside exploration and puzzles.
- Solve puzzles. These provide objectives that are not based solely on speed.
- Complete side quests. Optional tasks add reasons to investigate areas beyond the main path.
- Enter Cyber Space. These stages provide a more focused level format within the open-zone structure.
Who should choose it
- Choose Frontiers if you want the newest structure among these recommendations.
- Choose it if exploring a broad map matters more than revisiting a compact Adventure Field.
- Choose it if you want platforming alongside battles, puzzles and side quests.
- Choose it if you prefer to select between precise-platforming and high-speed control styles.
Platforms
SEGA’s release announcement lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC Steam. The PlayStation product page separately lists the PS4 and PS5 versions. Confirm the edition, region and hardware requirements on the store you intend to use, because a listed platform does not by itself confirm current stock or compatibility with every setup.
3. Freedom Planet 2: a non-Sonic alternative with familiar ingredients
If you are finished with Sonic Adventure but still want fast platforming, multiple characters and a story campaign, consider Freedom Planet 2. PC Gamer includes it in its best platformers on PC guide and describes fast movement, several playable characters, hub areas and a narrative campaign.
Why it fits the request
- Fast movement: The game targets the momentum and responsiveness many players seek after a Sonic title.
- Several playable characters: Switching characters can provide the variety that makes a multi-campaign game appealing.
- Hub areas: Hubs give the campaign connective spaces instead of presenting every level as an isolated selection.
- Narrative campaign: The story provides a reason to progress beyond chasing individual platforming challenges.
What it does not replace
Freedom Planet 2 is an editorial alternative, not a Sonic game or an official continuation of Sonic Adventure. The cited guide establishes the features above, but it does not establish the same Chao-raising system, Adventure Fields, Sonic characters or Sonic-specific stage design. Choose it for the combination of speed, characters, hubs and story—not because it reproduces the original game one-for-one.

Who should choose it
Pick Freedom Planet 2 when you want a different universe and a platformer that still supports character variety and a connected campaign. It is especially suitable if you have already played the available Sonic follow-ups or want to avoid another Sonic-branded game while keeping a similar high-level appeal.

Choose by the part of Sonic Adventure you miss
You miss the characters and story perspectives
Play Sonic Adventure 2. Its Hero and Dark storylines are the only recommendation here explicitly built around opposing campaign perspectives, and its six-character roster most directly continues the original’s multi-character approach.
You miss taking care of Chao
Play Sonic Adventure 2. It is the only listed follow-up whose cited description includes continuing Chao raising.
You miss exploring between stages
Decide whether you want a familiar-scale or expanded version of that idea. Sonic Adventure 2 is closer in lineage, while Frontiers offers open-zone exploration with activities distributed across a larger map. Freedom Planet 2 offers hub areas in a separate platforming series.
You want more than speed stages
Sonic Adventure 2 and Frontiers both provide deliberate activity changes. Adventure 2 shifts among action, treasure hunting and shooting. Frontiers combines exploration with battles, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space stages. Choose Adventure 2 for a sequel-shaped campaign or Frontiers for an open-zone checklist of activities.

You want a non-Sonic game
Choose Freedom Planet 2. It keeps the broad ingredients of fast platforming, multiple characters, hubs and a narrative campaign without presenting itself as part of Sonic continuity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical play order
- Start with Sonic Adventure 2. This gives you the most direct continuation of the original’s character-driven design and Chao feature.
- Move to Sonic Frontiers. Use it when you want to see how Sonic platforming works in an open-zone format with modern activities and two control styles.
- Try Freedom Planet 2. Use it as a change of universe while retaining fast movement, character choice, hubs and a campaign.
You do not need to play them in this order if your priority is different. A player focused on exploration should begin with Frontiers; a player looking for a non-Sonic platformer should begin with Freedom Planet 2.
Platform and purchase checks
Platform information is unusually important for these recommendations because the games span older and newer systems.
- Verify the exact store listing. A historical platform list does not guarantee that a version is still sold in your region.
- Check compatibility. Confirm whether your console or PC supports the listed edition and whether any required storefront account or launcher applies.
- Distinguish editions. A digital listing, a physical release and a backward-compatible version may have different availability.
- Confirm region. Product pages and catalogs can differ by country, particularly for older console releases.
- Read the current system requirements. The cited platform lists identify where a game was released, not the hardware specifications for every PC configuration.
Common mistakes when choosing a follow-up
Expecting Frontiers to reproduce Adventure Fields
Frontiers is built around open zones, not the compact Adventure Field and Action Stage arrangement. Choose it for exploration and platforming variety, not for a one-to-one structural continuation.

The continuing Chao feature is specifically identified for Sonic Adventure 2. Do not assume that a newer Sonic game includes the same activity unless its current product information says so.
Treating a multi-character game as a single-style platformer
Sonic Adventure 2’s gameplay types are intentionally different. Treasure hunting and lock-on shooting require a different approach from high-speed 3D action, so the game is a better fit for players who enjoy variety than for players who want one control style throughout.
Buying from an outdated platform assumption
Dreamcast, GameCube, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 listings for Sonic Adventure 2 describe its release history, not guaranteed availability today. Check your regional store and hardware before committing to a purchase.
Final recommendation
For the closest experience after Sonic Adventure, choose Sonic Adventure 2. It continues the multi-character storytelling approach, offers three distinct gameplay types and retains Chao raising. Choose Sonic Frontiers when your priority is a modern open-zone Sonic game with exploration, platforming, combat, puzzles, side quests and Cyber Space stages. Choose Freedom Planet 2 when you want to leave Sonic behind but keep fast movement, several characters, hub areas and a narrative platforming campaign.
